Improved Method For Quantifying The Air-Sea Flux Of Volatile And Semi-Volatile Organic Carbon, Emily Hauser, Rebecca M. Dickhut, Renee Falconer, Andrew S. Wozniak

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A method for quantifying the diffusive air-sea exchange of gaseous organic carbon (OC) was developed. OC compounds were separated into two operational pools-those that were kinetically air limited in diffusion across the air-sea interface and those that were water limited-during simultaneous air/water sampling. The method separates OC compounds into low Henry's law constant (low-H) semivolatile OC (SOC) and high Henry's law constant (high-H) volatile OC (VOC) pools that can be categorized by relating diffusion kinetic parameters to Henry's Law constant. Air limited (low-H; H << similar to 0.1 L atm mol(-1)) compounds were collected in pure water traps and were quantified as dissolved OC, whereas …

Silver Nanoparticles Induce Developmental Stage-Specific Embryonic Phenotypes In Zebrafish, Kerry J. Lee, Lauren M. Browning, Prakash D. Nallathamby, Christopher J. Osgood, Xiao-Hong Nancy Xu

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Much is anticipated from the development and deployment of nanomaterials in biological organisms, but concerns remain regarding their biocompatibility and target specificity. Here we report our study of the transport, biocompatibility and toxicity of purified and stable silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs, 13.1 ± 2.5 nm in diameter) upon the specific developmental stages of zebrafish embryos using single NP plasmonic spectroscopy. We find that single Ag NPs passively diffuse into five different developmental stages of embryos (cleavage, early-gastrula, early-segmentation, late-segmentation, and hatching stages), showing stage-independent diffusion modes and diffusion coefficients. Notably, the Ag NPs induce distinctive stage and dose-dependent phenotypes and …

To further our understanding of the effects of biomass burning emissions on atmospheric composition, the BORTAS campaign (BOReal forest fires on Tropospheric oxidants over the Atlantic using Aircraft and Satellites) was conducted on 12 July to 3 August 2011 during the boreal forest fire season in Canada. The simultaneous aerial, ground and satellite measurement campaign sought to record instances of boreal biomass burning to measure the tropospheric volume mixing ratios (VMRs) of short- and long-lived trace molecular species from biomass burning emissions. The goal was to investigate the connection between the composition and the distribution of these pyrogenic outflows and …

In this paper, we present a HARMonized dataset of OZone profiles (HARMOZ) based on limb and occultation measurements from Envisat (GOMOS, MIPAS and SCIAMACHY), Odin (OSIRIS, SMR) and SCISAT (ACE-FTS) satellite instruments. These measurements provide high-vertical-resolution ozone profiles covering the altitude range from the upper troposphere up to the mesosphere in years 2001-2012. HARMOZ has been created in the framework of the European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative project. The harmonized dataset consists of original retrieved ozone profiles from each instrument, which are screened for invalid data by the instrument teams. While the original ozone profiles are presented in different …

We observed ozone O3 in the vertical region between 250 and 0.0005 hPa (~ 12-96 km) using the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) of the International Space Station (ISS) between 12 October 2009 and 21 April 2010. The new 4K superconducting heterodyne receiver technology of SMILES allowed us to obtain a one order of magnitude better signal-to-noise ratio for the O3 line observation compared to past spaceborne microwave instruments. The non-sun-synchronous orbit of the ISS allowed us to observe O3 at various local times. We assessed the quality of the vertical …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Observations of the mesospheric semi-annual oscillation (MSAO) in the equatorial region have been reported dating back several decades. Seasonal variations in both species densities and airglow emissions are well documented. The extensive observations available offer an excellent case study for comparison with model simulations. A broad range of MSAO measurements is summarised with emphasis on the 80-100 km region. The objective here is not to address directly the complicated driving forces of the MSAO, but rather to employ a combination of observations and model simulations to estimate the limits of some of the underlying dynamical processes. Photochemical model simulations are …

Sparse Ridge Fusion For Linear Regression, Nozad Mahmood Jan 2013

Sparse Ridge Fusion For Linear Regression, Nozad Mahmood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For a linear regression, the traditional technique deals with a case where the number of observations n more than the number of predictor variables p (n > p). In the case n < p, the classical method fails to estimate the coefficients. A solution of the problem is the case of correlated predictors is provided in this thesis. A new regularization and variable selection is proposed under the name of Sparse Ridge Fusion (SRF). In the case of highly correlated predictor, the simulated examples and a real data show that the SRF always outperforms the lasso, eleastic net, and the S-Lasso, and the results show that the SRF selects more predictor variables than the sample size n while the maximum selected variables by lasso is n size.

Knowledge Extraction From Survey Data Using Neural Networks, Khan Imran, Arun Kulkarni Jan 2013

Knowledge Extraction From Survey Data Using Neural Networks, Khan Imran, Arun Kulkarni

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surveys are an important tool for researchers. It is increasingly important to develop powerful means for analyzing such data and to extract knowledge that could help in decision-making. Survey attributes are typically discrete data measured on a Likert scale. The process of classification becomes complex if the number of survey attributes is large. Another major issue in Likert-Scale data is the uniqueness of tuples. A large number of unique tuples may result in a large number of patterns. The main focus of this paper is to propose an efficient knowledge extraction method that can extract knowledge in terms of rules. …

Letter Of Purpose Of The Feminist Evolutionary Psychology Society, T. Joel Wade

Faculty Journal Articles

It has been almost five years since the formation of the Feminist Evolutionary Psychology Society (FEPS), which was created with the hopes of drawing attention to issues that influence women’s role in evolution. In those years, FEPS has changed into a more structured society with clear aims. In this letter, we review the rationale for creating FEPS, as well as how we structured FEPS to be an effective organization. The majority of the letter pertains to four distinct goals of FEPS that we will continue to address in the future. These goals are to investigate the active role of women …

