Recognizing The Impact Of Personal And Environmental Influences On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Johna S. Brown

Research Papers

Globalization has drastically altered the way humans function. Modern ways of life have induced obesity and type 2 diabetes upsurges on a global level. Type 2 diabetes is a complex chronic illness that can be extremely difficult to prevent and manage. It requires strict consistency in terms of energy consumption, self-assessment, and physical activity. A wide array of variables impact human behavior and one’s ability to abide by such strict regimens. These variables can often be categorized as environmental or personal influences. Comprehensive understanding of these variables can provide insight to diabetics and health professions regarding barriers to diabetes management …

Turing Test As A Defining Feature Of Ai-Completeness, Roman V. Yampolskiy Jan 2013

Turing Test As A Defining Feature Of Ai-Completeness, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The paper contributes to the development of the theory of AI-Completeness by formalizing the notion of AI-Complete, C-Complete and AI-Hard problems. The intended goal is to provide a classification of problems in the field of Artificial General Intelligence. We prove Turing Test to be an instance of an AI-Complete problem and further show certain AI problems to be AI-Complete or AI-Hard via polynomial time reductions. Finally, the paper suggests some directions for future work on the theory of AI-Completeness.

Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Ns-Laser Ablation, David Autrique, Vasilios Alexiades, Harihar Khanal Jan 2013

Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Ns-Laser Ablation, David Autrique, Vasilios Alexiades, Harihar Khanal

Publications

Laser ablation is a versatile and widespread technique, applied in an increasing number of medical, industrial and analytical applications. A hydrodynamic multiphase model describing nanosecond-laser ablation (ns- LA) is outlined. The model accounts for target heating and mass removal mechanisms as well as plume expansion and plasma formation. A copper target is placed in an ambient environment consisting of helium and irradiated by a nanosecond-laser pulse. The effect of variable laser settings on the ablation process is explored in 1-D numerical simulations.

Some Legal Impacts Of The Emerging International Climate Change Regime On Energy Prices, James E. Hickey Jr

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

From the beginning of scientific assessment of climate change in the late 1970’s to the most recent conference of the parties (COP) to the Kyoto Protocol in Doha in 2012 , the international community has been attempting to establish a workable legal regime to deal with climate change. The purpose of this article is to explore some of the legal effects this emerging international climate change regime may have on energy prices in the foreseeable future. Specifically, this article in section II article accepts certain predicates relating to climate change and energy prices. In section III, it lays out briefly …

Who’S Smiling Now?: Disparities In American Dental Health, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

"I am very angry that my son had to lose his life just because we didn't have insurance. . . . My son had to die--12 years old-- because of a tooth." "Dental practitioners credit wealthy baby boomers, reality television makeover shows and new dental technology for the surge in demand." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marriage Equality, Gender Equality, And The Women's Convention, Barbara Stark Jan 2013

Marriage Equality, Gender Equality, And The Women's Convention, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

"Marriage equality" remains an elusive goal in this country. About ten years ago I wrote an article suggesting that private ordering would be a good alternative to the rather haphazard and arbitrary state law governing marriage. Instead, I urged couples to draft their own "marriage proposals." As an example, I attached a "Gender Equity Marriage Proposal." The idea was that "gender equity" might be of some interest to some couples, just as others might be more concerned with a child-centered (or wealth- or environment-centered) model.

I meant well. But my premise was deeply flawed for at least two reasons. First, …

Unprotected Sex: The Pregnancy Discrimination Act At 35, Deborah L. Brake, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2013

Unprotected Sex: The Pregnancy Discrimination Act At 35, Deborah L. Brake, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Thirty-five years ago, Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to overturn a Supreme Court decision refusing to recognize pregnancy discrimination as a form of discrimination based on sex. Now, three and a half decades later, women whose work lives are impacted by pregnancy are again finding themselves unprotected from discrimination. Lower court rulings have eviscerated the Act’s protections at the same time that an expansion of worker rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act should redound to the benefit of pregnant women by expanding the pool of comparators who receive accommodations. By following trends in discrimination law generally - equating …

Breaking The Mold And Picking Up The Pieces: Rights Of Parenthood And Parentage In Nontraditional Families, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern Jan 2013

