Exploring The Effects Of Multi-Level Protective And Risk Factors On Child And Parenting Outcomes In Families Participating In Healthy Start/Healthy Families Oregon (Hs/Hfo), Peggy Nygren Dec 2013

Exploring The Effects Of Multi-Level Protective And Risk Factors On Child And Parenting Outcomes In Families Participating In Healthy Start/Healthy Families Oregon (Hs/Hfo), Peggy Nygren

Dissertations and Theses

While many studies focus on the links between multiple risk factors and negative outcomes such as child maltreatment, less is known about the influence of protective factors in the face of risks. The theoretical base of this study was a social ecological model of interactive influences including individual parent, family, and neighborhood level factors to predict outcomes. Protective Factor Index (PFI) and Risk Factor Index (RFI) predictors were developed to explore potential multi-level protective factor buffering effects on key child development and parenting outcomes. Participants were first time mothers enrolled in a randomized controlled study of the Healthy Start/ Healthy …

Cattle Smuggling From India To Bangladesh, Elyse Malnekoff Dec 2013

Cattle Smuggling From India To Bangladesh, Elyse Malnekoff

Honors Theses

This essay examines the current trend of rustling and transporting cattle from throughout India for trade at the cattle corridors that lie along the border between India’s West Bengal and Bangladesh. An analysis of historical and cultural factors seeks to explain how this trade possibly began and increased. These motivators include the effects of the Mad Cow disease outbreak in the 1980s on international beef trade and the many economic uses for bovines and their by-products in Bangladesh. This research also looks at cattle-specific legislation in India that prohibits many of the practices employed by smugglers and details some possible …

Veteran Identity And Gender Representation: A Critical Visual Analysis, Ruth Harvie Dec 2013

Veteran Identity And Gender Representation: A Critical Visual Analysis, Ruth Harvie

Theses

This study reveals struggles over gender and identity in the military and shows how representations embody cultural, political, and ideological tensions over the role of women in the military and society. A chronological series of Veterans Affairs (VA) posters communicate this over a thirty year period. Visual communication and the area of representation and identity have long been studied across multiple disciplines, but no studies exist that examine the VA images. A critical visual analysis with the application of semiotics and gender theory revealed that veteran identity is significantly different between representation of men and representation of women.

A Decentralized Fault Accommodation Scheme For Nonlinear Interconnected Systems, H. Ferdowsi, S. Jagannathan Dec 2013

A Decentralized Fault Accommodation Scheme For Nonlinear Interconnected Systems, H. Ferdowsi, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel decentralized detection and accommodation (FDA) methodology is proposed for interconnected nonlinear continuous-time systems by using local subsystem states alone in contrast with traditional distributed FDA schemes where the entire measured or the estimated state vector is needed. First, the detection scheme is revisited where a network of local fault detectors (LFD) is proposed. A fault is detected by generating a residual from the measured and estimated state vectors locally and the fault dynamics are estimated by using an online approximator upon detection. Subsequently, a fault accommodation scheme is initiated in the subsystem by using a …

On Stream Assessment: Human Perception And Spatiotemporal Delineation Of Geomorphic Units, Benjamin Franek Dec 2013

On Stream Assessment: Human Perception And Spatiotemporal Delineation Of Geomorphic Units, Benjamin Franek

Doctoral Dissertations

The utility of human visual assessments to stream geomorphic unit delineation as part of project work inception has been established in the literature. However, certain issues arise. The impact of flow stage variation on stream geomorphic unit (SGU) distribution is not well known and the relatively short time that is spent conducting a visual assessment is not adequate to sufficiently understand the stream spatiotemporal dynamic. Also, critical assumptions regarding personal proficiency with visual assessments are embraced, yet often go untested. Even more, various disciplines are discordant in the way they identify and define stream units – interpersonal differences lead to …

Research Brief: "Military Children And Families: Strengths And Challenges During Peace And War", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University Dec 2013

Research Brief: "Military Children And Families: Strengths And Challenges During Peace And War", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This research describes the positive and negative affects of deployment on military families, such as resilience and depression respectively. The data shows that when military families establish strong and supportive relationships, they display more resiliency and tend to be active, optimistic, and self-reliant. These families would benefit from programs that focus on social stability and reducing the stigma associated with mental health care. Future research should focus on identifying the specific strengths and assets that help military children function well during a deployment, as well as studying these effects after deployment.

