This paper proposes an adaptive Markov chain pattern detection (AMCPD) method for disclosing the climate change patterns of Singapore through meteorological data mining. Meteorological variables, including daily mean temperature, mean dew point temperature, mean visibility, mean wind speed, maximum sustained wind speed, maximum temperature and minimum temperature are simultaneously considered for identifying climate change patterns in this study. The results depict various weather patterns from 1962 to 2011 in Singapore, based on the records of the Changi Meteorological Station. Different scenarios with varied cluster thresholds are employed for testing the sensitivity of the proposed method. The robustness of the proposed …

"The Country Of Nine-Fingered People": The Southern Mountain Tradition And The Gothic In Faulkner's Intruder In The Dust And Dickey's Deliverance, Kathleen Peterson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the role of the Southern mountain tradition and the Gothic mode in William Faulkner’s Intruder in the Dust and James Dickey’s Deliverance. Using Julia Kristeva’s concept of the abject, it argues that Faulkner and Dickey appropriated already Gothic elements of Appalachian history in order to create the Gothic characters and settings that would allow them to explore major cultural anxieties of their time. Chapter One gives a brief overview of Appalachian history from the Revolutionary War through 1970. It examines both factual material and fictional portrayals, including the miners’ union strikes of the early 1900s, Mary …

Lifetime Optimization Via Base Station Placement And Power Aware Scheduling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunan Gu
Theses (Pre-2016)
Recent years have witnessed the advent of wireless sensor technologies and proliferating applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in various fields. Network lifetime has been a critical design goal of any battery operated large scale WSNs. Especially for delay-sensitive WSNs, it is challenging to prolong the network lifetime, while meeting the delay requirements of different applications. In this thesis, we fisrt investigate how to prolong the lifetime of large scale WSNs via optimal placement of base stations (BSs). With multiple BSs placed, the sensor nodes can send their data to nearby sinks and may reduce energy consumption ofrelaying packets for …
"Balanced Between Poetry And Practicality": The Agrarian Figure In Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd And Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, Rebecca Puelle
"Balanced Between Poetry And Practicality": The Agrarian Figure In Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd And Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, Rebecca Puelle
Honors Scholar Theses
A surface reading of any of Thomas Hardy's novels of the fictional world of Wessex- the south-England county based on the real-life counties of Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, and Hampshire- invites readers to revel in the silly quandaries of the villagers, farmers, malsterers, and labourers that populate this idyllic, pastoral world with quaint phrases, delectable dialects, and jovial camraderies. Even when Hardy’s vision is deeply tragic, he maintains an interest in a colorful, and sometimes even comic, cast of bucolic people. A closer reading of Hardy, however, challenges readers to chart the changing course of agricultural labour in mid …

Does The Sat Predict Academic Achievement And Academic Choices At Macalester College?, Jing Wen
Does The Sat Predict Academic Achievement And Academic Choices At Macalester College?, Jing Wen
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
This paper examines the predictive power of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for Macalester students’ college success and academic choices. We use linear regression to study whether the SAT can predict students’ first year or four-year grades. Using Kullback-Leibler divergence and classification trees, we also examine the SAT’s predictive ability for other aspects of students’ academic experience, for example, major selection, or academic division of study. After controlling for major and course level, we find that the SAT does not explain a large proportion of the variability in Macalester students’ college success. However, the SAT does provide some useful information …
Negotiating Neoliberalism: Community-Based Organizations And The Production Of Urban Place, Caroline S. Devany
Negotiating Neoliberalism: Community-Based Organizations And The Production Of Urban Place, Caroline S. Devany
Geography Honors Projects
Focusing on two community-based organizations’ roles in producing urban place, this thesis contributes to the “New Urban Politics” literature that explores the neoliberal governance of space. Synthesizing participant observation, informant interviews and ideas introduced in Henri Lefebvre’s Production of Space my thesis explores the possibility of aesthetic practices rooted in everyday life to create alternate subjectivities of people and place. While both organizations engage urban governance in ways that do not directly contest neoliberalization, they each affirm participants as agents in the production of urban place in ways that can destabilize the marketization of everyday life.
Assessing Foreclosure And Crime At Street Segments In Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Blake Richard Christenson
Assessing Foreclosure And Crime At Street Segments In Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Blake Richard Christenson
Theses
Foreclosures are potentially problematic for neighborhood crime rates by providing crime attractors to residential communities. In the past, like many criminogenic features, foreclosures were typically seen as an inner city problem; however, in the wake of the housing market collapse of 2008 precipitated by suspect banking practices, foreclosures were particularly impacting young and new middle class homeowners (i.e., people with little credit history or assets). This study improves upon past research in two areas. First, instead of using large heterogeneous units of analysis (e.g., block groups, tracts, counties), this study uses street blocks. Street blocks, here, are preferred because of …
The Soul Of Man Under Capitalism, Joe L. Cantu
The Soul Of Man Under Capitalism, Joe L. Cantu
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This paper examines the consciousness of three literary characters, divided by space and time, from mid nineteenth century Russia, mid twentieth century Italy, to late twentieth century American society. This paper exposes literature’s rendition of modern man’s varying consciousness as shaped by the changing social conditions around him. This paper recognizes these varying social conditions as different stages in capitalism’s development. Capitalism has a history; the literature this paper examines discloses its negative impact on the consciousness of its characters. In analyzing Notes from the Underground, Contempt, and American Psycho, three novels separated by geography and spanning a timeframe of …

