Analysis Of Community-Based Accumulation Of Home Medications (Caches) Found At Death Scenes In Davidson County, Tennessee, Carrie E. Plummer

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction: Stockpiling of unused medications by community-dwelling individuals results in Community-based ACcumulation of Home mEdicationS (CACHES). CACHES place the individual, health care and justice system, and ecosystem at risk for adverse outcomes including: a) diversion of prescription medications by friends and family, b) pediatric poisonings, c) adverse drug events, d) increased criminal justice system costs related to prescription drug abuse, e) increased health care costs, and f) pollution of local water supplies via improper medication disposal. This study explores the relationship among individual risk factors (gender, race, age, comorbid conditions), geographical location, health care risk factors (number of prescribers and …

Older Adolescents’ Self-Determined Motivations To Disclose Their Hiv Status, Ann Gillard, Mark F. Roark Jul 2013

Older Adolescents’ Self-Determined Motivations To Disclose Their Hiv Status, Ann Gillard, Mark F. Roark

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Disclosure of HIV status is an important topic for youth living with HIV/AIDS, yet theoretical frameworks for understanding HIV disclosure motivations have been poorly applied. Self-determination theory (SDT) proposes that people are at optimal functioning when they are engaging in activities that are interesting and enlivening. This study utilized SDT to understand young adults’ motivations to disclose their HIV status. Interviews and observations were conducted with nine youth aged 17–19 and two adult staff. Results indicate that SDT is useful for understanding types of motivation (i.e., amotivation, controlled, and autonomous motivation) to disclose. Amotivation was the most common type of …

Hip Fracture Surgery: Does Type Of Anesthesia Matter?, Rizwan Haroon Rashid, Adil Aijaz Shah, Amarah Shakoor, Shahryar Noordin

Department of Surgery Docs

Background: Hip fracture surgery is a common procedure, and the geriatric population with its multiple comorbid conditions is at most at risk of developing anesthesia-related complications. Data on the impact of type anesthesia on postoperative morbidity and mortality is limited. The effects of regional and general anesthesia on postoperative outcomes need to be clearly elucidated.

Methods: In this study, all patients who underwent dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation for intertrochanteric fractures, between January 2005 and December 2010, at the Aga Khan University Hospital, were included. Patients were divided into two groups; group A included those patients who received general anesthesia, and …

Considering Positive Psychology Constructs Of Life Satisfaction And School Connectedness When Assessing Symptoms Related To Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Emily B. Mancil, Jason M. Bird, Mike Lyons, Kathryn Van Eck, Bradley H. Smith

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Children and adolescents diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) demonstrate significant difficulty with academic and behavioral functioning. This, in turn, can lead to lower educational attainment and vocational achievement, which has serious long-term consequences and costs to individuals and society (Barkley, 2002, 2006; Mannuzza, Klein, Bessler, Malloy, & LaPadula, 1993). Researchers from a positive psychology framework suggest that ADHD symptoms (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity) alone may not fully explain academic impairment (Diener, Scollon, & Lucas, 2004). From the standpoint of positive psychology, life satisfaction and school connectedness are important constructs that examine positive life functioning; however, they have been understudied, particularly in …

"A Day In The Life:" A Simulated Experience, Melinda Hermanns, Narisa Waldo, Mary Luanne Lilly

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

An experiential learning activity titled, "A Day in the Life" was implemented with nineteen baccalaureate nursing students in order to achieve a holistic understanding of the challenges faced by persons living with Schizophrenia and a physical disability, such as a fracture in an upper extremity or a visual impairment. The role play simulation required that students interact with public transportation and community resources, while assuming the role of a person with Schizophrenia and a physical disability. Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, reflective journals, aesthetic expressions, and post conference discussions about "A Day in the Life" were reviewed and analyzed by …

Spending Today Or Saving For Tomorrow: The Influence Of Family Financial Socialization On Financial Preparation For Retirement, Scott H. Payne, Jeremy B. Yorgason, Jeffrey P. Dew

