Persistent Culinary Traditions In Rural Southern West Virginia, James Seth Davidson Jan 2013

Persistent Culinary Traditions In Rural Southern West Virginia, James Seth Davidson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Appalachian region is home to a number of culinary traditions that are, in many ways, unique to the area. These traditions have persisted in a nation whose food ways are becoming largely homogenized. Using primary sources from Southern West Virginia such as historic cookbooks, archived newspaper articles, and personal interviews this research depicts a unique regional rural food tradition that has survived in many forms to this day. Comparisons are made to other regional rural diets, as well as well documented historic trends in traditional erosion as seen at the national urban and suburban levels, to support not only …

A Remote Sensing And Gis-Based Wetland Analysis In Canaan Valley, West Virginia, Yisha Shi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

With the increasing influence in climate change and human activity, more and more people have begun to recognize the benefits of wetlands. However, there was a continuous annual net loss in the wetlands area since 1980s. Many programs have been implemented to monitor the status and trend of wetlands recently. In West Virginia, the wetlands area is a small portion of the State’s land, but it plays a key role in the whole ecosystem. This research aimed to detect the land cover and vegetation changes focusing on Canaan Valley area, which represents the greatest wetlands area of West Virginia. Remote …

Steve Jobs' Moment Of Silence, Janet Dooley

SOJMC Faculty Research

Steve Jobs, founder and longtime center of Apple Inc. passed away on October 5, 2011. Tributes to this visionary were spontaneous and abundant. Users of iPods, iPhones, iPads and other computing devices could download to their iTunes library eight seconds of silence as a remembrance to Jobs’ contributions to technology, to communication and to the impact on their …

Have 21st Century Skills Made Their Way To The University Classroom? A Study To Examine The Extent To Which 21st Century Skills Are Being Incorporated Into The Academic Programs At A Small, Private, Church-Related University, Christopher Scott Boe

Education Dissertations and Projects

With the increased expectation of college or university attendance as a prerequisite for workforce entry, the criticism of business leaders and the general public, and the increasing cost of postsecondary education, it becomes critical for institutions of higher education to know what they are offering students and how well those offerings are being presented. Meaningful, engaged learning that prepares students for life and the ever-changing world of work is what these consumers are seeking. It becomes, then, the responsibility of the institution of higher education to evaluate its programs to determine what it is actually providing students in terms of …

Process And Making Of Landscape, Joseph Wood Jan 2013

Process And Making Of Landscape, Joseph Wood

Architecture Thesis Prep

This thesis seeks to focus its study on geological processes in nature as a tool to both make and read the landscape as if it were a novel; to uncover its myths and to allow the viewer to interpret its past. As Brad Cloepfil of the architecture practice Allied Works has stated, "A landscape that took some ten million years to form, millions of years before the appearance of man, is thereby nudged toward that most unique of human capacities; language." I claim that by extending the definition of making, earth driven processes can be used as tools to study, …

Warts And All: How The Plattsburgh Should Change The Way We Look At The Face Of Baltimore Maritime History, David Seaton Jan 2013

Warts And All: How The Plattsburgh Should Change The Way We Look At The Face Of Baltimore Maritime History, David Seaton

Legal History Publications

In 1820 the Plattsburgh was condemned for violating federal anti-slave trade legislation. This little known, rarely cited Supreme Court decision is important, because it pierces the veneer of romanticism that has been allowed to sugar over our recollection of Baltimore's maritime history. The case indicates that some of the most prominent ship owners and captains at the time, including Thomas Sheppard, John N. D'Arcy, Henry Didier, and Thomas Boyle, have links to the slave trade. This paper explores the cruel realities of the international slave trade, the ineffective federal laws aimed at prohibiting it, and the efforts by merchants to …

Revelatory Words And Images: William Blake And The Artist's Book, Ruth Li Jan 2013

Revelatory Words And Images: William Blake And The Artist's Book, Ruth Li

Honors Thesis Collection

Merging literature and visual art, artist’s books reveal the fascinating experiment between word and image. The works of the Romantic poet, printer, and visionary William Blake invite exploration of this relationship. Blake's illustrations in Songs of Innocence and Experience, revelatory in themselves, often subtly undercut or complicate the meanings of his writings, offering a complex view of the songs as both literary creations and material objects. Blake conceived the medium of the book as an ideal vehicle that, marrying text and image, had the power to join the author and the reading public. In addition to interpreting Blake's poems, …

Facinus, Quos Inquinat, Aequat: The Mutinies Of Lucan’S Bellum Civile, Carolyn Tobin

Honors Thesis Collection

For a people with fierce nostalgia for republican governance, Roman authors were astonishingly negative about the common people who once gathered together to serve as their legislature and their army. This paper explores the relationships between civil war generals and their troops in Lucan’s Bellum civile, an Imperial historical epic that deals with the wars between Julius Caesar and Pompey in the late 40s BCE, with the traditional Roman scorn for crowds in mind. Specifically, the paper looks at moments of potential mutiny against each major general in the poem and how Lucan uses these moments to characterize the …

Chicago School Closings Shadow Report: Independent Information For The 107th Session Of The Human Rights Committee, University Of Chicago Law School - Global Human Rights Clinic, Midwest Coalition For Human Rights

Global Human Rights Clinic

The City of Chicago recently closed 49 public elementary schools in an attempt to address budgetary and resource constraints. This is the largest wave of school closings in United States history, involving 10% of all public schools in Chicago, the third largest city in the country. Although there are many schools considered “underutilized” in Chicago, those that were targeted for closing were majority African American. The closings affected nearly 30,000 children and have had a disproportionate and negative impact on minority and disabled children. Displaced students will be packed into classrooms with more students, resulting in overcrowded classrooms. The school …
