Scholarly Collaboration In Engineering Education: From Big-Data Scientometrics To User-Centered Software Design, Hanjun Xian Oct 2013

Scholarly Collaboration In Engineering Education: From Big-Data Scientometrics To User-Centered Software Design, Hanjun Xian

Open Access Dissertations

Engineering education research has grown into a flourishing community with an-ever increasing number of publications and scholars. However, recent studies show that a significant amount of engineering education knowledge retains a clear disciplinary orientation. If the gaps in scholarly collaboration continue to be prevalent within the entire community, it will become increasingly difficult to sustain community memory. This will eventually inhibit the propagation of innovations and slow the movement of research findings into practice.

This dissertation studies scholarly collaboration in the engineering education research community. It provides a clear characterization of collaboration problems and proposes potential solutions. The dissertation is …

Methods Of Revision In Sixteenth-Century English Cycle Drama, John Case Tompkins Oct 2013

Methods Of Revision In Sixteenth-Century English Cycle Drama, John Case Tompkins

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation contends that guilds-folk in sixteenth-century England made their own changes to the play-texts of civic drama and that these changes remain visible to us in the manuscripts which preserve the plays. Further, it argues that the actors and pageant-makers themselves often made these revisions, rather than the civic or ecclesial authorities traditionally credited for rewriting the pageants. These changes, introduced in production and transferred into the texts, helped keep the plays vibrant and successful throughout most of the sixteenth century and reflect the practical and local concerns of their participants. This work continues the historical investigations into pageant …

Effects Of Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii [Rupr.] Herder) Invasion And Removal On Native Vegetation And White-Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus) In Mixed-Hardwood Forests Of Indiana, Joshua Michael Shields

Open Access Dissertations

The threat of non-native invasive species continues to compromise the ecological and economic integrity of our natural resources. Numerous investigators have documented the negative effects of invasive species on native biota. However, much work is still needed with regard to how invasive species spread in space and time, factors contributing to impacts on native biota within invaded ecosystems, and resultant effects of removing invasive species. In terms of invasion patterns, few studies have documented local patterns and rates of woody plant invasions, and even less is known about changes in spatial patterning and factors influencing structural characteristics (diameter and height) …

The Role Of Young Hoosier Book Award Nominees In The Classroom: Using Approaches To Multicultural Education As A Lens For Evaluating Literature, Shaylyn Barrie Marks Oct 2013

The Role Of Young Hoosier Book Award Nominees In The Classroom: Using Approaches To Multicultural Education As A Lens For Evaluating Literature, Shaylyn Barrie Marks

Open Access Dissertations

This study demonstrates the need for the integration of multiculturalism in the K-12 curriculum as well as provides a heuristic based on the work conducted by Sleeter and Grant (2009) to evaluate literature for level of multiculturalism. In the study, the researcher uses an evaluate heuristic to critically analyze and evaluation ten of the books from the 2011-2012 Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) nominee list. The heuristic created for this study is applied to the books appearing on the YHBA nominee list to evaluate each book on an individual basis, but also by association, the types of books that that …

Assessing The Preparedness Of The Veterinary Profession To Communicate With Limited English Proficient Spanish-Speaking Pet Owners, Ruth Ellen Landau Oct 2013

Assessing The Preparedness Of The Veterinary Profession To Communicate With Limited English Proficient Spanish-Speaking Pet Owners, Ruth Ellen Landau

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to assess the preparedness of the veterinary profession to communicate with limited English proficient Spanish-speaking pet owners (LEP SSPOs). Results of surveys with 393 Latino pet owners, 383 small animal veterinarians and staff, and over 2000 veterinary students indicate that interaction between veterinary professionals and LEP SSPOs is not a rare occurrence: Veterinarians in states with large established or fast-growing Latino communities are seeing LEP SSPOs and their pets on a regular basis: 89% of veterinarians have LEP Spanish-speaking clients, over half of these practitioners are seeing LEP SSPOs weekly, and over half …

Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi Oct 2013

Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi

Open Access Dissertations

Nonlinear mixing effects inherent in hyperspectral data are not properly represented in linear spectral unmixing models. Although direct nonlinear unmixing models provide capability to capture nonlinear phenomena, they are difficult to formulate and the results are not always generalizable. Manifold learning based spectral unmixing accommodates nonlinearity in the data in the feature extraction stage followed by linear mixing, thereby incorporating some characteristics of nonlinearity while retaining advantages of linear unmixing approaches. Since endmember selection is critical to successful spectral unmixing, it is important to select proper endmembers from the manifold space. However, excessive computational burden hinders development of manifolds for …

