Environmental Productivity Predicts Migration, Demographic, And Linguistic Patterns In Prehistoric California, Brian F. Codding, Terry L. Jones Sep 2013

Environmental Productivity Predicts Migration, Demographic, And Linguistic Patterns In Prehistoric California, Brian F. Codding, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

Global patterns of ethnolinguistic diversity vary tremendously. Some regions show very little variation even across vast expanses, whereas others exhibit dense mosaics of different languages spoken alongside one another. Compared with the rest of Native North America, prehistoric California exemplified the latter. Decades of linguistic, genetic, and archaeological research have produced detailed accounts of the migrations that aggregated to build California’s diverse ethnolinguistic mosaic, but there have been few have attempts to explain the process underpinning these migrations and why such a mosaic did not develop elsewhere. Here we show that environmental productivity predicts both the order of migration events …

Priming Change Talk : The Experimental Manipulation Of Client Speech, Christopher Mclouth Sep 2013

Priming Change Talk : The Experimental Manipulation Of Client Speech, Christopher Mclouth

Psychology ETDs

Previous research has supported the link between client language in favor of change (change talk) during Motivational Interviewing sessions and subsequent substance use outcomes. The present study investigated whether the frequency of change talk can be increased using a pre-treatment priming paradigm. Eighty six current cigarette smokers were randomized into one of three priming manipulations: change talk, sustain talk, or a neutral condition. After completing a version of the Scrambled-Sentence test (change, sustain, or neutral) intended to prime or suppress change talk, participants engaged in a pseudo-therapeutic encounter with a research assistant who asked them a series of open-ended questions …

Music And Conflict Resolution: Can A Music And Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?, Parfait Adegboyé Bassalé Sep 2013

Music And Conflict Resolution: Can A Music And Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?, Parfait Adegboyé Bassalé

Dissertations and Theses

The Story and Song Centered Pedagogy (SSCP) is a workshop that uses songs, stories and reflective questioning to increase empathy. This preliminary study tested the prediction that being exposed to the SSCP would increase empathy using, the Emotional Concern (EC) and Perspective Taking (PT) subscales of the renowned Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) (Davis, 1990). Subjects self-reported their answers to the IRI before and after undergoing the SSCP intervention. Comparing their pre and post intervention results, no statistically significant changes were noticed for the EC and PT scales (p-value = 0.7093 for EC; p-value = 0.6328 for PT). These results stand …

Executive And Nonverbal Contributions To Pragmatic Language In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ashley B. De Marchena Ph.D. Sep 2013

Executive And Nonverbal Contributions To Pragmatic Language In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Ashley B. De Marchena Ph.D.

Doctoral Dissertations

Pragmatic language deficits are universal in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Pragmatic language skills require the integration of multiple communicative and social skills, and as such represent an intersection of two of the three major domains of impairment in ASD: communication and social interaction. Data from typically developing (TD) populations also suggests that pragmatic language is supported by complex skills such as gesture and the executive functions. Here we investigate common ground, a pragmatic language skill in which speakers adjust the contents of their speech based on their listener’s perceived knowledge, in adolescents with ASD and TD. We designed an …

Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright Sep 2013

Preserving Moral Recognition In The Face Of Aggression: Aikido As A Practice Of Physical Intersubjectivity, Charles W. Wright

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Practitioners of Aikido advance the claim, peculiar to many, that martial training can support moral action. This essay examines the claim by exploring communicative structures implicit in the response to attack made possible by this art's techniques. This exploration reveals three dimensions of intersubjectivity embedded in the practice of Aikido, dimensions that explicate the ethical imperative of the art.

International Graduate Students’ Cross - Cultural Academic Engagement: Stories Of Indonesian Doctoral Students On An American Campus, Amirul Mukminin, Brenda J. Mcmahon Sep 2013

International Graduate Students’ Cross - Cultural Academic Engagement: Stories Of Indonesian Doctoral Students On An American Campus, Amirul Mukminin, Brenda J. Mcmahon

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of academic engagement of twelve Indonesian doctoral students attending an American graduate school during their first term and over time through demographic background surveys and semi - structured in - depth interviews. The research design was qualitative in the phenomenological approach (Creswell, 2007; Merriam, 1998; Moustakas, 1994; Patton, 1990). We analyzed our interviews data by using within - case and cross - case displays and analyses (Miles & Huberman, 1994) while we analyzed the demographic data descriptively. We identified five major themes related to Indonesian doctoral students’ academic engagement …

