Design Values, Designing Values And Valuing Designing: Three Scenarios For Values In Design Education, Gabriel Hernández Jul 2013

Design Values, Designing Values And Valuing Designing: Three Scenarios For Values In Design Education, Gabriel Hernández

Learn X Design Conference Series

This paper discusses the importance and role of values in design education. As design scenarios constantly change, so do values pertaining to design. Design education should be ahead of those changes, however the theoretical development of design has not given values the same importance as other issues. This paper presents a theoretical framework to help understand the role of values in current design learning. It provides a general comprehension of how values affect both designing and design outcomes, thus aiming to offer arguments that strengthen the awareness and importance of ethical and moral issues in design education.

Learning To Adapt: Online Social Science Instruction In Higher Education, Patrick Steven Smith Jul 2013

Learning To Adapt: Online Social Science Instruction In Higher Education, Patrick Steven Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Online learning is a rapidly growing phenomenon in post-secondary education. Institutions of higher learning have embraced online learning for its perceived merits, but without the consideration of how instructors deal with this different learning medium. Little is known of the extent to which different disciplines are suited to the online medium; this is pertinent to disciplines that rely on spontaneous in-person discussion. Furthermore, as colleges continue to invest heavily in online learning, instructors who only possess face-to-face teaching experience may begin teaching online. This poses a pedagogical challenge for instructors who are unfamiliar with the medium. This qualitative, in-depth interview …

Summer Of Shrew, Part 2: Tamed? Really?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner Jul 2013

Summer Of Shrew, Part 2: Tamed? Really?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner

Faculty Publications

In the second of a four-part series on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner argues that Shakespeare’s play raises challenging questions about the way we define gender roles, and the answers aren’t as obvious as they might seem.

Evaluation: Measurements Of Differences Between Semantic Spaces, Xudong Huang Jul 2013

Evaluation: Measurements Of Differences Between Semantic Spaces, Xudong Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The existing method to measure differences among semantic spaces is costly. The current study evaluates a low-cost method. Specifically, the current study uses three measurements of induced semantic structures (ISS) to measure the differences between vector-based semantic spaces. An ISS of a target word is that word's ordered nearest neighbors. Our hypothesis, which was confirmed, is that the three measurements have the ability to measure the differences between spaces. In addition, the number of nearest neighbors used by measurements has an effect on the ability. Evaluation was conducted on five Touchstone Applied Science Associates (TASA) spaces. The measured differences between …

The Unheard Needs Of The Deaf In Ecuador, Natalie Delgado Jul 2013

The Unheard Needs Of The Deaf In Ecuador, Natalie Delgado

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, at least 90% of deaf people in developing countries are not receiving any education (Hauland & Allen, 2011). Very little research has been done on deaf education in Ecuador specifically. Although some deaf children in Ecuador are receiving an education, their education is impeded by insufficient communication access, lack of government awareness about best practices, and a shortage of teachers with deaf-specific work experience and training. This project provides an analysis of Ecuador’s disabled citizens in general and deaf and hard-of-hearing people in particular, as a context for a focus on education …

Scientifically Based Reading Research Strategies In The Preschool Classroom: An Investigation Into Quality Early Childhood Reading Practices And Literacy Acquisition In One Northern Michigan Early Reading First Program, Yvonne Donohoe Mccool Jul 2013

Scientifically Based Reading Research Strategies In The Preschool Classroom: An Investigation Into Quality Early Childhood Reading Practices And Literacy Acquisition In One Northern Michigan Early Reading First Program, Yvonne Donohoe Mccool

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A growing body of research has emerged to support the concept of providing early childhood education as a quality investment for our children, unlocking early potential and creating lasting impacts related to school success and beyond. Several landmark studies indicated that a quality education targeted at our youngest learners has the ability to yield impressive returns academically, economically, and socially. Early childhood education is credited with reducing costs associated with educational remediation, retention, and special education services. More important, early childhood education is associated with the prevention of early learning difficulties and overall improved education outcomes.