Uncreative Influence: Louis Aragon’S Paysan De Paris And Walter Benjamin’S Passagen-Werk, Václav Paris Oct 2013

Uncreative Influence: Louis Aragon’S Paysan De Paris And Walter Benjamin’S Passagen-Werk, Václav Paris

Publications and Research

This paper looks at the role Louis Aragon’s 1926 novel Paris Peasant played in the composition of Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project. How we might theorize the literary appeal of the Arcades Project, as evidenced in contemporary poetry and visual art; and, more broadly, what is the relation between the aesthetics and the philosophy or politics in Benjamin’s text? The model I propose is one of a Bloomian “anxiety of influence.” By looking at Benjamin’s earlier writings and his correspondence with Theodor Adorno and Gershom Scholem, we see not only that Benjamin’s work shared much with Aragon’s brand of Surrealism, but …

Ideas Of And Attitudes Towards Projects And Changing Practices: Voices Of Four Teachers, Saurav Shome, Chitra Natarajan Oct 2013

Ideas Of And Attitudes Towards Projects And Changing Practices: Voices Of Four Teachers, Saurav Shome, Chitra Natarajan

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The paper reports a study of the project practices of four Indian middle school teachers, elicited through semi-structured interviews of individual teachers. The teachers also responded to a proposal to modify four aspects of existing project practices, viz. subject integration, assessment, group work, and management of resources. The aspects were derived to be significant from the recommendations of the Indian National Curriculum Framework (2005), and based on research literature on project-based learning (PBL). The study found that teachers largely used projects as motivating exercises before teaching, or an activity for applying what was learnt. Hence, they associated fluid meanings to …

The Journey To Becoming Teaching Professionals In Rural South Africa And Zimbabwe., Tabitha G. Mukeredzi Oct 2013

The Journey To Becoming Teaching Professionals In Rural South Africa And Zimbabwe., Tabitha G. Mukeredzi

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

There seems to be consensus on what constitutes effective professional development although the gap between rhetoric and practice remains wide. Knowing what professional development looks like is insufficient, what is critical is to get it engrained in school structures. The study explored professional development practices of twelve professionally unqualified practicing teachers in rural South Africa and Zimbabwe secondary schools. Drawing on models of professional development, analysis of qualitative interview data suggests that classroom teaching practice, in-school meetings and school-to-school subject cluster and association meetings are effective for teacher professional growth. The paper illustrates that if teacher professional development is to …

Politics, Economics, And Federal Land Designation: Assessing The Economic Impact Of Land Protection— Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Ryan M. Yonk, Randy T. Simmons, Brian C. Steed Oct 2013

Politics, Economics, And Federal Land Designation: Assessing The Economic Impact Of Land Protection— Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Ryan M. Yonk, Randy T. Simmons, Brian C. Steed

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Many local government officials bemoan the formal protection of public lands as taking off the table a variety of economic activities that could help bolster local economies. In contrast some have found evidence that indicate that designations may be positively correlated with economic indicators. We investigate the conflicting beliefs regarding the economic impacts of federal conservation designations through statistical analysis of economic conditions using panel data to compare two counties housing the sizable Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) to a set of counties matched on economic and demographic criteria. Our statistical analysis of economic conditions shows that after controlling for …

Saline Area Historical Society's Rentschler Farm Museum Tour, Elizabeth Searls Oct 2013

Saline Area Historical Society's Rentschler Farm Museum Tour, Elizabeth Searls

Historic Preservation Final Projects

The purpose of this project is to update the current tour that is being offered at the Rentschler Farm Museum. It can be all too easy to focus only on the “stuff” or artifacts that are inside a museum. Tours about “stuff” are not relatable, and typically not very interesting. This tour focuses instead on how artifacts may have been used, and on particular stories about the Rentschler family who poured their lives into their farmland. The new tour was also written in a way that is relatable to visitors of the museum. The greatest example being that to the …

Meaningful Membership: Making War A Bit More Criminal, Rachel E. Vanlandingham Oct 2013

