Variable Appropriation Of An Online Resource Discovery And Sharing Tool, Victor R. Lee, Mimi Recker, Tamara Sumner

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Even when following best practices for participatory design, the appropriation of tools in formal education settings can be hampered by a number of factors. Drawing from a case of a web tool built to help teachers in five school districts find and share free resources in an educational digital library, we describe patterns of tool use and provide some explanations for variability in tool appropriation. We also suggest that future research consider school districts as complex systems of professionals whose interactions and inter-relationships may yield unexpected technology adoption behaviors.

Picking Up The Mantle Of “Expert”: Assigned Roles, Assertion Of Identity, And Peer Recognition Within A Programming Class, Deborah A. Fields, N. Enyedy

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Changing an established role in a classroom is difficult. It involves constructing a new set of relations within a community. In this article we investigate how students with newly developed interest and experience in programming developed outside the classroom pick up and establish their roles as experts in programming within the classroom community. More specifically, we focus on how two 11-year-old software designers shifted their established roles in their classroom to gain status as expert programmers. We use an identity lens to understand how peer expertise was established in the context of a classroom community, adopting a multifaceted perspective of …

Flourine-18 fluoro-2-deoxy-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT) is a useful test for the management of malignant conditions. Inflammatory and infectious processes, however, can cause increased uptake on PET scanning, often causing diagnostic dilemmas. This knowledge is important to the rheumatologist not only because of the inflammatory conditions we treat but also because certain rheumatic diseases impose an increased risk of malignancy either due to the disease itself or as a consequence of medications used to treat the rheumatic diseases. There is an increasing body of evidence investigating the role of PET scans in inflammatory …

Horizon Content Knowledge In The Work Of Teaching: A Focus On Planning, Nick Wasserman, Julianna Connelly Stockton Jan 2013

Horizon Content Knowledge In The Work Of Teaching: A Focus On Planning, Nick Wasserman, Julianna Connelly Stockton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Horizon content knowledge, one component of Ball et al.’s mathematical knowledge for teaching framework (e.g., Ball, Thames, & Phelps, 2008), has yet to reach adequate clarity and consensus in the field. Recently, various scholars have worked to further conceptualize and describe the mathematical horizon (e.g., Jakobsen, Thames & Ribeiro, 2013; Figueiras et al., 2011; Zazkis & Mamolo, 2011). In this communication, we identify some limitations in the ways such knowledge has thus far been described and offer an additional form of potential impact of horizon content knowledge on the work of teaching.

The Evolving Role Of Department Chair: Leading Faculty Through Times Of Change, Domenick Pinto

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

How does one manage conflict and change in a very volatile economic climate where academia is experiencing greater accountability, increased emphasis on outcome assessment, declining enrollment and great uncertainty for the future? The role of department chair has, in many cases, become one entrenched in conflict between the role of faculty and administrator and has experienced a tremendous evolution over the last 25 years.

The role of department chair has changed as economic, social and student climates have changed. This paper will summarize collected data from chairs of departments of various sizes and types in order to discuss and understand …

Osler, Langdell, And The Atelier: Three Tales Of Creation In Professional Education, Richard K. Neumann Jr. Jan 2013

Osler, Langdell, And The Atelier: Three Tales Of Creation In Professional Education, Richard K. Neumann Jr.

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article traces the origins of the casebook classroom, the medical school teaching hospital, and the architectural school design studio. These parallel histories show how and why legal education diverged from norms being established in the other two fields. The divergence left legal education stronger within universities than it otherwise might have been. But it also left legal education insulated from its own profession and, to that extent, diminished intellectually.