On the foundation of …

Framing Saint Johanna: Media Coverage Of Iceland’S First Female (And The World’S First Openly Gay) Prime Minister, Dean E. Mundy Jul 2013

Framing Saint Johanna: Media Coverage Of Iceland’S First Female (And The World’S First Openly Gay) Prime Minister, Dean E. Mundy

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

This study investigates how international media covered a “first” event of its kind: the election of Iceland’s first female, and the world’s first openly gay, prime minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir. A qualitative content analysis examines if media framed Iceland’s new leader as a leader, a specifically female leader, or a specifically gay female leader. The findings provide insight regarding how media frame international female politicians in the 21st century, and the corresponding opportunities and challenges.

Analysis Of Humira, Electro-Acupuncture, And Pulsatile Dry Cupping On Reducing Joint Inflammation In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Natalie Noll Jul 2013

Analysis Of Humira, Electro-Acupuncture, And Pulsatile Dry Cupping On Reducing Joint Inflammation In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Natalie Noll

UROP Posters

Humira, an anti-TNF drug aimed at decreasing inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, can cause skin diseases from a rash to skin cancer. Humira works by blocking the chemical receptor RANKL, which therefore halts the production of osteoclasts, which attack and eat bone and cartilage, causing inflammation in arthritis patient’s joints. By analyzing Humira’s effect on the human body, it can be compared against other treatments such as electro-acupuncture and pulsatile dry cupping to see if these alternative treatments can decrease inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients through blocking RANKL, and if they are safer methods for carrying out this treatment. Under …

Don’T Be A Drag, Just Be A Queen! Assessing The Popularity Of Drag Queens As Opposed To Levels Of Anti-Transgender Prejudice In Modern American Society, Neha Jadhav Jul 2013

Don’T Be A Drag, Just Be A Queen! Assessing The Popularity Of Drag Queens As Opposed To Levels Of Anti-Transgender Prejudice In Modern American Society, Neha Jadhav

UROP Posters

Over the past few decades, drag queen shows have become a popular sensation among men and women, homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. On the other hand, transgender individuals are confronted with more prejudice than gays, lesbians, or bisexuals are. What about drag queens sets them apart from the stigma directed toward transgenders? For this study, I attended a drag brunch in a gay bar and observed how each performance compelled audience members to question perceptions of gender and sexuality. In addition, I analyzed several scholarly journal articles for research on the practices of drag queens during their performances and their appeal, …

Mythcon 44 - Green And Growing: The Land And Its Inhabitants In Fantasy, The Mythopoeic Society Jul 2013

Mythcon 44 - Green And Growing: The Land And Its Inhabitants In Fantasy, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

How does mythopoeic literature address the relationship between the land and its inhabitants, between the wild and the cultivated? What are their respective moral values, their dangers, and delights? Tangled forests, majestic trees, the ordered fields, the carefully tended gardens; or untamed, wild beauty: each offers a different kind of bounty to those who would live off the land. What role do advocates and protectors of the land play in fantasy literature, particularly as personified in characters such as Yavanna, Radagast, Sam Gamgee, and, of course, Tom Bombadil?

Involving The Parents Of English Language Learners In A Rural Area: Focus On The Dynamics Of Teacher-Parent Interactions, Jenna M. Shim Jul 2013

Involving The Parents Of English Language Learners In A Rural Area: Focus On The Dynamics Of Teacher-Parent Interactions, Jenna M. Shim

The Rural Educator

In this study, the author suggests that the current ELL parental involvement model often overlooks the structural aspects and power asymmetry of parent-teacher relationships that can hinder productive collaboration. In doing so, the author uses postcolonial theory as a conceptual lens to investigate the dynamics of ELL parent-teacher interactions from rural ELL parent perspectives by looking at those interactions as intercultural relations. The study uses a general qualitative methodology to explore the dynamics of ELL parent-teacher interactions. Three broad themes that emerged as obstacles that inhibit productive ELL parent-teacher interactions were (1) teachers’judgments toward ELL students and their parents, (2) …

