Effects Of Water Availability And Pest Pressures On Tea (Camellia Sinensis) Growth And Functional Quality, Selena Ahmed, Colin M. Orians, Timothy S. Griffin, Sarabeth Buckley, Uchenna Unachukwu, Anne Elise Stratton, John Richard Stepp, Albert Robbat Jr, Sean Cash, Edward J. Kennelly

Publications and Research

Extreme shifts in water availability linked to global climate change are impacting crops worldwide. The present study examines the direct and interactive effects of water availability and pest pressures on tea (Camellia sinensis; Theaceae) growth and functional quality. Manipulative greenhouse experiments were used to measure the effects of variable water availability and pest pressures simulated by jasmonic acid (JA) on tea leaf growth and secondary metabolites that determine tea quality. Water treatments were simulated to replicate ideal tea growing conditions and extreme precipitation events in tropical southwestern China, a major centre of tea production. Results show that higher water availability …

Discursive Narrative Analysis: A Study Of Online Autobiographical Accounts Of Self-Injury, Olga Sutherland, Andrea V. Breen, Stephen P. Lewis Dec 2013

Discursive Narrative Analysis: A Study Of Online Autobiographical Accounts Of Self-Injury, Olga Sutherland, Andrea V. Breen, Stephen P. Lewis

The Qualitative Report

This article offers an innovation in narrative analysis afforded by incorporating analytic concepts from discourse analysis. We share some examples from our study of online autobiographical accounts of non - suicidal self - injury (NSSI) to illustrate the various aspects of a discursive narrative approach to research. We show how the participants construct events and experiences as sequentially linked and temporarily related using a range of discursive practices and devices, including producing contrasting descriptions of emotional states, using figurative language, vivid or vague descriptions, and extreme case formulations. The specific way in which experience was constituted as sequentially and causally …

Special Education Teachers' Perspectives On The Implementation Of Functional Behavior Assessment In Schools, Joy Engstrom Dec 2013

Special Education Teachers' Perspectives On The Implementation Of Functional Behavior Assessment In Schools, Joy Engstrom

Theses and Dissertations

The presence of challenging and violent behaviors that pose risks to the overall safety and the educational learning experience in the public education setting have been on the rise in recent years. Traditional reactive, coercive, and punitive measures to address these behaviors have been futile. Congress responded to the national increase in violent behaviors by implementing several acts, including zero tolerance policies, in an effort to diminish the rise in violent behaviors. Of significance to this study was the inclusion of Functional Behavior Assessment in the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 1997. Unfortunately, FBA has the …

Maternal Monitoring And Maternal Psychological Well-Being: Important Components In Treating Conduct Disorder, Benjamin Rosen Dec 2013

Maternal Monitoring And Maternal Psychological Well-Being: Important Components In Treating Conduct Disorder, Benjamin Rosen

Theses and Dissertations

Conduct disorder is characterized by behaviors that take a large toll on the individuals, families, and communities afflicted. Thus, improving treatment effectiveness should be a high priority. Currently, common intervention programs do not address parental depression, even though it has been linked to adolescent conduct disorder behaviors in some studies. The current study assessed whether the relation between maternal depression and adolescent conduct disorder behaviors is mediated by another factor which has been linked to conduct disorder behaviors, maternal monitoring. Results did not support the hypothesized mediated association, but did show significant individual associations for both maternal depression and maternal …

Regulation Of Satiety Quiescence: Cyclic Gmp, Tgf Beta, And The Asi Neuron, Thomas Gallagher Dec 2013

Regulation Of Satiety Quiescence: Cyclic Gmp, Tgf Beta, And The Asi Neuron, Thomas Gallagher

Theses and Dissertations

The worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a well-studied model organism in numerous aspects of its biology. This small free living nematode has less than 1,000 cells, but shows clear conservation in both signaling and behavior to mammals in aspects of appetite control. This is of importance to humans, where failure of appetite control is a major factor in the unprecedented obesity epidemic that we see today. In general, worm behavior reflects its internal nutritional state and the availability and quality of food. Specifically, worms show a behavioral state that mimics aspects of the mammalian behavioral satiety sequence, which has been termed …

Environmental- And Ethanol-Induced Effects On Reference And Short-Term Memory In The Rat, Kimberly Ramos Dec 2013

Environmental- And Ethanol-Induced Effects On Reference And Short-Term Memory In The Rat, Kimberly Ramos

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Environmental enrichment (EE) is a combination of complex physical and social stimulation beyond that which would be received in standard or isolated laboratory housing. Continuous enrichment paradigms have been shown, among other influences, to increase neurogenesis and dendritic branching, and enhance learning and memory. Recently, the preventative effects of enrichment have been considered, specifically relating to drugs of abuse (Solinas, Thiret, Chauvet, & Jaber 2010; Stairs & Bardo 2009). This series of studies examined the effects of daily EE on reference memory and short-term memory, as assessed in the radial arm water maze (RAWM) and Morris water maze (MWM). Sprague-Dawley …

Unanswered Occupational Calling: The Development And Validation Of A New Measure, Michele Wilk Gazica Dec 2013

Unanswered Occupational Calling: The Development And Validation Of A New Measure, Michele Wilk Gazica