Uniquely among the professions, law schools use a required curriculum has changed little since 1870. Medical and architecture schools are built around settings where those professions are practiced: teaching hospitals …

Using Gis To Delineate Headwater Stream Origins In The Appalachian Coal-Belt Region Of Kentucky, Jonathan A. Villines Jan 2013

Using Gis To Delineate Headwater Stream Origins In The Appalachian Coal-Belt Region Of Kentucky, Jonathan A. Villines

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Human activity such as surface mining can have substantial impacts on the natural environment. Performing a Cumulative Hydrologic Impact Assessment (CHIA) of such impacts on surface water systems requires knowing the location and extent of these impacted streams. The Jurisdictional Determination (JD) of a stream’s protected status under the Clean Water Act (CWA) involves locating and classifying streams according to their flow regime: ephemeral, intermittent, or perennial. Due to their often remote locations and small size, taking a field inventory of headwater streams for surface mining permit applications or permit reviews is challenging. A means of estimating headwater stream location …

Comparison Of Earthquake Source Models For The 2011 Tohoku Event Using Tsunami Simulations And Near‐Field Observations, Breanyn T. Macinnes, Aditya Riadi Gusman, Randall J. Leveque, Yuichiro Tanioka Jan 2013

Comparison Of Earthquake Source Models For The 2011 Tohoku Event Using Tsunami Simulations And Near‐Field Observations, Breanyn T. Macinnes, Aditya Riadi Gusman, Randall J. Leveque, Yuichiro Tanioka

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Selection of the earthquake source used in tsunami models of the 2011 Tohoku event affects the simulated tsunami waveform across the near field. Different earthquake sources, based on inversions of seismic waveforms, tsunami waveforms, and Global Positioning System (GPS) data, give distinguishable patterns of simulated tsunami heights in many locations in Tohoku and at near‐field Deep‐ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) buoys. We compared 10 sources proposed by different research groups using the GeoClaw code to simulate the resulting tsunami. Several simulations accurately reproduced observations at simulation sites with high grid resolution. Many earthquake sources produced results within 20% …

Pliocene Sinistral Slip Across The Adobe Hills, Eastern California-Western Nevada: Kinematics Of Fault Slip Transfer Across The Mina Deflection, Sarah Nagorsen-Rinke, Jeffrey Lee, Andrew Calvert

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The Adobe Hills region (California and Nevada, USA) is a faulted volcanic field located within the western Mina deflection, a right-stepping zone of faults that connects the northern Eastern California shear zone (ECSZ) to the south with the Walker Lane belt (WLB) to the north. New detailed geologic mapping, structural studies, and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology in the Adobe Hills allow us to calculate fault slip rates and test predictions for the kinematics of fault slip transfer into the Mina deflection. The Adobe Hills are dominated by Pliocene tuffaceous sandstone, basaltic lavas that yield 40Ar/39Ar ages …

The Ishraq Program For Out-Of-School Girls: From Pilot To Scale-Up, Mona Selim, Nahla G. Abdel-Tawab, Khaled El Sayed, Asmaa Elbadawy, Heba El Kalaawy

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In response to the needs of adolescent girls in Egypt for improved schooling, health, and livelihood prospects, Ishraq (sunrise)—a multidimensional program for 12–15-year-old out-of-school girls—was launched in 2001 by the Population Council in collaboration with CEDPA, Save the Children, Caritas, and local nongovernmental organizations. The program combined traditional tested program elements (literacy, life skills, nutrition) with more innovative ones (sports, financial education). It focused on building a multilayered platform to support and institutionalize the program by educating and mobilizing communities around issues of importance to adolescent girls; forging partnerships between international NGOs, government institutions, and local NGOs; and building capacities …

Smooth Local Subspace Projection For Nonlinear Noise Reduction, David Chelidze Jan 2013

Smooth Local Subspace Projection For Nonlinear Noise Reduction, David Chelidze

Mechanical, Industrial & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Many nonlinear or chaotic time series exhibit an innate broad spectrum, which makes noise reduction difficult. Local projective noise reduction is one of the most effective tools. It is based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and works for both map-like and continuously sampled time series. However, POD only looks at geometrical or topological properties of data and does not take into account the temporal characteristics of time series. Here, we present a new smooth projective noise reduction method. It uses smooth orthogonal decomposition (SOD) of bundles of reconstructed short-time trajectory strands to identify smooth local subspaces. Restricting trajectories to these …

Dynamics Of Nonhomogeneous Carbon Steel Plates, J. H. Kim, L. Zhang, R. Hebert, J. T. Wright, A. Shukla Jan 2013

