Trapping The Tigers: Regulation Of Market Entry And The Rule Of Law In Se Asia, Michael Touchton Nov 2013

Trapping The Tigers: Regulation Of Market Entry And The Rule Of Law In Se Asia, Michael Touchton

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent research identifies high barriers to registering a business as critical impediments to economic development around the world. Similarly, the lack of credible commitment to the rule of law – especially in the areas of property rights and contract enforcement – is also connected to economic underdevelopment. Scholarship treats these factors as rival explanations for underdevelopment. However, I argue the rule of law is the causal mechanism through which barriers to entry in the marketplace influence economic outcomes. Specifically, I present evidence perceptions of the rule of law in Southeast Asia decline as the legal restrictions on registering a business …

Urban Land Management Policy For The Central And Local Government In Albania, Gjergi Thomai, Daniel Guralumi, Iva Mezezi

UBT International Conference

The peculiar character of urban land influences the urban land market: (i) Land is physically undepreciable and is not influenced by time. (ii) Land is not transportable, (iii) Land is limited in quantity and its supply cannot be increased, and (iv) Land is used not only for production purposes but also as a long-term investment or as a basis for savings. Urban land management is a complex and highly dynamic situation that requires:

  • knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and processes of urban growth in a segmented and unregulated land driven market;
  • capacity to formulate strategic approaches to planning and …

Building An Evaluation Framework Of Environmental Interpretation For Chinese Geoparks---Case Study Of Yuntaishan World Geopark, Dongying Wei Nov 2013

Building An Evaluation Framework Of Environmental Interpretation For Chinese Geoparks---Case Study Of Yuntaishan World Geopark, Dongying Wei

Dissertations

Environmental interpretation is a key tool for integrated management of tourism, with potential for greater use in managing visitor numbers, behavior and impacts, and enhancing experience. Evaluation is necessary to determine whether interpretation is achieving its goals. It is vital for park managers to know if their management is effective in order to determine what techniques can be used to address a particular problem. The study first introduces the background of Geoparks, and clarifies the definition of environmental interpretation. Next, the study identifies the context that a comprehensive evaluation framework for environmental interpretation in Geoparks is used in order to …

Nonlinearity, Heterogeneity And Unobserved Effects In The Co2-Income Relation For Advanced Countries, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi Nov 2013

Nonlinearity, Heterogeneity And Unobserved Effects In The Co2-Income Relation For Advanced Countries, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Antonio Musolesi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study long run carbon emissions-income relationships for advanced countries grouped in policy relevant groups: North America and Oceania, South Europe, North Europe. By relying on recent advances on Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) and adopting interaction models, we handle simultaneously three main econometric issues, named here as functional form bias, heterogeneity bias and omitted time related factors bias, which have been proved to be relevant but have been addressed separately in previous papers. The model incorporates nonlinear effects, eventually heterogeneous across countries, for both income and time. We also handle serial correlation by using autoregressive moving average (ARMA) processes. …

Research On Diffluent Network Prediction Model Of Ecotourim Scenic Spot Based On The Dynamic Fuzzy Control, Peng Ge, Peiyu Ren, Maozhu Jin, Yanqing Qiu, Weimin Zheng

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The acute contradiction between tourism economic development and ecological environment protection is becoming increasingly serious in many natural scenic spots. It became the focus of both managers of scenic area and scholars that using advanced information technology to track the swath law of tourists and realizing real-time control of the time and space distribution of visitors in scenic area. This paper adopted the idea of fuzzy control, constructed a dynamic fuzzy feedback control forecast model based on the adaptive laws at first, then it proved two kinds of effects existed in this model. Finally, it simulated a single units attraction, …

Every Picture Tells A Story: The 2010 Round Of Congressional Redistricting In New England, Robert G. Boatright, James R. Gomes, Diana Evans, John Baughman, Nicholas M. Giner, Dante J. Scala, Amelia Najjar, Nicholas Rossi Nov 2013

