Actor-Critic-Based Ink Drop Spread As An Intelligent Controller, Hesam Sagha, Iman Esmaili Paeen Afrakoti, Saeed Bagherishouraki

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces an innovative adaptive controller based on the actor-critic method. The proposed approach employs the ink drop spread (IDS) method as its main engine. The IDS method is a new trend in soft-computing approaches that is a universal fuzzy modeling technique and has been also used as a supervised controller. Its process is very similar to the processing system of the human brain. The proposed actor-critic method uses an IDS structure as an actor and a 2-dimensional plane, representing control variable states, as a critic that estimates the lifetime goodness of each state. This method is fast, simple, …

Implementation Of An Ac Model For Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Reliability Constraints, Amin Mahmoudabad, Masoud Rashidinejad, Majid Zeinaddini-Meymand, Mohsen Rahmani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a hybrid heuristic methodology that employs fuzzy logic for solving the AC transmission network expansion planning (AC-TEP) problem is presented. An enhanced constructive heuristic algorithm aimed at obtaining a significant quality solution for such complicated problems considering contingency is proposed. In order to indicate the severity of the contingency, 2 performance indices, namely the line flow performance index and voltage performance index, are calculated. An interior point method is applied as a nonlinear programming solver to handle such nonconvex optimization problems, while the objective function includes the costs of the new transmission lines as well as the …

Mitigation Of Ssr And Lfo With A Tcsc Based-Conventional Damping Controller Optimized By The Pso Algorithm And A Fuzzy Logic Controller, Hasan Gahramani, Akbar Lak, Murtaza Farsadi, Hossein Hosseini

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The subsynchronous resonance (SSR) phenomenon may occur when a steam turbine-generator is connected to a long transmission line with series compensation. Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices are widely applied to damp the SSR and low-frequency oscillation (LFO). A thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) is a commercially available FACTS device that was developed for damping the SSR and LFO. In this paper, 2 control methods for damping the SSR and LFO are added to the TCSC main controller in order to demonstrate that the SSR damping capability of the TCSC can be enhanced by proper modulation of the firing angle. The …

Feature-Based Fault Detection Of Industrial Gas Turbines Using Neural Networks, Abbas Rasaienia, Behzad Moshiri, Mohammadamin Moezzi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Gas turbine (GT) fault detection plays a vital role in the minimization of power plant operation costs associated with power plant overhaul time intervals. In other words, it is helpful in generating pre-alarms and paves the way for corrective actions in due time before incurring major equipment failures. Hence, finding an efficient fault detection technique that is applicable in the online operation of power plants involved with minor computations is an urgent need in the power generation industry. Such a method is studied in this paper for the V94.2 class of GTs. As the most leading stage for developing a …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study presents a novel hybrid Turkish text summarization system that combines structural and semantic features. The system uses 5 structural features, 1 of which is newly proposed and 3 are semantic features whose values are extracted from Turkish Wikipedia links. The features are combined using the weights calculated by 2 novel approaches. The first approach makes use of an analytical hierarchical process, which depends on a series of expert judgments based on pairwise comparisons of the features. The second approach makes use of the artificial bee colony algorithm for automatically determining the weights of the features. To confirm the …

Review Of Distinctive Phonetic Features And The Arabic Share In Related Modern Research, Yousef Alotaibi, Ali Meftah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Most research in the field of digital speech technology has traditionally been conducted in only a few languages, such as English, French, Spanish, or Chinese. Numerous studies using distinctive phonetic features (DPFs) with different techniques and algorithms have been carried out during the last 3 decades, mainly in English, Japanese, and other languages of industrialized countries. DPF elements are based on a technique used by linguists and digital speech and language experts to distinguish between different phones by considering the lowest level of actual features during phonation. These studies have investigated the best performances, outcomes, and theories, especially those regarding …

Teaching Elementary Aural Skills - How Current Brain Research May Help, Paula J. Telesco Jan 2013

Teaching Elementary Aural Skills - How Current Brain Research May Help, Paula J. Telesco

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Paula Telesco interweaves the current state of aural skills teaching with cognitive studies, shedding new light on how we approach teaching skills. "All music departments share at least one common goal: to cultivate the musicianship of all their students, enabling each to be a better musician than he or she was upon entering the program. In a general sense, that means increasing the literacy and fluency of all music students. It may, therefore, behoove us to revisit and reevaluate what most of us would probably agree is a standard Aural Skills curriculum to determine whether the model is still as …

Social Supports For Multilingual Students In The University Setting, Max Badesheim Jan 2013

Social Supports For Multilingual Students In The University Setting, Max Badesheim

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Research suggests that students’ social engagement, both on and off campus, plays a significant role in their academic performance. This research has been conducted in various settings including institutionally provided social programs (Browne, M. N., & Minnick, K. J., 2005), student organizations (Nunan, D., 1992), as well as interpersonal relationships (Cumming, A. H., 2006). These social supports are especially essential for multilingual students who potentially lack some of the interconnecting support networks of students raised in the United States in English speaking households. Despite the established connection between social engagement and academic performance, social programs on campus are often under-utilized. …

