The Emergence Of The Digital Humanities, Steven E. Jones
The Emergence Of The Digital Humanities, Steven E. Jones
English Faculty Publications
The past decade has seen a profound shift in our collective understanding of the digital network. What was once understood to be a transcendent virtual reality is now experienced as a ubiquitous grid of data that we move through and interact with every day, raising new questions about the social, locative, embodied, and object-oriented nature of our experience in the networked world.
In The Emergence of the Digital Humanities, Steven E. Jones examines this shift in our relationship to digital technology and the ways that it has affected humanities scholarship and the academy more broadly. Based on the premise …
Morality, The Sacred And God In Ghanaian Hip- Hop, Harry N. K. Odamtten
Morality, The Sacred And God In Ghanaian Hip- Hop, Harry N. K. Odamtten
History
The adoption of Hip-Hop by the world’s youth is a turning point in the history of youth culture in particular and global public culture in general. The embracing of Hip-Hop in the West African country of Ghana is exemplary of this worldwide transformation. The indigenous Ghanaian version of Hip-Hop is Hip-Life. This Ghanaian musical genre is a combination of Hip-Hop and High-Life. High-Life is also a Ghanaian genre with West African and Afro- Diaspora roots. It emerged in Ghana as part of the anti-colonial struggle in West Africa, and has spawned of many varieties until the emergence of Hip- Life. …
Summary Of Hungarian Apocalypse Analysis, Arle R. Lommel, Dr. John Robertson
Summary Of Hungarian Apocalypse Analysis, Arle R. Lommel, Dr. John Robertson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The fifteenth century was an important time in the development of the Hungarian nation and the Hungarian language. Despite a war with both the Turks and the Austrians, Hungarian culture was undergoing a flowering in the independent principality of Transylvania. This was linked largely to the introduction of printing from Germany. For the first time Hungarian texts could be disseminated widely to a populace that had never seen vernacular literature before. Particularly important in this blossoming was the publication of biblical translations, translations that the Reformers thought would put God into the hands of the people and take away Rome’s …

Stich On Charity And Truth, David A. Jensen, Dr. K. Codell Carter
Stich On Charity And Truth, David A. Jensen, Dr. K. Codell Carter
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Stephen Stich argues in the Fragmentation of Reason for a pragmatic account of cognition; that is, our processes of how we acquire knowledge should be evaluated, he maintains, not on how well they produce true beliefs, but on how well they produce beliefs relevant to some pragmatic value (survival, happiness, and so forth). To put forth his pragmatic account, Stich first must debunk at least two mainstays of epistemology: charity and truth.
Thinking Aloud In The Science Classroom: Can A Literacy Strategy Increase Student Learning In Science?, Lindsey Joan Mockel
Thinking Aloud In The Science Classroom: Can A Literacy Strategy Increase Student Learning In Science?, Lindsey Joan Mockel
Dissertations and Theses
This research study investigated the effect of using the think aloud protocol while reading informational text on students' ability to learn from text in a secondary science classroom. The participants in this study were high school students (n=47) in three classes of a mixed-grade Integrated Biology, Chemistry, and Physics course. The study tracked student achievement during a four-week curriculum unit on the theory of evolution and evidence for biological evolution. All students received instruction on using the think aloud protocol, and all students practiced the think aloud protocol when reading short articles related to scientific evidence for evolution. The researcher …
Social And Linguistic Factors In The Development Of Children With Autism, Emma C. Kelty-Stephen
Social And Linguistic Factors In The Development Of Children With Autism, Emma C. Kelty-Stephen
Doctoral Dissertations
There is an ongoing debate in the literature over the main source of information that children use when acquiring and developing language. Theories either support a computational linguistic perspective – in which children are thought to use aspects of language itself and their ability to perceive patterns to acquire language – or a social perspective, in which children are thought to use their ability to jointly attend with communication partners in order to acquire language. It is difficult to tease apart these sources of information in typically-developing children, but children with autism spectrum disorders have difficulty with both joint attention …

