Success On Their Own Terms : Youths' Perspectives On What It Means To Be Successful In Foster Care., Justin Miller
Success On Their Own Terms : Youths' Perspectives On What It Means To Be Successful In Foster Care., Justin Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Foster care is a fundamental component of the child welfare system. Traditionally, foster care has been viewed as the primary mechanism for caring for children placed outside of their home, and is considered one of the central intervention strategies for child welfare practitioners. Foster care services are regularly recommended for children who are abused and neglected. In 2011, there were an estimated 401,000 youths in foster care and approximately 646,000 youth were served by the foster care system. Yet, despite the importance of foster care to child welfare, social work literature in general, and child welfare literature specifically, is devoid …
Repair Of The Airway Epithelium After Chlorine-Induced Injury., Sadiatu Musah
Repair Of The Airway Epithelium After Chlorine-Induced Injury., Sadiatu Musah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chlorine is a widely used toxic chemical that is considered a chemical threat agent. Chlorine inhalation injures airway epithelium, and efficient epithelial repair is necessary to restore normal lung structure and function. Regeneration of injured tissues typically proceeds through the proliferation and differentiation of stem or progenitor cells. Knowledge of underlying mechanisms that regulate these processes during airway epithelial repair is lacking. This dissertation characterizes respiratory epithelial repair after chlorine injury to investigate potential signaling pathways that could be manipulated to regulate stem/progenitor cells in airway repair. Repair of the pseudostratified tracheal epithelium after chlorine-induced injury was characterized in C57BL/6 …
Sistahs With Voices : Influences That Affected The College Choice Of High-Achieving African American Women Who Chose To Attend A Predominantly White Institution Instead Of An Historically Black College Or University., Angela Denise Duncan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite a long struggle to gain access, African Americans have always highly valued education. Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) were established specifically to educate this group, but the integration of predominately White institutions (PWI) in the 1960s led to decreased HBCU enrollments and, thus, challenges to their continued relevance. The numerous options for higher education add to the complexities of college choice, especially for students who have various intersecting identities to consider (e.g., African American women). The purpose of this study was to discover what influenced eight high-achieving African American women who chose to attend a PWI instead of …
Effect Of Slope And Paver Characteristics On Performance Of Permeable Pavement Gi., Amirhossein Ehsaei 1986-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an experimental study based on the findings of two Green Infrastructure (GI) stormwater control measures (SCMs) in Louisville, KY, which focused on the effects of the physical environment on the performance of GI. The GI installed in Louisville are suffering from extensive and rapid surface clogging and in order to optimize current and future GI, an understanding of the factors affecting the performance of the system is required. The study used the current literature to determine the surrounding factors and those of the permeable surface that had not been investigated enough, and used several configurations of GI …
The Dimerization Of Parotid Secretory Protein., Diana M. Blau
The Dimerization Of Parotid Secretory Protein., Diana M. Blau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: The parotid gland plays an integral part in digestion, immunity, and oral health. Parotid Secretory Protein (PSP, BPIFA2E) is an abundant protein that is secreted into the oral cavity. To understand the unique molecular mechanisms of sorting secretory proteins, structure must be studied. Protein structure is essential in understanding the basis of function. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that PSP in solution forms a dimer. METHODS: Initially, parotid secretory granules were purified from rat parotid glands by using differential centrifugation and crosslinked with formaldehyde. The products were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and Western blot for PSP. Using PCR technology our gene of …
Optimization Models For Resource Allocation Under Perturbation., Dongxue Bridgeman 1986-
Optimization Models For Resource Allocation Under Perturbation., Dongxue Bridgeman 1986-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Optimization Models for Resource allocation are investing in how to make the best use of available but limited resources in order to achieve the best results. In strategic planning, resource allocation is a plan for using available resources, especially in the near future, to achieve the goals of the future. It is a process of allocating resources during the entire planning horizon and among the various units. Resource allocation plans can be decided by using mathematical programming. In this dissertation, the research has been focused on how to allocate resources in the uncertain environment. The mathematical programming formulations for the …

Neighborhoods, Social Capital And Economic Success., Sean M. Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between neighborhoods, social capital and economic success. In the model developed in this research, social capital mediates the relationship between neighborhoods and economic success. Social capital represents social networks with their associated norms and resources and increases economic success by facilitating cooperation and by lowering transaction costs. Neighborhoods affect social capital through local interactions, network exclusion, social learning and social identity processes. An understudied part of these relationships is the existence of endogeneity among the key variables. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, this study uses structural equation modeling to …

