Imagining Kurdish Identity In Mandatory Syria: Finding A Nation In Exile, Ahmet Serdar Akturk Aug 2013

Imagining Kurdish Identity In Mandatory Syria: Finding A Nation In Exile, Ahmet Serdar Akturk

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation looks at the activities of the Kurdish nationalists from Turkey who were exiled in Syria and Lebanon during the period of the French mandate, and especially Jaladet and Kamuran Bedirkhan. Scions of a princely Kurdish family from the Botan region in Eastern Anatolia, the Bedirkhan brothers initiated a Kurdish cultural movement in exile following the failure of two armed rebellions against the new Turkish Republic in 1925 and 1930. Central to this cultural movement was the publication of journals in Damascus and Beirut, namely Hawar (1932-1943) Ronahi (1942-1945), Roja Nu/Le Jour Nouveau (1943-1946), and Ster (1943-1945).

Exploring Adolescent Experiences Of Race, Ethnicity, And Socioeconomic Status In Counseling Relationships: A Qualitative Approach, Christina Crans Aug 2013

Exploring Adolescent Experiences Of Race, Ethnicity, And Socioeconomic Status In Counseling Relationships: A Qualitative Approach, Christina Crans

Dissertations

The ACA Code of Ethics (2005) states the expectation that counselors must understand the diverse backgrounds of their clients. In addition, counselors are called to understand how their personal cultural identity informs and affects the counseling process. Yet there is paucity in the literature regarding the multicultural client experience within a counseling relationship. Of the few multicultural counseling studies that attempt to address multicultural client concerns, the approach has been quantitative or reliant on counselor self-report. In addition, the lived counseling experiences of adolescents and individuals from lower socioeconomic status (SES) is absent in present literature. This qualitative study examined …

Factors Affecting Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students’ Selection Of A Deaf-Serving Institution: Deaf Identity Influences On College Choice, Pamela L. Carmichael Aug 2013

Factors Affecting Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students’ Selection Of A Deaf-Serving Institution: Deaf Identity Influences On College Choice, Pamela L. Carmichael

Education Doctoral

Student-university fit leads to increased satisfaction with a student’s postsecondary institution and has a positive effect on college completion (Braxton, Vesper, & Hossler, 1995). As increasing numbers of deaf and hard-of-hearing students elect to attend college (Newman, Wagner, Cameto, Knokey, & Shaver, 2010), the relationship between college choice and completion points to a need to better understand how students make their college decisions. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, the present study examined factors that influence deaf and hard-of-hearing students’ college choice and explored how deaf identity influences selection of a deaf-serving institution (DSI). The theoretical framework for the study was …

The Relationship Between Entrepreneurial Orientation And Organizational Effectiveness: An Analysis Of How Entrepreneurial Orientation Is Manifested In The Nonprofit Context, Philip C. Uncapher Aug 2013

The Relationship Between Entrepreneurial Orientation And Organizational Effectiveness: An Analysis Of How Entrepreneurial Orientation Is Manifested In The Nonprofit Context, Philip C. Uncapher

Education Doctoral

In today’s 24/7 globally interconnected world, effective leaders are needed more than ever. As organizations face new economic and competitive challenges, leadership qualities, characteristics, and behaviors may need to adapt to the new reality. This study examined the entrepreneurial behavior of leaders in nonprofit membership associations and analyzed how an entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is manifested in these organizations. Using an emergent mixed-methods methodology, this study surveyed nonprofit CEOs and board chairs to collect data on the viability and application of the three-part framework of an entrepreneurial orientation: innovativeness, ability to accept risk, and being proactive. Findings indicate that nonprofit leaders …

Intentional Killing Without Intending To Kill: Knobe’S Theory As A Rational Limit On Felony Murder, Joseph C. Mauro Aug 2013

Intentional Killing Without Intending To Kill: Knobe’S Theory As A Rational Limit On Felony Murder, Joseph C. Mauro

Louisiana Law Review

Felony murder authorizes maximum criminal punishment, the kind typically reserved for the most ruthless and calculating killers, for defendants who did not even intend to kill. Many retributivist scholars therefore criticize felony murder for abandoning the traditional notion that intent determines culpability and the appropriate degree of punishment. Despite widespread agreement with this criticism, however, felony murder persists in most jurisdictions. Joshua Knobe's empirical research turns this problem on its head by suggesting that intent is not just a mental state. Numerous experiments have shown, in fact, that people are more likely to call an action intentional, regardless of what …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to analyze the visual and linguistic characteristics of online (YouTube) videos and electronic newspapers, identifying relationships with positive, negative, and neutral attitudes toward swine confinement.