Understanding The Support Needs Of People With Intellectual And Related Developmental Disabilities Through Cluster Analysis And Factor Analysis Of Statewide Data, Yuwadee Viriyangkura
Understanding The Support Needs Of People With Intellectual And Related Developmental Disabilities Through Cluster Analysis And Factor Analysis Of Statewide Data, Yuwadee Viriyangkura
Theses and Dissertations
Through a secondary analysis of statewide data from Colorado, people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities (ID/DD) were classified into five clusters based on their support needs characteristics using cluster analysis techniques. Prior latent factor models of support needs in the field of ID/DD were examined to investigate the factor structure of the support needs construct using confirmatory factor analytic procedures.

Designing Funwritr: Unpacking An Affinity-Based, Professionalizing, Graduate-Level Educational Technology Design Experience, Justin Olmanson, Chung-Kai Huang, Rob Scordino, Jaejin Lee
Learn X Design Conference Series
In this paper and presentation we describe, unpack, and reflect upon the dynamic, evolving processes of collaborative, democratized educational technology design that led to the creation of an open-ended literacy development and language acquisition environment named FunWritr. When the project began, each member of our group was either in a graduate program for educational technology design or interested in matriculating into such a program. Over the course of five years we have worked together, growing as designers, developers, and researchers of educational technologies. Reflecting on our authentic, self-guided, evolving curriculum ofexperiences, we recognize processes and unpack factors that contributed to …
Men, Women, And Russian Requests: The Influence Of Gender On The Pragmatic Competence Of Second Language Learners, Elizabeth Hassell, Jennifer Brown
Men, Women, And Russian Requests: The Influence Of Gender On The Pragmatic Competence Of Second Language Learners, Elizabeth Hassell, Jennifer Brown
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dr. Jennifer Bown and I wished to assess how gender affects the pragmatic competence of students learning Russian. By analyzing the differences between men and women’s ability to form appropriate requests in their second language, we hoped to assist other researchers in developing better language-teaching techniques.

