Vowel Production In Mandarin Accented English And American English: Kinematic And Acoustic Data From The Marquette University Mandarin Accented English Corpus, An Ji, Jeffrey J. Berry, Michael T. Johnson
Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications
Few electromagnetic articulography (EMA) datasets are publicly available, and none have focused systematically on non-native accented speech. We introduce a kinematic-acoustic database of speech from 40 (gender and dialect balanced) participants producing upper-Midwestern American English (AE) L1 or Mandarin Accented English (MAE) L2 (Beijing or Shanghai dialect base). The Marquette University EMA-MAE corpus will be released publicly to help advance research in areas such as pronunciation modeling, acoustic-articulatory inversion, L1-L2 comparisons, pronunciation error detection, and accent modification training. EMA data were collected at a 400 Hz sampling rate with synchronous audio using the NDI Wave System. Articulatory sensors were placed …

Speech Sensorimotor Learning Through A Virtual Vocal Tract, Jeffrey J. Berry, Cassandra North, Benjamin Meyers, Michael T. Johnson
Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications
Studies of speech sensorimotor learning often manipulate auditory feedback by modifying isolated acoustic parameters such as formant frequency or fundamental frequency using near real-time resynthesis of a participant's speech. An alternative approach is to engage a participant in a total remapping of the sensorimotor working space using a virtual vocal tract. To support this approach for studying speech sensorimotor learning we have developed a system to control an articulatory synthesizer using electromagnetic articulography data. Articulator movement data from the NDI Wave System are streamed to a Maeda articulatory synthesizer. The resulting synthesized speech provides auditory feedback to the participant. This …

This study examines the relationship between emotional exhaustion-the main component of burnout-and several facets of the Big Five Factors of personality. Previous research has found small relationships between the Big Five Factors and emotional exhaustion. I hypothesized that the facets of trust, cooperation, orderliness, and self-discipline will have curvilinear relationships with emotional exhaustion. The facets of vulnerability and depression were also hypothesized to moderate the curvilinear relationships between orderliness and self-discipline and emotional exhaustion. Regression analyses only found a curvilinear relationship between order and personal burnout when vulnerability was controlled for. A significant quadratic-by-linear interaction was found between order and …

2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant that inhibits immunoglobulin (Ig) expression and Ig heavy (IgH) chain gene transcription. Transcription of the IgH gene involves several regulatory elements including the 3'lgh regulatory region (3'lghRR) which is composed of four enhancers (hs3A, hs1,2, hs4, and hs3B). Dioxin responsive elements (DRE) in the hs4 and hs1,2 enhancers of the 3lghRR that bind the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a ligand-activated transcription factor that regulates dioxin sensitive genes suggest that the 3'lghRR may be a transcriptional target of TCDD. The current study utilized an IgA secreting mouse …

Utility Of A Volume-Regulated Drive System For Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation, Benjamin A. Schmitt
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Direct Mechanical Ventricular Actuation (DMVA) is a non-blood contacting cardiac assist device that augments ventricular function. The purpose of this study was to determine if a volume-regulated "hand pump" drive system and a pressure-regulated "switch tank" drive system provide equivalent levels of cardiac support. Canine (n=2) and swine (n=4) were instrumented for hemodynamic monitoring and intravascular echocardiography. DMVA support was assessed during both severe heart failure and fibrillation. Pump function was evaluated using hemodynamic measures to calculate stroke work. Myocardial function was assessed using echocardiographic speckle tracking to quantify strain rate. Results were compared between groups using paired t-tests. There …

Until the last quarter of the twentieth century it was a commonplace that the various expressions of economic substantive due process we associate with the so-called “Lochner Era” were animated by laissez-faire economics and Social Darwinism. More recent assessments have persuasively rejected this view, observing that the Court as a whole and the justices individually voted to uphold many more instances of government regulation of the economy than they voted to invalidate, and that the closest thing to a Social Darwinist that the Court had to offer was Justice Holmes, on whose polemical dissent in Lochner the …

