A Phenomenological Study Of Indonesian Cohort Group's Transformative Learning, Markus Budiraharjo Jan 2013

A Phenomenological Study Of Indonesian Cohort Group's Transformative Learning, Markus Budiraharjo

Dissertations

This study was set to investigate how a cohort of ten Indonesian teachers experienced transformations in their teaching professionalism upon receiving an assignment of instructional leadership training to other school leaders. These ten teachers, who came from three different Indonesian Jesuit high schools and one archdiocese-based educational foundation in Jakarta, belonged to an initiative called Indonesia Secondary Education Development Program (ISEDP) intended to develop instructional leadership skills among school administrators in Indonesia. This six-year initiative (2006-2012) involved three international institutions, namely Loyola University Chicago (LUC), Indonesian Jesuit High Schools Association (IJSA), and Sanata Dharma University (SDU), Indonesia. The goal was …

Let’S Speak!: Design Of A Voice-Controlled Educational Game Suite For Esl Students, Shravya Yeragani Jan 2013

Let’S Speak!: Design Of A Voice-Controlled Educational Game Suite For Esl Students, Shravya Yeragani

Technical Library

Speech applications are currently used successfully in many contexts in which the auditory modality allows users to accomplish tasks efficiently and effectively, such as the automation of banking services normally handled by live agents. Such technology is also increasingly being utilized for language education to teach various aspects of the target language. However, though games are routinely played in language classrooms to help students practice elements of spoken language such as pronunciation and conversational skills, educational speech game software is still not widely available. This project explores technical issues involved in adapting some of these classroom games for inclusion in …

Learning Language Is 'Hard Work', Cheryl A. Hunter, Renee Gutiérrez Jan 2013

Learning Language Is 'Hard Work', Cheryl A. Hunter, Renee Gutiérrez

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

This study provides an interdisciplinary interpretation of literacy practices in teacher education programs and offers ways that non-traditional experience, such as language immersion programs, would be of benefit to pre-service teachers as they learn about how to teach literacy. Coursework in literacy methods offers the knowledge and skills for teaching children who are English learners but may not provide insights into the language acquisition process or challenge teacher’s assumptions about linguistic minority children. Using a critical ethnographic design this study explores pre-service teacher perceptions of the language acquisition process and cultural difference during intensive linguistic and cultural immersion. This research …

The Dynamics Of Ethnic Identity In Iranian Azerbaijan, Fereydoun Safizadeh Jan 2013

The Dynamics Of Ethnic Identity In Iranian Azerbaijan, Fereydoun Safizadeh

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

Today out of the seventy million population of Iran nearly twenty-five million are Turkish speakers. At least two thirds of this population lives in the provinces of East-West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, and the rest in and around the cities of Zanjan, Qazvin, Karaj and Tehran. Generally, the people in these areas refer to themselves as Turks, and they are Shia’ Muslims. This paper explores from an anthropological and ethnographic perspective the relationship of Azeri-Turkish speaking and Persian-speaking Iranians in the present and everyday spheres of social life. The objective is for a fine grained examination of this minority-majority encounter and what …

They Define You Still, Harrison Ford Jan 2013

They Define You Still, Harrison Ford

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

The following essay examines the analysis of gay male identity, a recent area of study in the past half century. It acknowledges the humanity of this group, a group that has been historically demonized as well as marginalized. By assigning gay men labels, stereotypes, and negative qualities, external forces have been able to strip them of their humanity. They even believe the demonization that they are given and it impacts who they are as not their true selves. While the essay individualizes specific experiences, the same overarching theme of humanity in terms of group definition steers the concept behind it.

Language In The Common Core, Frank Daniello Jan 2013

Language In The Common Core, Frank Daniello

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

In elementary education, we continue to work towards making the demands of language use (oral or written) explicit to students, especially linguistically and culturally diverse pupils. States' adoption of the English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will not support us in improving practices unless teachers' linguistic knowledge is developed. Teachers are the catalyst for change in teaching and learning not standards. Developing teachers' understanding of language can be supported using systemic functional linguistics (SFL). This theory provides the necessary lens for examining how language functions in texts to make meaning. This approach to language should be applied …

The Traits, Characteristics, And Qualities Of International Christian School Teachers Valued By Third Culture Kids, Dale B. Linton

Dissertations

The Problem. In this qualitative study, 24 participants, ages 18-30, who had previously attended international Christian schools for at least 2 years at the secondary level, or a combination of 4 years at the primary and middle school levels, were interviewed to determine the traits, characteristics, and qualities they valued in their teachers.

