Mission Aware Energy Saving Strategies For Army Ground Vehicles, Macam Dattathreya
Mission Aware Energy Saving Strategies For Army Ground Vehicles, Macam Dattathreya
Wayne State University Dissertations
Fuel energy is a basic necessity for this planet and the modern technology to perform many activities on earth. On the other hand, quadrupled automotive vehicle usage by the commercial industry and military has increased fuel consumption. Military readiness of Army ground vehicles is very important for a country to protect its people and resources. Fuel energy is a major requirement for Army ground vehicles. According to a report, a department of defense has spent nearly $13.6 billion on fuel and electricity to conduct ground missions. On the contrary, energy availability on this plant is slowly decreasing. Therefore, saving energy …
Deleuzian Mappings With Rafael Chirbe's "Little Machines", Daniel O'Dunne
Deleuzian Mappings With Rafael Chirbe's "Little Machines", Daniel O'Dunne
Wayne State University Dissertations
Spanish (Valencian) novelist Rafael Chirbes, and how this narrative production coincides with several of the philosophical concepts of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari included in works that they co-authored or in those written individually by Deleuze. The novels considered in this study are La larga marcha (1996), La caída de Madrid (2000) and Los viejos amigos (2003). The chronological period depicted in the trilogy is restricted for the most part to the years immediately preceding the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and extending until the beginning of the Twenty-First Century. Portraying the intensive time of aion, or time that escapes chronological …
Queering Ghana: Sexuality, Community, And The Struggle For Cultural Belonging In An African Nation, William D. Banks
Queering Ghana: Sexuality, Community, And The Struggle For Cultural Belonging In An African Nation, William D. Banks
Wayne State University Dissertations
In this dissertation, I provide an analysis of the social practices of a queer community in southern Ghana known as Saso people. Drawing on in-depth interviews with indigenous religious priests, I focus specifically on practices of leadership and kinship, sexual initiation, and engagement and marriage. I interpret these practices as a set of strategies deployed by Saso people to articulate a sense of cultural belonging in contemporary Ghana. In so doing, I make a contribution to the scant ethnographic literature on queer African communities, while demonstrating the value of priests as research subjects. My ethnographic fieldwork, as well as that …
Impacts Of Oral Language Proficiency, Television And Internet On Acculturation Of Taiwanese College Students, Huang Yu Lin
Impacts Of Oral Language Proficiency, Television And Internet On Acculturation Of Taiwanese College Students, Huang Yu Lin
Wayne State University Dissertations
The majority of recent cross-cultural research with regard to the media's impact on acculturation has been aimed at Chinese immigrants' acculturation by the media in the United States with relatively little attention to Taiwanese college students' state of change in acculturation by various media sources while acquiring English as a second language. There are significant numbers of studies on assimilation to the host culture by both the ethnic and host media; however, there is a paucity of literature based on the one-dimensional media impact on a particular demographic group which can be easily traced to various types of media affecting …
Enhancing Memory Access For Less-Skilled Readers, Emily R. Smith
Enhancing Memory Access For Less-Skilled Readers, Emily R. Smith
Doctoral Dissertations
Ericcson and Kintch (1995) suggested that less-skilled readers often have an impoverished representation of text. The results of five experiments demonstrated that the addition of causality enhanced the text representation of less-skilled readers. Experiments 1-3 showed that the addition of causal information enhanced less-skilled readers' ability to detect global inconsistencies. Experiments 4 and 5 showed that the addition of causal information to updating information resulted in less-skilled readers updating to the same extent as skilled readers.
Dialects, Orthography And Society, John M. Clifton
Dialects, Orthography And Society, John M. Clifton
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
While there is broad consensus that both linguistic and non-linguistic factors play a role in orthography, there is disagreement as to the relative weight played by the two sets of factors. In this paper, I present case studies from four languages, two from Papua New Guinea and two from Bangladesh, in which orthography interacts with dialectal differences. In two of the studies, orthography is used to show the unity of the communities, while in the other two it is used to establish separate identities. This interaction of orthography and group identity follows naturally from the claim that orthography is primarily …
The Limits Of New Originalism, Joel Alicea
The Limits Of New Originalism, Joel Alicea
Scholarly Articles
We argue that New Originalism, which has emerged as the dominant theory of originalism, has a significant methodological limitation for anyone who takes historical research seriously. That limitation arises where historical sources indicate different possible original meanings, which can occur because of New Originalism's focus on the meaning of the text for a hypothetical, reasonable person at the time of ratification. We describe the first instance of this problem, which occurred in Hylton v. United States (1796). Hylton involved the constitutionality of an excise tax, and we use that case to provide a real example of the impossibility of a …

