High-resolution neutron powder diffraction is used to probe for minute structural changes. Chapter 3 is …

The Complete Plus-Minus: A Case Study Of The Columbus Blue Jackets, Nathan Spagnola Jan 2013

The Complete Plus-Minus: A Case Study Of The Columbus Blue Jackets, Nathan Spagnola

Theses and Dissertations

A new hockey statistic termed the Complete Plus-Minus (CPM) was created to calculate the abilities of hockey players in the National Hockey League (NHL). This new statistic was used to analyze the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 2011-2012 season. The CPM for the Blue Jackets was created using two logistic regressions that modeled a goal being scored for and against the Blue Jackets. Whether a goal was scored for or against the team were the responses, while events on the ice were the predictors in the model. It was found that the team's poor performance was due to a weak …

Response Of Materials To Various Shock Loading Conditions Generated By Plate Impact Experiments, Gifford W. Plume Iv Jan 2013

Response Of Materials To Various Shock Loading Conditions Generated By Plate Impact Experiments, Gifford W. Plume Iv

Open Access Dissertations

The response of materials to shock loading has been investigated through use of a plate impact experimental technique. A single stage gas gun was utilized to drive projectiles to velocities between 50-500 m/s, facilitating investigations into low to moderate shock loading conditions. Temporal records of the dynamic events were captured with the use of commercial manganin stress gauges that were embedded within layers of test material.

Within this thesis, there is a bimodal theme. The first portion of this thesis investigated the spall fracture of cast irons with varying microstructure. Although the study of the spall fracture of materials is …

The Effectiveness Of Educational Support To Orphans And Vulnerable Children In Tanzania And Uganda, Mary Shann, Malcolm Bryant, Mohamad Brooks, Paul Bukuluki, Denis Muhangi, Joe Lugalla, Gideon Kwesigabo

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

Little evidence is available to assist policy makers and donors in deciding what kinds of programs in developing countries are more likely to be effective in supporting the entry and continuation of OVC in secondary schools. This is particularly important for females whose education has direct bearing on child mortality in the next generation. This study gathered four kinds of educational outcome measures in two East African countries ravaged by the AIDS/HIV pandemic. The goal was to determine whether direct scholarship aid to individual students versus various forms of block grants would be more effective in promoting lower rates of …

Putting Theatre Arts To The Test: Student Performance That Goes Beyond Stem And Steam, Lisa Nanni-Messegee, Teresa B. Murphy

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” initiative emphasizes training in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). More recently, arts have been added to STEM, resulting in the acronym STEAM: Science and Technology interpreted through Engineering and the Arts, based in the Mathematical elements. However, should the arts be used only to cultivate better scientists? Or might the arts be valued apart from of their service to math and science?

Synthesis, Characterization, And Antimicrobial Activity Of Some New Phosphorus Macrocyclic Compounds Containing Pyrazole Rings, Tarik El-Sayed Ali, Salah Abdel-Aziz Abdel-Ghaffar, Kamilia Mohamed El-Mahdy, Somaia Mohamed Abdel-Karim

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A simple synthetic method is reported for the preparation of some new phosphorus macrocycles in which the pyrazole rings are appended to a phosphorus atom. The methodology is based on the cyclocondensation reaction of bis(4-formylpyrazolyl) phosphine oxide(1a, 1b) with nitrogen nucleophiles that contain active terminal amino groups. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds were assayed.

Excerpt: "King’s introduction provides the answer to the most compelling and perhaps perplexing question that comes to mind when one picks up a book of articles published from 1970 through 2010. Why? After all, in the day of search engines and electronic data banks, it does not require much of a hunt to unearth older and out-of-print articles. Furthermore, in the academy we often overlook anything with a publication date beyond ten years ago simply because it becomes “historical” and newer scholars have offered alternate perspectives while building upon the contributions of our more distant colleagues, as they should. However, …

Properties Of Generalized Derangement Graphs, Hannah Jackson, Kathryn Nyman, Les Reid Jan 2013

Properties Of Generalized Derangement Graphs, Hannah Jackson, Kathryn Nyman, Les Reid

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

A permutation on n elements is called a k-derangement (k≤n) if no k-element subset is mapped to itself. One can form the k-derangement graph on the set of all permutations on n elements by connecting two permutations σ and τ if στ-1 is a k-derangement. We characterize when such a graph is connected or Eulerian. For n an odd prime power, we determine the independence, clique and chromatic numbers of the 2-derangement graph.