Methodology. Incorporating principles of Grounded Theory, a series of rigorous steps associated with the validity process of Grounded Theory construction was employed. These steps included the simultaneous involvement of the researcher in the data collection and analysis process. Twenty-four participants were interviewed, and written notes were taken …

Improving (Software) Patent Quality Through The Administrative Process, Arti K. Rai Jan 2013

Improving (Software) Patent Quality Through The Administrative Process, Arti K. Rai

Faculty Scholarship

The available evidence indicates that patent quality, particularly in the area of software, needs improvement. This Article argues that even an agency as institutionally constrained as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“PTO”) could implement a portfolio of pragmatic, cost-effective quality improvement strategies. The argument in favor of these strategies draws upon not only legal theory and doctrine but also new data from a PTO software examination unit with relatively strict practices. Strategies that resolve around Section 112 of the patent statute could usefully be deployed at the initial examination stage. Other strategies could be deployed within the new post-issuance …

How Jurors Evaluate Fingerprint Evidence: The Relative Importance Of Match Language, Method Information, And Error Acknowledgment, Brandon L. Garrett, Gregory Mitchell Jan 2013

How Jurors Evaluate Fingerprint Evidence: The Relative Importance Of Match Language, Method Information, And Error Acknowledgment, Brandon L. Garrett, Gregory Mitchell

Faculty Scholarship

Fingerprint examiners use a variety of terms and phrases to describe a finding of a match between a defendant's fingerprints and fingerprint impressions collected from a crime scene. Despite the importance and ubiquity of fingerprint evidence in criminal cases, no prior studies examine how jurors evaluate such evidence. We present two studies examining the impact of different match phrases, method descriptions, and statements about possible examiner error on the weight given to fingerprint identification evidence by laypersons. In both studies, the particular phrase chosen to describe the finding of a match-whether simple and imprecise or detailed and claiming near certainty-had …

Medial Temporal Lobe Volume Predicts Elders’ Everyday Memory, Heather R. Bailey, Jeffrey M. Zacks, David Z. Hambrick, Rose T. Zacks, Denise Head, Christopher A. Kurby, Jesse Q. Sargent Jan 2013

Medial Temporal Lobe Volume Predicts Elders’ Everyday Memory, Heather R. Bailey, Jeffrey M. Zacks, David Z. Hambrick, Rose T. Zacks, Denise Head, Christopher A. Kurby, Jesse Q. Sargent

Peer Reviewed Articles

Deficits in memory for everyday activities are common complaints among healthy and demented older adults. The medial temporal lobes and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex are both affected by aging and early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, and are known to influence performance on laboratory memory tasks. We investigated whether the volume of these structures predicts everyday memory. Cognitively healthy older adults and older adults with mild Alzheimer’s-type dementia watched movies of everyday activities and completed memory tests on the activities. Structural MRI was used to measure brain volume. Medial temporal but not prefrontal volume strongly predicted subsequent memory. Everyday memory depends on segmenting activity …

Regulating Shadows: Financial Regulation And Responsibility Failure, Steven L. Schwarcz Jan 2013

Regulating Shadows: Financial Regulation And Responsibility Failure, Steven L. Schwarcz

Faculty Scholarship

In the modern financial architecture, financial services and products increasingly are provided outside of the traditional banking system—and thus without the need for bank intermediation between capital markets and the users of funds. Most corporate financing, for example, no longer is dependent on bank loans but raised through special-purpose entities, money-market mutual funds, securities lenders, hedge funds, and investment banks. This shift, referred to as “disintermediation” and described as creating a “shadow banking” system, is so radically transforming finance that regulatory scholars need to rethink their assumptions. Two of the fundamental market failures underlying shadow banking—information failure and agency failure—were …

Nonsense And The Freedom Of Speech: What Meaning Means For The First Amendment, Joseph Blocher Jan 2013

Nonsense And The Freedom Of Speech: What Meaning Means For The First Amendment, Joseph Blocher

Faculty Scholarship

A great deal of everyday expression is, strictly speaking, nonsense. But courts and scholars have done little to consider whether or why such meaningless speech, like nonrepresentational art, falls within “the freedom of speech.” If, as many suggest, meaning is what separates speech from sound and expression from conduct, then the constitutional case for nonsense is complicated. And because nonsense is so common, the case is also important — artists like Lewis Carroll and Jackson Pollock are not the only putative “speakers” who should be concerned about the outcome.

