Borders And Objects: Representing The Geopolitical In New World Art Histories, 1990-2010, Fang-Lin Hou
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Several contemporary art historians have been interested in exploring how their discipline could respond to the increasing globalisation of knowledge and information by encompassing global perspectives into the methodologies that underpin their approaches to art historiography. This dissertation aims to explore how, in developing their new approaches to world art history, they have drawn on a range of natural and social sciences, thus enabling their work to be placed in a wider social, political and indeed global context. While their individual approaches are many and varied it is important to identify commonalities between them so as to highlight unifying approaches …
Mythogeographic Performance And Performative Interventions In Spaces Of Heritage-Tourism, Phil Smith
Mythogeographic Performance And Performative Interventions In Spaces Of Heritage-Tourism, Phil Smith
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Abstract MYTHOGEOGRAPHIC PERFORMANCE AND PERFORMATIVE INTERVENTIONS IN SPACES OF HERITAGE-TOURISM by PHIL SMITH This thesis offers new models for participatory and performative interventions in sites of heritage tourism through a theorized practical engagement. Drawing on both Tourism Studies and Performance Studies, the primary aim of these interventions is to reveal and provoke ways of seeing and using these sites as places of multiple meanings rather than as ones constricted and bounded by normative heritage narratives in their production and management. The experimental phase of the project discussed in the thesis includes three contrasting case studies: GeoQuest, Sardine Street, and Water …
A Comparative Analysis Of How The Rights Of Children As Set Out In The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child Are Made Effective Through Their Implementation In Kurdistan/Iraq And The United Kingdom, Nishitiman Mohammed
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted in 1989. It was hoped that the Convention would have a positive impact on all children however, despite a country ratifying the Convention and proclaiming to have laws in the interests of children it is still possible for that country to fail in the attempt to implement children’s rights effectively. This can clearly be seen in Kurdistan, Iraq where implementation of children’s rights remains limited. With the continuing violence in Iraq, children’s rights have been somewhat neglected and as with many such situations children are the innocent …

Conceptualizing The Use Of Cognitive Interventions Among Persons With Intellectual Disabilities Who Experience Depression, Abdoulaye Diallo, Shawn P. Saladin, Darlene A.G. Groomes, Jerome Fischer, Sandra Hansmann
School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
Depression can affect the lives of all persons and can have especially profound implications on those with cognitive limitations; however, depression need not be an insurmountable roadblock to employment for persons with intellectual disabilities. Cognitive interventions - such as life story approach, socio-cognitive, and rational emotive behavior therapy-can be effective for litigating problems with depression among those with cognitive limitation including employment-related barriers due to depression. This article reviews how counselors can use cognitive interventions' behavioral and cognitive components to assist those with intellectual disabilities with depression.
Genetic Transformation Of Cauliflower (Brassica Oleracea Var.Botrytis) Using Agrobacterium Tumefaciens As A Vector For Improved Stress Resistance, Fadil Al-Swedi
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Genetic transformation of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var.botrytis) using Agrobacterium tumefaciens as a vector for improved stress resistance. Fadil Al-Swedi Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is described as a recalcitrant plant to genetic transformation processes especially Agrobacterium-mediated and as an extremely low frequency event then it requires a large amount of explants for this procedure to succeed. This thesis describes the development and refinement of a mass propagation system for cauliflower micropropagation and its use for overcoming recalcitrance to genetic transformation. Shoot meristematic tissue was taken from the curd of cauliflower and used to establish in-vitro cultures in liquid medium. Explants …

