La Actitud Hacia El Castellano En San Antonio, Texas (The Attitude Towards Spanish In San Antonio, Texas), Simone Renee Roberts Jan 2013

La Actitud Hacia El Castellano En San Antonio, Texas (The Attitude Towards Spanish In San Antonio, Texas), Simone Renee Roberts

LSU Master's Theses

The dominant language in the United States is English but there are different minority languages spoken such as Spanish. Today, Spanish can be found in every state and territory of the United States. In Texas, the city of San Antonio is in intense contact with Spanish, partly because of the long history between Texas and Mexico and the constant influx of Hispanic immigrants. This thesis studies the attitude toward Spanish in San Antonio, investigating the uses of Spanish and English and the social factors (age, generation, education, gender, etc.) that affect the use of Spanish. Through a questionnaire designed to …

Improving Robustness And Scalability Of Available Ner Systems, Amber Mckenzie

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research is to study and develop techniques to adapt existing NER resources to serve the needs of a broad range of organizations without expert NLP manpower. My methods emphasize usability, robustness and scalability of existing NER systems to ensure maximum functionality to a broad range of organizations. Usability is facilitated by ensuring that the methodologies are compatible with any available open-source NER tagger or data set, thus allowing organizations to choose resources that are easy to deploy and maintain and fit their requirements. One way of making use of available tagged data would be to aggregate …

Saga And Socialization In Jesuit Institutions, Charles Wilder Puls Jan 2013

Saga And Socialization In Jesuit Institutions, Charles Wilder Puls

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The 28 institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities share a strong heritage dating back to the founding of the first Jesuit institution in Messina, Sicily, in 1548, by Ignatius of Loyola and the newly founded Society of Jesus. Though formally independent of the Catholic Church, this Jesuit tradition is a core value of these institutions, and their presidents came together to articulate this value through The Jesuit, Catholic Mission of U.S. Jesuit Colleges and Universities. In this consensus statement, there is a rich sense of saga and socialization. The consensus statement is used to demonstrate elements of …

Language Policy In Azerbaijan Toward Sustainable Change, Jamala I. Mammadova Jan 2013

Language Policy In Azerbaijan Toward Sustainable Change, Jamala I. Mammadova

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan has been working towards a way to improve the Azerbaijani language as the sole state language of the country. The continuing war over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict slowed the speed of all these ameliorating processes. There are certain issues in the field of language policy in Azerbaijan. It will take several decades for the country to remove all the obstacles and to make its way to the peak in the field of language.

How We Think Mādhyamikas Think: Reply To Tillemans, Yasuo Deguchi, Jay L. Garfield, Graham Priest Jan 2013

How We Think Mādhyamikas Think: Reply To Tillemans, Yasuo Deguchi, Jay L. Garfield, Graham Priest

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

In his paper in this Issue, ‘ “How do Mādhyamikas Think?” Revisited’, Tom Tillemans reflects on his paper “How do Mādhyamikas Think?” (2009), itself a reply to earlier work of ours (Deguchi, Garfield, and Priest 2008, Garfield and Priest 2003). There is much we agree with in these non-dogmatic and open-minded papers. Still, we have some disagreements. We begin with a response to Tillemans’ first thoughts, and then turn to his second thoughts.

Human Memory Retention And Recall Processes. A Review Of Eeg And Fmri Studies, Hafeezullah Amin, Aamir S. Malik Jan 2013

Human Memory Retention And Recall Processes. A Review Of Eeg And Fmri Studies, Hafeezullah Amin, Aamir S. Malik

Neurosciences

Human memory is an important concept in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Our brain is actively engaged in functions of learning and memorization. Generally, human memory has been classified into 2 groups: short-term/working memory, and long-term memory. Using different memory paradigms and brain mapping techniques, psychologists and neuroscientists have identified 3 memory processes: encoding, retention, and recall. These processes have been studied using EEG and functional MRI (fMRI) in cognitive and neuroscience research. This study reviews previous research reported for human memory processes, particularly brain behavior in memory retention and recall processes with the use of EEG and fMRI. We discuss …

Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein Jan 2013

Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein

Theses and Dissertations

Narrative, often considered synonymous with “story,” can be viewed from a structuralist perspective and analyzed independent of any particular content. Breaking narrative into categories of story and discourse, this autonomous structure makes possible a translation of content from one form to another. The various media and form types common in graphic design can serve as both recipient and translator of narratives, converting content into a framework that includes the concept of craftsmanship, aesthetic components and specifications, legibility and composition, and the physical form of the designed object. To examine how this framework functions in practice, I have developed a series …

How Often Is Employee Anger An Insider Risk Ii? Detecting And Measuring Negative Sentiment Versus Insider Risk In Digital Communications–Comparison Between Human Raters And Psycholinguistic Software, Eric Shaw, Maria Payri, Michael Cohn, Ilene R. Shaw Jan 2013

How Often Is Employee Anger An Insider Risk Ii? Detecting And Measuring Negative Sentiment Versus Insider Risk In Digital Communications–Comparison Between Human Raters And Psycholinguistic Software, Eric Shaw, Maria Payri, Michael Cohn, Ilene R. Shaw

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This research uses two recently introduced observer rating scales, (Shaw et al., 2013) for the identification and measurement of negative sentiment (the Scale for Negativity in Text or SNIT) and insider risk (Scale of Indicators of Risk in Digital Communication or SIRDC) in communications to test the performance of psycholinguistic software designed to detect indicators of these risk factors. The psycholinguistic software program, WarmTouch (WT), previously used for investigations, appeared to be an effective means for locating communications scored High or Medium in negative sentiment by the SNIT or High in insider risk by the SIRDC within a randomly selected …

Facing With Non-Nativeness While Teaching: Enacting Voices Of International Teaching Assistants Of Basic Communication Courses, Arata Miyazaki, Kaori Yamada Jan 2013

Facing With Non-Nativeness While Teaching: Enacting Voices Of International Teaching Assistants Of Basic Communication Courses, Arata Miyazaki, Kaori Yamada

Basic Communication Course Annual

This paper presents our voices as international teaching assistants (ITAs) of public speaking courses at American universities and discusses how non-native English speaker identity, or non-nativeness is displayed, developed, and negotiated through our inter-actions with both native and other non-native speakers. Regarding our companionship as ITAs of public speaking as a subject of study, we engage in narrative co-construction about our survival in graduate programs. We argue that non-nativeness is not monolithic but is more relational and multilayered than it tends to be assumed. Obtaining a teaching position was an epiphany for our relationship, changing the perceptions about and attitude …

Discriminating Speech: The Heterophilia Of The Freedom Of Speech Doctrine, Zvi Triger Jan 2013

Discriminating Speech: The Heterophilia Of The Freedom Of Speech Doctrine, Zvi Triger

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

In this Article, I seek to shed light on freedom ofspeech jurisprudence as it is reflected in the Snyder v. Phelps and Skokie cases, as well as in two analogous Israeli cases, namely petitions of members of the extreme right against the pride parades in Jerusalem, as well as petitions by the same petitioners for police permits to hold anti-Arab processions in the Arab town of Umm al-Fahm.

Comparing the cases, I identify the moral relativity built into the interpretation offreedom of expression doctrine in both countries. I introduce the concept of discriminating speech, which is speech that is designed …

The Rebranding Of The Brooklyn Nets : A Discourse Analysis, Michael Shane Wunderlich Jan 2013

The Rebranding Of The Brooklyn Nets : A Discourse Analysis, Michael Shane Wunderlich

LSU Master's Theses

This study examined the rebranding of the Brooklyn Nets. A discourse analysis was conducted that observed messages generated by the Brooklyn Nets, selected media sources and fans regarding a number of elements relating to the Brooklyn Nets’ rebrand. Branding is important to businesses and building brand equity and brand associations with the external public is important for businesses looking to succeed in a profit driven world. This is no different for professional sports franchises who also focus on building brand equity and brand associations with sports fans and other members of the general public. By first examining the methods taken …

Effect Of Rate Reduction On Speech Intelligibility In Individuals With Dysarthria, Zachary Hall Jan 2013

Effect Of Rate Reduction On Speech Intelligibility In Individuals With Dysarthria, Zachary Hall

