Viability Of Butternut (Juglans Cinerea L) In The Northeastern United States: An Assessment Of The Genetic Diversity, Health, And Hybridization And Recruitment Of Butternut In The Northeast, Andre A W Boraks Jan 2013

Viability Of Butternut (Juglans Cinerea L) In The Northeastern United States: An Assessment Of The Genetic Diversity, Health, And Hybridization And Recruitment Of Butternut In The Northeast, Andre A W Boraks

Master's Theses and Capstones

Butternut (Juglans cinerea) trees are being extirpated from their natural range by means of an epidemic caused by a fungal pathogen. Widespread mortality is reminiscent of past epidemics on American chestnut (Castanea dentata) and American elm (Ulmus americana ). Understanding the course of contemporary decline of this tree species will provide greater insight on processes of potential extinction and the results of management to prevent it.

This thesis applies an interdisciplinary approach to characterize butternut of the northeastern Unites States. While there is evidence of weak genetic structuring, butternut appears to have maintained sufficient dispersal to prevent isolation and inbreeding …

Pharmaceutical Policy Process: Lessons From The Newly Independent States, Irina Ghazaryan

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Although the pharmaceutical sector in Armenia is currently mainly established, some challenges still cause a big concern. Such facts as a lack of important policies on pharmaceuticals, an outdated legislation and a lack of regulation suggest that the pharmaceutical policy process in Armenia is not effective enough and its insufficient effectiveness is one of the most important barriers for successful implementation of pharmaceutical reforms in the country. The goal of this capstone was to analyze pharmaceutical policy process in Armenia and other Newly Independent States and to develop recommendations for Armenia. Data and information were obtained from publication searches and …

Trends In The Use Of Preventive Care By Women In The U. S. General Population, Erin Bennett Jan 2013

Trends In The Use Of Preventive Care By Women In The U. S. General Population, Erin Bennett

Open Access Master's Theses

Statement of the Problem: The disease burden of breast cancer remains strong as the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States.1 Despite this, the rate of women receiving a mammogram has shown little improvement since 2000.2 As health insurance will provide expanded coverage for mammography through the Affordable Care Act, it is essential to identify and describe women who have a lower probability of receiving the recommended breast cancer screening.

Objective: To describe trends in receipt of biennial mammography in women in the United States, and to further identify independent sociodemographic and clinical …

Coupled Field Dynamic Model Of Fatigue Evolution, Son Hai Nguyen Jan 2013

Coupled Field Dynamic Model Of Fatigue Evolution, Son Hai Nguyen

Open Access Dissertations

Predicting fatigue life is still an unresolved challenge in engineering practice. One of the problems in developing an effective damage predictive model is that damage variables are hard to measure. In this dissertation, a reliable and practical methodology for estimating damage variables from easily measurable variables is presented and validated by simulations and experiments. The tracking method is based on the application of the smooth orthogonal decomposition and new characteristics of a dynamical system called Characteristic Lengths and Distances. These features which are derived from the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem, are fast to calculate and do not require large data or …

Perceptions Of Mental Illness And Mental Health Policy, Kristen Mcaleenan Jan 2013

Perceptions Of Mental Illness And Mental Health Policy, Kristen Mcaleenan

Psychology Honors Papers

The present study examined people’s implicit and explicit perceptions of mental illness and compared those attitudes to ratings of fairness for psychiatric hospital policies. The sample consisted of 88 participants, from both Connecticut College and Amazon Mechanical Turk. Data were derived from a Hospital Policy Questionnaire created by the researcher, the Perceptions of Dangerousness of Mental Patients (PDMP) scale, as well as 2 Implicit Association Tests assessing General Attitudes and perceptions of Dangerousness. Results showed no significant association between implicit attitudes and judgments of hospital policies, nor between implicit perceptions of dangerousness and judgments of hospital policies. However, explicit perceptions …

The Viability Of Water Privatization In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kelsey Burke Jan 2013

The Viability Of Water Privatization In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kelsey Burke

Economics Honors Papers

Lack of accessible clean water impacts millions of people around the world. Throughout the 1990s, the privatization of developing countries’ water sectors was seen as a way to improve inefficient and ineffective water service. While many of the privatization projects failed, it is important to assess the possibility of learning from these mistakes, and better utilizing private sector support as a tool to address global water deficiencies. I set out to show that water privatization can be an effective tool to address urban water needs if the process is conducted correctly. Through the completion of three case studies, I am …

