Mass-Movement Disturbance Regime Landscapes, Hazards, And Water Implications: Grand Teton National Park, John F. Shroder Jr., Brandon J. Weihs Jan 2013

Mass-Movement Disturbance Regime Landscapes, Hazards, And Water Implications: Grand Teton National Park, John F. Shroder Jr., Brandon J. Weihs

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The Teton Range is the result of active crustal extension (normal faulting) and is the youngest range in the Rocky Mountains at approximately 2 million years old. This makes it a particularly attractive landscape to study, especially in terms of landform development and morphology because of its youth, state of seismic activity, and its recent deglaciation. These factors have combined to produce a unique fluvial landscape in that the fault-shattered metamorphic/igneous rocks of the range have been/are being eroded from their source cliffs at high rates which has covered the glacially scoured valley floors with colluvium such as talus slopes, …

Mobile Payments In The United States: How Disintermediation May Affect Delivery Of Payment Functions, Financial Inclusion And Anti-Money Laundering Issues, Erin F. Fonté Jan 2013

Mobile Payments In The United States: How Disintermediation May Affect Delivery Of Payment Functions, Financial Inclusion And Anti-Money Laundering Issues, Erin F. Fonté

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Mobile banking and mobile payments in the United States have evolved differently than in other developed and developing countries. The current fervor for mobile payments in the United States is more about chasing affluence and advertising than creating access for the unbanked and underbanked. However, those individuals may eventually gain access to a broader range of financial services at lower costs depending on how the mobile payments ecosystem evolves in the United States. U.S. regulators have made it clear that existing financial services regulations apply to mobile banking and mobile payments, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is poised …

The Association Between Sexual Orientation And Labor Market Outcomes, Justine A. Bulgar-Medina Jan 2013

The Association Between Sexual Orientation And Labor Market Outcomes, Justine A. Bulgar-Medina

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this research is to begin to describe various aspects of interactions with the labor market (e.g. employment status, individual income, household income) based on sexual orientation, using nationally representative data from the General Social Survey. Much of the previous research suggests that any observed differences can be attributed to employee choice of occupation or other voluntary aspects of employment. Furthermore, previous research has found wage premiums for gay women and penalties for gay men, with sexual orientation, not gender, as the lead cause. Based on this current data, I assert that any observed difference is an artifact …

Acceleration. Magnification. Diffusion. Entropy. Empowerment. The global environment and the international system are evolving at hypervelocity. A consensus is emerging among policymakers, scholars, and practitioners that recent sweeping developments in information technology, communication, transportation, demographics, and conflict are making global governance more challenging. Some argue these developments have transformed our international system, making it more vulnerable than ever to the predations of terrorists and criminals. Others argue that despite this significant evolution, organized crime, transnational terrorism, and nonstate networks have been endemic if unpleasant features of human society throughout history, that they represent nothing new, and that our traditional means …

Mapping And Decomposing Scale-Dependent Soil Moisture Variability Within An Inner Bluegrass Landscape, Carla Landrum Jan 2013

Mapping And Decomposing Scale-Dependent Soil Moisture Variability Within An Inner Bluegrass Landscape, Carla Landrum

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

There is a shared desire among public and private sectors to make more reliable predictions, accurate mapping, and appropriate scaling of soil moisture and associated parameters across landscapes. A discrepancy often exists between the scale at which soil hydrologic properties are measured and the scale at which they are modeled for management purposes. Moreover, little is known about the relative importance of hydrologic modeling parameters as soil moisture fluctuates with time. More research is needed to establish which observation scales in space and time are optimal for managing soil moisture variation over large spatial extents and how these scales are …

The Student's Perspective: Exploring Ethnic Group Variances In Bullying Behavior Using Mixed Methods Research, Stephanie Grunewald Jan 2013

The Student's Perspective: Exploring Ethnic Group Variances In Bullying Behavior Using Mixed Methods Research, Stephanie Grunewald