This study followed a content analysis design. Two coders, trained to an acceptable level of agreement (κ = .68), examined online videos and electronic newspapers, assessing linguistic and visual images used in relation to attitudes toward swine confinement. A series of search terms deemed suitable for this study's objectives were employed in multiple search engines, and 48 articles and 157 videos were coded for content.

Results from this study showed that …

Network Dynamics Of Visual Naming, Christopher R. Conner Aug 2013

Network Dynamics Of Visual Naming, Christopher R. Conner

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Recognition and naming of objects and actions are fundamental components of language. They involve several different systems working in coordination to accomplish a complex behavior. During visual naming, sensory and semantic processing are carried out by dedicated cortical substrates in the temporal and occipital lobes, while response selection and articulatory planning are handled by prefrontal cortex. Despite decades of research using lesion analysis, functional MRI and electro-encephalography, the precise dynamics involved remain unknown due to the inadequate spatio-temporal resolution of these methodologies. Of particular interest is the organization of semantic knowledge and the degree of serial and parallel organization of …

Note – Toward Effective Access To Justice In Haiti: Eliminating The Medical Certificate Requirement In Rape Prosecution, Shannon D. Lankenau Aug 2013

Note – Toward Effective Access To Justice In Haiti: Eliminating The Medical Certificate Requirement In Rape Prosecution, Shannon D. Lankenau

UC Law Journal

In Haiti, the overwhelming majority of rapes go unpunished. To date, the Haitian government has failed to promulgate a working legal framework in which it can effectively prosecute crimes of sexual violence. Women, in particular, are disproportionately burdened by these inadequacies. This Note explores one of the most problematic aspects of the current legal system: the de facto requirement that a woman obtain a medical certificate to corroborate her claim of rape. Although not mandated by Haitian law, medical certificates are regarded as the foundation of any prosecution because deficient investigations often fail to produce any additional evidence for use …

The Impact Of The Use Of Methods Of Immediate Corrective Feedback On Cognitive And Applied Rules Of The Quran Recitation Among Tenth Grade Omani Students, Maimuna Al-Zedgali, Thureya S. Shabibi Aug 2013

The Impact Of The Use Of Methods Of Immediate Corrective Feedback On Cognitive And Applied Rules Of The Quran Recitation Among Tenth Grade Omani Students, Maimuna Al-Zedgali, Thureya S. Shabibi

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies

The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of immediate corrective feedback in classroom discussions on the level of knowing and applying the rules of Quran recitation among tenth grade students. To achieve this, researchers used two tools: a written test, and a verbal test. After confirming the validity and reliability of the tools, they were administered to 84 tenth grade female students. The results revealed that the second experimental group outperformed the first experimental group and the control group in the application of the rules of Quranic recitation. Also, the two experimental groups outperformed the control group …

Exploring Critical Literacy Through Teachers’ Professional Learning, Christina Marie Ramirez-Nava Aug 2013

Exploring Critical Literacy Through Teachers’ Professional Learning, Christina Marie Ramirez-Nava

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

With a huge focus on professional development as a method to increase knowledge and skills, one-shot initiatives or flyby in-services bombard the teaching field. Moreover, with the increase of diversity, such as second language needs, children of poverty and other social issues in schools, a focus should be on implementing a critical stance through teacher collaboration

Critical literacy aims to make the unknown known and fight injustices, but many teachers are not aware of this ideology. Simply reading articles and books about critical literacy will not necessarily lead to a critical stance, pedagogical revolution, or engaging learning for students. Working …

Political Advertising In The 2012 Presidential Election: How Visual And Aural Techniques Are Used To Convey Meaning, James Lake Poston Aug 2013

Political Advertising In The 2012 Presidential Election: How Visual And Aural Techniques Are Used To Convey Meaning, James Lake Poston

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This paper looked at presidential television advertising in the 2012 U.S. election. The author has undertaken a deep analysis of the way audio and visual elements are used to construct meanings in televised political ads. Meaning is suggested through the visual and aural means of expression available to ad creators.