Patron-Driven Acquisition And Circulation At An Academic Library: Interaction Effects And Circulation Performance Of Print Books Acquired Via Librarians’ Orders, Approval Plans, And Patrons’ Interlibrary Loan Requests, David C. Tyler, Christina D. Falci, Joyce C. Melvin, Marylou Epp, Anita M. Kreps
Patron-Driven Acquisition And Circulation At An Academic Library: Interaction Effects And Circulation Performance Of Print Books Acquired Via Librarians’ Orders, Approval Plans, And Patrons’ Interlibrary Loan Requests, David C. Tyler, Christina D. Falci, Joyce C. Melvin, Marylou Epp, Anita M. Kreps
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Numerous publications on patron-driven acquisition (PDA) for print books and similar materials have reported that patron-requested materials circulate more. Tying circulation to selector may be failing to address the complex of factors that contributes to items’ circulation. In the present study, the authors revisit a PDA program’s data and to determine whether PDA print books’ circulation advantage persists when the potential interactions of several additional variables are taken into account. As with prior studies, library patrons were significantly better predictors of circulation than were librarians or approval plans. However, librarians proved to be significantly better predictors than were approval plans.
Gendered Narratives Of Innovation Through Competition: Lessons From Science And Technology Studies, Scout Calvert
Gendered Narratives Of Innovation Through Competition: Lessons From Science And Technology Studies, Scout Calvert
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Library and information science is a technologically intensive profession with a high percentage of women, unlike computer science and other male-dominated fields. On the occasion of the 2011 Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) conference, this essay analyzes the theme “Competitiveness and Innovation” through a review of social psychology and science and technology studies literature. Both theme concepts have ramifications for library and information science (LIS) education. Librarianship and teaching are both professions that resist commodification because they rely on embodied labor and personal interaction. Competition, as a management or learning style, may not promote meaningful innovation in …
Dirofilariosis In The Americas: A More Virulent Dirofilaria Immitis?, Filipe Dantas-Torres, Domenico Otranto
Dirofilariosis In The Americas: A More Virulent Dirofilaria Immitis?, Filipe Dantas-Torres, Domenico Otranto
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Dirofilarioses are widespread diseases caused by filarioid nematodes (superfamily Filarioidea) of the genus Dirofilaria, which are transmitted by a plethora of mosquito species. The principal agent of canine dirofilariosis in the Americas is Dirofilaria immitis, which may also occasionally infest humans, resulting in pulmonary nodules that may be confounded with malignant lung tumours. Because human cases of dirofilariosis by D. immitis are relatively frequent in the Americas and rare in Europe and other eastern countries, where Dirofilaria repens is the main causative agent, the existence of a more virulent strain of D. immitis in the Americas …

Increasing recognition is being given to the role that employee overall well-being plays in desired outcomes of today’s organizations. To help organizational leaders searching for understanding and answers, we propose that the positive core construct of psychological capital (or simply PsyCap), consisting of the positive psychological resources of hope, efficacy, resiliency, and optimism can be extended into the well-being domain. Although PsyCap has been clearly demonstrated to be related to employee attitudes, behaviors, and performance, linking it with other life domains relevant to overall well-being has yet to be tested. After first building a comprehensive conceptual foundation for extending PsyCap …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is a damaging pest of cultivated corn that was controlled by applications of cyclodiene insecticides from the late 1940s until resistance evolved ~10 years later. Range expansion from the western plains into eastern USA coincides with resistance development. An alanine to serine amino acid substitution within the Rdl subunit of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor confers resistance to cyclodiene insecticides in many species. We found that the nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) G/T at the GABA receptor cDNA position 838 (G/T838) of D. v. virgifera resulted in the alanine to …

Population Dynamics Of Bean Leaf Beetle, Cerotoma Trifurcata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) On Edamame Soybean Plants In Nebraska, Bamphitlhi Tiroesele, Thomas E. Hunt, Robert J. Wright, John E. Foster
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Edamame soybeans are a speciality food item for fresh and processed markets and they are harvested at a physiologically immature (R6) stage. Bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata, is a sporadic pest of soybean in Nebraska, however, its pest status and abundance has increased in the recent years due to an increase in soybean acreage. This was a field experiment aimed at determining the population growth rate of bean leaf beetle on two edamame soybean cultivars, ‘Butterbeans’ and ‘Envy,’ at two planting dates during 2004 and 2005 in Nebraska. The population growth of beetles was significantly higher on 'Butterbeans' than on …