LSU Master's Theses

This study examined how speech rate reduction affects speech intelligibility in speakers with dysarthria associated with diverse neurological conditions. Three speakers with dysarthria were recorded reading a paragraph using conversational and reduced speech rates. The samples of both the conversational and slow rates were digitally edited to include silent pauses at the speakers’ natural breaks. The samples were then segmented into breath group utterances. Five samples with the greatest rate reductions from each speaker were used as stimuli, each presented in four rate conditions: conversational, slow, synthesized conversational, and synthesized slow. The listeners rated the intelligibility of 60 samples using …

Pre-Service Teachers: An Analysis Of Reading Instruction In High Needs Districts Dual Language Classrooms, Michael Whitacre, Zulmaris Diaz, J. Joy Esquierdo Jan 2013

Pre-Service Teachers: An Analysis Of Reading Instruction In High Needs Districts Dual Language Classrooms, Michael Whitacre, Zulmaris Diaz, J. Joy Esquierdo

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Pre-service teachers need opportunities to apply theory and connect to best practices as they teach in classroom settings be it, whole or small group. For many pre-service teachers often times their experience is limited to simply watching instruction or working with small groups of students (Pryor & Kuhn, 2004). The student teaching experience is a critical component of the teacher preparation program. Through the use of the English Language Learner Classroom Observation Instrument (ELLCOI), and researcher observation the hope is that these will aid in bringing to light the instructional activities used by pre-service teachers during reading instruction with ELLs. …

The Use Of A Virtual Guest Speaker As A Catalyst For Deep Learning, Alcione N. Ostorga, Peter Farruggio Jan 2013

The Use Of A Virtual Guest Speaker As A Catalyst For Deep Learning, Alcione N. Ostorga, Peter Farruggio

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Teaching undergraduate students as they prepare to become bilingual teachers is often a challenge due to their maturational development and the logistical limitations of college courses. Nevertheless, teacher educators must foster preservice teachers’ understanding of factors that impact learning and academic success. This article analyses the use of a virtual guest speaker in an asynchronous discussion as a way to promote critical analysis of policy issues which superseded the memorization of concepts taught in the course. Analysis reveals that the virtual guest speaker served as a catalyst for critical thought about the course content.

Where Do Transnational Terrorist Organizations Operate? : The Impact Of State Capacity And Civil Conflict, Rebecca Noto Jan 2013

Where Do Transnational Terrorist Organizations Operate? : The Impact Of State Capacity And Civil Conflict, Rebecca Noto

LSU Master's Theses

Despite overlapping explanatory theories for the occurrence of terrorism and civil conflict, these two phenomena have largely been studied in isolation. This study addresses this gap in the conflict literature by investigating the influence of state capacity and civil conflict on the presence of a transnational terrorist organization’s base of operations. It is postulated that weak state capacity provides the opportunity to organize while civil conflict increases this opportunity via the transmission of information on and the reduction in the state’s capacity to prevent organization formation. This hypothesis is then tested by estimating a logistic regression analysis for the years …

Interiors Imagined And Remembered, Andrew Brown Jan 2013

Interiors Imagined And Remembered, Andrew Brown

LSU Master's Theses

My paintings are about the concept of home and how this notion constantly evolves with each successive experience, changing how I perceive and experience interior spaces. The imagery in my work is limited to common forms such as cardboard boxes and shelving, as these are elements that are easily related to, and that speak to everyday experiences. Color, space and form are manipulated to work within and at times subvert the implied narrative of each painting. Although memory remains an active part of my process, imagination and the exploration of paint’s physical and expressive possibilities have risen to the fore. …

Cultivating Bilingual Learners’ Language Arts Knowledge: A Framework For Successful Teaching, Isela Almaguer, J. Joy Esquierdo Jan 2013

Cultivating Bilingual Learners’ Language Arts Knowledge: A Framework For Successful Teaching, Isela Almaguer, J. Joy Esquierdo