Meaningful Membership: Making War A Bit More Criminal, Rachel E. Vanlandingham

Cardozo Law Review

Should membership in a particular group, by itself be enough for the government to kill you? This Article starts with the classic lawyer's answer of "it depends," but goes beyond it to answer yes, explain why, and recommend limits. The heart of the matter is found in how the law of armed conflict treats transnational, non-state armed groups such as Al-Qaeda. When such groups are viewed analogously to state militaries, their members are lawfully subject to lethal attack based on their membership status, as distinct from their actual hostile conduct. By comparing this focus on status to federal criminal law's …

The Constitutionality Of Using Eminent Domain To Condemn Underwater Mortgage Loans, Katharine Roller Oct 2013

The Constitutionality Of Using Eminent Domain To Condemn Underwater Mortgage Loans, Katharine Roller

Michigan Law Review

One of the most visible and devastating components of the financial crisis that began in 2007 and 2008 has been a nationwide foreclosure crisis. In the wake of ultimately ineffective attempts at federal policy intervention to address the foreclosure crisis, a private firm has proposed that counties and municipalities use their power of eminent domain to seize “underwater” mortgage loans—-mortgage loans in which the debt exceeds the value of the underlying property—-from the private securitization trusts that currently hold them. Having condemned the mortgage loans, the counties and municipalities would reduce the debt to a level below the value of …

Border Institutions - What Is Lacking In The Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands Dispute, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao Oct 2013

Border Institutions - What Is Lacking In The Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands Dispute, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This study explores the interactions among the claimants for the sovereignty over the Senkaku/ Diaoyu Islands dispute with the intention to find out what is lacking in their communication for a genuinely peaceful and mutually beneficial solution to the multilateral international conflict. Guided by the theory of border institutions and via the research methods of hermeneutics, we found that the US, though not a claimant, appears officially neutral but actually pro-Japan in the conflict, though deeply involved in the dispute, purposely remains on the sidelines. As claimants, Japan, China and Taiwan all insist on their own claims based on supporting …

Insurgent Encounters: Transnational Activism, Ethnography, And The Political, Julie A. Pelton Oct 2013

Insurgent Encounters: Transnational Activism, Ethnography, And The Political, Julie A. Pelton

International Dialogue

nsurgent Encounters: Transnational Activism, Ethnography, and the Political, edited by Jeffrey Juris and Alex Khasnabish, opens with a vignette describing an encounter between international activists and Zapatista base communities in 2006–7. The moment, and the thick description of it in the introduction, serves as an exemplar of the ethnographic approach to studying social movements advocated in this book: at once romantic, mysterious, and radical, while also rife with contradictions, struggles, and tensions. Juris and Khasnabish have gathered together a diverse collection of work on transnational activism that highlights the importance of ethnography as a set of methods largely neglected in …

African Nova Scotian Restorative Justice: A Change Has Gotta Come, Michelle Y. Williams Oct 2013

African Nova Scotian Restorative Justice: A Change Has Gotta Come, Michelle Y. Williams

Dalhousie Law Journal

Anti-Black racism in the criminal justice system is a concern for people ofAfrican descent throughout the diaspora, including Nova Scotia-a province shaped by slavery and segregation. A relational theory of restorative justice suggests that a restorative approach to criminal harms could yield transformational results within and beyond the criminal justice system. Using a critical race analysis, this paper demonstrates that despite the theoretical promise, restorative justice practice in Nova Scotia has not met the needs of African Nova Scotians nor fundamentally transformed structural racism within the system. The author concludes that a culturally specific, community-led African Nova Scotian justice strategy …

Off The Board: Ncaa V. Christie Challenges Congress To "Move The Line" On The Professional And Amateur Sports Protection Act, Dylan Oliver Malagrino

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

NCAA v. Christie, a recent landmark sports-betting case, is making its way through the federal courts and reigniting the fight for sportsbetting opportunities in the United States. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) is at the center of the dispute in that case. PASPA currently allows only four U.S. states to conduct sports-betting schemes in their casinos. Even if PASPA is held to be constitutional after NCAA v. Christie plays out in the courts, Congress should modify PASPA to allow states to regulate their own sports-betting enterprises. Without modification, billions of dollars in tax revenues and income from …
