The Nps Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol, Rodney Horrocks Nov 2013

The Nps Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol, Rodney Horrocks

National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013

The national Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol is an attempt to standardize visitor impact monitoring in all National Park Service managed caves. With standardized monitoring in place, it will be feasible for the first time to compare monitoring data from caves across the country. This cave monitoring protocol was initiated at the NPS Cave Vital Signs Workshop held in Lakewood, Colorado in 2008. That workshop identified the vital signs that were common to all caves, including cave visitor impact. A committee convened at that workshop decided that the cave visitor impact monitoring protocol would address four parameters of …

Universal Goals & Local Application: Theological Field Education At St. John Vianney Seminary, Germaine Bruno Nov 2013

Universal Goals & Local Application: Theological Field Education At St. John Vianney Seminary, Germaine Bruno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a curriculum history of theological field education at Denver's Roman Catholic seminary, St. John Vianney. The study utilizes archival material and the historical method to construct an educational historiography of the evolution and development of theological field curricula from 1910-2010. The research questions focus on two areas: the role of the Catholic Church in shaping seminary curricula and the adaptation and application of these Church guidelines by practitioners in the local context.

The study utilizes the conceptual tools of Kelly Ritter (2009) to analyze the findings in the light of socio-historical forces which shape curricula. According to …

Slope Of Change Through D-Cycloserine Facilitation Of Exposure Therapy In A Social Anxiety Population, Christina M. Sheerin Nov 2013

Slope Of Change Through D-Cycloserine Facilitation Of Exposure Therapy In A Social Anxiety Population, Christina M. Sheerin

Dissertations

The present study sought to add to a growing base of research investigating approaches that facilitate the therapeutic effects of exposure-based therapy for social anxiety disorders. In particular, the approach involves the use of medication adjuvants that work in conjunction with therapeutic learning. This work translates findings from preclinical work to further our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that impact extinction learning. Among others, a promising method has been found with the use of D-cycloserine (DCS), a partial NMDA receptor agonist. Evidence of its positive impact in preclinical work has led to its application to clinical populations who suffer from …

The Art Of Profitable Service Recovery: A Strategic Model, Aaron R. Brough, Dr. Kristen Detienne Oct 2013

The Art Of Profitable Service Recovery: A Strategic Model, Aaron R. Brough, Dr. Kristen Detienne

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Disappointed customers are less likely to continue doing business with a firm and more likely to drive other customers away. Obviously, such actions can be costly for companies. Service recovery may be defined as any actions a company undertakes in order to mitigate the damaging effects of service failure. Successful service recovery restores, and occasiona lly elevates, prefailure levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty. The following two pages summarize an honors thesis that shows how companies can strategically design a profitable service recovery system. Although service recovery has been shown to increase profits in many instances, other research argues that …

“Hidden In Plain Sight”: Locating The Men And Women Of The 1954 Boston Special Youth Program, Richard K. Moule Jr., Scott H. Decker

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"The growing prevalence of longitudinal research in the social sciences, coupled with technological advances, provide new opportunities for researchers to more readily find participants from earlier studies. In addition, these advances necessitate the development of new strategies and methodologies for locating and building rapport with respondents. Drawing on previous methods of subject identification and location, this paper examines techniques for locating and interviewing former gang members from the 1954-1957 Special Youth Program in Roxbury, MA. In contrast to most longitudinal studies, (1) more than 50 years have passed since the original study with no contact with respondents in the interim, …

Sounds Of A People: An Ethnomusicological Study In Rio De Janeiro, Scott Harwood Homer, Dr. Ron Brough

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The music of Brazil has a rich heritage and great diversity. Its rhythms, developed by street musicians, are sophisticated and challenging. The people I met know well the songs they hear live and on the radio, and the musicians respond to this by constantly performing creative arrangements of what is formally called “Brazilian Popular Music” (MPB in Portuguese). The result is a culture in which music is a pleasurable part of daily life for most everyone.

A Thematic Approach To Teach Introductory Sociology, Albert E. Mccormick Jr. Oct 2013

A Thematic Approach To Teach Introductory Sociology, Albert E. Mccormick Jr.

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Soon into his career, the author discerned several pedagogic flaws in introductory sociology texts. Responding to these flaws, he organized his introductory course around the theme of social change. This theme serves as a background for and lead-in to just five other topic areas amenable to a basic understanding of the discipline: demography, social differentiation, social stratification, the family, and deviance. Sociological theory, statistics, and methods are linked to these substantive topic areas only where appropriate. Topics are covered in depth and important concepts are directly illustrated by college-level readings, written by sociologists. The result was the development of an …

Worked Ballast Flint At Aptucxet, Barbara E. Luedtke

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The gunflint industry of western Europe represents an extraordinary revival of the art of flint-knapping, which had largely disappeared from the technological repertoire of the region after the Neolithic. During the classic period of flintlock weapons in the 19th and 19th centuries, gunflint production appears to have been performed primarily by specialists. Demand for gunflints began in the 17th century, however, especially in North America, and was sometimes met by the "do it yourself" efforts of non-specialists. An assemblage recently excavated in Bourne, Massachusetts provides an opportuntiy to study such efforts.

Economic Factors Led To The Fall Of Jin Dynasty : Focus On The Economic Effects After Relocation Of Capital To Kaifeng, Ming Hong Wong Oct 2013

Economic Factors Led To The Fall Of Jin Dynasty : Focus On The Economic Effects After Relocation Of Capital To Kaifeng, Ming Hong Wong

Lingnan Theses

This thesis traces ramifications of the relocation of the Imperial Capital during the Jin dynasty. It argues the decline and fall of the Jin is rooted in this relocation. In 1209-1213 C.E., faced with the Mongol military threat and a dire shortage of grains, the Jin dynasty (1115-1234) was forced to relocate its capital from Zhongdu to Nanjing (Kaifeng). The sudden move, however, crippled effective governance in the former capital and its surrouding areas, the Heshuo region. Here, poor governance was soon followed by swarms of bandits, and in particular led to the rise of the Red Jacket Bandits, decimating …

Love That Tames: Anti-Heroes, Power And Islamic Reform Reflected In Two Iranian Films, David Sander Oct 2013

Love That Tames: Anti-Heroes, Power And Islamic Reform Reflected In Two Iranian Films, David Sander

Journal of Religion & Film

This paper is an exploration of two Iranian films that draw upon spiritual, artistic and literary roots in Islamic history, while at the same time engaging in critiques of knowledge and power in contemporary Muslim societies. These films offer a chance to explore ways in which culture (as distinct from theological discourse) deals with problems of reform in Muslim societies. This article juxtaposes the films with the trickster archetype in folklore, Sufi thought about leadership, and beliefs about the figure of the Mahdi (“the guided one” mentioned in Prophetic hadith as preceding the second coming of Jesus).

Learning Cast Up From The Mire: Archaeological Investigations Of Schoolhouses In The Northeastern United States, James G. Gibb, April M. Beisaw

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Common schools, often comprising a single room with one or two teachers, taught millions of children from the 1850s through the 1930s. They have provided source material for objective historical writings on education and inspired subjective literature on the school experiences of teachers and students. But as prominent as one-room schools have been in the North American experience, and in the perceptions of rural 19th- and early 20th-century life, these ubiquitous structures have not found a place in the archaeological literature. This paper examines the archaeological potential of schoolhouse sites for providing useful information not otherwise available to historians, poets, …