Dynamics Of Nonhomogeneous Carbon Steel Plates, J. H. Kim, L. Zhang, R. Hebert, J. T. Wright, A. Shukla

Mechanical, Industrial & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents finite element modeling procedure for rate-dependent elastic-plastic nonhomogeneous carbon steel plates subjected to dynamic loads. The steel plate consists of two ductile materials. We utilize a modified rule of mixture and linear strain-rate dependence to derive constitutive relations which are then implemented in ABAQUS/Explicit through user subroutine. Validation of the developed procedure is partially made with Steel 1018. Comparative numerical study is done between Steel 1018 and the nonhomogeneous plate. Displacements, stresses and relevant energy terms are calculated and compared for various sets of material configurations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Eigenfunction Expansions Associated With The One-Dimensional Schrödinger Operator, Daphne Gilbert Jan 2013

Eigenfunction Expansions Associated With The One-Dimensional Schrödinger Operator, Daphne Gilbert

Articles

We consider the form of eigenfunction expansions associated with the time-independent Schrödinger operator on the line, under the assumption that the limit point case holds at both of the infinite endpoints. It is well known that in this situation the multiplicity of the operator may be one or two, depending on properties of the potential function. Moreover, for values of the spectral parameter in the upper half complex plane, there exist Weyl solutions associated with the restrictions of the operator to the negative and positive half-lines respectively, together with corresponding Titchmarsh-Weyl functions.

Applications Of Fourier Analysis To Audio Signal Processing: An Investigation Of Chord Detection Algorithms, Nathan Lenssen Jan 2013

Applications Of Fourier Analysis To Audio Signal Processing: An Investigation Of Chord Detection Algorithms, Nathan Lenssen

CMC Senior Theses

The discrete Fourier transform has become an essential tool in the analysis of digital signals. Applications have become widespread since the discovery of the Fast Fourier Transform and the rise of personal computers. The field of digital signal processing is an exciting intersection of mathematics, statistics, and electrical engineering. In this study we aim to gain understanding of the mathematics behind algorithms that can extract chord information from recorded music. We investigate basic music theory, introduce and derive the discrete Fourier transform, and apply Fourier analysis to audio files to extract spectral data.

Second Order Approximations In Sequential Point Estimation Of The Probability Of Zero In Poisson Distribution, Eisa Mahmoudi, Mohammad Hatami Kamin Jan 2013

Second Order Approximations In Sequential Point Estimation Of The Probability Of Zero In Poisson Distribution, Eisa Mahmoudi, Mohammad Hatami Kamin

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the analysis of the count data, the Poisson model becomes overtly restrictive in the case of over-dispersed or under-dispersed data. When count data are under-dispersed, specific models such as generalized linear models (GLM) are proposed. Other examples are the zero-inflated Poisson model (ZIP) and zero-truncated Poisson model (ZTP), which have been used in literature to deal with an excess or absence of zeros in count data. Thus having a knowledge of the probability of zeros and its estimation in Poisson distribution can be significant and useful. Some estimation problems with unknown parameter cannot attain minimum risk where the sample …

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Today, software has become deeply woven into the fabric of our lives. The quality of the software we depend on needs to be ensured at every phase of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). An analyst uses the requirements engineering process to gather and analyze system requirements in the early stages of the SDLC. An undetected problem at the beginning of the project can carry all the way through to the deployed product.

The Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) serves as a tool to demonstrate how requirements are addressed by the design and implementation elements throughout the entire software development lifecycle. …

Automatic Detection Of Abnormal Behavior In Computing Systems, James Frank Roberts Jan 2013

Automatic Detection Of Abnormal Behavior In Computing Systems, James Frank Roberts

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

I present RAACD, a software suite that detects misbehaving computers in large computing systems and presents information about those machines to the system administrator. I build this system using preexisting anomaly detection techniques. I evaluate my methods using simple synthesized data, real data containing coerced abnormal behavior, and real data containing naturally occurring abnormal behavior. I find that the system adequately detects abnormal behavior and significantly reduces the amount of uninteresting computer health data presented to a system administrator.