Faculty Publications

Many of the factors that motivate individuals occur within the context of the family, and can be influenced through family socialization processes. To better understand the influence family socialization processes may have on financial capabilities and financial behaviors, 334 married couples were sampled. Structural equation modeling was used to examine both direct and indirect associations. Findings indicated direct relationships between materialism and financial strain, between religiosity and determination of needs, and between financial strain and saving for retirement. Indirect relationships were found between materialism and saving for retirement through financial strain. Our study found evidence to support the Family Financial …

The Effect Of Age On Speech Motor Performance During Divided Attention, Dallin J. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the divided attention effects of three non-speech tasks on concurrent speech motor performance. These tasks targeted linguistic, cognitive, and manual motor activity. Participants included 60 healthy adults separated into three different age groups of twenty participants each: college-age (20s), middle-aged (40s), and older adults (60s). Each participant completed a speech task once in isolation and once concurrently with each of the three non-speech tasks: a semantic decision task, a quantitative comparison task, and a manual motor task. The non-speech tasks were also performed in isolation. The speech task involved repeating a target phrase each time a …

Emotional Involvement With Grandparents As A Key Component Of Prosocial Development: Testing Empathic Concern As A Mediator, Kathryn Leigh Bunnell Gustafson Jun 2013

Emotional Involvement With Grandparents As A Key Component Of Prosocial Development: Testing Empathic Concern As A Mediator, Kathryn Leigh Bunnell Gustafson

Theses and Dissertations

Current research shows that grandparents have made significant contributions to at-risk families. However, few studies have examined the benefits of grandparenting in non-at-risk populations. This study considered whether emotional involvement with a grandparent is associated with prosocial behavior in adolescent grandchildren and examines the mediating role of empathy and perspective taking. A longitudinal sample of 500 participants were taken from waves two thru five of the Flourishing Families Project (FFP) and used to construct a latent growth curve model. Results indicate that emotional involvement with a grandparent was positively linked with initial levels of prosocial behavior in grandchildren. Furthermore, results …

Ageing As Design Culture, Ozge Subasi, Lone Malmborg Jun 2013

Ageing As Design Culture, Ozge Subasi, Lone Malmborg

Nordes Conference Series

This paper discusses emerging themes related to design culture of ageing or in other words ageing as design culture. By looking into existing experiment and exploration practices from different countries on ageing and design, this paper summarizes outcomes from a full day international expert’s workshop. The main outcome is a need for a broader understanding of ageing that goes beyond the definition of ageing by means of age, deficits and needs. We introduce four main issues that emerged from our discussions in our workshop on how to deal with ageing as a subject of design experiments. These four themes can …

The Ingenuity Of Ageing: An Experiment To Explore The Role Of Designers As A Moral Subject, Denny Ho, Yanki Lee Jun 2013

The Ingenuity Of Ageing: An Experiment To Explore The Role Of Designers As A Moral Subject, Denny Ho, Yanki Lee

Nordes Conference Series

As a dialogue with the advocates of the idea of ‘design process as Things’ of which designers become facilitators and supporters for design process, we attempt to argue that designers should understand their role as a moral subject and their values in design should be revealed and discussed with design participants. Regarding the ways of deliberating values in design process, we employed Ricoeur’s ideas of utopia and ideology as the key concepts guiding the design of our experiment with a group of retired academics in China. We argue that designers could accomplish this task through a critique of ideology and …

Oxidative stress is involved in age-related cognitive decline. The dietary antioxidants, carotenoids, tocopherols, and vitamin A may play a role in the prevention or delay in cognitive decline. In this study, sera were obtained from 78 octogenarians and 220 centenarians from the Georgia Centenarian Study. Brain tissues were obtained from 47 centenarian decedents. Samples were analyzed for carotenoids, α-tocopherol, and retinol using HPLC. Analyte concentrations were compared with cognitive tests designed to evaluate global cognition, dementia, depression and cognitive domains (memory, processing speed, attention, and executive functioning). Serum lutein, zeaxanthin, and β-carotene concentrations were most consistently related to better cognition …

