Chemotaxonomic Study Of Citrus, Poncirus And Fortunella Genotypes Based On Peel Oil Volatile Compounds - Deciphering The Genetic Origin Of Mangshanyegan (Citrus Nobilis Lauriro), Cuihua Liu, Dong Jiang, Yunjiang Cheng, Xiuxin Deng, Feng Chen, Liu Fang, Zhaocheng Ma, Juan Xu

Publications

Volatile profiles yielded from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis provide abundant information not only for metabolism-related research, but also for chemotaxonomy. To study the chemotaxonomy of Mangshanyegan, its volatile profiles of fruit and leaf and those of 29 other genotypes of Citrus, Poncirus, and Fortunella were subjected to phylogenetic analyses. Results showed that 145 identified (including 64 tentatively identified) and 15 unidentified volatile compounds were detected from their peel oils. The phylogenetic analysis of peel oils based on hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) demonstrated a good agreement with the Swingle taxonomy system, in which the three genera of Citrus, Poncirus, and …

Uncertainty And The Reform Of Elementary Math Education, Wayne Melville, Ann Kajander, Donald Kerr, Jennifer Holm Mar 2013

Uncertainty And The Reform Of Elementary Math Education, Wayne Melville, Ann Kajander, Donald Kerr, Jennifer Holm

Education Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the notion of uncertainty as elementary teachers engage in conversations intended to develop their understanding and implementation of reform-based mathematics teaching. Using a narrative methodology, several sources of teacher uncertainty are investigated: teaching and learning, the subject, and improving one’s own teaching. The data analysis indicates two important findings. The first is the importance of substantive and syntactic subject knowledge as a necessary foundation for teachers to understand uncertainty in terms that renew their classroom practice. The second is the need to develop and sustain communities in which teachers value opportunities to critique their classroom practices.

Sobol' Sensitivity Analysis Of The Holocene Peat Model: What Drives Carbon Accumulation In Peatlands?, Anne Quillet, Michelle Garneau, Steve Frolking Mar 2013

Sobol' Sensitivity Analysis Of The Holocene Peat Model: What Drives Carbon Accumulation In Peatlands?, Anne Quillet, Michelle Garneau, Steve Frolking

Earth Sciences

Understanding the development of northern peatlands and their carbon accumulation dynamics is crucial in order to confidently integrate northern peatlands into global carbon cycle models. To achieve this, northern peatland models are becoming increasingly complex and now include feedback processes between peat depth, decomposition, hydrology, and vegetation composition and productivity. Here we present results from a global sensitivity analysis performed to assess the behavior and parameter interaction of a peatland simulation model. A series of simulations of the Holocene Peat Model were performed with different parameter combinations in order to assess the role of parameter interactions on the simulated total …

Evidence For Elevated Emissions From High-Latitude Wetlands Contributing To High Atmospheric Ch4 Concentration In The Early Holocene, Zicheng Yu, Julie Loisel, Merritt R. Turetsky, Shanshan Cai, Yan Zhao, Steve Frolking, Glenn M. Macdonald, Jill L. Bubier Mar 2013

Evidence For Elevated Emissions From High-Latitude Wetlands Contributing To High Atmospheric Ch4 Concentration In The Early Holocene, Zicheng Yu, Julie Loisel, Merritt R. Turetsky, Shanshan Cai, Yan Zhao, Steve Frolking, Glenn M. Macdonald, Jill L. Bubier

Earth Sciences

The major increase in atmospheric methane (CH4) concentration during the last glacial-interglacial transition provides a useful example for understanding the interactions and feedbacks among Earth's climate, biosphere carbon cycling, and atmospheric chemistry. However, the causes of CH4 doubling during the last deglaciation are still uncertain and debated. Although the ice-core data consistently suggest a dominant contribution from northern high-latitude wetlands in the early Holocene, identifying the actual sources from the ground-based data has been elusive. Here we present data syntheses and a case study from Alaska to demonstrate the importance of northern wetlands in contributing to high …

The Impact Of Hiawatha Light Rail On Commercial And Industrial Property Values In Minneapolis, Kate Ko, Xinyu (Jason) Cao Mar 2013

The Impact Of Hiawatha Light Rail On Commercial And Industrial Property Values In Minneapolis, Kate Ko, Xinyu (Jason) Cao