Metaphors are a very important aspect of language, particularly of the English language. Lakoff and Johnson opened linguists to the study of metaphors by pointing out that English speakers use metaphors throughout their speech. For example, Lakoff and Johnson say that the phrase “spending time” is evidence of the metaphor “time is money,” which allows speakers to use money terms with time terms. According to Lakoff and Johnson, these metaphors permeate almost every aspect of English speech.
Syntax And English Language Acquisition, Malena Weitze, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Syntax And English Language Acquisition, Malena Weitze, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
An oral testing method, Elicited imitation (EI), has provided helpful insight into the process of language acquisition and language assessment over the past 40 years. EI is an oral test in which the subject hears a sentence, forms a cognitive representation, and then produces a sentence according to that representation (Bley-Vroman & Chaudron 1994, 245). The theory behind EI is that, controlling for utterance length, people can only reproduce an utterance if they understand its syntax (sentence structure). Although there is controversy concerning the use of EI—asserting that it is not the most precise language acquisition assessment tool—currently prevalent methods …
Semantic Change In Supreme Context: Semantics In The Privacy Line And Originalist Interpretation, Adam Prestidge, Dr. William Eggington
Semantic Change In Supreme Context: Semantics In The Privacy Line And Originalist Interpretation, Adam Prestidge, Dr. William Eggington
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In a nation governed by laws, change in the meaning of the words that compose those laws can have an unexpected impact. When I began to research this topic, I noticed that in certain Supreme Court cases, the word liberty was central to the discussion of the rights in question, and was used in some surprising ways. In the 2003 Supreme Court case, Lawrence v. Texas, liberty was described as something that guaranteed “the full right to engage in private conduct without government intervention.” After this statement piqued my interest, I noticed that Planned Parenthood of Southeastern PA v. Casey …
English Article Acquisition Of Native Russian Speakers, Jacob Burdis, Ray Graham
English Article Acquisition Of Native Russian Speakers, Jacob Burdis, Ray Graham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For decades, researchers have explored various aspects of the development or morphology in second language learners of English. Undoubtedly, one of the most popular models describing this development is the natural order hypothesis. Stephen Krashen (1977) presents an average morphological order of acquisition for English where learners, “acquiring English as a second language also show a “natural order” for grammatical morphemes, regardless of their first language” (p. 146). Many recent studies have challenged the assertion that a learners’ native language does not influence this order, but plays a vital role in its development. This study examines an aspect of the …
"Honey, We's All Creoles": Exploring South Louisiana's Creole Identity, Culture, And Heritage, Elista Istre
"Honey, We's All Creoles": Exploring South Louisiana's Creole Identity, Culture, And Heritage, Elista Istre
Student Theses and Dissertations
South Louisiana boasts a cultural mélange that sets it apart from the rest of the United States. Largely due to the tourism industry, many associate the region with Cajun culture; fewer realize that Creoles inhabited the region before the Cajuns arrived and still continue to play an important role in the area's cultural landscape today. The definition of Creole changed over time as Louisiana's native-born population either claimed or rejected their European or African ancestry. Although the debate over "true" Creole identity continues, throughout the prairies of South Louisiana, the term typically refers to French-speaking individuals of varying skin tones …
Creating A Sentence-Level Syntactic, Morphological And Lexical Feature Identification Application, Ross Hendrickson, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Creating A Sentence-Level Syntactic, Morphological And Lexical Feature Identification Application, Ross Hendrickson, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Elicited imitation (EI) was originally used to study L1 acquisition in children and has since been applied to L2 oral proficiency testing (Chaudron, 1994). The PSST research group I am involved with has been researching EI as a viable method of language proficiency testing for some years now. An EI test consists of a series of sentence-length items that a subject must repeat verbatim after hearing each one. The sentences must be carefully chosen for their lexical, morphological, syntactic, and semantic content as well as for their length (usually counted in syllables). The primary impetus for this research project lies …
The Least You Should Know About Teaching A Second Or Foreign Language, Danielle Shurtleff, Lynn Henrichsen
The Least You Should Know About Teaching A Second Or Foreign Language, Danielle Shurtleff, Lynn Henrichsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
People from a wide variety of different backgrounds and ages participate in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Many will be going abroad to countries where people need English to advance their education or employment. A majority of them will not have the training and experience that they should have to effectively teach English and are not in a position, due to finances, timing, or location, to get a TESOL degree or certificate. I am working with Dr. Henrichsen on a project that will solve the problem of inexperienced teachers going abroad with little or no knowledge or experience. …

Researching English Language Instruction To The Deaf In Germany, Brooke Harding, Dr. Mark W. Tanner
Researching English Language Instruction To The Deaf In Germany, Brooke Harding, Dr. Mark W. Tanner
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The principle question this research was to address is how instructors for the deaf in Germany are approaching English language and literacy development in deaf students. (The term deaf is used in this paper to denote both deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals). English language instruction is part of the standard curriculum in schools for the deaf in Germany as a prerequisite for students to receive the secondary school certificate of completion (RealschulabschlujB) or to take the college entrance exam (Abitur). However, language learning presents deaf students with significant challenges. Language in its spoken form is virtually inaccessible to the deaf which …

Over The Individualism Wall: Creating An Ubuntu Community At Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish, Jordan Layton, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As I near my host family’s neighborhood, the streets become constraining tunnels. Lining the curbs are wall after wall of concrete above my head, topped with razor wires, electric lines, or metal spikes. The only breaks to the walled monotony are tall, jail-like gates. Shutting the automatic gate behind me instills the intentional impression of exclusion from the outside. Privacy and security of walled homes is increasingly sought after, even in townships where resistance to apartheid once forged strong communal unity. Here, such walls are also signs of community rejection. Both anthropologists and politicians have noted a decline in sense …