Breaking The Mold And Picking Up The Pieces: Rights Of Parenthood And Parentage In Nontraditional Families, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The past few decades have shown us myriad ways to form a family. Married couples and their biological offspring no longer define the dominant model, nor do they constitute the majority of domestic arrangements. But while contemporary culture tends to applaud social diversity, we cannot be certain that novel, highly individualized family formation is always consonant with child well-being. Further, courts and legislatures have been slow to acknowledge and accommodate domestic diversity. When judges and lawmakers do confer parental rights on a particular class of individuals, the results are not always equitable or even logical. The era of the traditional …

Supreme Court Recusal: From Marbury To The Modern Day, James Sample Jan 2013

Supreme Court Recusal: From Marbury To The Modern Day, James Sample

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

For Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, controversies pitting personal conflicts — whether actual or merely alleged — against the constitutional commitment to the rule of law increasingly form the basis of a caustic and circular national dialogue that generates substantially more heat than light. While the profile of these controversies is undoubtedly waxing, the underlying tensions stretch back at least to Marbury v. Madison.

For all its seminal import, in Marbury, Chief Justice John Marshall adjudicated a case involving the validity of judicial commissions Marshall had himself signed and sealed. Equally remarkably, one of those judicial commissions belonged to …

The Effects Of Thermal Stress And Algal Competition On The Early Life-History Stages Of Porites Astreoides And The Development Of Stress-Detecting Biomarkers For Use In Scleractinan Corals, Kevin C. Olsen Jan 2013

The Effects Of Thermal Stress And Algal Competition On The Early Life-History Stages Of Porites Astreoides And The Development Of Stress-Detecting Biomarkers For Use In Scleractinan Corals, Kevin C. Olsen

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scleractinian coral populations are declining worldwide in response to numerous stressors operating on both global and regional scales. Rising sea surface temperatures associated with global climate change and the increasing frequency of coral-macroalgae competitive interactions are two of the gravest ecological drivers facing coral reef ecosystems. However, little is known about how these stressors interact to impact corals, their health, and potential modes of population recovery. These threats also highlight the need to develop reliable techniques that detect stress in multiple life-history stages of hermatypic corals prior to the degradation of coral reef habitats. To address these concerns we evaluated …

The Impact Of The Clinical Nurse Leader/Navigator On Clinical Outcomes And Patient Satisfaction, Diane Smith Raines

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In an era of value based purchasing and healthcare reform, hospitals face the challenge of delivering high quality care in an environment of diminishing resources. This performance improvement project describes the use of master’s prepared nurses on medical surgical units to improve quality and patient satisfaction. The setting was five medical surgical units in a 200+ bed hospital in the southeastern United States. Declining resources necessitated an increase in the nurse to patient ratios on the units (from 5:1 to 6:1). The project involved the modification of the model of care through the change in nurse/patient ratios and the addition …

Impact Of Nutritional Status On The Somatotropic Axis And Ghrelin In Phocid Seals, Rachael Dailey

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Metabolic hormones and their axes, including the target tissues and receptors, regulate the tissue specific utilization of nutrients with in the body. The purpose of this research was to understand the hormonal control of complex nutrient partitioning mechanisms involved in young, growing animals. Specifically, this involved the investigation of metabolic hormones and the regulation of growth in two common species of phocids (true seals): harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) and Northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) pups. This longitudinal study examines young phocids from nutritional nadir through realimentation (realimentation) to investigate how metabolic hormones involved in both food intake and nutrient partitioning …

如何提升長者的自我增值能力研究計劃, 香港婦女基金會何郭佩珍耆康中心, Asia-Pacific Institute Of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University 嶺南大學亞太老年學研究中心

APIAS Research Report

The Centre encouraged its member to progress from a recipient of knowledge into a wielder of knowledge, but the reality went contrary to the Centre’s wishes. It was found that the members tended to act as service users …

The Impact Of Transcription And Nucleoid-Associated Proteins On Dna Supercoiling In Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Typhimurium, Andrews Agbleke Jan 2013

The Impact Of Transcription And Nucleoid-Associated Proteins On Dna Supercoiling In Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Typhimurium, Andrews Agbleke

