Joint Effect Of Multiple Common Snps Predicts Melanoma Susceptibility, Shenying Fang, Jiali Han, Mingfeng Zhang, Li-E Wang, Qingyi Wei, Christopher I. Amos, Jeffrey E. Lee

Dartmouth Scholarship

Single genetic variants discovered so far have been only weakly associated with melanoma. This study aims to use multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) jointly to obtain a larger genetic effect and to improve the predictive value of a conventional phenotypic model. We analyzed 11 SNPs that were associated with melanoma risk in previous studies and were genotyped in MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and Harvard Medical School investigations. Participants with ≥15 risk alleles were 5-fold more likely to have melanoma compared to those carrying ≤6. Compared to a model using the most significant single variant rs12913832, the increase in predictive …

Complexity, Hybridity, And Comparative Literature, Marina Grishakova Dec 2013

Complexity, Hybridity, And Comparative Literature, Marina Grishakova

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Complexity, Hybridity, and Comparative Literature" Marina Grishakova discusses "implied hybridity" in discourses, aesthetic systems, and media as a form of emergent complexity — as distinct from hybridity resulting from the mixture or blending of heterogeneous elements. Grishakova argues that complexity theories widely used in social sciences and, to a lesser extent, in literary and cultural studies, suggest a possibility to avoid dualistic thinking and offer a flexible conceptual framework for comparative literature studies. Aesthetic systems, as part of society's "imaginary," respond to, and reorganize in response to, impulses received from other domains, but also modify their environments …

Gender And Emotion In Comparative Perspective, Raili Marling Dec 2013

Gender And Emotion In Comparative Perspective, Raili Marling

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Gender and Emotion in Comparative Perspective" Raili Marling argues that although the study of affect is anything but new, literary studies can benefit from the creative tension between affect and (feminist) politics. Building on the work of Sara Ahmed and Lauren Berlant, Marling engages with the debates within affect theory and then fleshes out the idea of literature as a gendered intimate public sphere and investigates the political effects of emotions as cultural practices. The resulting — largely Anglophone — theoretical apparatus is then tested in a cross-cultural context by discussing Elo Viiding's negotiation of "happiness duty" …

Intramedullary Astrocytoma Presenting As Cervical And Upper Back Pain: A Casereport, Chao-Pin Yang, Chun-Yuan Cheng, Ying-Hsuan Li Dec 2013

Intramedullary Astrocytoma Presenting As Cervical And Upper Back Pain: A Casereport, Chao-Pin Yang, Chun-Yuan Cheng, Ying-Hsuan Li

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Intramedullary astrocytomas are rare, accounting for 3% of all central nervous system astrocytomas. Pain is the most common clinical symptom, although symptoms can vary. These tumors typically progress over a period of months to years before the diagnosis is established. An intramedullary astrocytoma and cervical intervertebral disc herniation may coexist; the early symptoms maybe similar and an intramedullary astrocytoma might go undetected and be misdiagnosed as cervical disc herniation. This paper reports a 30-year-old male who presented with cervical and upper back pain extending to the right upper limb. Initially, the diagnosis was a cervical radiculopathy. After rehabilitation, for two …

The Effects Of Hyaluronic Acid And Glucosamine On The Migration And Proliferation Of Tenocytes, Chien-Hung Chen, Jin-Fu Huang, Li-Lun Chen, Wen-Chung Tsai, Jong-Hwei S. Pang, Yu-Hsin Liao, Tung-Yang Yu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Tendinopathy or tendon rupture is a common disease. Studies have showed that hyaluronic acid and glucosamine benefit the process of tendon repair. Tendon healing requires the migration of tenocytes to the repair site, followed by the proliferation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix. However, the effects of hyaluronic acid and glucosamine on tenocytes remain to be explored. Here, we treated tenocytes from rat Achilles tendons with hyaluronic acid or glucosamine. The ability of tenocytes to migrate and proliferate was assessed by transwell filter migration assay and MTT (3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, respectively. Results from transwell filter migration assays showed that …

Producing Space: Block-By-Block Change In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jen Douglas Dec 2013

Producing Space: Block-By-Block Change In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jen Douglas

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Gentrification of urban neighborhoods is part of an ongoing restructuring of the city, linked to the emerging occupational structure of the service economy and the remaking of built environments that were created for a production economy. It is the name given to processes in which commodification and reinvestment accompany the in-migration of professional and managerial workers, often displacing prior residents and giving altered spatial form to inequality.

This dissertation is a case study of gentrification in Hyde and Jackson Squares, part of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The emergence of gentrification pressures and their uneven distribution within the area is documented …

Studying Soil Moisture And Land-To-Water Carbon Export In Urbanized Coastal Areas Using Remotely Sensed Data And A Regional Hydro-Ecological Model, Yun Yang

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The main objective of this research was to study the flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from a terrestrial urbanized watershed to an estuarine system using a process-based regional hydro-ecological model and remotely sensed data.

While DOC is an important component of the global carbon cycle, the link of the variations in terrestrial carbon storage is still poorly understood. Soil moisture is a key factor that influences the amount of available water for vegetation growth and the decomposition rate of organic matter in the soil and thus contributes to the amount of DOC in the soil at the land-water boundary. …

Influence Of Boulders On Netleaf Hackberry (Celtis Reticulata) Growth And Distribution In The Wasatch Foothills, Alex Argyle, Michael T. Stevens

Western North American Naturalist

In a landscape, abiotic features, such as boulders, influence microhabitats and consequently affect patterns of vegetation. We hypothesized that boulders in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains east of Provo, Utah, affected the growth patterns of netleaf hackberry (Celtis reticulata) by providing shade on their north faces. To test this hypothesis, we set up 3 transects 6 m wide and up to 50 m long. Along these transects, we measured all hackberries taller than 30 cm (n = 249). We recorded whether the hackberries grew within 0.5 m of a boulder that was at least 0.5 m …

Compressive Femoral Neuropathy Caused By Iliopsoas Muscle Hematoma: A Casereport, Szu-Hung Tsao, Yu-Ting Hsieh, Tai-Yi Wu, Shu-Hua Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Femoral neuropathy is uncommon compared with other mononeuropathies. We report a case of femoral neuropathy in a 53-year-old man who has cardiovascular disease and took Coumadin for 8 years. He has left lower extremity pain and weakness because of femoral nerve and lumbar plexus compression caused by an iliopsoas hematoma, which resulted from a period of prolonged bleeding. The patient’s condition improved after surgery and rehabilitation. We also reviewarticle the anatomy and pathophysiology of the femoral nerve, the clinical presentation of femoral neuropathy, the diagnostic tools used, the treatment method, and the prognosis.