Not Your Mother’S Pda: The Transition From Pda Pilot To Full Acquisitions Integration, Bruce Fyfe, Erin Gallagher, Nicole Nolan, Harriet Rykse, Nazi Torabi, Yves Vanier

Charleston Library Conference

Western Libraries and Ingram Content Group worked together to establish a Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program that has been incorporated into the regular acquisitions workflow at Western. Some features of the program include: all titles selected for addition to the PDA collection are filtered through the approval profiles established by the librarians, the library’s holdings are uploaded to Ingram weekly so that duplicate titles are avoided, invoices for purchased PDA titles are sent weekly, and holdings for un-purchased and purchased PDA records are updated weekly. A PDA Working Group established the program at Western by meeting with collections librarians to …

Acceptance Of Disability In College Students, Brian Charles Carl Jul 2013

Acceptance Of Disability In College Students, Brian Charles Carl

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the findings of a study examining the following questions: How do students in a particular disability group differ from students in other disability groups in the degree to which they accept their disability? How are level of functional impairment and acceptance related? How are an individual's view of disability as a defining characteristic and acceptance related? How are functional impairment and the degree to which disability is seen as a defining characteristic related? Analysis using ANOVA indicated that there was not a significant difference in the level of acceptance between disability groups. Three Pearson's r correlation analyses …

Her Dark Materials: Conjuring The Feminine Imaginary In Practice, K Parker Jul 2013

Her Dark Materials: Conjuring The Feminine Imaginary In Practice, K Parker

School of Art, Design and Architecture

My paper explores film-making ‘as (a) woman’, an audiovisual form of écriture féminine, a term used by Hélène Cixous and others to denote ‘feminine writing’, the transformative practices that come through the body, with reference to Maya Deren’s theorisation of cinema and her ethnographic study of Haitian voodoo belief systems. In creative practice, I take the feminine position through an embodied layering of consciousness, entering a trance or dream state, which for Freud was, "the threshold between life and death ... a space of uncertainty in which boundaries blur between rational and the supernatural, the animate and the inanimate" (Mulvey, …

A Closer Look At 'Incluso' And 'Excepto', Amy S. Orf Jul 2013

A Closer Look At 'Incluso' And 'Excepto', Amy S. Orf

Faculty Works

In presenting prepositional pronouns, many Spanish textbooks include incluso and excepto in a list of exceptions that are used with the subject pronouns yo and tú, instead of mí and ti. While it is true that incluso and excepto do not directly precede mí and ti, it is not true that they always require the subject pronouns yo and tú. I argue that pronoun use with incluso and excepto is more complicated than indicated in textbooks and that it actually varies according to the context of the sentence.

The Dependent Origination Of Skepticism In Classical India: An Experiment In Cross-Cultural Philosophy, Ethan Mills Jul 2013

The Dependent Origination Of Skepticism In Classical India: An Experiment In Cross-Cultural Philosophy, Ethan Mills

Philosophy ETDs

I begin with the question of whether the problem of philosophical skepticism is inevitable, a question that was answered affirmatively by Hume and has come to be a source of debate in contemporary epistemology. If skepticism is an inevitable problem, then it should arise in any sufficiently sophisticated tradition of epistemology such as the tradition found in classical India. The Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu gives arguments from ignorance based on dreams that are quite similar to the dream argument of Descartes. However, while Vasubandhus arguments give an invitation to skeptical concerns (especially if he is a phenomenalist, rather than an idealist), …

Indita Que Si Indita Que No, Juan A. Romero Jr. Jul 2013

Indita Que Si Indita Que No, Juan A. Romero Jr.

