Representation And Appropriation In Guamán Poma De Ayala, Julio Ortega, Philip Debenshire Dec 2013

Representation And Appropriation In Guamán Poma De Ayala, Julio Ortega, Philip Debenshire

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

By discussing the cultural role of iconography, this article explores the likely source of representations in Felipe Guaman Pomade Ayala's The First New Chronicle and Good Government. His process of appropriation serves as a model of the new Andean cultural production by showcasing how emblematic allegories have been used in Latin America to illustrate Colonial manuscripts as well as national emblems and public art.

La Francophonie Dans Un Contexte Éducatif : Le Nouveau Monde À Découvrir, Kyle D. Christopher

The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

The Francophone culture of French overseas departments is largely overlooked in the American university system. By examining these regions further, we will discover that they have much to offer, not only from a linguistic perspective, but also from interdisciplinary perspectives ranging from biology to politics. Moreover, the geographical proximity of several of these regions to the United States, and especially to the city of Atlanta, provides a unique opportunity for university-level students to examine the French culture of these departments and enlarge our understanding of Francophone culture. Several prominent Francophone scholars that are of Antillean origin provide a unique perspective …

Things That Happen: Husserl's Theory Of Judgment And The Problem Of Events, Andres Colapinto Dec 2013

Things That Happen: Husserl's Theory Of Judgment And The Problem Of Events, Andres Colapinto

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation develops a phenomenology of events through an application, and critical re-evaluation, of key concepts in the philosophy of Edmund Husserl. I argue that non-phenomenological approaches to events fail to account for the availability of `things that happen' as intentional objects. How are they intelligible as objects of thought and experience? Why is their manner of being `things' one in which they happen (rather than exist, for example)? I argue, moreover, that we can best address these questions through a phenomenological analysis of propositions that express what happens--propositions like `My tooth fell out'--rather than nominal expressions like `earthquake' and …

Declarative And Yes/No Question Intonation In Montevideo Spanish, Deborah Silva De Araujo Dec 2013

Declarative And Yes/No Question Intonation In Montevideo Spanish, Deborah Silva De Araujo

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study offers for the first time empirical and theoretical data on the intonation of the Spanish variety spoken in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. It proposes a phonological analysis of broad focus declarative and yes/no question utterances of simple, coordinated, and subordinated sentences recorded during fieldwork in Montevideo. The analysis relies on the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) model (Pierrehumbert 1980) and the Sp_ToBI transcription system (Beckman et al 2002, Estebas-Vilaplana and Prieto 2009). The analysis of the F0 track shows that coordinated and subordinated sentences of both declarative and yes/no question utterances were parsed into utterance-medial IP (aligned with the …

Metaphors Of Body And Home: A Study Of The Anatomical Illustration In 'Ma'aseh Tuviyah', Yael Levy Morantz Dec 2013

Metaphors Of Body And Home: A Study Of The Anatomical Illustration In 'Ma'aseh Tuviyah', Yael Levy Morantz

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

An illustration that compares a dissected body to a house is the subject of this thesis. The illustration opens the pathology chapter of Ma'aseh Tuviyah, a Hebrew encyclopedic manuscript, written by the Jewish physician Tobias Cohen at the turn of the eighteenth century. The body and the house are mirror images that strengthen the metaphor BODY IS HOUSE, a metaphor thoroughly developed in the text that follows the illustration. Aided by architectural terms, this metaphor was designed to assist the medical student in understanding the ailments of the body. This thesis argues that the illustration, as an adjunct to the …

La Condition Postmétisse, Célestin Monga Dec 2013

La Condition Postmétisse, Célestin Monga

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Patrick Chamoiseau’s thought has evolved considerably over the past twenty-five years. Whether it inscribes itself in the registers of utopia or counter-utopia, it has moved away from the linguistics issues of creoleness to acquire a humanistic thickness. It now advocates the advent of a global identity that could be viewed as “post-mestizo”. This essay analyzes its invocation of the Tout-Monde and its faith in a universal poetics of relation. It also assesses the empirical basis for his views in a world where nihilism appears to be the only credible virtue.