Histopathological Effects Of Metal And Metalic Nanoparticles On The Body Systems Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Genan Adnan Al-Bairuty
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Histopathology studies of metal nanoparticles (NPs) compared to traditional forms of metal in fish are scarce. Additionally, it is unclear whether metal nanoparticles cause greater or different pathologies compared to other forms of metal. The current study aimed to assess the pathological effects of Cu-NPs and TiO2 NPs on rainbow trout via various routes of exposure and, where appropriate, to compare them to either the equivalent dissolved metal salts or bulk powder forms. The first experiment showed that waterborne exposure to Cu-NPs and CuSO4 caused similar types of organ pathologies and alteration in the spleen content, however there were some …
A Comparison Of Carbon Sequestration Potential And Photosynthetic Efficiency In Evergreen And Deciduous Oaks Growing In Contrasting Environments In The Southwest Uk, Demelza Carne
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Global climate change is predicted to alter the weather patterns around the world, as climatic zones shift, forest carbon sequestration projects (e.g. the UK woodland carbon code) need to take into account the specific requirements of planted species. In the UK, oaks are an important charismatic group of trees favoured in recent planting programmes. The English oak (Quercus robur L.), has poor water conservation, but is a major component of natural forests in lowland UK. On the other hand, Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) is a Mediterranean oak that has high water conservation and can also tolerate cold despite being …

This chapter examines literature pertaining to the recruitment of older workers. It begins by addressing the question of relevance and why older worker recruitment matters. It then examines what is known about older workers, including their attitudes, motivations, and behaviors. Next the chapter addresses what employers are looking for in older workers and, more specifically, discusses the continuum of employers’ practices from those that aggressively try to attract and retain older workers and apply a conservation model of older worker management to those that apply a depreciation model and focus primarily on retrenchment and downsizing older employees. Finally, it addresses …
Effects Of Short Term Stretching On Ankle Stiffness And Range Of Motion In People With Multiple Sclerosis, Jodielin Ofori
Effects Of Short Term Stretching On Ankle Stiffness And Range Of Motion In People With Multiple Sclerosis, Jodielin Ofori
School of Health Professions Theses
Hypertonia is seen in 85% of people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) resulting in disability and functional restrictions. Hypertonia can be caused by increases in passive stiffness and enhanced stretch reflexes (spasticity) and is frequently managed clinically using passive stretches. However, the optimal parameters of stretching such as the applied torque and stretch duration remain unclear. During commonly prescribed ankle plantarflexor stretches pwMS produced higher torques when standing in a weight bearing position compared to stretches applied using the upper limbs. Stretches could be held for 120 seconds on average and stretch duration was mainly limited by fatigue. People with higher …

The Use Of Silver Nanoparticles As An Antifungal Coating On Silicone Facial Prosthesis, Zhala Meran
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Abstract Introduction Maxillofacial prostheses are used to substitute lost facial parts, but give variable clinical results due to complications such as contamination and infection. Candida albicans infection remains a significant problem for facial prostheses made of silicone, as the organism causes degradation of the material and infection of the surrounding tissue. This study investigated the antifungal properties of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as a coating on silicone facial prostheses to eliminate infection. Methods The experimental approach used fibroblast cell cultures to test the biocompatibility of Ag NPs and to demonstrate the safety of Ag NPs compared to AgNO3 at concentrations …

Second Language Learnerhood Among Cross-Cultural Field Workers, Thor Andrew Sawin
Second Language Learnerhood Among Cross-Cultural Field Workers, Thor Andrew Sawin
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies second language learnerhood (ideologies about why and how to acquire a target language) among American field workers of a multinational, faith-based development organization, "Love the World". This organizational ethnography is longitudinal, tracking how learnerhood changes across the first years of field service. It is also multi-sited, tracing learnerhood across an assemblage of interconnected nodes. Field workers' learnerhoods are shaped by two larger ideologies of language learning which interact across the nodes of and individual trajectories through Love the World. One ideology, rooted in academic tradition, developmental second language acquisition and modernist missiological theory, valorizes the individual learner …