The Development And Validation Of The Family Experiences With Autism Spectrum Disorders (Feasd) Scale, Adam Moore
The Development And Validation Of The Family Experiences With Autism Spectrum Disorders (Feasd) Scale, Adam Moore
Open Access Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) impacts 1 in 50 children in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). This striking increase in the number of children with ASD affects families in a variety of ways.
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale that measured the experiences of families of children with ASD in schools, health care settings, and in their families/communities. Family-centered care (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2003) principles were used to create the items in the scale. In addition to determining the psychometric properties of the scale, the second purpose of …

Re-Envisioning The Honors Senior Project: Experience As Research, Kevin Gustafson, Zachary Cureton
Honors in Practice Online Archive
One of the NCHC Basic Characteristics of a Fully Developed Honors Program is that it creates opportunities for undergraduate research, opportunities that frequently culminate in a senior thesis or capstone project (Spurrier 200–201). The senior research project typically distinguishes honors students from their non-honors counterparts in a significant way. The emphasis on undergraduate research may also distinguish an honors program or college (“or college” will be understood throughout this essay) within the university, where honors often becomes a de facto center for undergraduate research. Increasing opportunities for undergraduate research thus not only benefits honors students—by giving them a greater range …
Honors Students As Philosophers And Detectives, Kaitlin A. Briggs
Honors Students As Philosophers And Detectives, Kaitlin A. Briggs
Honors in Practice Online Archive
An unlikely meeting of minds might be the minor English philosopher and member of the Bloomsbury Group G. E. Moore and the Swedish mystery writer Henning Mankell’s detective Kurt Wallander, yet both—one real and the other fictional, one historical and one contemporary—are characterized by an unrelenting inquisitiveness integral to their personalities and professions. A member of the notorious but secretive Apostles while at Cambridge along with his friends Leonard Woolf, Lytton Strachey, E. M. Forster, Clive Bell, and John Maynard Keynes, Moore established his intellectual reputation by always asking “What exactly do you mean?” (Cohen). In order to probe more …

Honors in Practice Online Archive
Chronologically presented courses that span centuries often catalyze unwitting buy-in to unexamined narratives of progress. While useful for helping students make connections between the human past, present, and future, Great Books honors curricula like the one used at the University of Maine have a few inherent problems that require careful navigation. Both students and faculty tend to discard—or misinterpret—the values, cultural products, and successes of older cultures in favor of newer ones. Instead of valuing the uniqueness of a foreign place and time, we often emphasize transformation for the sake of narrative coherence in a program that needs focus to …
Review Of Nikkei In The Interior West: Japanese Immigrants And Community Building, 1882–1945 By Eric Walz, Jonathan Dresner
Review Of Nikkei In The Interior West: Japanese Immigrants And Community Building, 1882–1945 By Eric Walz, Jonathan Dresner
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Studies of Japanese immigration into North America generally focus on the larger Hawaiian and West Coast populations, but there is a small body of work on other areas, including New York, Texas, and the Canadian heartland. The core of Eric Walz’s book is a pioneering sourcerich examination of Japanese immigration and settlement experiences in the American West, including Nebraska, but excluding the coastal states and Midwest. As long as its focus stays on these sparsely distributed migrants, the book is an interesting addition to the literature, though not a final word. The decision to include Japanese historical and cultural context …
Ethnography Of One Family On A 1939 Blackfeet Indian Reservation Farm Project In Montana, Donald D. Pepion
Ethnography Of One Family On A 1939 Blackfeet Indian Reservation Farm Project In Montana, Donald D. Pepion
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The General Allotment Act of 1887, or the Dawes Act as it came to be known, authorized the president of the United States to divide American Indian lands into private sections to be allotted to individual members of the tribes. The act was designed to move Indians from tribal ways into "mainstream" U.S. American life. According to Scherer,
the Dawes Act became one of the most far-reaching and, for Native Americans, disastrous pieces of Indian legislation ever passed by Congress. By the time the allotment process was stopped in 1934, the amount of Indianheld land in the United States …
Review Of Prairie Silence: A Memoir By Melanie Hoffert., Kathleen Dixon
Review Of Prairie Silence: A Memoir By Melanie Hoffert., Kathleen Dixon
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Melanie Hoffert’s memoir on growing up gay in rural North Dakota is refreshingly devoid of the clichéd finger-wagging that marks much discourse on the subject. The denizens of Dakota are not depicted as abject bigots or people in need of diversity training. Hoffert’s reluctance to “come out” to family, friends, and former neighbors of her small town is something she ultimately pins on herself, or on something she calls “prairie silence.” At times this phenomenon seems salutary, part of the “natural” relation of people to profoundly open spaces; at times “prairie silence” seems to be an affliction depriving people of …

Factors Influencing Honors College Recruitment, Persistence, And Satisfaction At An Upper-Midwest Land Grant University, Timothy J. Nichols, Kuo-Liang Matt Chang
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Student success and the “completion agenda” are important issues in higher education today (Complete College America). For honors programs and colleges, understanding and advancing these issues requires data-driven approaches tailored to the unique honors student population and broader institutional contexts. Honors faculty and administrators hoping to succeed in their recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts need an accurate understanding of why students decide to enroll and persist as well as their satisfaction with honors experiences. Our research data provide particular insight into the student experience at South Dakota State University (SDSU) but may also be instructive to a broader audience of …

