The Effect Of Protein Timing On Muscle Strength And Hypertrophy: A Meta-Analysis, Brad Jon Schoenfeld, Alan Albert Aragon, James W. Krieger Dec 2013

The Effect Of Protein Timing On Muscle Strength And Hypertrophy: A Meta-Analysis, Brad Jon Schoenfeld, Alan Albert Aragon, James W. Krieger

Publications and Research

Protein timing is a popular dietary strategy designed to optimize the adaptive response to exercise. The strategy involves consuming protein in and around a training session in an effort to facilitate muscular repair and remodeling, and thereby enhance post-exercise strength- and hypertrophy-related adaptations. Despite the apparent biological plausibility of the strategy, however, the effectiveness of protein timing in chronic training studies has been decidedly mixed. The purpose of this paper therefore was to conduct a multi-level meta-regression of randomized controlled trials to determine whether protein timing is a viable strategy for enhancing post-exercise muscular adaptations. The strength analysis comprised 478 …

A Comparison Of Evidence Fusion Rules For Situation Recognition In Sensor-Based Environments, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye Dec 2013

A Comparison Of Evidence Fusion Rules For Situation Recognition In Sensor-Based Environments, Susan Mckeever, Juan Ye

Conference papers

Dempster-Shafer (DS) theory, and its associated Dempster rule of combination, has been widely used to determine belief based on uncertain evi-dence sources. Variations to the original Dempster rule of combination have appeared in the literature to support particular scenarios where unreliable results may result from the use of original DS theory. While theoretical explanations of the rule variations are explained, there is a lack of empirical comparisons of the DS theory and its variations against real data sets. In this work, we examine several variations to DS theory. Using two real-world sensor data sets, we com-pare the performance of DS …

Robust Modeling Of Epistemic Mental States And Their Applications In Assistive Technology, A K M Mahbubur Rahman Dec 2013

Robust Modeling Of Epistemic Mental States And Their Applications In Assistive Technology, A K M Mahbubur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation presents the design and implementation of EmoAssist: "Emotion-Enabled Assistive Tool to Enhance Dyadic Conversation for the Blind". The key functionalities of the system are to recognize behavioral expressions and to predict 3-D affective dimensions from visual cues and to provide audio feedback to the visually impaired in a natural environment. Prior to describing the EmoAssist, this dissertation identifies and advances research challenges in the analysis of the facial features and their temporal dynamics with Epistemic Mental States in dyadic conversation. A number of statistical analyses and simulations were performed to get the answer of important research questions about …

Propensity Score Methods In Estimating Conditional Hazard Ratio, Wen Feng Dec 2013

Propensity Score Methods In Estimating Conditional Hazard Ratio, Wen Feng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Various simulations have been done to demonstrate how propensity score methods perform in estimating mean difference, proportion, odds ratio and marginal hazard ratio, however, few rigorous simulations have been done to evaluate the performance. We conduct an extensive series of simulations to demonstrate the performance of propensity score methods in estimating conditional hazard ratio. For each propensity method, we characterize the conditions to 7 propensity score scenarios, each contains a different set of variables. For each scenario, we apply four propensity methods to estimate conditional hazard ratio. Meanwhile, we also use multivariate Cox model (conventional Cox model) to estimate conditional …

Infant Volubility Across Circumstance Estimated From All-Day Recordings, Barbara S. Franklin Dec 2013

Infant Volubility Across Circumstance Estimated From All-Day Recordings, Barbara S. Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

By analyzing infant volubility we may illuminate early communication development and aid early identification of disorders. LENA recordings provide a naturalistic method for gathering data all-day and yield automated labeling of speakers including the infant wearing the device. In Study 1, 10 six-month-old infants were studied for volubility in a naturalistic setting analyzed by LENA and a human coder using a traditional repeat-listening method based on a single all-day recording for each infant. Twelve randomly selected 5-minute segments (excluding presumed sleep) were coded for vocal type (vocants, squeals, and growls). This allowed for estimation of six-month-old infant vocal rate across …

The Moderating Effect Of Employee Age On The Association Between Affective Commitment And Human Resource Practices, Michael Mark Mackay Dec 2013

The Moderating Effect Of Employee Age On The Association Between Affective Commitment And Human Resource Practices, Michael Mark Mackay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Drawing hypotheses from a theory of lifespan development called selective optimization with compensation (SOC, Baltes & Baltes, 1990; Baltes, Staudinger, & Lindenberger, 1999), the study explored the degree to which employee age moderates the relationship between employee affective commitment and satisfaction with various high commitment human resource practices (HCHRPs; e.g., providing training, opportunity for advancement, work/life balance). In addition, as exploratory hypotheses, the study also tested whether other employee-level variables such as gender, job tenure, and job type also serve as moderators of the HCHRP-affective commitment relationship. Customer-facing employees (N = 6,360) representing three job types (O*NET titles: Shipping, Receiving, …

Extreme Heat Awareness And Protective Behaviors In New York City, Kathryn Lane, Katherine Wheeler, Kizzy Charles-Guzman, Munerah Ahmed, Micheline Blum, Katherine Gregory, Nathan Graber, Nancy Clark, Thomas Matte

Publications and Research

Heat waves can be lethal and routinely prompt public warnings about the dangers of heat. With climate change, extreme heat events will become more frequent and intense. However, little is known about public awareness of heat warnings or behaviors during hot weather. Awareness of heat warnings, prevention behaviors, and air conditioning (AC) prevalence and use in New York City were assessed using quantitative and qualitative methods. A random sample telephone survey was conducted in September 2011 among 719 adults and follow-up focus groups were held in winter 2012 among seniors and potential senior caregivers. During summer 2011, 79 % of …
