The Ezafat Suffix: The Syntax-Semantics Interface, Ahmed Saeed Manati Sep 2013

The Ezafat Suffix: The Syntax-Semantics Interface, Ahmed Saeed Manati

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Any discussion of Dari noun phrases pays special attention to Ezafat and the way it behaves. Ezafat is of great importance to understanding the underlying structure of a Dari noun phrase. Much of this thesis uses the methodologies and tools provided by generative syntax to determine the status of Ezafat and to answer a number of questions posed by Ezafat. I hypothesize that Ezafat belongs to a functional category which is base-generated under D and its function is to mark nouns for genitive case. In addition, the analysis of Ezafat entails the classification of most Dari prepositions as a subcategory …

The Use Of Politeness Strategies In Email Discussions About Taboo Topics, Katrina Pariera Sep 2013

The Use Of Politeness Strategies In Email Discussions About Taboo Topics, Katrina Pariera

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Computer-mediated communication, such as email, offers us a chance to understand how social relationships are built and maintained in an environment in which interlocutors not only lack the paralinguistic that are vital to face-to-face conversation, but are participating in a medium which has had little time to develop rules of conduct. According to Brown and Levinson (1987) people will use certain politeness strategies to enhance face between themselves and their interlocutors. These strategies will depend on the level of intimacy between the participants, and the seriousness of the situation. In this study I compare the politeness strategies used by 29 …

Molding The History Of A Maritime Empire: The Role Of The Thirteenth‐Century Mosaics Of San Marco In Reforming The Venetian Past, Heather Mccambly Sep 2013

Molding The History Of A Maritime Empire: The Role Of The Thirteenth‐Century Mosaics Of San Marco In Reforming The Venetian Past, Heather Mccambly

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

The mosaics of the Venetian Church of San Marco embody how this empire used imagery for political and ecclesiastical purposes. The church of San Marco is recognized as a force which drew the island fragments of primitive Venice into a unified city and empire. This paper will examine the thirteenth-century mosaics by analyzing a variety of factors in the visual environment and the iconography of the mosaics themselves. First, I will examine briefly the nature medieval visuality and the previous architectural and artistic tradition within San Marco, moving then to analysis of the mosaics of the Old Testament cycle, the …

An Bó Bheannaithe: Cattle Symbolism In Traditional Irish Folklore, Myth, And Archaeology, Amy Sherwood Sep 2013

An Bó Bheannaithe: Cattle Symbolism In Traditional Irish Folklore, Myth, And Archaeology, Amy Sherwood

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

This paper explores the role cattle played in Iron Age Irish society, in their sociopolitical and economic systems, as a means of subsistence, and finally as a symbol within their belief system. Religious traditions play an integral role in any society and have a profound and systemic effect on many other aspects of culture, and should therefore be of great interest to archaeologists. However, belief systems might not be well-represented by material culture. In order to potentially understand the relationship between Iron Age Irish economy and religion, in this case as it pertains to cattle, it is necessary to make …

Technology And Pedagogy: The Future Of Less Commonly Taught Languages, Meredith Kersley Coy, Dr. Michael Bush Sep 2013

Technology And Pedagogy: The Future Of Less Commonly Taught Languages, Meredith Kersley Coy, Dr. Michael Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

One of the goals of the BYU Center for Language Studies is to improve the basic Swahili course in order to support the African studies minor. An initial concern in teaching such less commonly taught languages is the lack of qualified teachers. In many cases technology is the solution to this problem. Creating on-line lesson materials that are pedagogically sound facilitates instruction in two ways. First, teachers do not have to be as strictly qualified because much of the burden is shifted to lesson plans that are already completed and available on-line. Second, students receive authentic language exposure and instruction …

“Through A Glass Darkly”: Portrayal Of The Mormons In Nineteenth-Century American Periodical Literature, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. Cynthia Hallen Sep 2013

“Through A Glass Darkly”: Portrayal Of The Mormons In Nineteenth-Century American Periodical Literature, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. Cynthia Hallen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the nineteenth century the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, then known primarily as the Mormon Church, was a subject of great controversy in American periodical literature. Major magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly, Scribner’s, Harper’s, The North American Review, and The Century published articles about the Mormon people. While working as a research assistant for Dr. Cynthia Hallen, documenting literary influences on Emily Dickinson, I came across several of these articles and wondered how the Mormon Church would have been portrayed to readers such as Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the rest of the nineteenth-century American …

The Roles Of Tone And Intensity In The Perception Of Spanish Intonation Patterns, Angela Weech, Dr. J. Halvor Clegg Sep 2013

The Roles Of Tone And Intensity In The Perception Of Spanish Intonation Patterns, Angela Weech, Dr. J. Halvor Clegg

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Even among linguists, there exists some disagreement as to the contribution that various acoustic parameters make or don’t make to the perception of Spanish intonation patterns. The three parameters commonly in question are tone, intensity, and duration. While it is common to only include tone in the definition of intonation, this project adopts the idea that “the multitude of functions intonation actually has in communication requires more than just pitch variation for its fulfilment.” I designed this project to focus on the parameters of tone and intensity in order to test the hypothesis that the perception of intonation patterns in …

Gathering Media For A Turkish Language Course, Laura Ann Knight, Dr. Michael Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When a person visits another country with which they are unfamiliar, it can be hard to understand both the language and the culture of the people. It can be very useful to learn a bit about a country, its people, and language before visiting it. In this project we developed a multimedia computer based program that could be used by business people, tourists, exchange students, or any person interested in being introduced to life in another country. The specific focus of this project was on Turkey.