La Joya Isd Fine Arts: Teaching Mexican Identity Through Music And Dance, Katrena H. Henry
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The La Joya Independent School District has made a serious effort to cultivate and promote mariachi, conjunto, and folklórico programs at the middle school and high school level. Students give numerous performances throughout the year and these programs have exposed thousands of people to the music and traditions of Mexico and the border region. What draws so many students to these particular programs in La Joya ISD? What sense of "Mexican identity" do these programs create for its participants? Through observing various performances, interviewing educators, students, and community members, I explore why these programs are considered essential by the school …
Academic Performance Of First-Year Students At A College Of Pharmacy In East Tennessee: Models For Prediction, Cheri W. Clavier
Academic Performance Of First-Year Students At A College Of Pharmacy In East Tennessee: Models For Prediction, Cheri W. Clavier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increase of students applying to pharmacy programs, it is imperative that admissions committees choose appropriate measures to analyze student readiness. The purpose of this research was to identify significant factors that predict the academic performance, defined as grade point average (GPA) at the end of the first professional year, of pharmacy students. The population consisted of 466 students enrolled in a Doctor of Pharmacy Program in northeast Tennessee over a 5-year period. Statistical procedures included bivariate correlations, t-tests for independent samples, and multiple regression. Analysis of the data revealed that the majority of the students in the population …
Never Quite Settled: Southern Plain Folk On The Move, Ronald J. Mccall
Never Quite Settled: Southern Plain Folk On The Move, Ronald J. Mccall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the settlement of the Mississippi Territory through the eyes of John Hailes, a Southern yeoman farmer, from 1813 until his death in 1859. This is a family history. As such, the goal of this paper is to reconstruct John’s life to better understand who he was, why he left South Carolina, how he made a living in Mississippi, and to determine a degree of upward mobility.
Local, state, and federal government records provide the general context of this study and accurately track John’s movements and land purchases within the territory. John's frequent movements and the land he …
Site Location Modeling And Prehistoric Rock Shelter Selection On The Upper Cumberland Plateau Of Tennessee, Lucinda M. Langston
Site Location Modeling And Prehistoric Rock Shelter Selection On The Upper Cumberland Plateau Of Tennessee, Lucinda M. Langston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Using data collected from 2 archaeological surveys of the Upper Cumberland Plateau (UCP), Pogue Creek Gorge and East Obey, a site location model was developed for prehistoric rock shelter occupation in the region. Further, the UCP model was used to explore factors related to differential site selection of rock shelters. Different from traditional approaches such as those that use (aspatial) logistic regression, the UCP model was developed using spatial logistic regression. However, models were also generated using other regression-based approaches in an effort to demonstrate the need for a spatial approach to archaeological site location modeling. Based on the UCP …
Assessment Of Hyporheic Exchange At In-Stream Restoration Structures On Savage River, Garrett County, Maryland, Anna L. Berlinghieri
Assessment Of Hyporheic Exchange At In-Stream Restoration Structures On Savage River, Garrett County, Maryland, Anna L. Berlinghieri
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies have shown that in-stream restoration structures alter hyporheic exchange dynamics in restored channels; this study assessed hyporheic exchange at a recently constructed stream reach, including the effects of in-stream restoration structures. Hydrometric and thermal data were collected in the streambed near three restoration structures and at a reference site. The hydrometric data indicated that hyporheic flow paths may not have fully developed in the first 16 months following construction; only one in-stream piezometer was unambiguously hydraulically connected to changes in stream stage. Other hydrometric data revealed possible piezometer installations in low permeability materials, potential hydraulic connections to an …
Spring Studies And A Decision-Making Process To Guide Groundwater Contamination Prevention In An Agricultural Karst Basin, Erin D. Murphy
Spring Studies And A Decision-Making Process To Guide Groundwater Contamination Prevention In An Agricultural Karst Basin, Erin D. Murphy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Groundwater contamination is a potential major health and environmental issue in karst aquifers because of rapid surface water to groundwater connections and conduit-dominated flow that may allow contaminants to move great distances from their source in a very short amount of time. Agricultural contaminants are a significant problem in Buckeye Creek basin in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Pasquarell and Boyer (1995) found that cattle grazing near sinking streams, sinkholes, and springs contribute to the elevated levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the groundwater. Six sites in Buckeye Creek basin were monitored for fecal coliform contamination and then analyzed in order …

