Of Nazis, False-Bottomed Suitcases, And Paperback Reprints: Der Tod Kommt Zum Erzbischof (Death Comes For The Archbishop) In Germany, 1936−1952, Charles Johanningsmeier Oct 2013

Of Nazis, False-Bottomed Suitcases, And Paperback Reprints: Der Tod Kommt Zum Erzbischof (Death Comes For The Archbishop) In Germany, 1936−1952, Charles Johanningsmeier

English Faculty Publications

In Willa Cather: A Bibliography, Joan Crane provides an extremely intriguing entry for the first German-language edition of Death Comes for the Archbishop, entitled Der Tod kommt zum Erzbischof. The first part of this bibliographical description is quite innocuous: “Translated by Sigismund von Radecki. Stuttgart, 1940.” Immediately after this, however, Crane states: “Note: This edition was burned by the Nazis, and the plates were destroyed. The translator carried carbon sheets of his translation into Switzerland concealed under the lining of 2 suitcases.” She then concludes the description by noting, “The edition that follows (E50) was subsequently published in Zurich” in …

The Perception Of Maternal Anemia And The Effect Of Nutritional Education: A Qualitative Analysis Among Village Mothers In Rural Kumaon, Uk, Kelsey Bash Oct 2013

The Perception Of Maternal Anemia And The Effect Of Nutritional Education: A Qualitative Analysis Among Village Mothers In Rural Kumaon, Uk, Kelsey Bash

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Malnutrition is often associated with starving children in developing countries. However, while calorie and protein deficiencies—macronutrient deficiencies—are a cause for concern, micronutrient deficiencies can be equally detrimental and are even more pervasive. The most prevalent micronutrient deficiency is anemia, and the story of anemia in India is particularly grim. India has the largest number of anemic people in the world and severe anemia is the cause of death for an average of 22,000 Indians each year (The Micronutrient Initiative 2006). Anemia rates are exacerbated for women and even more so for pregnant women. According to the most recent National Family …

A Linked-Data-Driven And Semantically-Enabled Journal Portal For Scientometrics, Yingjie Hu, Krzysztof Janowicz, Grant Mckenzie, Kunal Sengupta

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The Semantic Web journal by IOS Press follows a unique open and transparent process during which each submitted manuscript is available online together with the full history of its successive decision statuses, assigned editors, solicited and voluntary reviewers, their full text reviews, and in many cases also the authors’ response letters. Combined with a highly-customized, Drupal-based journal management system, this provides the journal with semantically rich manuscript time lines and networked data about authors, reviewers, and editors. These data are now exposed using a SPARQL endpoint, an extended Bibo ontology, and a modular Linked Data portal that provides interactive scientometrics …

Water Access And Security For Mongolian Peri-Urban Communities In The Face Of Climate Change And Development, Heather Cook Oct 2013

Water Access And Security For Mongolian Peri-Urban Communities In The Face Of Climate Change And Development, Heather Cook

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The paper attempts to assess how water access and security in Mongolian ger districts is impacted by the competing forces of climate change and development. The development of Mongolia is, understandably, a priority of the government and much of the populace, as are the impacts of climate change, which are well documented and acknowledged. Furthermore, these processes both have potentially adverse impacts on the overall well being of communities. In the context of water access and security, the need to strike this balance becomes even more acute. These factors can all be seen playing out in the city of Sainshand, …

Written Journalism In Vietnam, Conor Grant Oct 2013

Written Journalism In Vietnam, Conor Grant

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Written journalism acts as an important bridge between states and their citizens. The relationship between the written journalism industry and the citizens of a given state is a result of both the respective history of state-society relations and the modern political atmosphere within the state. In the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the written journalism industry is a complex system that derives from a long colonial history and complex political landscape. The Vietnamese Communist Party currently operates the written journalism industry in Vietnam, exercising a monopoly on media authority. The first part of this research traces the historical evolution of the …

Como El Hijo De Nadie: Internal Divisions And The Struggle For Attention In Bocana De Paiwas, Alina Rosenfeld Oct 2013

Como El Hijo De Nadie: Internal Divisions And The Struggle For Attention In Bocana De Paiwas, Alina Rosenfeld

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Paiwas is a municipality located at the intersection of the Región Autónomo de Atlántico del Sur (RAAS),1 the Región Autónomo de Atlántico del Norte (RAAN),2 and the Pacific National half of Nicaragua. The autonomous regions are part of Nicaragua, but have their own regional government, control over their natural resources, and are dedicated to preserving indigenous culture, language, and traditions. Just as it is physically, Paiwas is an intersection between the regional autonomous government and the various levels of government on the Pacific side of the country: all governing entities in some way play a role in the development and …

[Sabbatical Report], Jun Yan Oct 2013

[Sabbatical Report], Jun Yan

Sabbatical Reports

During my sabbatical leave (Fall 2013), I have mainly worked on the project to explore the dynamics of the U.S. domestic airline market. This project focuses on geographic changes in the U.S. domestic airline market over the past two decades (1993-2012) at the level of city-pair directional markets. The primary goal for this project during my sabbatical is to prepare and process data for further analysis in the coming years.