Applying Dc Resistivity Imaging To Investigating The Relationship Between Water Quality And Transpiration Beneath Circular Islands In The Okavango Delta, Botswana: A Case Study Of Thata Island, E. M. Shemang, L. N. Molwalefhe, Kevin L. Mickus Jan 2013

Mickus

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

An electrical resistivity survey was carried out on Thata Island, one of the numerous circular islands in the Okavango Delta, to investigate the mechanism governing interactions between surface water, vegetation and groundwater. Seven data profiles were collected across the island and modelling results indicated that the centre of the island had low resistivity values (less than 10 ohm-m), while resistivity values increased laterally outside the island. Such lateral resistivity zoning responded to variation in shallow groundwater chemistry below the islands having a high concentration of solutes inside and the presence of fresh water outside the islands. Borehole to surface resistivity …

Long-Range, Passive Wireless Monitoring Using Energy-Efficient, Electrically-Small Sensor Nodes And Harmonic Radar Interrogator, Ibrahim Nassar Jan 2013

Long-Range, Passive Wireless Monitoring Using Energy-Efficient, Electrically-Small Sensor Nodes And Harmonic Radar Interrogator, Ibrahim Nassar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the use of the harmonic radar technique for passive wireless sensing applications. Issues of DC power consumption, high RF activation power, large node size, and short communication range associated with the existing passive wireless sensing technologies are addressed by the development of novel, completely passive, high efficiency, compact 3-D harmonic sensor nodes. The node transceiver employs a passive frequency doubler to return the second harmonic of the interrogation signal, and electrically-small 3-D antennas to achieve the compactness and high efficiency. The developed nodes fit inside a sphere with a diameter < 3 cm and achieve communication range > 60 m using a 43 dBm EIRP …

Reconfigurable Low Profile Antennas Using Tunable High Impedance Surfaces, David Cure

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation shows a detailed investigation on reconfigurable low profile antennas using tunable high impedance surfaces (HIS). The specific class of HIS used in this dissertation is called a frequency selective surface (FSS). This type of periodic structure is fabricated to create artificial magnetic conductors (AMCs) that exhibit properties similar to perfect magnetic conductors (PMCs). The antennas are intended for radiometric sensing applications in the biomedical field. For the particular sensing application of interest in this dissertation, the performance of the antenna sub-system is the most critical aspect of the radiometer design where characteristics such as small size, light weight, …

Charter Schools, Vouchers, And The Public Good, Derek W. Black Jan 2013

Charter Schools, Vouchers, And The Public Good, Derek W. Black

Faculty Publications

Charter schools and vouchers have thus far been promoted or vilified based on their potential to improve academic achievement for those students enrolled in them. This debate, however, ignores a more important question: whether these educational policies serve the public good. Education as a public good cannot be reduced solely to questions of academic achievement, much less the academic achievement of a subset of students. Theoretically, charter schools and vouchers can serve the public good, but in practice, they have not. This shortcoming, however, is not necessarily due to an inherent flaw in charters or vouchers, but the failure of …

Optimization Of The Optical And Electrochemical Properties Of Donor-Acceptor Copolymers Through Functional Group And Side Chain Modification, Mark J. Seger Jan 2013

Optimization Of The Optical And Electrochemical Properties Of Donor-Acceptor Copolymers Through Functional Group And Side Chain Modification, Mark J. Seger