Family Processes As Moderators Of The Impact Of Peer, School, And Neighborhood Influences On Adolescent Aggression, Alison Kramer-Kuhn Dec 2013

Family Processes As Moderators Of The Impact Of Peer, School, And Neighborhood Influences On Adolescent Aggression, Alison Kramer-Kuhn

Theses and Dissertations

Despite theoretical support for the role of the family in providing a foundation to protect youth against risks for aggression, there is little published literature examining a protective influence. This study examined family functioning and perceived parental messages about fighting and nonviolence as moderators of the relation between risk factors and adolescent aggression. The specific risk factors included affiliating with a delinquent group of peers, attending a school with norms that support aggression, and witnessing violence within the community. Secondary analyses were conducted on data collected from a high-risk sample of 537 adolescents in 2 cohorts from 18 schools. Adolescents …

Social Withdrawal During Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Julie C. Bowker, Larry J. Nelson, Andrea Markovic, Stephanie Luster Dec 2013

Social Withdrawal During Adolescence And Emerging Adulthood, Julie C. Bowker, Larry J. Nelson, Andrea Markovic, Stephanie Luster

Faculty Publications

Peer relationships are of central importance for healthy psychosocial development and functioning during childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Peers provide unique opportunities for social-cognitive growth and the development and maintenance of social skills. They also serve as important sources of emotional and social support, can foster positive feelings about the self and others, and function protectively against the effects of interpersonal stressors (Rubin, Bukowski, & Parker, 2006). Without peer relationships, individuals might miss out on developmentally formative opportunities and experiences, such as acquiring certain socially competent skills and behaviors and forming intimate best friendships (Rubin, Coplan, & Bowker, 2009). It is …

Obm Thesis Project: Composing An Undergraduate Thesis Manual, William Strong Dec 2013

Obm Thesis Project: Composing An Undergraduate Thesis Manual, William Strong

Honors Theses

The Behavioral Research Supervisory System (BRSS) is a class designed to assist undergraduate and master students in completing a thesis project in a timely manner. Prior to beginning this project, undergraduate students were not utilizing the thesis manual for the class effectively and master students did not have an effective tool to grade the quality of their undergraduate thesis students’ work. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this thesis project is to create a better manual for undergraduate students to reference while working on their thesis projects and to provide a systematic grading system for their graduate student supervisors. A pre-manual …

This thesis project effectively defines what pain is in the body …

The Importance Of Anger Management Programs In Elementary Schools, Brittany Esterline Dec 2013

The Importance Of Anger Management Programs In Elementary Schools, Brittany Esterline

Honors Theses

Anger is a universal feeling. Everyone feels angry at some point in their life, and maybe even on the daily basis. Although it is often described as a negative emotion, anger is actually a healthy and natural emotion that should be expressed. It is how one responds to their anger that often disguises anger as an unhealthy emotion. Children who never learn to cope with their anger in a healthy way often struggle physically, mentally, emotionally, and academically.

“According to information obtained by the Learning First Alliance, 15 percent of students are only able to fit into an academic environment …

When All Seems Lost: A Discussion On The Implications Of Using Medicine For Scientific Advances, Rebecca Monterusso Dec 2013

When All Seems Lost: A Discussion On The Implications Of Using Medicine For Scientific Advances, Rebecca Monterusso

Honors Theses

When All is Lost is a creative non-fiction piece following the lives of two fictional characters living during World War" and the Holocaust. It is meant to discuss the moral quandary when human experimentation is used for the purpose of scientific advancement. The two main characters lives' are depicted in a series of modified scenes that describe what happens to them throughout the war. Leo Weinstock is a Jewish man who is chosen for the high-altitude experiments at Dachau after he is imprisoned during Kristallnacht. Erich, on the other hand, is a young, successful Luftwaffe pilot defending his country. Both …

Identity And Gender Constructs In "Written On The Body", Paige Van De Winkle Dec 2013

Identity And Gender Constructs In "Written On The Body", Paige Van De Winkle

Honors Theses

In Jeanette Winterson's novel Written on the Body, the ungendered narrator leads the reader through his/her love story with Louise. At moments, the narrator appears to reveal his/her gender, but these moments only reveal the reader's own assumptions about gender and identity which prove to be social constructions, and inconclusive evidence about the narator's gender. The novel shows that gender is not an inherent part of identity, and emphasizes themes that are universal and more important than gender differences, such as biology and the body. The body proves to be beautiful and universal, and gender is an insignificant part …

Effective Teaching Practices To Strengthen Outcomes For Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders, Brittnae Cole Dec 2013

Effective Teaching Practices To Strengthen Outcomes For Students With Emotional Behavior Disorders, Brittnae Cole