Landscape Ideology In The Greater Golden Horseshoe Greenbelt Plan: Negotiating Material Landscapes And Abstract Ideals In The City's Countryside, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux, Laura E. Taylor, Michael F. Bunce Oct 2013

Landscape Ideology In The Greater Golden Horseshoe Greenbelt Plan: Negotiating Material Landscapes And Abstract Ideals In The City's Countryside, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux, Laura E. Taylor, Michael F. Bunce

College of Liberal Arts All Faculty Scholarship

We analyze the role of landscape ideology in the recent Ontario Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) Greenbelt Plan. Focusing on the “Protected Countryside,” the major land-use designation in the Plan that structures the Greenbelt framework, we explore tensions between abstract ideals of countryside used by policy makers to elicit support for the Plan and people's lived experience of material landscapes of the peri-urban fringe. Approaching “countryside” from the combined perspectives of landscape studies and political ecology, we show how the abstract ideals used to build support for the protection of countryside in the high-level political arena are in tension with existing …

Imsa360: Fall/Winter 2013, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

One of the best things about IMSA that never changes is that we continue to change, not “change for change’s sake,” but change to keep learning, leading and innovating, change grounded in who we are and who we aspire to be. One area of big change on the horizon relates to upgrading our facilities.

For some time now, we have coped with an aging campus, an academic building much of which has not been renovated since the 1970s (before IMSA opened and occupied the then- closed facility), and residence halls in serious need of major rehabilitation. Thankfully, the State of …

Jesus And His Jewish World: A Resource That Brings First-Century Biblical Context Into The Twenty-First-Century World Through Technology, Paul D. Conway Oct 2013

Jesus And His Jewish World: A Resource That Brings First-Century Biblical Context Into The Twenty-First-Century World Through Technology, Paul D. Conway

Doctor of Ministry

THE PROBLEM The twenty-first century Assemblies of God Christian and communicator are separated by thousands of years and miles from Christ's first-century context. Few tools provide a three dimensional resource that converge the literature, land and language to construct a bridge that empowers learners to cross that distance independently. Many resources available are scholarly, scattered or static. Those privileged to visit the Holy Land leave enthusiastic but fail to export large portions of the educational experience. This often results in the traveler sharing their images and impressions for several weeks until all that remains are emotional memoirs and a dim …

Vulnerability, Environmental Security, And Adaptation Awareness In Samoa, Katie Williams Oct 2013

Vulnerability, Environmental Security, And Adaptation Awareness In Samoa, Katie Williams

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Climate change remains a prevalent problem for today’s international community, particularly for Pacific Island countries. This study examines the current influence of climate change on Samoa by looking at the three tenets of vulnerability: exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. These aspects of climatic change correlate and build off one another, ultimately elucidating the basic vulnerability of any given region. It also analyzes how environmentally secure Samoa is and will be, using Thomas Homer- Dixon’s theory on climate change and conflict. Finally, this paper seeks to outline the current system of adaptation awareness that exists between government, community and foreign aid …

Issue 04: Inventory Of Services Provided To Immigrants And Refugees In The Waterloo Region, J. Fernando Reyes, Margaret Walton-Roberts, Jenna Hennebry

International Migration Research Centre

In this issue of Policy Points we have provided an inventory and assessment of immigrant services providers currently delivered in the Waterloo Region. Local communities play an important role in the settlement of newcomers and their integration into society. Waterloo Region has the fifth-highest immigrant rate in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2007), and in 2009 the Kitchener Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) was 11th highest nationally in terms of the number of immigrants arriving, and the fourth-highest in Ontario (Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 2011). Furthermore, Waterloo Region is expected to have a significant increase in the immigrant population over the next decades …

Jackson Unchained: Reclaiming A Fugitive Landscape, Susanna Ashton, Jonathan Hepworth Oct 2013

Jackson Unchained: Reclaiming A Fugitive Landscape, Susanna Ashton, Jonathan Hepworth

Publications

Slaves were allowed three day's holiday at Christmas time, and so it was over Christmas that John Andrew Jackson decided to escape. The first day I devoted to bidding a sad, though silent farewell to my people; for I did not even dare to tell my father or mother that I was going, lest for joy they should tell some one else. Early next morning, I left them playing their "fandango" play. I wept as I looked at them enjoying their innocent pay, and thought it was the last time I should ever see them, for I was determined never …

Measuring Bench Presence: Federal District Judges In The Courtroom, 2008-2012, Jordan M. Singer, William G. Young Oct 2013

Measuring Bench Presence: Federal District Judges In The Courtroom, 2008-2012, Jordan M. Singer, William G. Young

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

In a companion piece, the authors argued for a more comprehensive model of federal district court productivity that included, among other things, a measure of each court's capacity and commitment to provide procedural fairness to litigants. The authors further proposed a new procedural fairness metric called bench presence, a measure of the time that district judges spend adjudicating issues in an open forum.

This Article examines real-world bench presence data from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. On the surface, the numbers are disappointing for those who view courtroom time as integral to procedural fairness protections. Specifically, the …