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a limited body of research that illuminates the various positive life-, health-, and work-related outcomes that an individual may experience through the pursuit of his or her occupational calling. An occupational calling is defined as an occupation that a person feels drawn to, finds intrinsically enjoyable and meaningful, and identifies as a central part of his or her identity. The extant literature on occupational callings, however, rarely considers the possible detrimental effects of having an occupational calling other than to explain unexpected study results. These unexpected study results hint at adverse psychological and job-related outcomes when an individual …

The Relationship Between Household Economic Resources And Youth Academic Performance In Ghana: A Multilevel Structural Equation Modeling, David Ansong

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The Government of Ghana recognizes the importance of education for improving the socioeconomic well-being of young Ghanaians and the development of the nation. Education currently accounts for the largest share: 31%) of Ghana's national budget: GNA, 2012). Educational reforms and investments have had remarkable success in improving access to education up to the Junior High School: JHS) level, but progression beyond JHS remains a challenge. More than half of JHS graduates do not gain admission into Senior High School: SHS) because of poor academic performance and the inability of those who qualify to afford the drastic increase in educational costs. …

Growth, Development, And The Natural Resource Curse: Understanding The Asymmetric Gains Of Trade, Low Iishan Dec 2013

Growth, Development, And The Natural Resource Curse: Understanding The Asymmetric Gains Of Trade, Low Iishan

Student Scholarship - College of Business

Trade is an essential component of a country’s economy. The flow of goods and services across national boundaries has become emblematic of the modern global economy. Yet, the effects of trade are not constant across countries. Instead, gains from trade have been observed to be asymmetric across the diverse landscape of political economies. Sharma and Morrissey (2005) for example, suggest that while trade liberalization is generally desirable, it does not guarantee growth. Instead, any impact of trade on an economy is conditional upon the initial economic structure and prevailing policy. This makes sense since countries often differ in terms of …

Don’T Judge The S&P 500 By Its Cover: When Expectations Meet Regression, Daniel Freitag

Student Scholarship - College of Business

This study aims to answer whether the health of the United States equities market is a representation of the well-being of the macro-economy. There are two primary goals in this study. The first is to model the determinants of fluctuating stock prices in the short-run. For this reason, data is collected in monthly units intended to represent short-term fluctuations in the S&P price over time. The second is to model the expected impact of recessionary pressures on the performance of equities.

Pacific Coast Producers: Picked And Canned At The Peak Of Ripeness, Alondra Bains, Brandon Hunt, Amanda Nichols, Xavier Rodriquez

Case Studies in Agribusiness

Pacific Coast Producers is a cooperative which processes, packs and ships tomatoes, peaches, pears and grapes. It started in 1971, when the bankruptcy of U.S. Products forced ten ranchers to look for a new outlet for their produce. They have since grown into a major co-packer, supplying over 5,000 labels for retailers across the U.S. As a California based packer, they face a number of issues, including environmental concerns, labor shortages and water supply reliability. However, their long-term outlook is positive

Recent Income Trends For Top Executives: Evidence From Tax Return Data, Seth H. Giertz, Jacob A. Mortenson Dec 2013

Recent Income Trends For Top Executives: Evidence From Tax Return Data, Seth H. Giertz, Jacob A. Mortenson

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

We examine income trends for top executives, focusing on the years 2000 to 2010, with special emphasis on the period surrounding the Great Recession. First, we merge Execucomp executive compensation records with IRS tax records. We compare incomes from our Execucomp sample to top incomes reported by Piketty and Saez (2003). We disaggregate executive income trends by industry, showing which industries are driving the divergence in top executive incomes. We compare our results to findings from Bakija, Cole, and Heim (2010) and Kaplan and Rauh (2010), who examine trends in top incomes for broad occupation and industry categories for years …

Economic Challenges Facing Kentucky’S Electricity Generation Under Greenhouse Gas Constraints, Energy And Environment Cabinet, Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Department Of Statistics, University Of Kentucky, Center For Applied Energy Research, University Of Kentucky, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Statistics Reports

From the preface:

For the Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC), which has primacy in administering most federal environmental laws and regulations at the state level, we have to understand the implications of what is arguably one of the most challenging issues to confront us—greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their impact on climate change. Efforts to reduce GHG or carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have moved beyond the point of discussion at the national level, and the United States Supreme Court has ruled that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the authority to regulate GHG emissions. Furthermore, while public …

Fabrication And In Vivo Thrombogenecity Testing Of Nitric Oxide Generating Artificial Lungs, Kagya Amoako, Patrick Montoya, Terry C. Major, Ahmed B. Suhaib, Hitesh Handa, David O. Brant, Mark E. Meyerhoff, Robert H. Bartlett, Keith E. Cook

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

Hollow fiber artificial lungs are increasingly being used for long-term applications. However, clot formation limits their use to 1–2 weeks. This study investigated the effect of nitric oxide generating (NOgen) hollow fibers on artificial lung thrombogenicity. Silicone hollow fibers were fabricated to incorporate 50 nm copper particles as a catalyst for NO generation from the blood. Fibers with and without (control) these particles were incorporated into artificial lungs with a 0.1 m2 surface area and inserted in circuits coated tip-to-tip with the NOgen material. Circuits (N = 5/each) were attached to rabbits in a pumpless, arterio-venous configuration and run for …