Xbp1 And Mist1 Are Not Sufficient To Induce The Regulated Secretory Pathway In Parotid Cell Lines., Ian S. Pyle 1986-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Xerostomia causes oral infections, tooth decay, and hindered digestion. Crucial to oral homeostasis is the salivary proteome. How these proteins are trafficked through secretory cells into secretory pathways is unknown. Abundant in the saliva is Parotid Secretory Protein (PSP), secreted through the regulated secretory pathway. HYPOTHESIS: The addition of XBP-1 and Mist1, known for differentiation marker regulation, to ParC10 cells will improve stimulated secretion of PSP. METHODS: Fusion clones were transiently or stably transfected into ParC10 cells. Media from non-stimulated and stimulated cells was harvested and luciferase activity was assayed. RESULTS: Stimulated secretion of cypridina-PSP was not significantly higher …
Expanding The Ecological Lens In Child Welfare Practice To Include Other Animals, Christina Risley-Curtiss
Expanding The Ecological Lens In Child Welfare Practice To Include Other Animals, Christina Risley-Curtiss
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Sixty-nine million U.S. households have companion animals and most of these families consider these animals to be family members. Research shows that children have powerful emotional connections with animals that can be both beneficial and harmful. Considerable research findings report that violence against animals often co-occurs with, indicates, or predicts other forms of family violence, including child abuse. A companion animal may be an abused child's confidante, and separation from that animal through foster care may be a source of stress and grief for that child. Child welfare agencies are slowly acknowledging some animal-human relationships, especially in regard to animal …

Humans' Bonding With Their Companion Dogs: Cardiovascular Benefits During And After Stress, Rebecca A. Campo, Bert N. Uchino
Humans' Bonding With Their Companion Dogs: Cardiovascular Benefits During And After Stress, Rebecca A. Campo, Bert N. Uchino
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study examined whether having one's companion dog present during and after stress posed similar cardiovascular benefits as having a close friend present, even when the relationship quality for both the companion dog and friend was highly positive. Positive aspects of relationship quality for participants' dog and friend were not associated with one another, suggesting that these relationships exist independently. Additionally, compared to participants with a close friend present, those with their dog present had lower heart rate and diastolic blood pressure (p's < .05) while undergoing the stressors, and tended to have lower heart rate and systolic blood pressure (p's < .09) when recovering from stressors. This study indicates that even when relationship quality is similarly high for companion dogs and friends, dogs may be associated with greater reductions in owners' cardiovascular reactivity to stress, particularly if there is a potential for evaluation apprehension in the human friendships. These findings support the value of the human- companion animal relationship in promoting human welfare.

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Regulation Of Myeloid Antigen Presenting Cell Activity., Kelly Casey Carroll
Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Regulation Of Myeloid Antigen Presenting Cell Activity., Kelly Casey Carroll
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Inflammatory and metabolic processes are critical to the survival of multicellular organisms. Inflammation and metabolism are closely linked, and many pathologies are associated with dysregulation of both of these processes, including obesity, cancer, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. Understanding the mechanistic links of inflammation and metabolism are critical for the development of treatments of metabolic and inflammatory diseases. AMP-activated protein kinase, AMPK, is a serine/threonine kinase that regulates energy homeostasis and metabolic stress in eukaryotes. When cellular ATP is low, AMPK is activated and turns off ATP-consuming anabolic pathways and turns on ATP-generating catabolic pathways. Previous work from our laboratory, as well …

Hope For People Or Hope For Cities? : Hope Vi At Liberty Green., Jelisa Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates how well the goals of local officials align with the stated goals of HOPE VI in the case of the Liberty Green development in Louisville, KY. Research revealed that there it is not necessarily the goals of decision makers that are in conflict, but the stated goals of HOPE VI themselves stand in conflict with one another. Two major components of HOPE VI are in constant tension-the impact on residents and neighborhood development goals. Evidence from this study suggests that most of the emphasis for the Liberty Green HOPE VI development revolves around neighborhood and community development …
The Marriage Effect : An Intergenerational Analysis Of Marijuana Desistance., Rachel Coonce 1983-
The Marriage Effect : An Intergenerational Analysis Of Marijuana Desistance., Rachel Coonce 1983-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis takes a gendered look at the criminological age-graded theory of informal social control, which posits that social bonds are strongly influential in curbing crime and deviance over the course of an individual's life. However, the theory was based on an all-male sample and is therefore not as applicable to women. It is likely that social bonds for men and women have evolved differently over the course of the last century and it is therefore the goal of this study to analyze how these changes are operating within this informal social control theory. Specifically, this paper analyzes marriage and …
Privatization And Ethical Implications For Public Managers., Eric Dennison 1979-
Privatization And Ethical Implications For Public Managers., Eric Dennison 1979-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This Thesis is an examination of privatization and the ethical implications for public managers. It begins with a historical overview of public administration, followed by discussion of the ethical concerns. Case studies show private companies have gained an upper hand in contract negotiations, and public managers have failed to keep the public trust by offering long term contracts that result in monopolies from closed or no bid contract systems. The thesis addresses ways to improve ethical decision making through better regulations and teaching. As privatization becomes a more viable way to pay for government services, the public administrator must maintain …