The organizing principle of this study is information manipulation for the purposes of influencing our perception of candidates and issues. This manipulation was revealed by examining the most prominent visual and aural dimensions within specific ads. The paper identified recurring aural and visual patterns in all the ads and then …

Uncovering Multimodality In Composition, Kevin Jacob Kelley Aug 2013

Uncovering Multimodality In Composition, Kevin Jacob Kelley

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Moje points out that “scholars have argued that some media, texts, and literacy practices that get counted as new are actually old, but our attention to them is new” (352), and this is true of multimodality. We are being re-engaged with multimodality because of the rise of technologies that allow writers to blend media in seemingly new ways, but we have known before the digital turn that reading and writing are inherently multimodal processes, we just did not have a phrase to describe the multiple semiotic channels that are used to compose until “multimodality.” Early university compositionists conceptualized writing as …

Team Design Communication Patterns In E-Learning Design And Development, Chrysi Rapanta, Marcelo Maina, Nicole Lotz, Alberto Bacchelli Aug 2013

Team Design Communication Patterns In E-Learning Design And Development, Chrysi Rapanta, Marcelo Maina, Nicole Lotz, Alberto Bacchelli

All Works

Prescriptive stage models have been found insufficient to describe the dynamic aspects of designing, especially in interdisciplinary e-learning design teams. There is a growing need for a systematic empirical analysis of team design processes that offer deeper and more detailed insights into instructional design (ID) than general models can offer. In this paper we present findings from two case studies of team design meetings involved in the development of fully online courses at two well-established European Distance Universities. We applied an activity-based approach to an extended verbal protocol dataset. This method proved to be adequate to describe the emerging team …

Immigrant Female Professors As Gendered 'Cultural Tokens' In University, Debaleena Ghosh Aug 2013

Immigrant Female Professors As Gendered 'Cultural Tokens' In University, Debaleena Ghosh

Research Papers

This study focuses on the intersection of gender, race, ethnicity and immigrant status to understand the binary division between ‘us’ and they’ that produces an experience of ‘outsider-within’, ‘otherness’ or ‘exotic other’ at workplaces, especially in academia. Therefore, this paper looks at how these different statuses meet to shape the academic experience of female faculty and determine their opportunities, responsibilities, authority, legitimacy and advancement at work. I interviewed immigrant female professors at a large public university in Midwest. I find that these women are segregated, disrespected, and denied of authority by both colleagues and students, they are stripped of their …

The Impact Of Specialized Treatment On The Empathy Levels Of Urban, Low-Income, Third And Fourth Grade Elementary School Students, Ronald Joseph Yother Aug 2013

The Impact Of Specialized Treatment On The Empathy Levels Of Urban, Low-Income, Third And Fourth Grade Elementary School Students, Ronald Joseph Yother

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the impact of specialized treatment on the empathy levels of urban, low-income, middle-aged elementary school students who attend a local neighborhood school. The data set consisted of the pre and posttest scores of 99 students who attend a single, small, urban, district school in a system of approximately 21,032 other elementary school students. The first of three research questions asked whether self-reported levels of empathy can be altered across the various experimental treatments (new clothes and empathy training) imposed during the study. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc comparisons for the pre and posttests …

The Eiios Task: Executive Function And Word Learning At 18-Months, Leslie A. Patton Aug 2013

The Eiios Task: Executive Function And Word Learning At 18-Months, Leslie A. Patton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was an investigation of the association between executive functioning (EF) ability and language development in the latter half of the second year. Fifty-five typically developing 18- month-olds were brought into the lab. The elicited imitation with inappropriate object substitution (EIIOS) task was used as a developmentally sensitive measure of EF. Language acquisition was assessed using a real-time word learning task as well as a parent report measure of vocabulary size (MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Sentences Version). Contrary to expectations, very few statistically significant associations were found between the EF measure and either language measure. Despite these …

Toward An Interactive Directory For Norfolk, Nebraska: 1899-1900, Robert B. Allen Aug 2013

Toward An Interactive Directory For Norfolk, Nebraska: 1899-1900, Robert B. Allen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

We describe steps toward an interactive directory for the town of Norfolk, Nebraska for the years 1899 and 1900. This directory would extend the traditional city directory by including a wider range of entities being described, much richer information about the entities mentioned and linkages to mentions of the entities in material such as digitized historical newspapers. Such a directory would be useful to readers who browse the historical newspapers by providing structured summaries of the entities mentioned. We describe the occurrence of entities in two years of the Norfolk Weekly News, focusing on several individuals to better understand the …

Why I Killed The Draft Horse: The Golden Bough, Robert Frost, And "Progress", Eugene Charles Mcgregor Boyle Iii Aug 2013