Honors Theses

Teachers of students with emotional and/or behavior disorders (E/BD) must use a variety of methodologies and interventions to address the varied academic and behavioral needs of their students (Walker & Gresham, 2013). Students identified as needing E/BD services require specific strategies that are researched based and have been proven to be successful in improving student outcomes (Kauffman & Landrum, 2009; Evans, Harden, & Thomas, 2004). After an extensive literature review from the past 10 years this paper presents some of the most frequently discussed research-based themes and subsequent interventions within the theme areas. The three most cited research-based themes presented …

Living And Leaving Lolita: An Autoethnography Of Identification And Transcendence, Rebecca Murphy-Keith Dec 2013

Living And Leaving Lolita: An Autoethnography Of Identification And Transcendence, Rebecca Murphy-Keith

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The dominant discourses around Lolita frame her as either an empowered seductress or a passive victim, but neither discourse delves into what it means to be Lolita, what it is like to embody the construct. Using a critical lens and layered autoethnographic account, I invite readers to experience and reflect on what it means to live Lolita. I argue that as an avatar for the present construction of femininity, Lolita operates as a tool of symbolic violence. By expressing the consequences of living Lolita and connecting my narrative to the broader social construction of gender, I hope to challenge the …

Needs Met Through Role-Playing Games: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Dungeons & Dragons, Aubrie S. Adams Dec 2013

Needs Met Through Role-Playing Games: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Dungeons & Dragons, Aubrie S. Adams

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is an immersive fantasy role-playing game (RPG) which allows players to fulfill real-world social needs through interaction. Although D&D may appear to be a game of simple make-believe, the emotions, camaraderie, and accomplishments experienced by players are real, thus suggesting that RPGs have real-world implications for players. Therefore, the goal of this study is to explore the ways in which players fulfill social needs through group communication during the context of D&D table-top role-play. Utilizing Bormann’s (1972) fantasy theme analysis, this study uses a case study approach to identify four themes which emerged within player talk …

Lines Of Flight: A Rhizomatic Exploration Of Transparency In Three International Humanitarian Sites, Carmen S. Lowry Dec 2013

Lines Of Flight: A Rhizomatic Exploration Of Transparency In Three International Humanitarian Sites, Carmen S. Lowry

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this essay, I apply a rhizome metaphor to explore the ways transparency functions in three humanitarian sites. Using a case study method, I investigate how transparency functioned in a resettlement program following communal violence in Indonesia, an emergency response program following Cyclone Nargis in Burma, and a gender-based violence program in Sudan. Through my analysis, I suggest that transparency is a communicative act that has both short and long-range implications for all parties involved, however removed, from the research or intervention project.

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan Dec 2013

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author’s personal, phenomenological experience of living with diplopia (double vision) in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Petra Kuppers’s notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece refunctions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.

Moral Turbulence And The Infusion Of Multimodal Character Education Strategies In American Elementary Schools, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D., Kristi L. Cobb, M.A. Dec 2013

Moral Turbulence And The Infusion Of Multimodal Character Education Strategies In American Elementary Schools, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D., Kristi L. Cobb, M.A.

Christian Perspectives in Education

Pockets of American society are marked by increase in violent crime with concurrent decline in moral character. This phenomenon is infiltrating the nation’s school system as evidenced by growing numbers of aggressive incidents in the classroom. As a result, there is an increasingly accepted need for effective character education programs in the schools as a means to help change the décolleté trajectory of the behavior of the nation’s school children. While more money and growing numbers of legislation have been put forth to support such an endeavor, research is still lacking as to what activities, skills, goals, and approaches would …

Framing Wrongs And Performing Rights In Northern Ireland: Towards A Butlerian Approach To Life In Abortion Strategising, Kathryn Mcneilly Dec 2013

Framing Wrongs And Performing Rights In Northern Ireland: Towards A Butlerian Approach To Life In Abortion Strategising, Kathryn Mcneilly

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist strategising on abortion has been dominated by a “pro-choice” frame. Increasingly, however, pro-choice discourse is being viewed as inadequate to meet contemporary and complex feminist aims and analyses, in particular due to the individualising ontological framework upon which it appears to be based. The work of Judith Butler is one location where such concerns have been explored and an alternative approach based upon a renewed analysis of the concept of “life” has been asserted. Foregrounding the fundamental precariousness of intersubjective life and opening the socio-political conditions sustaining precarious life to democratic public engagement carries significant implications for feminist strategising …