Motivation And Peer Relations In A Second Grade Spanish-English Dual-Immersion Program, Melinda Clement Hardman Sep 2013

Motivation And Peer Relations In A Second Grade Spanish-English Dual-Immersion Program, Melinda Clement Hardman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While there are many different models for how motivation works and what it is in second language acquisition, Gardner’s model dominated the research for over 30 years and continues to be the most well-known (Oxford 1996). Gardner explained motivation in second language acquisition with what he called the Socio-Educational Model (Gardner 1998). This model distinguished between three levels of motivation which move upward toward a broader and broader degree of motivation. At the first level is integrative orientation (An orientation, according to Gardner and Tremblay 1994, is a group of reasons for studying a language). Integrative orientation deals with having …

Crossing Bridges Of Understanding: An Interactive Tutorial For Humanities 201, Rebecca Petersen, Dr. Michael Call

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My goal in creating this tutorial was to “bring to life” some of the sites and treasures studied in the Humanities 201-202 sequence, stimulating student’s interest in the topics and providing support to the faculty teaching the courses. I feel that the module I completed successfully achieves that goal. I created a module, currently accessible in the Humanities PC Computing Lab, entitled, “Vezelay: A Romanesque Masterpiece.”

The Lost Diaries Of Augustin Krämer, Mary Cox, Dr. Rob Mcfarland Sep 2013

The Lost Diaries Of Augustin Krämer, Mary Cox, Dr. Rob Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Virtually every significant study of Samoan culture and language published since 1900 relies on Augustin Krämer’s seminal work die Samoa Inseln. It is unusual for a scholarly ethnography to become so completely accepted and loved by an indigenous people, but die Samoa Inseln is second only to the Bible in its esteem by the Samoan people. Although the original Stuttgart printing was limited, copies of die Samoa Inseln were acquired by his Samoan contemporaries and were lovingly handed down from generation to generation. Today, any copy that is advertised for sale in Samoa is almost instantly purchased. The value of …

Applying And Evaluating The Astm Standard Guide To Quality Assurance In Translation And Localization, Carina Leticia Klemetz Aceves Sep 2013

Applying And Evaluating The Astm Standard Guide To Quality Assurance In Translation And Localization, Carina Leticia Klemetz Aceves

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The ASTM Standard Guide to Quality Assurance in Translation (the name has been shortened as of late) defines the process of translation, and explains among other things the concept of “translation specifications.” Those are parameters that have to be considered in order to ensure that the product resulting from a translation is such that satisfies all parties. The Guide defines a “quality translation” as one that meets the specifications previously defined and discussed by all parties, as opposed to the traditional concept of “one best translation.” There would, therefore, not be one best translation to any given text but there …

Figuring The Text Of Salvation: Text And Image In Guillaume De Digulleville’S Pèlerinage De L’Âme, Anna S. Larsen, Dr. Jesse Hurlbut

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Between the years of 1355 and 1358, Guillaume de Digulleville, a Cistercian monk from Châlis, wrote Le pèlerinage de l’âme, the second poem in a trilogy of allegorical pilgrimages. This poem, along with its predecessor Le pèlerinage de la vie humaine and its successor Le pèlerinage de Jhesu Christ proved to be one of the most popular literary works of the 14th and 15th centuries. Seventy-five known manuscripts exist which contain one or more poems from the trilogy, demonstrating that they circulated through England, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and France. The trilogy was translated into English, Castilian, German, Italian, Dutch and …

Children And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Donna Haig Friedman, Katherine Calano, Marija Bingulac, Christine Miller, Alisa Zeliger Sep 2013

Children And Homelessness In Massachusetts, Donna Haig Friedman, Katherine Calano, Marija Bingulac, Christine Miller, Alisa Zeliger

New England Journal of Public Policy

In Massachusetts, more than half a million children (15% of all children) live in poverty, 30% of all children live with parents who lack secure employment, and 41% live in households with high housing cost burdens. This article examines the root causes of poverty and its links to child homelessness in the state. Though the state has a long-standing progressive political legacy, the well-being of low-income families with children continues to decline. The article offers evidence about the extent of child homelessness and its profound effects on Massachusetts children and youth. The interconnectedness of what are usually thought of as …