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Much has been written on the balladry of the US. and Mexico. Much has been written on the musical tradition in New Mexico. Much has been written on the tradition of Inditas in New Mexico and Southern Colorado. So one must ask the question, why another study on a subject which many have exhausted? This thesis is written in hopes of adding to the dialogue these scholars have left us. It is also written in hopes of providing an anthology or canon that in times past did not exist or was inaccessible for scholarly analysis. Since most Inditas are dispersed …

Dual Language Teachers' Changing Views Of Spanish Literacy Teaching And Learning As Influenced By Critical Dialogue, Susana Ibarra Johnson Jul 2013

Dual Language Teachers' Changing Views Of Spanish Literacy Teaching And Learning As Influenced By Critical Dialogue, Susana Ibarra Johnson

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study grew out of a growing awareness of the severe lack of quality and authentic Spanish literacy instructional practices. There were two major purposes. The first was to examine the relationships between Dual Language (DL) teachers views on Spanish literacy instructional practices, their students', and the texts from which they taught to enact their practice. A second purpose was to identify and inform three DL educators of Spanish literacy pedagogical views so that they could consider those views in light of their current practices. The research design was three case studies of the three DL teachers and addressed four …

The Power Of Voice: The Indian Arts Research Centers Identity Shift, Laura Elliff Jul 2013

The Power Of Voice: The Indian Arts Research Centers Identity Shift, Laura Elliff

American Studies ETDs

Over the past three decades and in a significant shift, museum professionals have been collaborating with tribal communities by incorporating their voices into the daily tasks of exhibition design, education, and programs, as well as collections care and storage. This study will examine the Indian Arts Research Center's history and identity by highlighting collaborative projects that have resulted in the inclusion of Native voices and in some cases a joint decision-making process, which I argue has shifted the IARC's institutional identity. In the past, the IARC collection has mostly been managed and created by non-Native people, and Native input was …

Developing Adults' Oral English Communicative Competence In An Efl Environment: Collaborative Studies Of A Chinese Efl Teacher And Her Students, Feng Luo Jul 2013

Developing Adults' Oral English Communicative Competence In An Efl Environment: Collaborative Studies Of A Chinese Efl Teacher And Her Students, Feng Luo

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Economic and educational globalization presents Chinese college students with career and academic incentives to develop their oral English communicative competence; however, at the secondary level, students study English mainly for the purpose of written tests. As a result, their oral English learning is largely overlooked. In addition, significant challenges exist for learning oral English at the college level: large-sized classes, an English-as-a-foreign-language-learning (EFL) environment, traditional rote learning, student diversity, and different English-learning histories. This research aims at investigating effective teaching pedagogy suitable for large-sized college classes of students developing oral communicative competence in an EFL environment. With Vygotsky sociocultural theory …

Between Islamophobia And The Ummah: How Spanish Moroccans Are Negotiating Their Identities In Post 3-11 Madrid, Anwar Ouassini Jul 2013

Between Islamophobia And The Ummah: How Spanish Moroccans Are Negotiating Their Identities In Post 3-11 Madrid, Anwar Ouassini

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation explores how Spanish Moroccans are negotiating their identities in post 3-11 Madrid. In doing so, I explore and capture the lived discourses that reveal the underlying processes that are shaping their identities at the micro, meso, and macro level. The data for this research was collected through in-depth interviews with 33 Spanish- Moroccans residing in Madrid, Spain. Results revealed that Spanish Moroccan identities are increasingly racialized towards a Muslim-Arab religious identity by two ideological currents found at the local and the transnational level: Islamophobia and the Ummah. The Islamophobia racial project was experienced by my participants at the …

A Hermeneutic Composition Pedagogy: The Student As Self, Citizen, And Writer In Dewey, Arendt, And Ricoeur, Gregory Haley Jul 2013

A Hermeneutic Composition Pedagogy: The Student As Self, Citizen, And Writer In Dewey, Arendt, And Ricoeur, Gregory Haley

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation is primarily concerned with describing a hermeneutic theory of composition pedagogy for the purpose of developing socially engaged, self-reflective, and critically conscious citizens of a democracy. This work examines the intersection of higher education and civic responsibility that has been the foundational motive of academics since the first schools were opened by Isocrates and Plato. The question now, as it has been since the days of Plato, is how to educate new citizens to become informed, engaged critics of their environments for the purpose of maintaining a healthy self governance and preserving the democratic ideals of equality, justice, …