Dissertations

Although bullying is a widely recognized problem among school-aged youth, current research has failed to adequately consider whether ethnicity impacts students' involvement in, and perceptions of, bullying behaviors. This study employed a mixed methodology to examine how an ethnically diverse sample of students in seventh and eighth grade described and perceived bullying within their school. Initially, the Student Comprehensive Assessment of Bullying Behavior-Revised (SCABB-R) (Varjas, Henrich & Meyers, 2008a) was administered to students attending a suburban middle school in the Midwest (N = 750; 391 males, 359 females). Individual interviews were then conducted to further explore students' perspectives of bullying …

Truth Commission Impact: A Participation-Based Implementation Agenda, Tara J. Melish Jan 2013

Truth Commission Impact: A Participation-Based Implementation Agenda, Tara J. Melish

Journal Articles

With a focus on truth commissions, this Essay argues for a new approach to assessing the impact or effectiveness of transitional justice mechanisms. It recognizes at least four discernible approaches to impact assessment in the current literature. I term these “Quantifiable Truth,” “Victim Perception,” “Formal Political Rights,” and “Redistributive Development.” While each has added important and complementary insights to the field, each has also exhibited important weaknesses in its ability to speak persuasively to the question of meaningful long-term impact on the societal dynamics and institutions that lead to violence in the first place. To help fill this gap, I …

Animal Mobilegalities: The Regulation Of Animal Movement In The American City, Irus Braverman Jan 2013

Animal Mobilegalities: The Regulation Of Animal Movement In The American City, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

The initial focus of “animobility” scholarship has been on the dynamic physical geographies of animals. This article extends the meaning of animobility to explore the ways in which animals are affected — and, in fact, constituted — by law, as well as the ways in which they affect and constitute law, which I call “mobilegalities.” Specifically, I ask how animobility in contemporary American cities translates into the animals’ legal mobility, and how laws can adapt to animobility and the ensuing mobilegality by setting “traps” that then immobilize the animals. This article demonstrates, finally, that law is not a static narrative …

Investigation Of Craniofacial Morphological Variation At Sully (39sl4), Elizabeth Rose Agosto Jan 2013

Investigation Of Craniofacial Morphological Variation At Sully (39sl4), Elizabeth Rose Agosto

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study utilizes a theoretical framework of modern quantitative population genetics to identify factors contributing to the morphological variability between multiple, geographically distinct burial areas associated with the Sully village site (39LS4) in the Middle Missouri region of South Dakota. In particular three burial areas at Sully (A, D, and E) provide adequate samples for assessing intra-site variation. It has been a long-held belief that the observed morphological variability between burials areas is due to temporal sequencing; however, this explanation lacks hard craniometric and archaeological support. This study reassesses the assumption of temporal sequencing through the investigation of post marital …

Passing The Sniff Test: Police Dogs As Surveillance Technology, Irus Braverman Jan 2013

Passing The Sniff Test: Police Dogs As Surveillance Technology, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

In October 2012, the Supreme Court of the United States will review the case of Florida v. Jardines, which revolves around the constitutionality of police canine Franky’s sniff outside a private residence. Essentially, the Court will need to decide whether or not the sniff constitutes a “search” for Fourth Amendment purposes. This Article presents a review of the often-contradictory case law that exists on this question to suggest that underlying the various cases is the Courts’ assumption of a juxtaposed relationship between nature and technology. Where dog sniffs are perceived as a technology, the courts have been inclined to also …

The Geography Of Global Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions: An Exploratory Analysis, Jochen Albrecht, Peter Marcotullio, Amdrea Sarzynski, Niels Schulz, Jake Garcia Jan 2013

The Geography Of Global Urban Greenhouse Gas Emissions: An Exploratory Analysis, Jochen Albrecht, Peter Marcotullio, Amdrea Sarzynski, Niels Schulz, Jake Garcia

Publications and Research

The purpose of this paper is to describe global urban greenhouse gas emissions by region and sector, examine the distribution of emissions through the urban-to-rural gradient, and identify covariates of emission levels for our baseline year, 2000.We usemultiple existing spatial databases to identify urban extent, greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O, CH4 and SF6) and covariates of emissions in a “top-down” analysis. The results indicate that urban activities are significant sources of total greenhouse gas emissions (36.8 and 48.6 % of total). The urban energy sector accounts for between 41.5 and 66.3 % of total energy emissions. Significant differences exist in …

