In France, 1995 marked the year of a series of bombs exploded in public areas including but not limited to crowded subway stations in both Paris and Lyon. The series of bombings testifies to France’s lack of immunity in the postcolonial struggle over the future of its former colonies. Moreover, they renewed widespread fears that France’s large Algerian immigrant population represented a fifth column of a global Islamist insurgency that stretched from Kabul to Peshawar to Algeria to the United States to France’s own working-class suburbs called les banlieues. In our essay we trace the evolution of the critical theory of religion, or comparative dialectical religiology, out of the critical theory of society of the Institute for Social Research or the Frankfurt School. For us, the history of religions reflects the history of humanity’s intellectual and spiritual evolution. As we developed our critical theory of religion, we have tried to supersede concretely the great accomplishments of three generations of critical theorists, particularly in the field of religion. ‘Abdolkarim Soroush is the penname for Hossein Haj Faraj Dabbᾱgh (1945–). He is one of the most controversial figures in the religious and political polemics of postrevolutionary Iran. This is owing to his early adherence to the Islamic revolutionary values, his polemics against Marxism, later departure from the conservative Islam toward a reformist stand based on the philosophy of science and modern hermeneutics, and his current role as an uncompromising and outspoken opposition voice, as well as a fervent supporter of the Green Movement. This dissertation examines African-American Islamic culture from 1920 through 1959, a period I label the "African-American Islamic Renaissance" (AAIR). The AAIR is characterized by a significant increase in interest in Islam, extreme diversity in views about Islam, and the absence of a single organization dominating African-American Islamic culture for a significant amount of time. Previous works dealing with African-American Islam in this period have failed to fully recognize these features, particularly the last of these. To develop a national framework of needs analysis, the present study investigated the English language learning needs of the Omani Grade 11 EFL students. Using a multidimensional model of needs analysis, it addressed the language use context, the English language instruction context, the learners’ motivation and goal context, and Means Analysis context. It is commonly believed that in the early phase of Islamization of the Malay Archipelago, Islam was presented to the indigenous people in the form of syncretistic Sufism. The version of Sufism that had been widely propagated then was the wujūdiyyah doctrine identical to the waḥdat al-wujūd attributed to Ibn ‘Arabī (d. 637/1240). Early Malay scholars like Hamzah al-Fansūrī (d.1015/1607) and Shams al-Dīn al-Sumatrānī (d. 1039/1630) were among the forerunners of this doctrine. This group was vehemently opposed by Orthodox Sunni scholars represented by people like Nūr al-Dīn al-Ranīrī (d.1068/1658) and moderately by ‘Abd al-Ra‘ūf al-Sinkilī (d. 1104/1693). Around the …

While the use of the internet and social media as a tool for extremists and terrorists has been well documented, understanding the mechanisms at work has been much more elusive. This paper begins with a grounded theory approach guided by a new theoretical approach to power that utilizes both terrorism cases and extremist social media groups to develop an explanatory model of radicalization. Preliminary hypotheses are developed, explored and refined in order to develop a comprehensive model which is then presented.