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Donor-acceptor copolymers have received a great deal of attention for application as organic semiconductors, in particular as the active layers in low-cost consumer electronics. The functional groups grafted to the polymer backbones generally dictate the molecular orbital energies of the final materials as well as aid in self-assembly. Additionally, the side chains attached to these functional groups not only dictate the solubility of the final materials, but also their morphological characteristics. The bulk of the research presented in this dissertation focuses on the synthesis and structure-property relationships of polymers containing novel acceptor motifs. Chapter 2 focuses on the synthesis of …

Differences Between Concrete And Virtual Manipulatives In Preparing Tenth Grade Math Students For Standardized Tests, John G. Pappas Jan 2013

Differences Between Concrete And Virtual Manipulatives In Preparing Tenth Grade Math Students For Standardized Tests, John G. Pappas

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Research has suggested that the use of manipulatives may enhance students’ grasp of mathematical concepts. Manipulatives may be concrete (physical) objects or virtual computer-based images of objects similar to their three-dimensional counterparts. Studies with elementary and middle-school students generally have found virtual manipulatives to outperform concrete manipulatives in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics. However, very little research on manipulative use has been conducted with secondary school students. Furthermore, few studies have investigated instruction using virtual or concrete manipulatives across more than one content area.

This study assessed the impact of virtual and concrete manipulatives in a group of 164 …

Advances in data analytics for big data have affected many different domains and are providing new insights from these data for their respective communities. One such community is conservation science. A part of section of this community, ornithologists and bird conservationists has at its disposal millions of volunteers willing to contribute to a new ‘big’ data set. This can be achieved by means of new technology and the use of citizen science. This is already underway in North America through the excellent work of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (CLO). This institute has harnessed the technology and the people and …

The Diffusion Of Regulatory Oversight, Jonathan B. Wiener Jan 2013

The Diffusion Of Regulatory Oversight, Jonathan B. Wiener

Faculty Scholarship

The idea of cost-benefit analysis has been spreading internationally for centuries — at least since an American named Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter in 1772 to his British friend, Joseph Priestley, recommending that Priestley weigh the pros and cons of a difficult decision in what Franklin dubbed a “moral or prudential algebra” (Franklin 1772) (more on this letter below). Several recent studies show that the use of benefit-cost analysis (BCA), for both public projects and public regulation of private activities, is now unfolding in countries on every habitable continent around the world (Livermore and Revesz 2013; Quah and Toh 2012; …

Toward A New Age Of Consumer Access Rights: Creating Space In The Public Accommodation For The Lgbt Community, Justin Muehlmeyer Jan 2013

Toward A New Age Of Consumer Access Rights: Creating Space In The Public Accommodation For The Lgbt Community, Justin Muehlmeyer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article advocates for an expanded interpretation of public accommodation laws to include LGBT individuals, arguing that current legal frameworks often fail to address their unique experiences of discrimination. It emphasizes the need to modernize the definition of public accommodations to encompass contemporary spaces where cultural interactions occur, such as schools and photography services, while proposing limited exemptions to accommodate religious beliefs. The analysis underscores the ongoing tension between anti-discrimination laws and First Amendment rights, highlighting the human impact of these legal battles through compelling cases and statistics.

Synthetic Efforts Toward The Eastern Hemisphere Of Theonellamide C, Douglas D. Wong Jan 2013

Synthetic Efforts Toward The Eastern Hemisphere Of Theonellamide C, Douglas D. Wong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The theonellamides (TNMs) A-F are bicyclic dodecapeptides isolated from marine sponges of the genus Theonella and were shown to display potent antifungal activity. Despite considerable synthetic effort to produce TNM F by the Shioiri group in the early 1990s, a total synthesis of a TNM has yet to be reported. This dissertation describes our efforts toward some of the required amino acid residues of TNM C and the eastern hemisphere. The production of erythro-β-hydroxyasparagine (eHyAsn) followed the synthesis of threo-β-HyAsn by Boger and co-workers, utilizing a key Sharpless aminohydroxylation reaction. The eHyAsn building block, Boc-eHyAsn(OTBS)-OH, was coupled with HCl.Phe.OMe using …