Genetic Diversity And Relatedness Of The Mangrove Rhizophora Mangle L. (Rhizophoraceae) Using Amplified Fragment Polymorphism (Aflp) Among Locations In Florida, Usa And The Caribbean, M. Albrecht, K. M. Kneeland, E. Lindroth, John E. Foster
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Rhizophora mangle L. is a widespread mangrove species in theWestern Hemisphere. Mangrove habitat loss and their importance to coastal and reef ecosystems make greater understanding of their genetic structure useful for conservation and management. An amplified fragment polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was performed on samples from Florida and the Caribbean to discover the genetic structure present. R. mangle had variable genetic diversity not related to latitude; P ranged 7 %–92 %. Some other factor, perhaps human impact, has caused low genetic diversity in some populations. Across Florida R. mangle populations varied in genetic diversity with less diversity (Gst=0.195) and …

Bacillus Thuringiensis: Transgenic Crops, Julie A. Peterson, John J. Obrycki, James D. Harwood
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops, genetically modified to express insecticidal toxins that target key pests of corn, cotton, rice, potato, and other crops, have been rapidly adopted and have become dominant fixtures in agroecosystems throughout the world. Due to the constitutive nature of Bt toxin expression, insecticidal proteins may be found in nearly all plant tissues, presenting multiple sources for Bt toxins to enter the environment, thus creating complex direct and indirect pathways for non-target organisms to be exposed to insecticidal proteins. The environmental impacts of Bt crops have been widely debated, although both benefits and risks do exist. Benefits of …

The European (Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner) and Asian corn borers (Ostrinia furnacalis Guenée) are closely related and display similar sensitivity to Cry1 toxins. In this study, we compared the binding patterns of Cry1Ab and Cry1F toxins between both Ostrinia spp., as well as the expression of putative cadherin and aminopeptidase-N (APN)-like protein receptors. Additionally, cDNA sequences of these putative toxin receptors from both Ostrinia species were compared. Ligand blots for both species indicated a similar binding pattern for Cry1Ab with the strongest immunoreactive band at 260 kDa in both species. In addition, similar expression of the putative cadherin- and …

Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world. Finding effective diagnostic biomarkers in urine or serum would represent the most ideal solution to detecting gastric cancer during annual physical examination. This study was to evaluate the potential of endothelial lipase (EL) as a urinary biomarker for diagnosis of gastric cancer.
Methods: The expression levels of EL was measured using Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining experiments on (tissue, serum, and urine) samples of gastric cancer patients versus healthy people. We also checked the EL levels in the urine samples of other cancer types (lung, colon …

We develop an optimal estimation (OE) algorithm based on top-of-atmosphere reflectances observed by the MODIS satellite instrument to retrieve near-surface fine particulatematter (PM2.5). The GEOS-Chem chemical transport model is used to provide prior information for the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrieval and to relate total column AOD to PM2.5. We adjust the shape of the GEOS-Chem relative vertical extinction profiles by comparison with lidar retrievals from the CALIOP satellite instrument. Surface reflectance relationships used in the OE algorithm are indexed by land type. Error quantities needed for this OE algorithm are inferred by comparison with AOD …

Online Soc And Soh Estimation For Multicell Lithium-Ion Batteries Based On An Adaptive Hybrid Battery Model And Sliding-Mode Observer, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper proposes an adaptive hybrid battery model-based high-fidelity state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) estimation method for rechargeable multicell batteries. The hybrid battery model consists of an enhanced Coulomb counting algorithm for SOC estimation and an electrical circuit battery model. A variable-length sliding window least squares (VSWLS)-based online parameter identification algorithm is designed to estimate the electrical parameters of the electrical battery model, which are then used as the parameters of an adaptive discrete-time sliding-mode observer (ADSMO) for terminal and open-circuit voltage estimation of a battery cell. The error of the SOC estimated from the enhanced …