Satellite measurements from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) are used to examine the global, seasonal variations of several hydrocarbons, including carbon monoxide (CO), ethane (C2H6), acetylene (C2H2), and hydrogen cyanide (HCN). We focus on quantifying large-scale seasonal behavior from the middle troposphere to the stratosphere, particularly in the tropics, and furthermore make detailed comparisons with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM) chemistry climate model (incorporating tropospheric photochemistry, time-varying hydrocarbon emissions, and meteorological fields nudged from reanalysis). Comparisons with Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements of CO are also included …

A Preliminary Examination Of An In Situ Dual Dye Approach To Measuring Light Fluxes In Lotic Systems, Elizabeth C. Minor, Elizabeth James, Jay A. Austin, Veronica Nelson, Ryan Lusk, Kenneth Mopper

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Light is a critical parameter in aquatic ecosystems, affecting primary production and in situ photochemistry. However, measuring light exposure for suspended particles or dissolved components in a dynamic water column can be challenging with existing Eulerian approaches. Here, we assess the simultaneous deployment of two dyes differing in photolability (rhodamine WT and fluorescein) as a Lagrangian measure of sunlight exposure in a lotic system. Fluorescein is sensitive to light exposure; rhodamine WT is relatively photostable. We examined dye fluorescence at various pH, salinity, and temperature conditions. We also tested dye photolability as a function of pH and wavelength range. In …

Leaf characteristics provide many useful clues for taxonomy. We used a back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) and C-support vector machines (C-SVMs) to classify 47 species from 3 sections of genus Camellia (16 from sect. Chrysanthae, 16 from sect. Tuberculata, and 15 from sect. Paracamellia). The classification model was constructed based on 7 leaf anatomy attributes including, area of adaxial epidermal cell, thickness of adaxial epidermal cell, thickness of palisade parenchyma, thickness of total leaf, thickness of spongy parenchyma, thickness of abaxial epidermal cell, and area of abaxial epidermal cell. Model parameters of C-SVM, comprising regularization parameter (C) and kernel parameter …

Evaluation Of A New Method For Large-Scale And Gene-Targeted Next Generation Dna Sequencing In Nonmodel Species, Ted Cosart Jan 2013

Evaluation Of A New Method For Large-Scale And Gene-Targeted Next Generation Dna Sequencing In Nonmodel Species, Ted Cosart

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The efficient method called exon capture provides for sequencing genes genome-wide, targeting candidate genes, and sampling specific exons within genes. Although developed for model species with available whole genome sequences, the method can capture exons in nonmodel species using the genomic resources of a related model species. How close the relatives must be for effective exon capture is not known. The work herein demonstrates cross-taxa capture in ungulates, using the domestic cow genome as a reference. It also describes a computer program designed for collecting exon sequences for exon capture, allowing users to set per-gene and overall base pair (bp) …

Beyond School Finance: Refocusing Education Reform Litigation To Realize The Deferred Dream Of Education Equality And Adequacy, Jared S. Buszin

Emory Law Journal

The academic achievement gap between poor, minority students and their wealthier white peers has been one of the most troubling and persistent policy problems in the United States throughout its history. For the past forty years, education reformers have turned to the courts to increase educational opportunities for minority and impoverished children by increasing their access to funding. Success in court has been mixed. While the Supreme Court’s decision in San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez foreclosed the possibility of a federal right to equalized education expenditures, education reform plaintiffs in many states have been able to secure a …

Using Unsolicited Ratings To Regulate The Credit Rating Agencies, Sofya Abdurakhmanova

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

Unsolicited ratings have long been overlooked in the investment landscape and issuer pay models. Although Congress has lost its confidence in the credit rating agencies’ reputation theory and is now considering a semi-closed market as the only viable solution to the conflict of interest problem, financial scholars have proposed the Inequality model using unsolicited ratings and focusing on a reputational theory that could lead to more stringent rating standards. This Note argues that it is possible to achieve the Inequality for unsolicited ratings by utilizing the already required disclosures and making a few enhancements. This Note proposes that this will …

The Promise Of Parentheticals: An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Parentheticals In Federal Appellate Briefs, Michael D. Murray Jan 2013

The Promise Of Parentheticals: An Empirical Study Of The Use Of Parentheticals In Federal Appellate Briefs, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article on current trends in briefing reports an empirical study of the use of parentheticals in federal appellate court briefs submitted between February 1, 2011, and July 31, 2011. The study was designed to answer this question: How are parentheticals currently used for rhetorical purposes in appellate briefs to explain a synthesis of authorities? My hypothesis entering the study was that parentheticals currently are used beyond a simple informational function in citation forms for four rhetorical purposes: (1) to quote and highlight portions of authorities ("quotation" function), (2) to explain and illustrate the principles induced from a synthesis of …

Agroforestry And Smallholder Farmers: Climate Change Adaptation Through Sustainable Land Use, Colin Mccabe Jan 2013

Agroforestry And Smallholder Farmers: Climate Change Adaptation Through Sustainable Land Use, Colin Mccabe

Capstone Collection

Agriculture in the developing world will be extremely hard hit by climate change, and smallholder farmers in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) are among the most vulnerable to its impacts. There is a range of agricultural adaptations to climate change, and each context demands a unique appraisal of impacts and adaptations based on specific geography, local climate variability and expected change, and social conditions. The term “climate-smart agriculture” (CSA) has come to embody a set of practices in crop and livestock cultivation that 1) reduce greenhouse gas emissions (climate change mitigation), 2) build resilience to the impacts of climate change for …