Every Picture Tells A Story: The 2010 Round Of Congressional Redistricting In New England, Robert G. Boatright, James R. Gomes, Diana Evans, John Baughman, Nicholas M. Giner, Dante J. Scala, Amelia Najjar, Nicholas Rossi

Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise

The United States Constitution requires that

the number of representatives in Congress be

reapportioned among the states based on a decennial

census, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled half a

century ago that congressional districts within each

state must be, as nearly as practicable, equal in

population. However, the actual drawing of district

lines for our national lower house and the methods

employed for doing so are largely left to the individual

states. Redistricting thus presents a fertile field for

the comparative examination of state politics and

political institutions.

Some Observations On The Agrarian Question In The Era Of Economic Liberalisation In Sub-Saharan Africa: Which Way Forward?, Gear M. Kajoba Nov 2013

Some Observations On The Agrarian Question In The Era Of Economic Liberalisation In Sub-Saharan Africa: Which Way Forward?, Gear M. Kajoba

Zambia Social Science Journal

This paper contributes to the debate on the way forward in sub-‐Saharan Africa with respect to the agrarian question in emerging markets under economic liberalisation. The point of departure is that since the peasantry is a temporary category which can be transformed into other social groups that can earn their living from incomes raised outside agriculture (such as from wage employment in mines, manufacturing industries, and the service sectors), not every rural dweller should be or is a farmer. Improved methods of cultivation especially with mechanisation, agricultural extension, entrepreneurship, and skills training and empowerment of women and youth; secure land …

Alatzas: Handwoven Fabrics During The Early Industrial Period In Greece (1880–1920), Linda M. Welters Nov 2013

Alatzas: Handwoven Fabrics During The Early Industrial Period In Greece (1880–1920), Linda M. Welters

Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Faculty Publications

In the Greek provinces of Argolida and Corinthia, women wove striped or checked cotton fabrics called alatzas for a variety of purposes including clothing. Alatzas fabrics are not well understood, as they represent a relatively short transitional period from the older forms of village dress based on Byzantine prototypes to modern Western ready-to-wear attire. In the Peloponnese, they appear about 1890 and fade away after the Second World War.

These fabrics represent the first stage of development in Greece’s early industrial period. Improved transportation, particularly the railroad, brought manufactured goods to market towns where they were sold in shops or …

State Bred Event Days Effect On Attendance And On-Track Wagering In Comparison To Open Race Day Counterparts, Cynthia C. Gumber Nov 2013

State Bred Event Days Effect On Attendance And On-Track Wagering In Comparison To Open Race Day Counterparts, Cynthia C. Gumber

Master's Theses

Since 1978 casino and gaming facilities in the United States have grown substantially. Drawing outside customers has helped to improve the local communities surrounding the gaming facilities. In a similar fashion, United States horse racing aims at increasing traffic and wagering at race tracks throughout the United States (but unlike casinos little expansion). Along with the fiscal impact to the United States, the horse racing industry has created thousands of jobs, and the industry is experiencing continual growth in nominal gross wagering. Many state’s have breeder programs that enhance purses and horses bred and raced in- state. The goal of …

Optimism Versus Pessmism: An Exploratory Analysis Of China In Zambian Media, Bob Wekesa Nov 2013

Optimism Versus Pessmism: An Exploratory Analysis Of China In Zambian Media, Bob Wekesa

Zambia Social Science Journal

The huge interest in Zambia-‐China relations globally, both in academia and popular press, inspires several inquisitions. How have these relations changed and panned out in the present, from a Zambian media perspective? Would a Zambian media approach help provide insights into the ebb and flow of perceptions about China inside Zambia? What can we gather from the Zambian media on the September 2011 regime change in Zambia vis-‐à-‐vis China’s engagement? In other words, how did Zambian media craft perceptions on and of China in the era of late president Michael Chilufya Sata’s leadership? To answer these questions, this exploratory study …

Universal Goals & Local Application: Theological Field Education At St. John Vianney Seminary, Germaine Bruno Nov 2013

Universal Goals & Local Application: Theological Field Education At St. John Vianney Seminary, Germaine Bruno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study presents a curriculum history of theological field education at Denver's Roman Catholic seminary, St. John Vianney. The study utilizes archival material and the historical method to construct an educational historiography of the evolution and development of theological field curricula from 1910-2010. The research questions focus on two areas: the role of the Catholic Church in shaping seminary curricula and the adaptation and application of these Church guidelines by practitioners in the local context.