Colours Of Dementia, Suk Mun, Sophia Law Jun 2013

Colours Of Dementia, Suk Mun, Sophia Law

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Dementia is one of the commonest concerns of ageing. In Hong Kong, the population of those over 60 with dementia is expected to increase by 222% from 103,433 in 2009 to 332,688 in 2039 (Yu et al., 2012). To cope with the growing burden of ageing and dementia, measures that prepare society to accept and care for the elderly are necessary. College students are the future leaders of society. Their connection to the elderly is crucial in encouraging positive social changes in an ageing population. This paper proposes a service-learning programme of using arts to facilitate expression among people with …

Development And Implementation Of A Service-Learning Telephone Safety And Reassurance Program To Build An Eldercare Workforce, Lisa Brown

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

It is well recognized that there is a significant shortage in the global workforce trained to care for the elderly. The World Health Organization estimates that this shortage will continue to dramatically increase as the number of people aged 65 or older doubles from 11% to 22% by the year 2050. To meet the growing needs of an aging population, a wide range of professionals with health and social service expertise are required to help older people live independently and with dignity. Research on service-learning in gerontology indicates that this type of coursework plays a vital role in exposing students …

Background: The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT)/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) studies have established multiyear mean hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) as predictive of microvascular complications in persons with type 1 diabetes. However, multiyear mean HbA1c is not always available in the clinical setting. Skin advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are thought to partially reflect effects of hyperglycemia over time, and measurement of skin AGEs might be a surrogate for multiyear mean HbA1c. As certain AGEs fluoresce and skin fluorescence has been demonstrated to correlate with the concentration of skin AGEs, noninvasive measurement by skin intrinsic fluorescence (SIF) facilitates …

The Role Of Transcendence In A Holistic View Of Successful Aging : A Concept Analysis And Model Of Transcendence In Maturation And Aging., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Amanda Bockweg Jun 2013

The Role Of Transcendence In A Holistic View Of Successful Aging : A Concept Analysis And Model Of Transcendence In Maturation And Aging., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Amanda Bockweg

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Although successful aging is most often defined by the absence of disease and disability, older adults consistently report aging successfully even in the presence of chronic illness and functional limitations. A more holistic way of looking at old age suggests transcendence may be an important missing criterion for successful aging.

AIM: Transcendence, a late life developmental process, appears to have a profound effect within the spiritual domain, but is an abstract, complex and unfamiliar concept. A clear understanding of the meaning of transcendence is necessary to explore the concept’s usefulness as a potential basis for future interventions to increase …

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 36 loci associated with body mass index (BMI), predominantly in populations of European ancestry. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine the association of >3.2 million SNPs with BMI in 39,144 men and women of African ancestry and followed up the most significant associations in an additional 32,268 individuals of African ancestry. We identified one new locus at 5q33 (GALNT10, rs7708584, P = 3.4 × 10-11) and another at 7p15 when we included data from the GIANT consortium (MIR148A-NFE2L3, rs10261878, P = 1.2 × 10-10). We also found suggestive evidence of an association at a …

Aarp And The Politics Of The Obama Election: "Tough Times, Tough Choices", Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

The 2008 election and first two years of President Barack Obama’s administration was the context for an analysis of AARP news coverage. This research examined how news coverage was presented in the AARP Bulletin. During the health care debate, AARP often mentioned President Obama over congressional leaders. However, after passage of the law and subsequent election of a new congress, the Republican perspective offered a balance to the president’s agenda. The AARP Bulletin may be an agenda setter on controversial issues. This study explored themes, such as “tough times, tough choices,” which appeared to influence the coverage of political issues.

Marital Quality And Health Over 20 Years: A Growth Curve Analysis, Richard B. Miller, Cody S. Hollist, Joseph Olsen, David Law

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Although there is substantial evidence linking marital quality to physical health, few studies have been longitudinal. This study examined data from the Marital Instability Over the Life Course Study; 1,681 married individuals followed for 20 years were included in these analyses. In order to control for life course effects, participants were divided into 2 cohorts: early life and midlife. On the basis of latent growth curve analysis, the results indicated that initial values of marital happiness and marital problems were significantly associated with the initial value of physical health among both cohorts. In addition, the slope of marital happiness was …