Are Supervisory Feedback Messages A Motivational Factor To Enhance Employee Retention?, Yang Yali
Are Supervisory Feedback Messages A Motivational Factor To Enhance Employee Retention?, Yang Yali
Masters Theses
Employee retention is one of most valuable resources in an organization. Feedback from supervisors provides opportunities to clarify expectations, adjust goal difficulty, improve job performance, and enhance job satisfaction. The present study is intended to investigate the role that supervisory feedback messages play in employee retention decisions. The participants took a three-session survey that aimed to examine their perception of supervisory feedback received through direction-giving messages, empathy-giving messages, and meaning-making messages, as well as the effect that each kind of message had on each participant's retention intent. The follow-up interviews were conducted to explore in-depth insights on the factors motivating …
Restricting Testamentary Freedom: Ex Ante Versus Ex Post Justifications, Daniel B. Kelly
Restricting Testamentary Freedom: Ex Ante Versus Ex Post Justifications, Daniel B. Kelly
Fordham Law Review
The organizing principle of American succession law—testamentary freedom—gives decedents a nearly unrestricted right to dispose of property. After surveying the justifications for testamentary freedom, I examine the circumstances in which it may be socially beneficial for courts to alter wills, trusts, and other gratuitous transfers at death: imperfect information, negative externalities, and intergenerational equity. These justifications correspond with many existing limitations on the freedom of testation. Yet, disregarding donor intent to maximize the donees’ ex post interests, an increasingly common justification for intervention, is socially undesirable. Doing so ignores important ex ante considerations, including a donor’s happiness, a donor’s incentive …
Agency Settlement Reviewability, Dustin Plotnick
Agency Settlement Reviewability, Dustin Plotnick
Fordham Law Review
Administrative agency settlements have recently come under increased judicial scrutiny. Agency actions are presumptively reviewable under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), which means they are generally subject to, among other requirements, “arbitrary and capricious” review under 5 U.S.C. § 706(2) and Motor Vehicles Manufacturing Ass’n of the United States v. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. In contrast, the U.S. Supreme Court held in Heckler v. Chaney that agency no–action decisions are presumptively unreviewable because they are “committed to agency discretion by law” under 5 U.S.C. § 701(a)(2). Are agency settlements also presumptively unreviewable? In other words, are they more …

Mental Health / Substance Use Disorders
Telemental health has long been promoted in rural areas to address chronic access barriers to mental health care. While support and enthusiasm for telemental health in rural areas remains quite high, we lack a clear picture of the reality of telemental health in rural areas, compared to its promise. This Research & Policy Brief reports on the first part of our study—the online survey of 53 telemental health programs—and describes the organizational setting, services provided, and the staff mix of these programs. We draw from our telephone interviews with 23 of these programs to help describe the organizational context of …

Department of Nursing papers and presentations
There are inconsistencies in treating inpatients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP) and providing adequate post discharge follow-up contributing to significant hospital re-admission rates and increased healthcare costs. Will the use of a pneumonia pathway decrease hospital re-admissions and healthcare costs? Our null hypothesis for this study was that the use of a pneumonia care pathway will have no significant effect on hospital readmission rates.

Much research exists that discusses the benefits of dual language education (DLE) as well as the political, historical and social factors involved in the implementation (or lack of) of DLE in the United States. However, little attention has focused on how these programs are presented in media discourse. This study aims to fill this gap by examining media discourse and how DLE is currently relayed to the public. Twenty-nine online articles from US news sources were collected and analyzed as regards linguistic strategies used in media discourse of DLE. Findings reveal the prevailing metaphors used in multilingual/monolingual discourse to be …

Glucocorticoids Induced Allergic Reaction, Emad Uddin Siddiqui, Shakeel Ahmed
Department of Emergency Medicine
Glucocorticoids can cause allergic reaction in rare cases. A ten year old boy, known asthmatic, was treated with intramuscular injection of glucocorticoids, followed by nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. His lips turned pale along with palpitation and light headache. His right eye lid and lower lip were swollen. Heart rate was 177/min, and BP was 66/46 mmHg,. Patient spontaneously improved and symptoms resolved. IV fluids bolus, antihistamines or epinephrine were not required. The case was seen in September 2012.