Alternative Service Delivery Models For Students With Learning Disabilities, Evelyn S. Johnson, Carrie Semmelroth

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

More than 40 years of intervention research describes effective interventions for increasing the academic performance of students with learning disabilities. However, the performance and outcomes for students with learning disabilities remain discouraging, especially in light of the increasing cost to provide special education services. Between 60 – 70 percent of students with learning disabilities are unable to meet grade level performance standards in the basic academic areas of reading, writing and mathematics. The disconnect between research and practice suggests a need for rethinking special education service delivery. This paper reports the results of a program evaluation of a not-for-profit center …

Personalizing Aac For People With Aphasia: The Role Of Text And Pictures, Aimee R. Dietz, Kristy S.E. Weissling, Julie Griffith, Miechelle L. Mckelvey Jan 2013

Personalizing Aac For People With Aphasia: The Role Of Text And Pictures, Aimee R. Dietz, Kristy S.E. Weissling, Julie Griffith, Miechelle L. Mckelvey

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Over time, and with intensive instruction, people with aphasia (PWAs) can learn to use grid-based, categorically organized, high-technology AAC layouts during structured tasks (e.g., Hough & Johnson, 2009). In an effort to reduce the training intensity required to teach PWAs to use AAC; researchers developed visual scene displays (VSDs), designed to complement the residual cognitive and linguistic abilities of PWAs by tapping their intact episodic memory. VSD interfaces incorporate personally relevant (PR) photos, text, and speech output (Dietz, McKelvey, & Beukelman, 2006; Weissling & Beukelman, 2006). VSDs appear to facilitate improved communication success (e.g., McKelvey, Dietz, Hux, Weissling, & Beukelman, …

Review Of Michel & Nosch, Eds., Textile Terminologies In The Ancient Near East And Mediterranean From The Third To The First Millennia Bc., Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Textile production comprised the major manufacturing industry of the ancient Near East and eastern Mediterranean, yet it has received relatively little scholarly attention. As garments and furnishings, textiles may provide warmth and utility, but they are also indicators of status, objects of trade and tribute, products of technology, and economic generators. The role of textiles is both pervasive and complex, yielding rich and specific vocabularies that do not easily transcend time and space for contemporary understanding. This brilliant volume offers a compilation of twenty-two papers that result from an exciting collaboration between the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre for Textile …

Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr Jan 2013

Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr

Publications and Research

The accessibility of Lange’s text might mitigate against recognizing its importance. Lange’s simple sentence structure and direct communicative mode convey a presently overlooked logical moral assertion: the impending Singularity is not a male-dominated patriarchal domain. The Singularity, in other words, should not be construed in a manner which excludes women and feminism. This assertion is patently obvious. But, nonetheless, it is often ignored. Before I read Lange’s novella as a description of the Singularity which feminists can embrace, I include the following background information: 1) a discussion about why the discourse relating to the Singularity needs to be expanded and …

Reconsidering The Theoretical/Practical Divide: The Philosophy Of Nishida Kitarō, Lockland Vance Tyler Jan 2013

Reconsidering The Theoretical/Practical Divide: The Philosophy Of Nishida Kitarō, Lockland Vance Tyler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the years professional philosophy has undergone a number of significant changes. One of these changes corresponds to an increased emphasis on objectivity among philosophers. In light of new discoveries in logic and science, contemporary analytic philosophy seeks to establish the most objective methods and answers possible to advance philosophical progress in an unambiguous way. By doing so, we are able to more precisely analyze concepts, but the increased emphasis on precision has also been accompanied by some negative consequences. These consequences, unfortunately, are much larger and problematic than many may even realize. What we have eventually arrived in at …

The Effect Of Direct And Indirect Corrective Feedback Taking A Sociocultural Approach, Brenda Aromu Wawire Jan 2013

The Effect Of Direct And Indirect Corrective Feedback Taking A Sociocultural Approach, Brenda Aromu Wawire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Debate on the effectiveness and usefulness of written corrective feedback has centered on Truscott's 1996 article that placed a strong case against grammar correction as ineffective and harmful and therefore should be abandoned. A growing body of research has proved the value of judicious and purposeful error correction and has also put forward guidelines to guide such pedagogy. The second language acquisition process is deemed to be a very complex and slow process. Therefore it is paramount that corrective feedback be structured according to an individual learner's linguistic ability. Contributing to this research base, this study investigated whether there is …

Nationalism In Ireland: Archaeology, Myth, And Identity, Elaine Kirby Tolbert Jan 2013

Nationalism In Ireland: Archaeology, Myth, And Identity, Elaine Kirby Tolbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A nation is defined by a collective identity that is constructed in part through interpretation of past places and events. In this paper, I examine the links between nationalism and archaeology and how the past is used in the construction of contemporary Irish national identity. In Ireland, national identity has been influenced by interpretation of ancient monuments, often combining the mythology and the archaeology of these sites. I focus on three celebrated monumental sites at Navan Fort, Newgrange, and the Hill of Tara, all of which play prominent roles in Irish mythology and have been extensively examined through archaeology. I …