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
One of the most enduring and controversial figures in the field of history is John E. Boswell. His work on homosexuality and the history of the Christian Church was published at a key time during the Stonewall Riots in the late 1960s and the removal of homosexuality from the list of diagnostic mental disorders in the mid 1970s. This social upheaval created a dynamic that not only influenced Boswell personally but contributed to the vehement reaction to his book Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality: Gay People in Western Europe from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Fourteenth Century. …

Making Something Out Of Nothing: Asexuality And Narrative, Elizabeth Hanna Hanson
Making Something Out Of Nothing: Asexuality And Narrative, Elizabeth Hanna Hanson
Dissertations
The existence of asexuality, the non-experience of sexual attraction, forces us to reconsider a great deal of received wisdom about sexuality, subjectivity, and narrative, which are all closely bound together in modernity. These discourses, whose interactions we find in distilled form in the novel, have both necessitated and facilitated asexual erasure. I read asexuality as a threatening absence or stasis jamming the economy of desire that operates between subjects or propels a narrative forward. Grounding my study of asexuality in narrative theory and queer theory, I explore narratives that confront asexuality at the level of content--its manifestations, misrecognitions, and repudiations …
The Politics Of Statutory Interpretation, Margaret H. Lemos
The Politics Of Statutory Interpretation, Margaret H. Lemos
Faculty Scholarship
In a new book, Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts, Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan Garner describe and defend the textualist methodology for which Justice Scalia is famous. For Scalia and Garner, the normative appeal of textualism lies in its objectivity: by focusing on text, context, and canons of construction, textualism offers protection against ideological judging—a way to separate law from politics. Yet, as Scalia and Garner well know, textualism is widely regarded as a politically conservative methodology. The charge of conservative bias is more common than it is concrete, but it reflects the notion that textualism narrows the …
Remix Perspective: Transdisciplinary Insights For The Art Of Writing, Marianne Rogoff
Remix Perspective: Transdisciplinary Insights For The Art Of Writing, Marianne Rogoff
English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship
How do creative writers transform the complexity of life into literature? Remix Perspectives presents a bricolage synthesis of transdisciplinary insights for workshop leaders and creative writers, appropriated from selected artistic and literary voices from more or less the last hundred years. Seminal concepts from arts such as painting, poetry, dance, music, and photography are gathered here as they inform the arts of literary fiction and creative nonfiction. Thinkers from philosophy, psychology, literary theory, complexity, and metaphysics address the inner and outer realms where the work of the writer is generated and goes forth.
Review Of Time’S Shadow: Remembering A Family Farm In Kansas By Arnold J. Bauer, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg
Review Of Time’S Shadow: Remembering A Family Farm In Kansas By Arnold J. Bauer, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In Time’s Shadow, Arnold J. Bauer has chronicled his family’s small farm in Goshen Township, Clay County, Kansas. Like many farm memoirs chronicling the middle years of the twentieth century, its value and interest lie in its capturing a place and way of life far removed from our experiences in the twenty-first century.
Bauer effectively highlights the issue of distance and its significance to his childhood. His family’s farm in eastern Kansas was fifteen miles from Clay Center, a distance that seems laughably small from today’s perspective. In the years before World War II, however, that was a long …
Review Of Life’S Journey—Zuya: Oral Teachings From Rosebud By Albert White Hat Sr. Compiled And Edited By John Cunningham, Tink Tinker
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Old-style, mainline anthropologists will probably not like this book. It is certainly not old-style anthropology. It is much, much more important than that. That White Hat fails to cite any of the pertinent literature on Lakotas is much beside the point; indeed, he indicates clearly that he does not much care for all of that literature as a means for finding meaning in Lakota life. White Hat is Siċangú Lakota and writes from deep within the Siċangú Lakota traditional knowledge. That is the importance of this book. Others have also written from within the Lakota world, even interpreters or so-called …

Adapting School-Based Substance Use Prevention Curriculum Through Cultural Grounding: A Review And Exemplar Of Adaptation Processes For Rural Schools, Margaret Colby, Michael L. Hecht, Michelle Miller-Day, Janice L. Krieger, Amy K. Syvertsen, John W. Graham, Jonathan Pettigrew
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
A central challenge facing twenty-first century community-based researchers and prevention scientists is curriculum adaptation processes. While early prevention efforts sought to develop effective programs, taking programs to scale implies that they will be adapted, especially as programs are implemented with populations other than those with whom they were developed or tested. The principle of cultural grounding, which argues that health message adaptation should be informed by knowledge of the target population and by cultural insiders, provides a theoretical rational for cultural regrounding and presents an illustrative case of methods used to reground the keepin’ it REAL substance use prevention curriculum …