This Article is the first to explore thoroughly the relationship between …

The Relationship Between Musical Ability And The Perception And Production Of L2 Prosodic Features, Jun Akiyoshi Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Musical Ability And The Perception And Production Of L2 Prosodic Features, Jun Akiyoshi

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Studies in L2 acquisition have indicated that musically trained individuals are apt to demonstrate better L2 pronunciation skills. As for music, it was recently clarified that some amusiacs demonstrate selective impairment in L1 prosody discrimination. The purpose of this study was to investigate a relationship between amusical L2 learners and their perception and production of L2 prosody. To investigate this, 24 native-Japanese learners of English either in EFL (n=22) or ESL context (n=2) were examined in terms of their musical ability and L2 intonation perception and production. The musical test indicated that there was one amusiac and 10 low-level musical …

Inscriptional Evidence Of Pre-Islamic Classical Arabic: Selected Readings In The Nabataean, Musnad, And Akkadian Inscriptions, Saad D. Abulhab Jan 2013

Inscriptional Evidence Of Pre-Islamic Classical Arabic: Selected Readings In The Nabataean, Musnad, And Akkadian Inscriptions, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

This book investigates the ancient roots of Classical Arabic through detailed tracings and readings of selected, Pre-Islamic, ancient inscriptions from the Northern and Southern Arabian Peninsula. It provides detailed readings of important Akkadian, Nabataean, and old Arabic Musnad inscriptions, including Namarah and the Epic of Gilgamesh inscriptions. The book provides clear inscriptional evidence indicating that Classical Arabic was predominantly utilized in the major population centers of the greater Arabian Peninsula, including Mesopotamia and the Levant regions, many, many centuries before Islam. In his book, the author presents several important new readings. Among them, a new reading of two important Classical …

Buy My Vote: Online Reviews For Sale, Kendall L. Short Jan 2013

Buy My Vote: Online Reviews For Sale, Kendall L. Short

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The Internet has granted consumers access to a wealth of information to use in researching products and services. A substantial portion of this information consists of online consumer reviews, which hold great influence over consumers' purchasing decisions due to their perceived honesty and independence from the company. The problem with relying on these reviews, however, is that real consumers may not be the authors; instead, companies often hire writers to fabricate reviews, known as "opinion spam," which can either be positive for the hiring company or negative toward an innocent competitor. Because these fake reviews are difficult to detect, both …

The Illegal Process: Basic Problems In The Making And Application Of Censorship, James Grimmelmann Jan 2013

The Illegal Process: Basic Problems In The Making And Application Of Censorship, James Grimmelmann

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This essay is a response to Derek Bambauer's article Orwell's Armchair, which proposes "[a] statute enabling censorship of Internet material." Bambauer's theory is process-oriented: it focuses on the institutions that engage in censorship and the procedures that they follow. Accordingly, the essay examines his arguments through the lens of the canonical Legal Process text: Hart and Sacks' The Legal Process. A series of notes and queries inquire whether his proposed statute would limit censorship, regularize it, or legitimate it.

Quantitative Analyses Of Acceptable Noise Level For Air Conduction Listening, Bankole K. Fasanya Jan 2013

Quantitative Analyses Of Acceptable Noise Level For Air Conduction Listening, Bankole K. Fasanya

Dissertations

This study was conducted to develop quantitative models for Acceptable Noise Level (ANL) under air conduction (AC) listening conditions. Experimental results on the effects of frequency bandwidths on ANL under two listening conditions involving earphones and loudspeaker (sound field) with high and low frequencies and babble noise and white noise revealed: (a) there are statistically significant interactions among the background noise types, the background noise frequency bandwidths and signal source; (b) background noise and noise frequency bandwidths have effects on listener discriminability bias toward the noise and the signal intensity; (c) different listening conditions had different ANL thresholds; and (d) …

Talking Back To History: Leanne Howe, Linda Hogan, And Louis Owens's Rewriting Of The Southeastern Native Past Through Fiction, Kimberlee Kaitlyn Hodges

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For years, non-Native anthropologists and historians have endeavored to unravel the inner-workings of Native American culture through close examinations of archeological evidence, Euro-American historical record, and oral histories. Consequently, in an attempt to reclaim and re-appropriate these pasts are the stories written by Native American authors and novelists such as LeAnne Howe (Choctaw), Louis Owens (Choctaw), and Linda Hogan (Chickasaw). Through their writings, one is able to more fully understand the history of Southeastern Native American tribes as they are given insight into what was and is most valued by Native American people to this day such as kinship, spirituality, …

Youth Treatment Adherence At A Rural Community Mental-Health Clinic, Asma S. Ali Jan 2013

Youth Treatment Adherence At A Rural Community Mental-Health Clinic, Asma S. Ali

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between youth and adult psychopathology, and sociodemographic factors and treatment adherence for youth attending outpatient treatment at a rural community mental-health clinic. “Adherence” was defined as attending more than five sessions, while “non-adherence” was defined as attending fewer than or equal to five sessions. Results revealed no significant differences between youth adhering or not adhering to treatment depending on the relation of caregiver to youth or the mode of transportation taken to the clinic. Furthermore, caregiver and youth psychopathology and caregiver’s estimated travel time to the clinic did not predict treatment adherence. Incidentally, examination of …