Reflective Teaching Practices: Looking Beneath The Surface And Emergent Cyclical Experiential Learning Processes And Outcomes, Mazie E. Black Sep 2013

Reflective Teaching Practices: Looking Beneath The Surface And Emergent Cyclical Experiential Learning Processes And Outcomes, Mazie E. Black

MA TESOL Collection

In this professional paper, I examined the kinds of processes I experienced for English language acquisition (ELA) in practice. This journey is about my transition from a generalist to a TESOL specialist. One of my most successful lessons was not in English, but a science lesson to students who were majority users of English as a second or third language. It was about the use of reflective and refractive telescopes. My approaches were very student centered and project based. They worked in groups, chose which type of telescope to make, kept journals with notes, drawings and key vocabulary, made inferences, …

Perception Of Elite And Universal Systems Of Higher Education: An Explanation Of The Empirical Thresholds, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2013

Perception Of Elite And Universal Systems Of Higher Education: An Explanation Of The Empirical Thresholds, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Systems of higher education are usually divided into elite, mass, and universal, depending on the proportion of young people who attend college. Human experts perceive a system as elite is less than 15\% of young people of the 18--21 age group attend college, and as universal if more than 40% of young people of this age group attend college. The corresponding 15% and 40% thresholds are, however, purely empirical. In this paper, we provide an explanation for these empirical thresholds -- an explanation based on the known psychological 7 plus minus 2 law.

On The Primitives Of Causality: From The Semantics Of Agonist And Antagonist To Models Of Accident Causation And System Safety, Loïc Brevault, Francesca Favaro, Joseph Saleh Sep 2013

On The Primitives Of Causality: From The Semantics Of Agonist And Antagonist To Models Of Accident Causation And System Safety, Loïc Brevault, Francesca Favaro, Joseph Saleh

Faculty Publications

Controversial discussions on causality have been present in ancient philosophy since the days of Aristotle. Despite the use of this concept in numerous subjects, there is no consensus on the definition of causality and its possible mathematization. Many authors have analyzed the relation between causes and effects; the predominant school of thought reduces causation to a physical relation (either deterministic or probabilistic) between two events. The distinction between causes and consequences is not always clear and meaningful as different “layers of understanding” may be applied to the notion of causality. From this point of view the cause-effect implication relation can …

The Spanish Adaptation Of The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2: Translation And Psychometric Analysis, Linda Sue Jackson, Steven Little, Angeleque Akin-Little Sep 2013

The Spanish Adaptation Of The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2: Translation And Psychometric Analysis, Linda Sue Jackson, Steven Little, Angeleque Akin-Little

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Autism is an increasingly prevalent developmental neurological condition that manifests in pervasive impairments in social interaction, communication, and stereotypic behavior and interests. Early identification leads to positive long-term outcomes. At present, all standardized rating instruments are written in English; therefore, the purpose of the present study was to adapt the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2 from English into Spanish using the state-of-the-art procedures described in the literature. The English instrument was translated into Spanish, back-translated into English, and then revised using an iterative process. The adapted instrument's psychometric qualities were substantiated. An alpha coefficient of .96 verified the adapted instrument's internal …

A Report On The 2012–13 Composition And Rhetoric Category Of The Mla Job Information List, Christina M. Lavecchia, Janine Morris, Carla Sarr, Jim Ridolfo

Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles

As part of rhetmap.org’s experiment mapping the Composition and Rhetoric (C/R) category of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Job Information List (JIL), we present the following summary of the 2012–13 job market season. Rhetmap.org scraped the MLA JIL C/R data once a week from September 2012 to July 2013. By the first week of July, 2013 there were approximately 282 listings posted. Of those listings, 205 were posted by December 31, 2012 or in the first four months of the 2012–13 job market. In the next four sections we have broken down the C/R into four categories: geography, type of …

Does Patronage Matter? Connecting Influences On Judicial Appointments With Judicial Decision Making, Lori Hausegger, Troy Riddell, Matthew Hennigar

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The federal government's power to appoint judges has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. While many suggest that partisan affiliation, gender and professional background may be influencing the Canadian appointment process, and some have called into question the fairness of such influences, little attention has been directed at determining whether these characteristics influence the outcome of cases. This paper studies decisions made by the Ontario Court of Appeal between 1990 and 2003 and uses a unique measure of partisan affiliation in an attempt to answer the question: do characteristics which play a role in the appointment process influence judicial …
