National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

This study aims to evaluate soil climate quantitatively under present and projected climatic conditions across Central Europe (12.1°–18.9° E and 46.8°–51.1° N) and the U.S. Central Plains (90°–104° W and 37°–49° N), with a special focus on soil temperature, hydric regime, drought risk and potential productivity (assessed as a period suitable for crop growth). The analysis was completed for the baselines (1961–1990 for Europe and 1985–2005 for the U.S.) and time horizons of 2025, 2050 and 2100 based on the outputs of three global circulation models using two levels of climate sensitivity. The results indicate that the soil climate (soil …

An Examination Of Project Based Learning At The Secondary Level: A Review Of Literature, Candace Mirabile Jan 2013

An Examination Of Project Based Learning At The Secondary Level: A Review Of Literature, Candace Mirabile

MERC Publications

Project based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical approach designed to capture student interest by integrating a contemporary and relevant problem or issue with content standards. The expectation is that students who have not been successful under traditional teacher‐ centered/ lecture‐oriented instruction will be taken in by the opportunity to investigate a topic of personal interest using PBL. Moreover, some say that when constructivist learning (upon which PBL is based) is designed to reflect contemporary research methods and design protocols, students will be better prepared for the 21st century workplace (Apedoe, Reynolds, Ellefson & Schunn, 2008; Bell, 2010; Technology Assistance Program, …

International Cocaine And Heroin Trafficking: A Network Approach, Stephen Richard Anderson Jan 2013

International Cocaine And Heroin Trafficking: A Network Approach, Stephen Richard Anderson

Theses Digitization Project

This current study extends our understanding of international illicit drug trafficking of cocaine and heroin. Much of the research examining drug trafficking between countries has been done at the regional level. Although these two drugs are only produced within a small number of countries, they end up being used all over the world. This research provides a global portrait of the architecture of cocaine and heroin trade and tests whether crime opportunity theory can account for the relative position of transhipment nations. This project focuses on recent trafficking trends. The data used to build the architecture of each drug treade …

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of collective action framing mechanisms and processes by Hamas in order to aquire and maintain potential and existing human resources and to help researchers and scholars of contentious politics and social movement theory to gain a greater understanding of the role frames play in that decision by showing the ways social movement entrepreneurs use them to acquire, maintain, and motivate human resources for the purpose of collective action.

Drone Effects: Structural Change In Al Qa̕ Ida Communications, Stacy Michelle Bush Jan 2013

Drone Effects: Structural Change In Al Qa̕ Ida Communications, Stacy Michelle Bush

Theses Digitization Project

This study focused on the effects of drone attacks on the Al Qa ̕ida organization because the former CIA director, Leon Panetta, believed that this is the only tool that allows the United States to tackle or try to disrupt the leadership of Al Qa ̕ida. The use of drones as a tool to moderate situations and conduct covert operations by the CIA and U.S. military is a topic of debate and controversy. Drones are invaluable in regards to maintaining a presence in areas that can be extremely dangerous for service members or other individuals.

What Do We Mean By Decolonizing Research Strategies? Lessons From Decolonizing, Indigenous Research Projects In New Zealand And Latin America, Miguel Zavala

Education Faculty Articles and Research

While progressive allied scholars have articulated sound historical, philosophical, and deconstructive critiques of the colonizing and neo-liberal agendas shaping what counts as legitimate research, their arguments for alternative methodologies are generally silent on the role grassroots research collectives play in forming a strategic response to colonialism in the present. Here, the author develops a positional review of existing bodies of work, in particular participatory action-research (PAR) projects, focusing on what can be learned from these experiments in community self-determination. Building from PAR projects in the North, the author argues for a renewed understanding of the primacy of grassroots structures in …

Making Sense Of Human Ecology Mapping: An Overview Of Approaches To Integrating Socio-Spatial Data Into Environmental Planning, Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe, Kelly Biedenweg, Lee Cerveny, Diane Besser, Dale Blahna