Beholding Nietzsche: Ecce Homo, Fate, And Freedom, Christa Davis Acampora Jan 2013

Beholding Nietzsche: Ecce Homo, Fate, And Freedom, Christa Davis Acampora

Publications and Research

That Ecce Homo, with its subtitle "How One Becomes What One is;' is Nietzsche's self-presentation of sorts seems rather easy to conclude. But why does Nietzsche do this? What is evident? What do we really learn from the work? Is it primarily a behind-the-scenes peek at Nietzsche's thought, the ideas that truly or actually motivated him? How complete is it as an autobiography, given that it seems devoted largely to his writings? To what extent can we put much stock in the account at all given that Nietzsche would slip into madness not long after the first draft was …

Mobile Money As An Engine Of Financial Inclusion And Lynchpin Of Financial Integrity, Claire Alexandre, Lynn Chang Eisenhart Jan 2013

Mobile Money As An Engine Of Financial Inclusion And Lynchpin Of Financial Integrity, Claire Alexandre, Lynn Chang Eisenhart

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Few people would dispute that mobile money can be an engine of financial inclusion and has the potential to reach millions of customers, including those at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid. Fewer though would characterize mobile money as the lynchpin of financial integrity. But financial inclusion and financial integrity have at least three tangential points to mobile money: (1) mobile money will help reduce dependency on cash, which is the common enemy of both financial inclusion and financial integrity, (2) mobile money generates data which is instrumental to the health and growth of both financial inclusion and financial integrity, …

Conservation Status Of A Threatened Tree Species: Establishing A Baseline For Restoration Of Juglans Cinerea L. In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Usa, Amanda M. Parks, Michael A. Jenkins, Keith E. Woeste, Michael E. Ostry Jan 2013

Ostry

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

To mitigate the loss of native tree species threatened by non-native pathogens, managers need to better understand the conservation status of remaining populations and the conditions that favor successful regeneration. Populations of Juglans cinerea L. (butternut), a wide-ranging riparian species, have been devastated by butternut canker, a disease caused by a non-native fungal pathogen. We assessed J. cinerea within Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) to determine post-disease survivorship and health, recruitment history, environmental conditions associated with survival, and the extent of hybridization with a non-native congener. Monitoring records were used to locate and collect data for 207 J. cinerea …

Multifunctional Furniture For Underprivileged Communities: A Milestone In Sustainable Development, Farah Nasser Jan 2013

Multifunctional Furniture For Underprivileged Communities: A Milestone In Sustainable Development, Farah Nasser

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

Overcrowded living space is a contributing factor to the social and economic problems in impoverished areas such as Jabal Al-Natheef refugee camp in Jordan. Addressing such a convoluted problem requires long-term planning and availability of resources. However, initiation of small projects to target pain points, employing technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) to design solutions, and empowering the people to implement them could alleviate the impact of poverty. Giving the stakeholders the ability to build and reproduce the designed solutions will help communities grow by allowing individuals to provide for themselves. This will also create jobs and sets the …

Business Language Studies And Study Abroad In “A Changed World”, Deb S. Reisinger Jan 2013

Business Language Studies And Study Abroad In “A Changed World”, Deb S. Reisinger

Global Business Languages

Postsecondary institutions increasingly focus their efforts on internationalization, but foreign language faculty and language and literature departments are conspicuously absent from the great majority of these discussions (Knight 2006, Gerndt 2012). The emerging field of Business Language Studies (Doyle 2012) offers an important path to participating in these decisions and thus to helping shape the discussions about developing our students’ global and intercultural competencies. The purpose of this article is twofold. On the one hand, we will show how BLS aligns with recent pedagogical trends put forth by national associations (MLA, ACTFL, AAUC), underscoring the importance of showcasing its work …

Experimental Pedagogy In A Course On International Business In French, Marie-Pascale Pieretti Jan 2013

Experimental Pedagogy In A Course On International Business In French, Marie-Pascale Pieretti