Black Feminine Identity: An Examination Of Historical And Contemporary Dramatic Texts Through A Critical Race Theory Framework, Devair Jeffries
Black Feminine Identity: An Examination Of Historical And Contemporary Dramatic Texts Through A Critical Race Theory Framework, Devair Jeffries
Theses and Dissertations
Race, class and gender exist as categorizations to distinguish and preserve privilege and identity in the United States of America. These societal constructs of race, class and gender often place African-Americans in comparison or in contrast to White cultural identities. Furthermore, these characteristics differentiate African-Americans as an 'Other;' a categorical group in conflict with dominant White societal values and norms. African-American female playwrights Lorraine Hansberry and Lydia Diamond address established attitudes about race, class, and gender in their plays, A Raisin in the Sun (1959) and Stick Fly (2006) respectively. Their works present strong Black female characters that contend with …

The exact mechanisms that link obesity to CRC risk have not yet been fully established, and only a limited number of animal models are available to study pathways involved in obesity-related colon carcinogenesis. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of HFD-induced obesity on AOM/DSS-mediated colorectal tumorigenesis, tumor proliferation, and symptom severity. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a novel high fat diet, designed to mimic the standard American diet (12 % saturated fat & 28 % unsaturated fat), at 4 weeks of age until 16 weeks …
Adhd And Positive Smoking Expectancies The Role Of Peer Influence As A Moderating Factor, Lauren Dattilo
Adhd And Positive Smoking Expectancies The Role Of Peer Influence As A Moderating Factor, Lauren Dattilo
Theses and Dissertations
Research has demonstrated considerable links between symptoms of ADHD and negative outcomes such as increased risk for cigarette use, which, despite an overall decline, remains a serious public health concern. Cigarette use is often associated with positive expectancies, or ideas about the effects of smoking. While some work on ADHD symptoms has focused on alcohol expectancies, no work has investigated how they might be related to smoking expectancies Other factors, such as susceptibility to peer influence, also remain shallowly explored. The present study is the first to examine interrelations among ADHD symptoms, smoking expectancies, and susceptibility to peer influence. It …
Examining The Differences In Rapport Between Male And Female Cancer Genetic Counselors And Female Clients, John Abernethy
Examining The Differences In Rapport Between Male And Female Cancer Genetic Counselors And Female Clients, John Abernethy
Theses and Dissertations
Genetic counseling is a field in which client-counselor rapport plays a critical role in client satisfaction with the genetic counseling process. One factor that may impact this rapport is gender of the genetic counselor. Previous studies in the field of psychological counseling suggest that gender is not a significant moderator of this rapport. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been published in the field of genetic counseling examining the impact that the gender of the genetic counselor has on client-counselor rapport. To study this effect, an amended version of Horvath & Greenberg's (1989) Working Alliance Inventory tool …
Diffusion Of Csr In Global Business Networks: An Embeddedness Perspective, Valentina Marano
Diffusion Of Csr In Global Business Networks: An Embeddedness Perspective, Valentina Marano
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the role of firm embeddedness in its global business network, relative to the adoption of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices. Global business networks refer to the nexus of inter-firm and intra-firm relationships, in which focal actors are engaged. These networks are focal firm specific, span multiple countries and involve different types of economic relationships between the focal actor and its business partners. This study argues that global business networks affect a focal organization's CSR adoption decisions, since they provide access to resources and information and also channel CSR-related institutional influences from the various countries where the focal …
Assessing Corrosion Damage In Post -Tensioned Concrete Structures Using Acoustic Emission & A Preliminary Investigation Of Biopolymer Doped Cement Mortar For Use In Structural Restoration, Aditya Appalla

Iii-V Nitride Micro- And Nano-Scale Cantilevers For Multimodal Sensing Applications, Ehtesham Bin Quddus
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research trends in chemical and biological sensing have been geared toward developing molecular sensor devices that are fast, label free, miniaturized and portable. The performance of these devices can be dramatically improved by utilizing multimodal detection techniques, new materials and micro-/nanofabrication technologies. This is especially true for micro-/nanoscale cantilever sensors, which undergo changes in mechanical or electrical properties upon the specific binding of molecules. To develop the sensor devices with the above attributes, we utilized III-V nitride materials: InN nanowires for realizing nanoscale cantilevers and AlGaN/GaN heterostuctures with or without embedded HFETs, for developing microcantilevers. There are mainly two …
