Suicide In Older Adults : Helping Case Managers Engage In Difficult Conversations : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation In Collaboration The Producer Of The Film "Talking With Dolores", Darlene O'Connor, Jennelle Liljestrand

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Suicide among older adults is an increasing mental health concern in the United States, and yet depression and other signs of suicide often go unnoticed. The film and discussion guide "Talking with Dolores" was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to increase awareness of warnings of depression and suicide in the elderly and demonstrate ways of conversing with them about suicide. Because of their unique contact with older individuals in their own homes, geriatric case managers are positioned as a gateway to necessary psychosocial support for elders, yet may not be receiving adequate training for the initial detection …

The Role Of Lgbt Community In The Lives Of Lesbians Over 65 : An Exploratory Study, Sarah L. Shapiro

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to explore the role of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the lives of lesbians over 65. Lesbians over 65 have lived through a period in U.S. history when homosexuality was not socially acceptable or safe; LGBT individuals lived with a real and constant threat of loss of employment and family, and of violence, without protection of law that is afforded today. LGBT individuals are currently more accepted, safe, and visible in the U.S, as are the communities that they have formed. With these new developments, do lesbians over 65 participate in, or connect with …

The Effects Of Experimentally Induced Psychological Stress On Memory Recall, Mohamed A. Mohamed Sep 2013

The Effects Of Experimentally Induced Psychological Stress On Memory Recall, Mohamed A. Mohamed

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Numerous studies have established the relationship between stress and memory, particularly stress and its effect on memory retrieval. When we experience stress, there is a cascade of hormonal responses which are critical to helping the body cope with the stressful event. When the stressful event persists, levels of the hormone cortisol--a type of glucocorticoid increases in response to the stress and have wide-ranging effects on the body. In particular, cortisol can have an effect on brain cells, particularly the hippocampus which is responsible for cognitive activities such as learning and memory. In this study, we utilized a public speaking task …

Perspectives Of Older Adults On Co-Management Of Low Back Pain By Doctors Of Chiropractic And Family Medicine Physicians: A Focus Group Study., Kevin J Lyons, Stacie A Salsbury, Maria A Hondras, Mark E Jones, Andrew A Andresen, Christine M Goertz

Department of Medical Genetics Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: While older adults may seek care for low back pain (LBP) from both medical doctors (MDs) and doctors of chiropractic (DCs), co-management between these providers is uncommon. The purposes of this study were to describe the preferences of older adults for LBP co-management by MDs and DCs and to identify their concerns for receiving care under such a treatment model.

METHODS: We conducted 10 focus groups with 48 older adults who received LBP care in the past year. Interviews explored participants' care seeking experiences, co-management preferences, and perceived challenges to successful implementation of a MD-DC co-management model. We analyzed …

The Question Of Self-Determination : An Analysis Of 21st Century Social Work Literature, Alexandra Prager Scalfano Sep 2013

The Question Of Self-Determination : An Analysis Of 21st Century Social Work Literature, Alexandra Prager Scalfano

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Self-determination is an integral part of the ethical foundation of the social work profession. However, the NASW Code of Ethics remains unclear in its definition of this and other important terms, such as social responsibility and professional judgment, that are often raised in discussions of self-determination and its implications to clinical social work practice. This analysis of twelve articles published in social work journals between the years 2000 and 2012 explores the field's current understanding of these terms and their implications as they are reflected in the current literature.

A Study Of The Universities Of The Third Age In Hong Kong : An Evaluation Of Elder Academy Model For The Life Long Learning Of Older People, Ka Fai Wong Sep 2013

A Study Of The Universities Of The Third Age In Hong Kong : An Evaluation Of Elder Academy Model For The Life Long Learning Of Older People, Ka Fai Wong

Lingnan Theses

Education aims at the development of knowledge and skills for its own sake and pleasure. People aged over 65 years currently comprise 11% of the Hong Kong population. Such aging population in Hong Kong constitutes a challenge to our society. To be adaptive to changes in the environment, especially in aging, more emphasis is placed on “lifelong learning” than on “lifelong education” for self-fulfillment Active aging is evidently supported as a solution to the impact of aging population. Lifelong learning is an important strategy for enhancing active aging. The provision and process of lifelong learning for older people can take …

Myc-Dependent Genome Instability And Lifespan In Drosophila, Christina Greer, Moonsook Lee, Maaike Westerhof, Brandon Milholland, Rebecca Spokony, Jan Vijg, Julie Secombe Sep 2013

Myc-Dependent Genome Instability And Lifespan In Drosophila, Christina Greer, Moonsook Lee, Maaike Westerhof, Brandon Milholland, Rebecca Spokony, Jan Vijg, Julie Secombe

Publications and Research

The Myc family of transcription factors are key regulators of cell growth and proliferation that are dysregulated in a large number of human cancers. When overexpressed, Myc family proteins also cause genomic instability, a hallmark of both transformed and aging cells. Using an in vivo lacZ mutation reporter, we show that overexpression of Myc in Drosophila increases the frequency of large genome rearrangements associated with erroneous repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). In addition, we find that overexpression of Myc shortens adult lifespan and, conversely, that Myc haploinsufficiency reduces mutation load and extends lifespan. Our data provide the first evidence …