Journal of Public Transportation

The impact of proximity to transit on property values has become a key question in the debate on the relationships between public infrastructure investment and economic development. The focus has been on value captured by residential properties, with far fewer studies examining non-residential properties. Furthermore, few studies differentiate the effect of rail access and the effect of access to major interactions that later become station sites, and even fewer addressed the gradient of the accessibility effect. Based on the economic theory of firm location choice, this study develops hedonic pricing models to assess the value-added of the Hiawatha LRT on …

Property Lost In Translation, Abraham Bell, Gideon Parchomovsky Mar 2013

Property Lost In Translation, Abraham Bell, Gideon Parchomovsky

University of Chicago Law Review

The world is full of localized, nonstandard property regimes that coexist alongside state property laws. This Article provides the first comprehensive look at the phenomenon of localized property systems and the difficulties that necessarily attend the translation of localized property rights. Rather than survey the numerous localized property systems in the world, this Article explores the common features of the interaction between localized and state property systems. All localized property systems entail translation costs with the wider state property systems around them. Translation costs result from incompatibilities, as well as information and enforcement costs. Focusing on translation costs, the Article …

Economic Performance Of U.S. Multinational Agribusinesses: Foreign Direct Investment And Firm Strategy, Pablo A. Garcia-Fuentes, Gustavo F.C. Ferreira, P. Lynn Kennedy Mar 2013

Economic Performance Of U.S. Multinational Agribusinesses: Foreign Direct Investment And Firm Strategy, Pablo A. Garcia-Fuentes, Gustavo F.C. Ferreira, P. Lynn Kennedy

Faculty Publications

This study borrows the theoretical framework developed by Lee and Habte-Giorgis (2004) to empirically assess the sequential relationships between firm strategic factors, foreign direct investment (FDI) activity, and financial performance for a sample of U.S.-based multinational agribusinesses. After using hierarchical regressions and path analysis, this study finds a positive direct effect of FDI on performance, a complementary effect between FDI and firm strategic factors (positive and significant interaction terms) on performance, and a positive effect of FDI on performance given a threshold for firm size. Specifically, it provides insights about the direct effect of FDI on performance, as well as …

Guantanamo And The End Of Hostilities, Eric Talbot Jensen Mar 2013

Guantanamo And The End Of Hostilities, Eric Talbot Jensen

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Detainees in the War on Terror have been at Guantanamo Bay for over a decade.  The justification for these detentions has been, at least in part, the on-going hostilities in Afghanistan.  However, President Obama’s announcement in his 2013 State of the Union address that “by the end of [2014], our war in Afghanistan will be over” may undercut the continuing detention authority for at least some of these Guantanamo detainees.  This Article analyzes the legal doctrine of release and repatriation in light of President Obama’s announcement and concludes that the President’s determination that hostilities have concluded between specific Parties to …

U.S. National Weather Service Weather Ready Nation Initiative, Jim Salzwedel Mar 2013

U.S. National Weather Service Weather Ready Nation Initiative, Jim Salzwedel

DRU Workshop 2013 Presentations – Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Linking Mitigation and Resilience

The National Weather Service (NWS) has embarked on an initiative to first and foremost save more lives and livelihoods. By increasing the nation’s weather-readiness, the country will be prepared to protect, mitigate, respond to and recover from weather-related disasters. Society’s ability to prepare for natural disasters requires a societal response equal to the risk. Government cannot do this alone, which is why the NWS is leveraging its vast nationwide network of partners, and incorporating new partners who are beginning to share the vision of building a Weather-Ready Nation. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how the NWS is …

Time: The Fourth Dimension Of Hazard Mitigation Planning, Pat Skinner, Maurice Walcott, Joshua Kent

DRU Workshop 2013 Presentations – Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Linking Mitigation and Resilience

Coastal Louisiana has always had a very dynamic geography. It has been fairly well established that conditions “on the ground” change rapidly enough that our primary risk-assessment tool (the Flood Insurance Rate Map) is inadequate for regulating development - especially development that should have a meaningful life expectancy. In addition to the adverse impacts of continued development that increases run-off and decreases flood storage capacity, absolute sea level rise, and disappearing wetlands, there is the more complicated issue of subsidence.