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

It is essential to support bilingual learners’ language and academic development; however, teaching second language learners English has taken precedence over teaching content area knowledge and vocabulary, specifically for language arts. The focus has shifted from content area instruction to primarily second language instruction due to an increasingly diverse population and an increasing number of bilingual learners in formal school settings. This article introduces a framework for accomplishing both linguistic and content literacy simultaneously. The framework takes into account the four elements of the principles of learning, learner appropriate pedagogy, contextual interaction theory, student language (L1/L2) proficiency level, and a …

The Influence Of Levels Of Processing On Spanish-English Bilingual False Memory, Hanna I. Giraldo Jan 2013

The Influence Of Levels Of Processing On Spanish-English Bilingual False Memory, Hanna I. Giraldo

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this study we investigated the role of semantic-processing on memory for Spanish-English bilinguals using the DRM paradigm (Deese, 1959; Roediger & McDermott, 1995), a procedure commonly used to elicit false memories. Participants were tested in within-language (i.e., encoding language and recall language match) and across-language (i.e., encoding language and recall language mismatch). The results indicated higher levels of recall for semantic processing in all conditions, however at the cost of higher thematically-related intrusions. These findings are consistent with the “more is less” pattern (Toglia, Neuschatz, & Goodwin, 1999), wherein greater correct recall is accompanied by greater false recall. In …

A Manual For Caregivers Of Infants And Young Children Who Are At Risk For Or Have Experienced A Tbi: Prevention And Education, Meghan Enabnit, Stephanie Gubbels Jan 2013

A Manual For Caregivers Of Infants And Young Children Who Are At Risk For Or Have Experienced A Tbi: Prevention And Education, Meghan Enabnit, Stephanie Gubbels

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The prevalence of infant TBI, 0 to 4 years of age, is one of the highest population groups to experience TBI (Faul, Xu, Wald, & Coronado, 2010). The age group between 0-4 years old has contributed to 251,546 emergency department visits, 15,239 hospital visits, and 998 deaths (Faul et aI., 2010). The purpose of this scholarly project is to increase awareness and knowledge of infant and young child traumatic brain injury across all contexts, to reduce incidence of traumatic brain injury and re-injury and to promote development for the vulnerable, at-risk, infant and young child population through the creation and …

Virtue Of Attunement: Contributions Of Yuasa Yasuo's Embodied Self-Cultivation Practices To Ted Toadvine's Ecophenomenology Of Difference, Pailyn Brown Jan 2013

Virtue Of Attunement: Contributions Of Yuasa Yasuo's Embodied Self-Cultivation Practices To Ted Toadvine's Ecophenomenology Of Difference, Pailyn Brown

Honors Papers

I argue that Ted Toadvine’s Ecophenomenology presents a concept of difference that is totalizing and has a concept of the body that is a-historical and universal. By using Yuasa Yasuo’s ideas that the body is culturally constructed and can be reconstituted through repeated bodily practices, I revise Toadvine’s totalizing difference, emphasizing that we can use our bodies to increasingly learn about difference. I call this a Virtue of Attunement.

Reconsidering The Puebloan Languages In A Southwestern Areal Context, Michael Sklar Everdell Jan 2013

Reconsidering The Puebloan Languages In A Southwestern Areal Context, Michael Sklar Everdell

Honors Papers

Areal linguistics is the study of diffused linguistic features across different languages which are geographically contiguous and culturally connected. My research attempts to standardize definitions for the vocabulary surrounding linguistic diffusion which will apply cross-areally. I also examine these definitions within the case study of the Pueblo and Southwest regions of North America. These areas have been culturally linked, but no agreement has been made as to whether or not these make up a linguistic area with sub-areas or are both part of a much larger area including the Great Basin, southern Plains, and southern Californian languages.

Translating Chris Ware's Lint Into Russian, Matthew Davis Jan 2013

Translating Chris Ware's Lint Into Russian, Matthew Davis

Honors Papers

Comics translation is rarely practiced with any appreciation of the comics medium – rather, comics usually are translated as prose, ignoring the words relationship to pictures. I chose Chris Ware's work, known for pushing the boundaries of comics language, because translating it mandates formal engagement with the comics medium. My project also involved dealing with the problems of translating into a non-native tongue, cultural translation, and placing Ware's comics in the Russian existentialist tradition.
