There Is A Sob In There Somewhere, Antonia Macdonald Apr 2013

There Is A Sob In There Somewhere, Antonia Macdonald

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This essay examines the loud resonance of aging as a worrisome concern in The Prodigal, a poetic autobiography which its creator, Derek Walcott, has described as “an old man’s book/whenever you write it, whenever it comes out” (8). The essay argues that this long poem is both personal and performative. In The Prodigal, Walcott intimately explores the aging process and the biological deterioration it engenders as bringing him closer to death; at the same time he becomes the synecdoche for the aging artist who capitulates to diminished social and cultural relevance.

Sociodemographic Characteristics, Distance To The Clinic, And Breast Cancer Screening Results, Seijeoung Kim, Beverly Chukwudozie, Elizabeth Calhoun

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Timely detection and follow-up of abnormal cellular changes can aid in early diagnosis of breast cancer, thus leading to better treatment outcomes. However, despite substantial breast cancer screening initiatives, the proportion of female breast cancer cases diagnosed at late stages remains high. Distance to screening clinics may affect access to care, particularly for women living in impoverished areas with limited means of reliable transportation. Utilizing breast cancer screening data collected by the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program between 1996 and 2010, we examined the effect of travel distance to the clinic from which women received breast cancer screening tests …

How Bgsu Students Define "Intimate Partner Violence" And "Intimate Partner Abuse", Kelsey L. Klein Apr 2013

How Bgsu Students Define "Intimate Partner Violence" And "Intimate Partner Abuse", Kelsey L. Klein

Honors Projects

This study examines what behaviors undergraduate, heterosexual female Bowling Green State University students age 18-24 classify as “Intimate Partner Violence” and as “Intimate Partner Abuse.” This research begins to explore how this population defines these terms through looking at what types of behaviors are seen as violence and what types of behaviors are seen as abuse. Participants were randomly selected to take one of two online surveys. One survey asked participants to decide if listed behaviors were “Intimate Partner Violence” when committed by a male partner against a female partner. The other survey asked the same but replaced “Intimate Partner …

The Effect Of Variation In Endocrine Mechanisms On Natural Display Behavior In Caribbean Anolis Lizards, Diego Castro Apr 2013

The Effect Of Variation In Endocrine Mechanisms On Natural Display Behavior In Caribbean Anolis Lizards, Diego Castro

Biology Honors Theses

Sexual display behaviors often consist of elaborate performances designed to attract potential mates, and increases in circulating androgens are frequently associated with increases in sexual display behavior. In Anolis lizard species, display behaviors consist of dewlap (i.e., throat fan) extensions and pushups, and species can vary dramatically in their patterns of display. My objective in this study was to determine whether interspecific differences in androgen receptors in the muscles controlling dewlap extension and pushup behaviors are associated with the frequency of use of those muscles during displays. I used behavioral data for adult males of five species of Anolis lizards …

Contributions Of Apolipoprotein E And Environmental Factors In Alzheimer’S Disease, Kelly C. Mcmullen

Senior Honors Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder, which currently affects nearly 5.5 million people in the United States alone. Clinical features often exhibited in AD include memory loss, unusual behavior, personality changes, and impaired cognitive function. The primary molecular hallmarks of AD include deposits of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in brain tissue. A myriad of risk factors are associated with the disease, but this review will focus on Apolipoprotein E polymorphisms and certain environmental factors. Understanding the role of Apolipoprotein E in AD pathology may aid in the development of certain drug therapies and possible cures for AD. …

Complexity-Based Measures Inform Tai Chi's Impact On Standing Postural Control In Older Adults With Peripheral Neuropathy, Brad Manor, Lewis A. Lipsitz, Peter M. Wayne, C-K Peng, Li Li Apr 2013

Complexity-Based Measures Inform Tai Chi's Impact On Standing Postural Control In Older Adults With Peripheral Neuropathy, Brad Manor, Lewis A. Lipsitz, Peter M. Wayne, C-K Peng, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Background: Tai Chi training enhances physical function and may reduce falls in older adults with and without balance disorders, yet its effect on postural control as quantified by the magnitude or speed of center-of-pressure (COP) excursions beneath the feet is less clear. We hypothesized that COP metrics derived from complex systems theory may better capture the multi-component stimulus that Tai Chi has on the postural control system, as compared with traditional COP measures.

Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of a pilot, non-controlled intervention study that examined the effects of Tai Chi on standing COP dynamics, plantar sensation, and physical …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper.

Robots are virtual or mechanical objects that are used in facilitating the occurrence of multiple everyday activities. They have been heavily depended upon in U.S. industry, since 1961, and in health care after the mid 1980s. The virtual and mechanical robots have assisted people in a variety of tasks within and outside the laboratory and operating rooms. Some examples of robot intervention include medication administration, assisting children with autism, telemedicine, and transferring / lifting patients. The Effects Of Physical Activity And Excerise On Well-Being, Jatha Miner

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

A growing amount of research suggests that regular physical activity can have both psychological and physiological benefits to the aging process. Well being, a global psychological state, has been found to be positively influenced by physical activity, even after short durations. The present study investigated the components of happiness, satisfaction with life, and social support, all of which are believed to be parts of overall well-being. Six older, community dwelling adults (M age • 64.5) who recently added physical activity to their lifestyles were surveyed and observed over a five-week period. Do Age-Friendly Characteristics Influence The Expectation To Age In Place? A Comparison Of Low-Income And Higher Income Detroit Elders, Amanda J. Lehning, Richard J. Smith, Ruth E. Dunkle

Social Work Faculty Publications

Currently there is limited evidence linking age-friendly characteristics to outcomes in elders. Using a representative sample of 1,376 adults aged 60 and older living in Detroit, this study examined the association between age-friendly social and physical environmental characteristics and the expectation to age in place, and the potential differences between low- and higher-income elders. Based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) age-friendly guide, we identified six factors reflecting age-friendly characteristics. Logistic regression models indicated that regardless of income level only neighborhood problems were significantly associated with expecting to age in place. Low-income elders were more likely to expect to age …