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Ecosystem-based planning and management have stimulated the need to gather sociocultural values and human uses of land in formats accessible to diverse planners and researchers. Human Ecology Mapping (HEM) approaches offer promising spatial data gathering and analytical tools, while also addressing important questions about human-landscape connections. This article reviews and compares the characteristics of three HEM approaches that are increasingly used in natural resource management contexts, each focused on a particular aspect of human-environmental interactions. These aspects include tenure and resource use (TRU), local ecological knowledge (LEK), and sense of place (SOP). We discuss their origins, provide examples of their …

The Kentucky Humanities Council is an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities committed to providing programs and services that facilitate an understanding and appreciation of Kentucky’s cultural heritage and future. The Council’s program catalog features scholars from across the Commonwealth who make presentations on a myriad of humanities topics. Later, costumed actors, who delivered dramatic monologues about Kentucky’s famous, infamous, and composite personalities, were added. The catalog has gone by various titles over the years: Kentucky Humanities Resource Center, Kentucky Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, Whole Humanities Catalog, and Humanities Catalog. This …

Circulation And Cross-Shelf Transport In The Florida Big Bend, Austin C. Todd, Steven L. Morey, Eric P. Chassignet Jan 2013

Circulation And Cross-Shelf Transport In The Florida Big Bend, Austin C. Todd, Steven L. Morey, Eric P. Chassignet

Journal of Marine Research

The Florida Big Bend region in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico contains both spawning sites and nursery habitats for a variety of economically valuable marine species. One species, the gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis), relies on the shelf circulation to distribute larvae from shelf-break spawning grounds to coastal sea-grass nurseries each spring. Therefore, identifying the dominant circulation features and physical mechanisms that contribute to cross-shelf transport during the springtime is a necessary step in understanding the variation of the abundance of this reef fish. The mean circulation features and onshore transport pathways are investigated using a numerical ocean model …

Has Supply Chain Management Lost Its Relevance?, Natalie Descheres Jan 2013

Has Supply Chain Management Lost Its Relevance?, Natalie Descheres

Books/Book chapters

The context of business has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. The definition of need satisfaction, the shift from “dot to web” competition and the embedding of the organisation into a wider political and societal environment has transformed SCM contributions and the meaning of work for employees. Interdependence must evolve from the do-it-alone approach and yet the ashes are not proving fertile ground. In many ways, traditional models of management have not kept up with the changes and are taken aback by the complexity that surrounds us. Complexity is however not a feature of our world, but one of …

Ethical Lawyering In A Global Community, Trevor C. W. Farrow Jan 2013

Ethical Lawyering In A Global Community, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The pressures and opportunities of globalization have dramatically changed the nature of legal practice. How and why we practice law? For whom and whose benefit? In what contexts? And on what terms? The answers to these questions are continuously changing as a result of current global trends. The communities served by lawyers, the practice contexts in which they work and the issues that they face are increasingly diverse, complex, transnational and global in character. All of these challenges demand new competencies and raise a host of new issues about ethics and professionalism. As a threshold matter, more and more lawyers …

The Politics Of Relevance: Law, Translation And Alternative Knowledges, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2013

The Politics Of Relevance: Law, Translation And Alternative Knowledges, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

In this article, I want to suggest that there is a significant difference between the current interest of law in sociology (anthropology, geography) and the earlier instance of legal sociology. Whereas historically earlier stances responded, in no small degree, to legal positivism and, eventually, to both technological and societal change, the current social scientific engagement by lawyers appears driven by a differently articulated concern, even anxiety, about the viability of legal analytical, conceptual and semantic tools in a changed, transnational context. With the shift of law’s bearings from the nation-state to globalization’s strange land, law’s need to learn anew and …

The Shanachie, Volume 25, Number 1, Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society Jan 2013

The Shanachie, Volume 25, Number 1, Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society

The Shanachie (CTIAHS)

Paddy & Bridget & Wooster Square.

In the late 1820s, Irish immigrants established one of the first two ethnic neighborhoods in New Haven at Chapel and Chestnut streets near Wooster Square. This Shanachie is devoted entirely to the story of that enclave and the thriving Irish neighborhood it became throughout the rest of the 19th century.