The study utilizes the conceptual tools of Kelly Ritter (2009) to analyze the findings in the light of socio-historical forces which shape curricula. According to …

With Green In Mind: Formative Influences On Ecological Mindedness, Shannon Burgert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the formative experiences that nurture ecological habits of mind in youth. The study builds on the ecological habits of mind defined by Moroye and Ingman: caring, a sense of interconnectedness, and ecological integrity. A combination of methods was used in this study: in-depth phenomenologically based interviewing, and educational criticism and connoisseurship. Data collection included two interviews each with five teenagers, one interview each with the teens' mothers, photographing of artifacts, and a focus group with six additional teenagers. Observations and interpretations were filtered through ecological and aesthetic lenses.

Several key findings emerged. First, it is proposed that …

Examining The Low Volatility Anomaly In Stock Prices, Munish Malhotra Nov 2013

Examining The Low Volatility Anomaly In Stock Prices, Munish Malhotra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern portfolio theory states that investments with greater beta, a common measure of risk, require greater returns from investors in order to compensate them for taking greater risk. Therefore, under the premise that market participants act rationally and therefore markets run efficiently, investments with higher beta should generate higher returns vis-à-vis investments with lower beta over the long run. In fact, many studies suggest that investments with lower beta actually generate equal to or higher returns relative to investments with higher beta. In looking at data for the S&P 500 going back 22 years between 1990 and 2012, this study …

Automatic Domain Identification For Linked Open Data, Sarasi Lalithsena, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Prateek Jain

Kno.e.sis Publications

Linked Open Data (LOD) has emerged as one of the largest collections of interlinked structured datasets on the Web. Although the adoption of such datasets for applications is increasing, identifying relevant datasets for a specific task or topic is still challenging. As an initial step to make such identification easier, we provide an approach to automatically identify the topic domains of given datasets. Our method utilizes existing knowledge sources, more specifically Freebase, and we present an evaluation which validates the topic domains we can identify with our system. Furthermore, we evaluate the effectiveness of identified topic domains for the purpose …

Differences In Drowning Rates Between Rural And Non-Rural Residents Of Ontario, Canada, Michael Fralick, Zane R. Gallinger, Stephen W. Hwang

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The objective of our study was to determine if rural residence was associated with an increased risk of drowning in Ontario, Canada. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all unintentional drowning deaths in Ontario Canada from 2004 to 2008. Age-adjusted mortality rates for males and females living in rural and non-rural areas were calculated using direct standardization, with non-rural residents as the reference population. We identified a total of 564 unintentional drowning deaths. The majority (89%) of fatal drowning victims were male, and 75% percent of victims were from non-rural area. Excluding bathtub drowning deaths, the age-adjusted drowning mortality …

Bold Leader Or Bully? Interpreting Chinese Regional Maritime Behavior, Harrison I. Fried Nov 2013

Bold Leader Or Bully? Interpreting Chinese Regional Maritime Behavior, Harrison I. Fried

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since 2009, tensions have increased markedly between China and its maritime neighbors over disputed territories in the East and South China Seas. China’s neighbors accuse it of acting like a bully, alleging that China engages in behavior that is aggressive, inappropriate, and oppressive. But can such accusations be substantiated through objective analysis, or is bullying truly in the eye of the beholder? Further, is China simply acting boldly, albeit in a manner that is justifiable, as it emerges as a leader in the region? The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether labeling China’s behavior as “bullying” (as China’s …
