Genome-Wide Association Analysis Of Aluminum Tolerance In Cultivated And Tibetan Wild Barley, Shengguan Cai, Dezhi Wu, Zahra Jabeen, Yuqing Huang, Yechang Huang, Guoping Zhang

Publications

Tibetan wild barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. spontaneum), originated and grown in harsh enviroNment in Tibet, is well-known for its rich germpalsm with high tolerance to abiotic stresses. However, the genetic variation and genes involved in Al tolerance are not totally known for the wild barley. In this study, a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) was performed by using four root parameters related with Al tolerance and 469 DArT markers on 7 chromosomes within or across 110 Tibetan wild accessions and 56 cultivated cultivars. Population structure and cluster analysis revealed that a wide genetic diversity was present in Tibetan wild barley. …

A Federalist Blessing In Disguise: From National Inaction To Local Action On Underwater Mortgages, Robert C. Hockett, John Vlahoplus Jan 2013

A Federalist Blessing In Disguise: From National Inaction To Local Action On Underwater Mortgages, Robert C. Hockett, John Vlahoplus

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

While it is widely recognized that the mortgage debt overhang left by the housing price bubble and bust continues to operate as the principal drag upon U.S. macroeconomic recovery, few seem to appreciate just how locally concentrated the problem is. This paper takes the measure of the national mortgage debt overhang problem as a cluster of local problems warranting local action. It then elaborates on one form of such action that the localized nature of the ongoing mortgage crisis justifies - use of municipal eminent domain authority to purchase underwater loans, then modify them in a manner that benefits debtors, …

Predictive Validity Of The Savry Within A Diverse Population Of Juvenile Offenders, Scarlet Paria Woods

Psychology Theses

The current study examined the predictive validity of the SAVRY in African American and White recently adjudicated juvenile offenders in Louisiana. The sample consists of 267 community-based, male juvenile offenders, whom were tracked for an average follow-up period of 18 months. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses on the overall sample and African Americans, specifically, showed the numeric score predicted recidivism. Chi-square analyses found the SRR did not have a significant relationship with reoffending for general recidivism petitions. However, it was significant for all other forms of recidivism in the overall sample and African Americans. Hierarchical Cox regressions identified significant differences …

Awareness At A Threshold: Urban Exchange Through Public Space, Matthew Spears Jan 2013

Awareness At A Threshold: Urban Exchange Through Public Space, Matthew Spears

Architecture Theses and Projects

The moment of arrival becomes an important opportunity for cultural exchange in an urban environment. This exchange can be both the physical exchange between two places or it can be the experiential exchange between two or more disparate groups. These moments of exchange are an elusive experience for visitors as well as residents and are easily forgotten. Expressing the space of the traveler, an interactive space between locals and visitors, can raise cultural awareness between the most prominent groups as well as the marginalized groups, creating a more cohesive urban imaginary. The major exchange hub in Seattle, Washington speaks to …

Humility And Homelessness: A Housing Continuum, Jessica Macdonald Jan 2013

Humility And Homelessness: A Housing Continuum, Jessica Macdonald

Architecture Theses and Projects

The design of a housing continuum in Burlington provides a variety of support environments. These different housing environments are all designed within the downtown area, providing access to public transportation, open part space and employment opportunities. Support services play a huge role in an individual’s process to self-sufficiency. Many social services are already located in the downtown area, however the relationship between living space and support space is important. This thesis introduces three housing typologies as architectural interventions on three under-utilized downtown sites, focusing on the relationship between the individual and the common.

Predicting Sexual Satisfaction From Self-Objectification And Alcohol Consumption, Nicole M. Nelson Jan 2013

Predicting Sexual Satisfaction From Self-Objectification And Alcohol Consumption, Nicole M. Nelson

Psychology Theses

This study was conducted to examine if gender, self-objectification and alcohol consumption were predictors of sexual satisfaction. It was expected that females would self-objectify more than males and self-objectification would negatively relate to satisfaction. It was expected that drinking alcohol would also negatively relate to satisfaction. Undergraduate participants (n=235) who reported a heterosexual sexual encounter within the past three months completed an online survey. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted separately for males and females. It was found that gender was not a predictor of satisfaction; self-objectification did however negatively relate to sexual satisfaction for males and females, and alcohol …

Urban river greenways have the potential to serve as landscapes of civic environmentalism in the American West. Missoula’s urban river corridor is such a landscape. This study seeks to assess the history of Missoula’s urban river corridor, and the degree to which the city’s current urban river greenway meets social and environmental goals. The urban river greenway in Missoula is a successful social undertaking, and its history shows a positive change in the treatment of the river as a healthy landscape feature. In order to explore this concept, historical data was gathered on Missoula’s past relationship to the river, and …

The incidence of hunger in the country gave rise to government mitigation projects. One such endeavor is the Food-for-School Program (FSP). Its major goals are to help feed the poorest families in the Philippines, help them cope up with increasing prices of food and fuel, and provide education to children. Through this program, the government provides a kilo of rice to families suffering from severe hunger. Furthermore, FSP beneficiary families that ensure the regular attendance of their children in the various Department of Education (DepEd) educational institutions are entitled to a free kilo of rice from the National Food Authority …

Over the last decade, evidence has mounted showing that young people with serious mental health conditions experience a variety of challenges as they mature into adulthood. On average, their educational, economic and vocational outcomes are distinctly worse than their peers’, and they are more likely to experience homelessness, to struggle with substance use, and to be involved with corrections systems. In 2009, researchers at the Regional Research Institute at Portland State University applied for and received a grant from the National Institute for Disability Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR, US Department of Education) and the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS, US …

Anytime, Anywhere, Anyplace : Teaching Children What To Do When Everything Goes Wrong, Emily Louis

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Emergencies happen everyday and many children do not have the skills necessary to help themselves in an emergency situation. Many children do not know how to dial 9-1-1 or what to say when they call. Three professionals, one firefighter, one paramedic and one principal, were interviewed on the importance of emergency preparedness for children. The results of those interviews showed that children are not being taught emergency preparedness in schools. Two classrooms, one kindergarten and one fifth grade, at a local elementary school received a thirty-minute lesson on how to handle themselves in an emergency. The kindergarten class learned how …