Predictive Admission Criteria In Graduate Programs In Speech-Language Pathology, Mary Lloyd Moore Dec 2013

Predictive Admission Criteria In Graduate Programs In Speech-Language Pathology, Mary Lloyd Moore

Dissertations

Speech-language pathology is a profession for which there is increasing demand as well as being one of the most desirable career paths in the United States. Graduation of qualified persons who can pass the Praxis exam is an essential outcome of all graduate programs in speech-language pathology. If predictors of competence could be identified before admission, graduate programs would be better able to select students who would maximize the expenditure of materials, energy, and expertise, thereby decreasing the potential failure for both students and universities. Therefore, this research addresses the extent to which selected variables may serve to predict success …

Psychometric Differences In Motor Functioning, Ashley Mcwaters Dec 2013

Psychometric Differences In Motor Functioning, Ashley Mcwaters

HIM 1990-2015

Clinical experience has shown that patients performing the Grooved Pegboard Test have difficulty maintaining the manualized right-to-left placement strategy with their left hand. This study sought to investigate possible differences in placement time on the Grooved Pegboard task between participants using the standardized left hand approach and a reversed manualized left hand placement strategy (i.e., left-to-right). The participants included 63 male and female undergraduate volunteers between the ages of 18 and 25 years. All participants had no history of neurologic disease/trauma, or conditions that would affect motor functioning of the right and left upper extremities. Data were analyzed using a …

Genetics And The Archaeology Of Ancient Israel, Aaron J. Brody, Roy J. King Dec 2013

Genetics And The Archaeology Of Ancient Israel, Aaron J. Brody, Roy J. King

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

This paper is a call for DNA testing on ancient skeletal materials from the southern Levant to begin to database genetic information of the inhabitants of this crossroads region. Archaeologists and biblical historians view the earliest presence in the region of a group that called itself Israel in the Iron I period, traditionally dated to ca. 1200-1000 BCE. These were in villages in the varied hill countries of the region, contemporary with urban settlements in the coastal plains, inland valleys, and central Hill Country attributed to varied indigenous groups collectively called Canaanite. The remnants of Egyptian imperial presence in the …

Population Genetic Structure In A Social Landscape: Barley In A Traditional Ethiopian Agricultural System, Leah H. Samberg, Lila Fishman, Fred W. Allendorf Dec 2013

Population Genetic Structure In A Social Landscape: Barley In A Traditional Ethiopian Agricultural System, Leah H. Samberg, Lila Fishman, Fred W. Allendorf

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Conservation strategies are increasingly driven by our understanding of the processes and patterns of gene flow across complex landscapes. The expansion of population genetic approaches into traditional agricultural systems requires understanding how social factors contribute to that landscape, and thus to gene flow. This study incorporates extensive farmer interviews and population genetic analysis of barley landraces (Hordeum vulgare) to build a holistic picture of farmer-mediated geneflow in an ancient, traditional agricultural system in the highlands of Ethiopia. We analyze barley samples at 14 microsatellite loci across sites at varying elevations and locations across a contiguous mountain range, and across farmer-identified …

Assessment Measures For Specific Language Impairment In Brazil: A Systematic Review, Alberto Filgueiras, Lisa M.D. Archibald, J. Landeira-Fernandez Dec 2013

Assessment Measures For Specific Language Impairment In Brazil: A Systematic Review, Alberto Filgueiras, Lisa M.D. Archibald, J. Landeira-Fernandez

Paediatrics Publications

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is defined as an unexpected failure in linguistic abilities during a child's early years of development. Children with SLI do not present significant impairment in nonverbal intellectual outcomes and do not lack normal environmental exposure to language. Brazilian and worldwide researchers have sought to understand the cultural implications of SLI in the Brazilian Portuguese language. Standardized and validated measures must be used in empirical studies. The present study systematically reviewed the instruments used to assess linguistic abilities in quantitative SLI research in Brazil. Three databases were chosen: Medline, SciELO, and Google Scholar. From a total of …

The Effect Of Public Debt On Growth In Multiple Regimes, Andros Kourtellos, Thanasis Stengos, Chih Ming Tan Dec 2013

The Effect Of Public Debt On Growth In Multiple Regimes, Andros Kourtellos, Thanasis Stengos, Chih Ming Tan