Psychosocial Factors Predicting First-Year College Student Success, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso, Fred B. Newton, Eunhee Kim, Dan Wilcox

All Faculty Open Access Publications

This study made use of a model of college success that involves students achieving academic goals and life satisfaction. Hierarchical regressions examined the role of six psychosocial factors for college success among 579 first-year college students. Academic self-efficacy and organization and attention to study were predictive of first semester grade point average (GPA) when controlling relevant demographic factors. Academic self-efficacy was even predictive of end-of-year GPA when controlling previous, first-semester GPA. Mediation analyses revealed that first-semester GPA was an important mediator between these two psychosocial variables and end-of-year GPA. Additional psychosocial variables were predictive of college students' life satisfaction: stress …

The Effect Of Ultrasound Stimulation On The Cytoskeletal Organization Of Chondrocytes Seeded In 3d Matrices, Sandra Noriega, Gulnara Hasanova, Anuradha Subramanian Jan 2013

The Effect Of Ultrasound Stimulation On The Cytoskeletal Organization Of Chondrocytes Seeded In 3d Matrices, Sandra Noriega, Gulnara Hasanova, Anuradha Subramanian

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

The impact of low intensity diffuse ultrasound (LIDUS) stimulation on the cytoskeletal organization of chondrocytes seeded in 3D scaffolds was evaluated. Chondrocytes seeded on 3D chitosan matrices were exposed to LIDUS at 5.0 MHz (~15kPa, 51-secs, 4-applications/day) in order to study the organization of actin, tubulin and vimentin. The results showed that actin presented a cytosolic punctuated distribution, tubulin presented a quasi parallel organization of microtubules whereas vimentin distribution was unaffected. Chondrocytes seeded on 3D scaffolds responded to US stimulation by the disruption of actin stress fibers and were sensitive to the presence of ROCK inhibitor (Y27632). The gene expression …

Occupy Information: The Case For Freedom Of Corporate Information, Roy Peled

UC Law Business Journal

Demands for oversight over government operations and the desire for citizens to become more engaged in the democratic process had helped usher in the Freedom of Information Act. This Article argues for extending a similar general duty of disclosure requirement to corporations, because corporations hold pertinent information required for democratic participation. This Article examines the justifications for this general duty of disclosure and reviews existing disclosure mechanisms employ by various countries.

Six Years On And Still Counting: Sifting Through The Mortgage Mess, Robert Hockett Jan 2013

Six Years On And Still Counting: Sifting Through The Mortgage Mess, Robert Hockett

UC Law Business Journal

U.S. primary and secondary real estate and mortgage markets reman one of the principal drags upon economic recovery. Upwards of 12 million new mortgages face foreclosure in the coming six years. The reason for this self-perpetuating slump is exceedingly complex, thanks to the large number of causal factors in play. After identifying the principal interests at stake and the constituencies that hold these interests, this article identifies the impediments thatprevent economic recovery and proposes a solution to remove them. The conclusion reached is that municipalities exercising their eminent domain powers in partnership with investors are best situated to move the …

Defending Patagonia: Mergers Andacquisitions With Benefit Corporations, J. Haskell Murray Jan 2013

Defending Patagonia: Mergers Andacquisitions With Benefit Corporations, J. Haskell Murray

UC Law Business Journal

The timeliness of financial reporting has been an important topic in the accounting literature for decades. There is a trade-off between the timeliness of reporting and the value of the information being reported. Prior to the advent of the internet, reporting had to be done using print media. However, now that many companies post their annual and quarterly reports on the internet, it is possible to report in a more timely fashion than has previously been possible. The problem is that companies in some countries do not make full use of this disclosure tool. They sometimes take many months to …

An Insurance Structure To Encourage Investment In Preventative Health Care, Nicholas Georgakopoulos Jan 2013

An Insurance Structure To Encourage Investment In Preventative Health Care, Nicholas Georgakopoulos

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The incentives for investments in Americans' health are poorly aligned. Health insurers are not sufficiently motivated to invest for the long term. The structure of health insurance does not compensate insurers for investments in lasting health, such as measures preventing chronic disease. If an American changes insurers, the new insurer reaps the benefits of the good health the prior insurer's investment produced. This Essay explores insurers' incentives to invest in health, illustrates how those incentives fail, explores possible improvements, and shows that subsequent insurers should have an obligation to compensate the prior insurer for the averted expenses of expected diseases …