In this session the presenters will share information about rates of subsidence in Louisiana, the evidence of subsidence, factors influencing …

Structural Engineering Students For Haiti: A Student-Run, Student-Initiated Organization For The Benefit Of The Haitian People, Andrew Jimenez, Alex Daddow

Architectural Engineering

On August 2nd 2012, a group of 10 students from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo traveled to Léogâne, Haiti to construct a bell tower for the Saint Rose de Lima Parish. The trip consisted of four days of construction, and three days of touring. The seven days in Haiti were a result of three months of planning by a student-run, student-initiated group called Structural Engineering Students for Haiti, or SESH. The following report documents the planning, execution and lessons learned from this trip. The planning included everything from fund raising to disease prevention. The trip was successful because the bell …

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton Mar 2013

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research linking ethnic cleavages to economic underdevelopment is a hallmark of recent efforts to explain economic growth. Similarly, the rule of law as a credible commitment to property rights and contract enforcement is also identified with economic development. Rather than treating these factors as rival explanations for economic development around the world, I propose the rule of law as the causal mechanism through which ethnic fractionalization (EF) influences growth in many countries. I argue ethnic diversity negatively impacts the rule of law due to the prevalence of ethnically-based patronage networks in developing countries. Public officials, I argue, face greater incentives …

Canada–Us Border Communities: What The People Have To Say, Leslie R. Alm, Ross E. Burkhart Mar 2013

Canada–Us Border Communities: What The People Have To Say, Leslie R. Alm, Ross E. Burkhart

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper investigates the Canada-U.S. borderlands relationship along the two geographic corridors as bounded by Lake Superior: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario–Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Thunder Bay, Ontario–Duluth, Minnesota. Borderland communities—driven by their shared cultural characteristics (ethnicity, language, religion)—are said to challenge the border as a dividing device and undermine the very essence of international borders. Moreover, borderlands regions are dynamic and overlapping, providing the first point of contact and interaction between nations. We use interviews of over 200 people living in these borderlands regions to investigate the cross-border relationships of Canada-U.S. border communities. We find that despite the challenges …

Assessing The Potential Contribution Of Vacant Land To Urban Vegetable Production And Consumption In Oakland, California, Nathan Mcclintock, Jenny Cooper, Snehee Khandeshi

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

As urban agriculture grows in popularity, researchers are attempting to quantify its potential contribution to local food systems. We present the results of a vacant land inventory conducted in collaboration with the HOPE Collaborative, a multi-stakeholder, community-based initiative in Oakland, CA, USA. Vacant lots, open space, and underutilized parks with agricultural potential were identified using GIS and aerial imagery. Using visual interpretation, we identified 1201 ac (486.4 ha) of public land and 337 ac (136.4 ha) of private land that could potentially be used for vegetable production. Based on USDA loss-adjusted consumption data, we calculated the potential contribution of these …

The Willamette Valley Winery Association, Oregon Winery Association, Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, and Oregon Department of Agriculture asked the authors to develop information needed to help inform discussions regarding the replacement for the soon-to-sunset HB 3280. HB 3280, signed by the Governor in August of 2011, provided a means for defining and regulating wine-related and non-wine-related events occurring or proposed to occur at wineries and vineyards in Oregon, often in exclusive farm use zones. Our charge was to investigate the following policy issue: How have wine regions permitted and managed a range of uses and activities at …

Does The Us Patent System Need A Patent Small Claims Proceeding?, Colleen Chien, Michael J. Guo Mar 2013

Does The Us Patent System Need A Patent Small Claims Proceeding?, Colleen Chien, Michael J. Guo

Faculty Publications

Patent litigation is expensive. The primary motivation for the creation of a patent small claims proceeding is to make enforcement more affordable. However, in the twenty or so years since the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) first endorsed the idea of a small claims patent court through Resolution 401‐4, the patent litigation landscape has drastically changed. Although patent litigation costs are still high, the equities have shifted. The marketplace for patents has developed, providing more options than previously existed to monetize and assert patents. However, the cost of patent defense has not gone down, and small companies cannot afford …

Is Jus In Bello In Crisis?, Jens David Ohlin Mar 2013

Is Jus In Bello In Crisis?, Jens David Ohlin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

It is a truism that new technologies are remaking the tactical and legal landscape of armed conflict. While such statements are undoubtedly true, it is important to separate genuine trends from scholarly exaggeration. The following essay, an introduction to the Drone Wars symposium of the Journal, catalogues today’s most pressing disputes regarding international humanitarian law (IHL) and their consequences for criminal responsibility. These include: (i) the triggering and classification of armed conflicts with non-state actors; (ii) the relative scope of IHL and international human rights law in asymmetrical conflicts; (iii) the targeting of suspected terrorists under concept- or status-based classifications …