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

We employ a structural threshold regression methodology to investigate the heterogeneous effects of debt on growth using public debt as a threshold variable as well as several other plausible variables. Our methodology allows us to address parameter heterogeneity that characterizes cross-country growth data and at the same time account for endogeneity. We find strong evidence for threshold effects based on democracy, which implies that higher public debt results in lower growth for countries in the Low-Democracy regime. Our results are consistent with the presence of parameter heterogeneity in the cross-country growth process due to fundamental determinants of economic growth proposed …

The purpose of this dissertation was to add to the limited available research concerning the effectiveness of supplemental reading programs such as Reading First and Direct Instruction on reading achievement for students in elementary and middle grades. Particularly, in the first and third hypotheses, the independent variables were reading program (Direct Instruction versus Reading First) and ethnicity (Hispanic versus Non- Hispanic) on reading comprehension for third and eighth grade students. In the second and fourth hypotheses, the independent variables were reading program (Direct Instruction versus Reading First) and gender (male versus female) on reading comprehension for third and eighth students. …

Dialect Or A New Language: A Possible Explanation Of The 70% Mutual Intelligibility Threshold, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2013

Dialect Or A New Language: A Possible Explanation Of The 70% Mutual Intelligibility Threshold, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In most cases, linguists have a consensus on when people from different regions speak two different dialects of the same language (and can, thus, understand each other reasonably well) or two different languages (in this case, their mutual intelligibility is limited). In most cases, this intuitive consensus corresponds to a 70% mutual intelligibility threshold: if at least 70% of the words from one region are understandable to people from another region, then these are two dialects, otherwise these are two different languages. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this 70% threshold.

Language, Science, Society, And The Line Between Human And Animal In Swift's Gulliver's Travels And Wells's The Island Of Doctor Moreau, Adam Schultheiss Dec 2013

Language, Science, Society, And The Line Between Human And Animal In Swift's Gulliver's Travels And Wells's The Island Of Doctor Moreau, Adam Schultheiss

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis examines line between human and non-human animals in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels and H.G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau. Both Gulliver's Travels and The Island of Doctor Moreau examine this separation through the prism of language, societal views of animality, and biology. Looking back at the history surrounding the idea that man is separate from, and superior to, animals, one finds that it can be traced back in western tradition to the Bible, and is so ingrained in our language that it is difficult for narrators such as Lemuel Gulliver and Edward Prendick to recount their experiences …

Bilingual Cognitive Control And Perspective-Monitoring In Dialogue, Karla Maria Batres Dec 2013

Bilingual Cognitive Control And Perspective-Monitoring In Dialogue, Karla Maria Batres

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The bilingual experience is fundamentally different from the monolingual experience. This is due in part to the bilingual's need to be ready to process multiple languages, while at the same time, needing to choose which language to speak while keeping in mind which language(s) the addressee understands. As a result of these demands on bilingual language comprehension and production, some have claimed that bilinguals have enhanced cognitive control when compared to monolinguals (e.g. | Bialystok, 2009). Bilinguals may have more experience in adapting to a partner's perspective (as advantage in perspective-taking has been established for bilingual children, e.g. | Goetz, …

The results indicated that all three participants met their individual goals on the AIMSweb R-CBM progress monitoring fourth grade probes. In addition, all three students’ demonstrated exceptional growth …

The Impact Of Kindergarten Teachers' Theoretical Orientation To Reading On Curricular Planning And Classroom Practice In Literacy., Jacquelyn J. Singleton Dec 2013

The Impact Of Kindergarten Teachers' Theoretical Orientation To Reading On Curricular Planning And Classroom Practice In Literacy., Jacquelyn J. Singleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using case-study analysis, this dissertation is a qualitative examination of kindergarten teachers’ beliefs, theoretical orientation toward reading, and outside pressures and their impact upon the educators’ classroom practice for literacy instruction. Selected for the study based upon their scores on DeFord’s Theoretical Orientation to Reading Profile (1985), eight teachers participated in two in-depth interviews and two separate 30-minute classroom observations for which they provided lesson plans. They also completed the Reading Interest-A-Lyzer (Reis, 2005). The results were coded with a coding scheme developed around the Theoretical Orientation to Reading Profile and Vygotsky’s Activity Theory—the theoretical framework for the current study. …