Global Business Languages

This article showcases “International Business in French,” a course developed at Drew University, with a special focus on ways in which students use their experience to construct knowledge of the world of business and economics in a variety of Francophone contexts. To illustrate the value experiential pedagogy can add to a business language course, it examines in particular the ways in which a trip to Quebec, the study abroad component embedded in the course, reinforces, challenges, and reveals ambiguities concerning the knowledge acquired in class prior to the trip. In conclusion, it outlines and discusses the challenges such a pedagogy …

Visual Exploration And Information Analytics Of High-Dimensional Medical Images, Darshan Pai Jan 2013

Visual Exploration And Information Analytics Of High-Dimensional Medical Images, Darshan Pai

Wayne State University Dissertations

Data visualization has transformed how we analyze increasingly large and complex data sets. Advanced visual tools logically represent data in a way that communicates the most important information inherent within it and culminate the analysis with an insightful conclusion. Automated analysis disciplines - such as data mining, machine learning, and statistics - have traditionally been the most dominant fields for data analysis. It has been complemented with a near-ubiquitous adoption of specialized hardware and software environments that handle the storage, retrieval, and pre- and postprocessing of digital data. The addition of interactive visualization tools allows an active human participant in …

The Materialism Of The Encounter: Queer Sociality And Capital In Modern Literature, Michael David Schmidt Jan 2013

The Materialism Of The Encounter: Queer Sociality And Capital In Modern Literature, Michael David Schmidt

Wayne State University Dissertations

In The Materialism of the Encounter I argue for the critical importance of queer sociality as a confrontation with global capital in which sexualities emerge as a material history necessary for rethinking the broader experiences of twentieth century modernity. To do so, I draw together a series of transnational texts--Henry James's nonfiction travel narrative The American Scene, Djuna Barnes's canonical Nightwood, and two neglected novels, Charles Henri Ford and Parker Tyler's The Young and Evil and Claude McKay's unpublished Romance in Marseilles--that exhibit a mode of sociality and literary practice I am calling the "encounter." While the …

Inmates face challenges in obtaining employment once they leave prison because many are undereducated and lack work skills. This study examined demographic and criminogenic variables of inmates in Michigan Department of Correction's (MDOC) Community and Employment Readiness Training (CERT) and Michigan State Industries (MSI) programs that were associated with their scores obtained on the WorkKeys® assessment test. MDOC uses the WorkKeys® to assess the gaps between inmates' current job readiness skill level and skills needed for various types of jobs upon release. There is no published literature comparing MDOC's Community and Employment Readiness Training (CERT) and Michigan State Industries (MSI) …

Increasing Referrals To Small Claims Mediation Programs: Models To Improve Access To Justice, Heather Scheiwe Kulp Jan 2013

Increasing Referrals To Small Claims Mediation Programs: Models To Improve Access To Justice, Heather Scheiwe Kulp

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

The justice system is in crisis. In 2011, 85% of Connecticut's family court cases had at least one self-represented litigant. In Massachusetts, 92% of parties appearing in housing cases are selfrepresented. New York saw self-representation in 97% of child support cases. Although judges and attorneys are learning to adapt to this new reality, the strain is felt strongly by bench and bar alike.

This article explores a service that many courts already offer-small claims mediation-and studies how courts may more effectively refer parties to such services. Specifically, this article identifies six primary models courts use to refer parties to small …

Hawaiian Land Disputes: How The Uncertainty Of The Native Hawaiian Indigenous Tribal Status Exacerbates The Need For Mediation, Donna S. Salcedo Jan 2013

Hawaiian Land Disputes: How The Uncertainty Of The Native Hawaiian Indigenous Tribal Status Exacerbates The Need For Mediation, Donna S. Salcedo

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Many people see the Hawaiian Islands as a paradise in the Pacific Ocean. However, most are unaware that history has left an unpleasant and permanent scar on the original inhabitants of the islands, the Native Hawaiians. It is often forgotten that the islands were once ruled by its monarchy. In fact, the Hawaiian Kingdom was not overthrown until 1893, and the islands did not reach statehood until 1959. Despite this however, Native Hawaiians have never officially been considered an indigenous tribe. This lack of recognition from the federal government has caused a strong sense of injustice that is prevalent throughout …