Why I Killed The Draft Horse: The Golden Bough, Robert Frost, And "Progress", Eugene Charles Mcgregor Boyle Iii

Master's Theses

The absence of criticism on Robert Frost's "The Draft Horse" suggests that it is a challenge to Frost scholarship. This reading views Frost's strange and neglected poem as a return to a monomyth offered by James Frazer's hugely influential The Golden Bough. In "The Draft Horse," Frost reconsiders the concept of ceremonial sacrifice that undergirds Frazer's encyclopedic study of world culture and, by performing ceremony as a kind of modem poesis, Frost complicates the hero/sacrificial object role and critiques the progressive ideology that grounds Frazer's account to fashion a troubling epic for modern America that implicates its national readers …

The Limitations Of Democratic Peace, Anthony Glenn Jordan Aug 2013

The Limitations Of Democratic Peace, Anthony Glenn Jordan

Master's Theses

The theory of Democratic Peace suggests that democracies are unlikely to wage war on one another, yet it spends little time actually defining what democracies are. Research on the theory of Democratic Peace suggests that the theory only applies to mature democracies, but how is maturity determined? The criteria used by multiple scholars is needed to defend the theory from particular challenges such as the Cenepa Valley War, but even with such defenses, the criteria omits how a state treats women and racial minorities. These omissions become clear when one examines how scholars treat the United States of America. This …

The Effects Of Visual Imagery And Keyword Cues On Third-Grade Readers' Memory, Comprehension, And Vocabulary Knowledge, Heather Brooker Aug 2013

The Effects Of Visual Imagery And Keyword Cues On Third-Grade Readers' Memory, Comprehension, And Vocabulary Knowledge, Heather Brooker

All Dissertations

It is estimated that nearly 70% of high school students in the United States need
some form of reading remediation, with the most common need being the ability to
comprehend the content and significance of the text (Biancarosa & Snow, 2004).
Research findings support the use of visual imagery and keyword cues as effective
comprehension strategies (Denner, McGinfly, & Brown, 1989; Gambrell & Jawitz, 1993;
Sadoski, 1985). This study extends the current body of research on these two strategies
by (a) exploring and comparing the combined effects and interactions of training students
in the coordinated use of visual imagery and …

Ever Learning, Ever Loving: Augustine On Teaching As Ministry, Ronnie P. Campbell Jr. Aug 2013

Ever Learning, Ever Loving: Augustine On Teaching As Ministry, Ronnie P. Campbell Jr.

Liberty Theological Review

While most remember Augustine (354-430 AD) as theologian, exegete, and philosopher, the purpose of this essay is to consider Augustine’s legacy and ministry as teacher. After his conversion (386 AD), Augustine’s views on teaching took a turn. His theological convictions thus set the course for his views on teaching throughout the rest of his life. It is to such views on teaching that this essay seeks to examine. Therefore this essay will wrestle through Augustine’s views on the role of the teacher and the learner and the link between the two, his theological basis for teaching, and some of the …

Contemplating Procession: Thomas Aquinas’ Analogy Of The Procession Of The Word In The Immanent Divine Life, Josh Waltman Aug 2013

Contemplating Procession: Thomas Aquinas’ Analogy Of The Procession Of The Word In The Immanent Divine Life, Josh Waltman

Liberty Theological Review

Thomas Aquinas’ Trinitarian theology has been criticized as proposing an abstract notion of God that is divorced from salvation history and that is supported by tedious and ultimately incomprehensible explication. By showing the goals and limitations of Thomas’ approach and by analyzing one element of his theology, it will be shown that these criticisms are unfounded. Specifically, this article will attempt to analyze Aquinas’ view of the procession of the Word, or act of “generation,” in the divine immanent life. It can be seen that Aquinas actually provides a metaphysical analogy for contemplating generation that avoids heresy and that absolutely …

New Narratologies: An Examination Of The Interplay Between Life, Land, And Story, Dana Turner Aug 2013

New Narratologies: An Examination Of The Interplay Between Life, Land, And Story, Dana Turner

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The study of land and geographical place remains to be an important theoretical consideration in the field of Narratology studies. This thesis illustrates how land and geography play a role in the maintenance of traditional culture and narratives in the rural communities of DeKalb and Neshoba counties in Mississippi. The first chapter argues that memory through story can yield significant historical findings in narrative identity. It is here where the discussion on historiography, memory, and narrative introduces a cognitive narratological lens that helps structure the psychological processing of life stories and oral histories. Then, the issues of self and narration …
