Trapping The Tigers: Regulation Of Market Entry And The Rule Of Law In Se Asia, Michael Touchton Nov 2013

Trapping The Tigers: Regulation Of Market Entry And The Rule Of Law In Se Asia, Michael Touchton

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent research identifies high barriers to registering a business as critical impediments to economic development around the world. Similarly, the lack of credible commitment to the rule of law – especially in the areas of property rights and contract enforcement – is also connected to economic underdevelopment. Scholarship treats these factors as rival explanations for underdevelopment. However, I argue the rule of law is the causal mechanism through which barriers to entry in the marketplace influence economic outcomes. Specifically, I present evidence perceptions of the rule of law in Southeast Asia decline as the legal restrictions on registering a business …

Public Health Faculty Research and Scholarship

Background: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, with over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. These patients, survivors and their loved ones use the Internet to find information about breast cancer, search for treatment options and connect with support groups. For women in medically underserved areas, especially rural areas, the Internet could be one of their only sources of information.
Objective: The study investigates rural breast cancer patients’ and survivors’ motivations to seek online information, ability to use the Internet as a health information source, barriers to finding the information they …

Feasibility Of Improving Cone-Beam Ct Number Consistency Using A Scatter Correction Algorithm., Jun Li, Weiguang Yao, Ying Xiao, Yan Yu Nov 2013

Feasibility Of Improving Cone-Beam Ct Number Consistency Using A Scatter Correction Algorithm., Jun Li, Weiguang Yao, Ying Xiao, Yan Yu

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

The study was to explore the feasibility of improving cone-beam CT (CBCT) number (corresponding to the Hounsfield units in computed tomography) consistency using a scatter-correction algorithm, with the aim of using CBCT images for treatment planning with density correction. A scatter correction algorithm was applied to a Varian OBI CBCT and an Elekta XVI CBCT, and was evaluated for improving CBCT number consistency. CBCT numbers of phantom materials were compared between images with and without bolus, which introduced additional scatter, and with and without scatter correction processing. It was observed that CBCT numbers were different in the images with and …

Tight Void, Brooke Burns Nov 2013

Tight Void, Brooke Burns

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a memoir that draws on the life experience of two promiscuous women, Brooke and Karen. Both characters come from upper-middle class backgrounds, have extremely similar family lives, and take two very different paths in both their education and sexual behavior. While the women both retain their strong friendship throughout the narrative, eventually, Karen, and her decision to become a prostitute, takes its toll. Though they remain supportive of one another, Karen's lifestyle of sex, drugs, and partying begin to create a disconnect between them. This thesis sheds light on the true nature of female promiscuity: its relation …

Migration Of An E-Learning Model To The Cloud N. Ganesan ©, Nanda Ganesan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

An e-learning model consisting of a course website and multimedia learning modules was developed and implemented initially on a traditional computing platform at a higher learning institution. With the emerging concept of cloud computing, the possibility of using cloud computing resources such as Google Apps, YouTube and SkyDrive to redesign and deploy the e-learning model in the cloud was explored. It was found that the cloud computing resources offered unprecedented opportunity and flexibility to migrate the course website to the cloud and to expand the outreach of the multimedia modules. This paper discusses the migration of the e-learning portal from …

Evaluating Online Forums As A Customer Service Tool For Consumer Products, Kaveepan Lertwachara, Gregg Erickson

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

In this study, we capture communication activities on 14 online forums that are implemented primarily to provide customer service for consumers of mobile phones and MP3 players. We perform a large scale analysis to investigate the social nature and the effectiveness of using online forums as a customer service tool. Unlike previous studies, our research examines a complete archive of the actual communication activities on online forums that are publicly available to general consumers. Our comparative and social network analysis allows us to compare the structural differences among these social networks.

Examining Rate Of Play With Varying Speed And Win Rate On Simulated Slot Machines, Sarah J. Seibring Nov 2013

Examining Rate Of Play With Varying Speed And Win Rate On Simulated Slot Machines, Sarah J. Seibring

Research Papers

When gambling in a casino, there are many factors (other than the games itself) that add to the effects of the experience. The social contingencies have a large influence over the amount a patron will bet and time spent at the casino. Previous studies also show the use of confederates will have an influence over the rate of the observed behavior. Researchers chose to utilize a confederate to gamble and display excitement when a win was reached throughout all sessions. Researchers also manipulated the speed at which the simulated slot machine spins as well as the win rate. These manipulated …

Improving The Efficiency Of Fall Applied N With Cover Crops, Corey Lacey Nov 2013

Improving The Efficiency Of Fall Applied N With Cover Crops, Corey Lacey

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrate loss studies in Midwestern tile-drained fields have found that fall applied nitrogen (N) resulted in elevated nitrate concentrations in tile water during both the corn and soybean year of a 2 year rotation. The effectiveness of cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching when N is spring applied has been well demonstrated, however there is a dearth of knowledge on the ability of cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching in a system where N is fall applied. Thus, the objectives of this research were to (i) investigate the efficacy of winter cover crops to reduce nitrate leaching from fall applied …

Managing Post Contract Variations Under The Principle ‘Traditional’ Irish Forms Of Contract - An Overview, Tony Cunningham Nov 2013

Managing Post Contract Variations Under The Principle ‘Traditional’ Irish Forms Of Contract - An Overview, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

Variations are almost inevitable on all but the most simple of building contracts. This review examines the topic of variations in the context of the ‘traditionally’ procured building contracts in the Republic of Ireland. The study presents definitions of variations as set out in various contracts including the RIAI and GCCC Forms of Contract and identifies common sources of variations on building projects. The study sets out the legal framework supporting the right to vary work, establishes the nature of varied and/or extra work, and discusses the requirements for payment of such work. Variation procedures under the RIAI and GCCC …

Draft Genome Sequences Of Human Pathogenic Fungus Geomyces Pannorum Sensu Lato And Bat White Nose Syndrome Pathogen Geomyces(Pseudogymnoascus) Destructans, Marcus C. Chibucos, Jonatha Crabtree, Sushma Nagaraj

KIP Articles

We report the draft genome sequences of Geomyces pannorum sensu latoand Geomyces (Pseudogymnoascus) destructans. G. pannorum has a larger proteome than G. destructans, containing more proteins with ascribed enzymatic functions. This dichotomy in the genomes of related psychrophilic fungi is a valuable target for defining their distinct saprobic and pathogenic attributes.
