Faculty-buy in is an essential component of successful technology integration processes at the Higher Education level. The goal of this case study was to assess the University faculty's role in the utilization of Challenge Based Learning while teaching undergraduate students. Did the University have the faculty's support and buy-in concerning the use of Challenge Based Learning as a campus-wide initiative? The perspectives of 16 full-time University faculty members enrolled in a Challenge Based Learning pilot study were explored at the beginning of the Challenge Based Learning pilot and then and were assessed again upon the completion of the pilot. The …

The Role Of Sports Clubs In University Recruitment And Retention: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Andrea R. Mcclymont
The Role Of Sports Clubs In University Recruitment And Retention: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Andrea R. Mcclymont
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Opportunities for involvement on a college campus can have many positive effects on students. Additionally, opportunities for involvement can have positive implications for student recruitment and retention at a university. There are many ways for students to become involved during college through their campus recreation centers. Through these centers students can have the opportunity to participate in sport clubs. Although multiple studies have been conducted on the importance of student involvement, few studies focus specifically on student involvement in sport clubs. This study addressed six research questions: a) do freshmen student sport club participants have higher 1st term GPAs …

"Effects Of A Specific Acetylcholine Receptor Agonist In A Rat Glaucoma Model", Maha Alfaidi
"Effects Of A Specific Acetylcholine Receptor Agonist In A Rat Glaucoma Model", Maha Alfaidi
Honors Theses
PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of a specific nicotinic ACh agonist, PNU-282987, on the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in a rat glaucoma model. A time-dependent study using 2 mM PNU-282987 was performed to determine the neuroprotective effect in the vertebrate retina.
METHODS: Hypertonic saline solution (2M NaCl) was injected into the episcleral vein of the rat’s eye to reduce the numbers of RGCs and mimic the effect of glaucoma. In one set of studies, PNU-282987 was applied to the right eye of each experimental animal as eye drops in combination with the NaCl …
The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
For the past ten years, childhood bullying has been heavily discussed in public discourse, through increased news reporting, discussion in awareness campaigns, and court proceedings. The characterization of bullying in the media is symptomatic of this discourse; moreover, it reflects the social construction of bullying. In particular, news media’s emotional and scientific portrayal of bullying has inspired criminalization of the act and defined bullying as a normative trend of deviant behavior—a marked difference from its previous portrayal as an isolated but treatable act. In this paper, I report the findings from a content analysis of articles from mainstream U.S. news …
An Experimental Test Of Culturally Specific Versus Standard Smoking Cessation Messages Targeting Hispanics, Denise Rodríguez Esquivel
An Experimental Test Of Culturally Specific Versus Standard Smoking Cessation Messages Targeting Hispanics, Denise Rodríguez Esquivel
Open Access Dissertations
Culturally specific smoking cessation interventions have been recommended for racial/ethnic minority smokers in the U.S., though few cessation trials have focused on Hispanics. As a result, little is known about effective intervention delivery or factors that should be considered. The aims of this study were to test the acceptability and efficacy of a smoking cessation intervention varying in cultural specificity and language. Participants (N = 222) were English-Spanish bilingual Hispanic smokers recruited from the community. A 2 (Language: preferred vs. less preferred) X 2 (Intervention type: standard vs. culturally specific) between-subjects experiment was conducted. Language preference was assessed, and participants …
Towards On-Site Detection Of Nucleic Acids For Pathogen Monitoring, Daohong Zhang
Towards On-Site Detection Of Nucleic Acids For Pathogen Monitoring, Daohong Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
As a leading cause of death in developing countries and a persistent problem elsewhere, pathogenic organisms are as ubiquitous as they are dangerous. Significant worldwide resources are directed toward their detection and eradication, leading to a broad coalition of government agencies, healthcare providers, academic researchers, and food manufacturers dedicated to providing the best-available prevention strategies for mitigating exposure risk. At the forefront of this effort is the field of pathogen detection. Our work directly addresses the current lack of simple, rapid, sensitive, and selective pathogen detection methods needed for frontline intervention in the most at-risk populations. To begin, we focused …

Diffusion Of Innovation: The Introduction Of A Point-Of-Use Ceramic Water Filter To South Texas Colonia Residents, Sara A. Buentello
Theses and Dissertations
People living in South Texas colonias continue to face developing world living conditions. Many residents of the colonias still live without basic and fundamental utilities including running water in their homes. Worldwide lack of access to clean running water is a major social problem and found in new colonias. Research has found that point-of-use ceramic water filters (CWFs) are a viable and cost effective way to purify water and developing countries throughout the world use them today. This study employs Everett Rogers’s 1964 Diffusion of Innovation Theory. Rogers’s theory has been applied in countless studies to analyze the processes through …
Cultural Predictors Of Academic Motivation In Hispanic College Students, Laura Yvette Mendez
Cultural Predictors Of Academic Motivation In Hispanic College Students, Laura Yvette Mendez
Theses and Dissertations
Latinos make up 16 percent of the overall U.S. population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010); however, in 2012, they only represented 9 percent of individuals obtaining a college degree (NCES, 2012). Several studies suggest that social-cultural factors (i.e. familismo, parental involvement, acculturation, etc.) play a significant role in the academic motivation and academic success of Latino students (Jeynes, 2003; Perez et al., 2009; Perna & Titus, 2005). This study explored the extent to which familismo, parental involvement, and academic motivation are related to one another. This study also explored the extent to which parental involvement and familismo predict academic motivation in …
How Intrinsic Motivation And Extrinsic Motivation Affect Organizational Commitment And Job Satisfaction: A Cross-Cultural Study In The United States And China, Yundong Huang
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation research is designed to identify how an individual’s work motivation affects his/her organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Work motivation is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The three components of organizational commitment proposed by Meyer and Allen are examined separately. This study is a cross-cultural study based on data collected from the United States and China. The data are analyzed using partial least square (PLS) based structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of the SEM analysis are compared between the US and the China sample. The results of this study show that intrinsic motivation is positively associated with …