Gamechangers: A Content And Semiotic Analysis Of Super Bowl Commercials During Recession And Non-Recession Years, Joshua Smithson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in symbolic content of Super Bowl commercials during recession and non-recession years. Another aim was to find out if humorous commercials were more common in recession year commercials as opposed to non-recession year commercials. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were applied. The study examined the topic through both content analysis and semiotic analysis. For the content analysis, commercials were viewed and coded to address the question of whether commercials change based on economic conditions. For the semiotic analysis, one commercial from each of the four selected years was chosen to …
Specialists, Generalists, And Policy Advocacy By Charitable Nonprofit Organizations, Heather Macindoe, Ryan Whalen
Specialists, Generalists, And Policy Advocacy By Charitable Nonprofit Organizations, Heather Macindoe, Ryan Whalen
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Previous research finds modest levels of engagement in policy advocacy by charitable nonprofits, despite legal regulations permitting nonprofit advocacy and the significance of public policy to nonprofit constituencies. This paper examines nonprofit involvement in policy advocacy using survey data from Boston, Massachusetts. Nonprofit participation in policy advocacy is associated with professionalization, resource dependence, features of the institutional environment, and organizational characteristics such as size and mission. Drawing from population ecology theory, we examine an additional aspect of organizational mission: whether a nonprofit serves a specialized or general population. We find that nonprofits serving specialized populations are more likely to participate …
Floatovoltaics: Quantifying The Benefits Of A Hydro-Solar Power Fusion, Abe Mckay
Floatovoltaics: Quantifying The Benefits Of A Hydro-Solar Power Fusion, Abe Mckay
Pomona Senior Theses
To slow climate change, humans should take immediate and widespread action. One way to slow climate change is by switching to switch to renewable power plants such as solar fields. Recently, pioneering companies have built solar fields on water bodies. This study found that such a pairing of water and solar could increase production efficiency by 8-10% through panel cooling, save millions of liters of water from evaporation, and produce energy with under-utilized space.

The Challenge Of Drug Trafficking To Democratic Governance And Human Security In West Africa, David E. Brown Mr.
The Challenge Of Drug Trafficking To Democratic Governance And Human Security In West Africa, David E. Brown Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
View the Executive Summary
International criminal networks mainly from Latin America and Africa—some with links to terrorism—are turning West Africa into a key global hub for the distribution, wholesaling, and production of illicit drugs. These groups represent an existential threat to democratic governance of already fragile states in the subregion because they are using narco-corruption to stage coups d’état, hijack elections, and co-opt or buy political power. Besides a spike in drug-related crime, narcotics trafficking is also fraying West Africa’s traditional social fabric and creating a public health crisis, with hundreds of thousands of new drug addicts. While the inflow …