All ETDs from UAB

Bacterial chromosomes are maintained under constant negative supercoiled stress that influences almost all cellular processes including DNA replication, transcription, segregation, site-specific and homologous recombination, and other DNA transposition. The average supercoiling density of the chromosome is generated by gyrase, and supercoil equilibrium is maintained by two other topoisomerases topo I and topo IV. The supercoils generated by gyrase can diffuse over 10 kb domains. The other half of the chromosome's supercoil structure is connected to abundant nucleoid-associated proteins (NAPs). My goal was to characterize factors other than gyrase that participate in generating or regulating supercoil dynamics in Escherichia coli and …

Psychological Effects Of Spiritually Integrated Therapy For Infertile Women, Shiquina Andrews Jan 2013

Psychological Effects Of Spiritually Integrated Therapy For Infertile Women, Shiquina Andrews

All ETDs from UAB

Like other medical conditions, infertility is often unforeseen and difficult to resolve. Though both genders are impacted, women exhibit the most psychological distress following the diagnosis. Among other coping strategies, some women use their religious or spiritual beliefs to cope with the crisis of infertility. While projects investigating the role of spirituality in mental and physical health are growing in momentum, none has integrated religious or spiritual beliefs into a formal psychological intervention for infertile women. This project aimed to evaluate the efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of such a 6-week, phone-based, spiritually-integrated therapy (SIT) program for infertile women. In the …

In this study I revisit the “disintegration hypothesis” of financial assets around a major crisis event. I examine whether the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust and iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund exchange traded funds disintegrate from the ten largest Real Estate Investment Trusts during the 14:45 Flash Crash on May 6, 2010. I find that six of the ten largest REITs are not cointegrated with the Vanguard Real Estate Investment Trust prior to the Flash Crash and that five of the ten largest REITs are not cointegrated with iShares Dow Jones US Real Estate Index Fund prior …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Pre-Announcement Of S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2013

Analysis Of The Effects Of Pre-Announcement Of S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we attempt to answer the question – does the start of pre-announcing of S&P 500 index changes in October 1989 have an effect on the trading pattern of added or deleted firms? We document that prior to October 1989 the excess returns of added or deleted firms follow a white noise process around the event, whereas after the start of pre-announcing the excess returns can be described as nonstationary. This indicates significant excess profits to be captured around the addition or deletion event after S&P started pre-announcing changes in October 1989 but not prior to that date.

The Implications Of Worker Behavior For Staffing Decisions: Empirical Evidence And Best Practices, Tom Tan, Serguei Netessine Jan 2013

The Implications Of Worker Behavior For Staffing Decisions: Empirical Evidence And Best Practices, Tom Tan, Serguei Netessine

IT & Operations Management Research

Employees in service organizations such as restaurants are humans, and their productivity is often heterogeneous due to innate abilities, motivation, and environmental factors. However, none of these considerations are taken into account by typical workforce planning models and software packages. In this paper we describe the results of a study on how workers respond to workload, an integral work environment factor, and we provide operational insights to improve efficiency and strengthen restaurant financials. We study a comprehensive data set from a family-style restaurant chain to clarify how workload, which is defined as the number of tables or diners that a …

Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers Jan 2013

Teaching Government Information In Information Literacy Credit Classes, Emily Rogers

Georgia Library Quarterly

This paper reviews the teaching of credit-bearing information literacy courses and government information, reports questionnaire responses from librarians who teach these courses, and argues that revising the ways we teach government information in for-credit courses will help students achieve information literacy. A focus on government information as critical thinking and subject access resources, rather than as unique documents collections or formats, can remove barriers for researchers, particularly in classes that allow students an entire term to develop skills. In addition, librarians will increase their comfort levels addressing government information and develop ways to teach students to use these resources within …

Development Of An Integrative Commissioning Methodology For New-Building Construction, William L. Gillis Iii Jan 2013

Development Of An Integrative Commissioning Methodology For New-Building Construction, William L. Gillis Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

"Commissioning (Cx) is a quality process for building construction used to verify that the owner's project requirements (OPR) are being met by the final design, construction, and operations and maintenance. The goal is to confirm that each phase of the project is linked back to the OPR through quality assurance methods. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification is an OPR which contributes to difficulties within the design and construction (D&C) process. Though LEED certification is only part of the OPR, too often the design drifts from the OPR and simply focuses on meeting the LEED certification.

Quality function …