Blogging the Library
If blowout sales bring crazed shoppers to department stores on Black Friday and the perfect 75⁰ day draws people outside to enjoy the fresh air, then what brings the students to the library? With countless books, journals, and videos available at the click of a button, it might be easy or obvious to suppose that the library building would be an empty space gathering dust. It might be surprising, but quite the opposite is true. What makes a college library appealing? How can the academic library, as a place, continue to be important to the life of campus? [excerpt …

Developing A Mobile Audiometric Sound Booth Application For Apple Ios Devices, Luke J. Brook, Patricia A.H. Williams
Developing A Mobile Audiometric Sound Booth Application For Apple Ios Devices, Luke J. Brook, Patricia A.H. Williams
Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference
Hearing loss in Australian children, particularly those in rural and remote areas, is a growing health concern. Resultant deafness has significant impact on the educational and social development of such children. Whilst telehealth had provided other benefits for rural and remote areas, the absence of suitable testing equipment and associated healthcare specialists has meant that there is a gap in this area of child health that could be addressed using a mobile solution. This paper discusses the research and development of a mobile application for testing and diagnosis of hearing loss in children. It is unique in its ability to …

The Applicability Of Iso/Iec27014:2013 For Use Within General Medical Practice, Rachel J. Mahncke
Australian eHealth Informatics and Security Conference
General practices are increasingly cognizant of their responsibilities in regards to information security, as is evidenced by professional bodies such as the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) who publish the Computer and Information Security Standards (CISS) for General Practices. Information security governance in general medical practice is an emerging area of importance. As such, the CISS (2013) standard incorporates elements of information security governance. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) released a new global standard in May 2013 entitled, ISO/IEC 27014:2013 Information technology -- Security techniques -- Governance of information security. The release of this revised ISO standard, …

Not only is Hepatitis B serology often misunderstood because of its complex serological implications, but advances in medical science have revolutionised screening and treatment of hepatitis B. To maximise such evolution however, this new information must be relayed effectively and efficiently to current and future medical professionals. Cartoons have been well regarded as a teaching tool in a variety of different settings as is the use of web based technology. Therefore the delivery of a cartoon based learning tool, accessed via on-line learning modules was considered a novel and potentially effective way of disseminating new knowledge. To increase health professionals’ …
The Syrian Calling: Western Jihad Recruitment And Martyrdom, Robyn Torok
The Syrian Calling: Western Jihad Recruitment And Martyrdom, Robyn Torok
Australian Counter Terrorism Conference
The crisis in Syria has attracted worldwide attention as well as condemnation and has degraded into a violent civil conflict. Not only are there more than a thousand rebel groups including a number of hard‐line jihadist groups operating within Syria, but these jihadist groups are attracting a significant number of foreigners including Australians. This study examined social media discourses from Facebook and embedded YouTube links for recruiting Westerners to the war in Syria. Findings suggest that the perceived inaction of the international community and in particular the West coupled with the atrocities committed has become a platform for jihadi recruitment. …

The Cost Of Affordable Food, Candice L. Cobuzzi
SURGE
When someone puts a piece of food in front of me, I don’t just see a piece of food.
Instead, I see an innocent cow being cornered by a forklift and slaughtered, its limp, moist tissue hung on a long conveyer belt with hundreds of others.
I see hundreds of chemically-injected chickens packed into a dark barn with no hope of seeing sunlight in their lifetime.
I see immigrants pulled from their houses like criminals, taken away from the lives they’ve spent years building for themselves and their families, working for the same food company that courted them into the …
Nurses' Experience With Medication Errors, Kristin M. Belderson
Nurses' Experience With Medication Errors, Kristin M. Belderson
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Medication administration is an inherent nursing task, placing nurses at significant risk for experiencing errors. A systematic literature review established that nurses experience emotional, cognitive, and physical distress effects following medication errors, positioning nurses as second victims. The purpose of the DNP Capstone Project was to evaluate the lived experiences and coping responses of pediatric direct-care nurses working in a Rocky Mountain region tertiary care facility to assess whether the nurses have unmet post-event support needs. A descriptive, non-experimental, mixed methods survey instrument was used for this study. Of the 115 direct-care nurses employed in the selected department, 82 were …

Medicine Faculty Publications
Aims
Genome-wide association studies revealed an association between a locus at 10q11, downstream from CXCL12, and myocardial infarction (MI). However, the relationship among plasma CXCL12, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, incident MI, and death is unknown.
Methods and Results
We analysed study-entry plasma CXCL12 levels in 3687 participants of the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study, a prospective study of cardiovascular and kidney outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Mean follow-up was 6 years for incident MI or death. Plasma CXCL12 levels were positively associated with several cardiovascular risk factors (age, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia), lower estimated glomerular filtration rate …
