Advocacy For Reproductive Justice In Miami-Dade County Schools: Planning A Campaign To Influence Sex Education Policies, Lisi Lau Nov 2013

Advocacy For Reproductive Justice In Miami-Dade County Schools: Planning A Campaign To Influence Sex Education Policies, Lisi Lau

Capstone Collection

This capstone paper is based on my professional practicum with Mi Lola, a women’s health justice organization based in Miami, Florida. The paper offers a conceptual framework in which Mi Lola approaches women’s health justice and where Mi Lola identifies within the broader women’s reproductive rights movement. It describes the organization’s emphasis on Latinas and women of color when addressing reproductive health concerns of Miami-Dade County through workshops, leadership trainings, advocacy, civic engagement and collective action. Those activities identified a great community concern: the current sex education policies (including the state of Florida’s “abstinence only” policy) appear to be one …

Purpose In Life Predicts Better Emotional Recovery From Negative Stimuli, S. M. Schaefer, J. M. Boyland, C. M. Van Reekum, R. C. Lapate, Catherine Norris, C. D. Ryff, R. J. Davidson Nov 2013

Purpose In Life Predicts Better Emotional Recovery From Negative Stimuli, S. M. Schaefer, J. M. Boyland, C. M. Van Reekum, R. C. Lapate, Catherine Norris, C. D. Ryff, R. J. Davidson

Psychology Faculty Works

Purpose in life predicts both health and longevity suggesting that the ability to find meaning from life’s experiences, especially when confronting life’s challenges, may be a mechanism underlying resilience. Having purpose in life may motivate reframing stressful situations to deal with them more productively, thereby facilitating recovery from stress and trauma. In turn, enhanced ability to recover from negative events may allow a person to achieve or maintain a feeling of greater purpose in life over time. In a large sample of adults (aged 36-84 years) from the MIDUS study (Midlife in the U.S., http://www.midus.wisc.edu/), we tested whether purpose in …

Mental Health Among Northern New Hampshire Young Adults: Depression And Substance Problems Higher Than Nationwide, Karen T. Van Gundy

Carsey Publications

This brief uses data on depressive and substance abuse symptoms from two surveys administered in 2011—the Coös Youth Study and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health—to compare mental health patterns among young adults in Coös County, New Hampshire, to patterns among rural young adults nationwide. The analyses focus on 214 Coös young adults and 1,477 young adult respondents, ages 18 to 21, who were living in non-metropolitan areas in 2011 and who provided usable data on depressive and substance abuse symptoms. Author Karen Van Gundy reports that Coös County young adults are more likely than rural young adults …

Alcohol And Medication Use In Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Understanding The Effect Of Alcohol And Central Nervous System-Acting Medications On The Risk For Falls, Maitreyee Mohanty Nov 2013

Alcohol And Medication Use In Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Understanding The Effect Of Alcohol And Central Nervous System-Acting Medications On The Risk For Falls, Maitreyee Mohanty

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Aging, comorbid conditions, and use of medications render older adults more susceptible to alcohol-disease or alcohol-drug interactions that may lead to harmful outcomes. In this dissertation project the risk profile of alcohol and medications use among older adults was investigated. Considering the rise in CNS-acting medication use and the adverse effect profile linked to CNS-acting medications, it was also of interest to find if older adults were at risk of falling due to interactions between alcohol and CNS-acting medication. Objectives: The objectives were as follows: 1) to determine the prevalence, pattern and factors associated with at-risk drinking, 2) to …

Role Of Intracellular Stochasticity In Biofilm Growth. Insights From Population Balance Modeling., Che-Chi Shu, Anushree Chatterjee, Wei-Shou Hu, Doraiswami Ramkrishna

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

There is increasing recognition that stochasticity involved in gene regulatory processes may help cells enhance the signal or synchronize expression for a group of genes. Thus the validity of the traditional deterministic approach to modeling the foregoing processes cannot be without exception. In this study, we identify a frequently encountered situation, i.e., the biofilm, which has in the past been persistently investigated with intracellular deterministic models in the literature. We show in this paper circumstances in which use of the intracellular deterministic model appears distinctly inappropriate. In Enterococcus faecalis, the horizontal gene transfer of plasmid spreads drug resistance. The induction …

Estimation Du Nombre De Cancers D'Origine Professionnelle Au Québec, France Labrèche, Patrice Duguay, Alexandre Boucher, Robert Arcand Nov 2013

Estimation Du Nombre De Cancers D'Origine Professionnelle Au Québec, France Labrèche, Patrice Duguay, Alexandre Boucher, Robert Arcand

Portraits statistiques

Understanding The Mechanism Of Bacillus Subtilis Spore Germination, Sonali Ghosh Nov 2013

Understanding The Mechanism Of Bacillus Subtilis Spore Germination, Sonali Ghosh

Doctoral Dissertations

Members of Bacillus and Clostridium species sporulate under adverse conditions and the resultant spores can remain metabolically dormant and resistant for years. However, when conditions are favorable, primarily when specific nutrients become available, spores can resume vegetative growth via the process of germination. The overall goal of the work outlined in this thesis is to achieve a better understanding of the process of germination in bacterial spores, since spores are a major concern in food spoilage and food borne diseases as well as in bioterrorism due to Bacillus anthracis spores.

There are two types of germination: nutrient and non-nutrient germination. …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The catchment of the River Thames, the principal river system in southern England, provides the main water supply for London but is highly vulnerable to changes in climate, land use and population. The river is eutrophic with significant algal blooms with phosphorus assumed to be the primary chemical indicator of ecosystem health. In the Thames Basin, phosphorus is available from point sources such as wastewater treatment plants and from diffuse sources such as agriculture. In order to predict vulnerability to future change, the integrated catchments model for phosphorus (INCA-P) has been applied to the river basin and used to assess …
