Worker Experiences Of Accessibility In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Kate Lowe, Mariana E. Marmol
Worker Experiences Of Accessibility In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Kate Lowe, Mariana E. Marmol
UNOTI Publications
Existing research has identified transportation challenges that low-income workers face, including a spatial mismatch between suburban entry level-jobs and urban low-income workers. These studies rely on travel models and secondary data and thus may not capture the temporal or other constraints that low-income workers experience. To better understand mobility patterns and accessibility as experienced, this analysis considers commute choices and perceptions of accessibility. Findings are based on open-ended surveys with 50 low-income workers in New Orleans and its inner suburbs. According to a sizable share of respondents (40%), transportation problems do not preclude applying to jobs. Black and centrally located …
Walking In The City, Renia Ehrenfeucht, Justice Mcpherson
Walking In The City, Renia Ehrenfeucht, Justice Mcpherson
UNOTI Publications
Motivated by traffic congestion, excessive energy use and poor health outcomes, planning and public health researchers have developed an extensive body of research that examines walking and other active transport as well as walking for recreation. In different discussions, walking has become a newly interesting subject and method to understand urban (and non urban) life, and a growing number of researchers have sought to understa nd mobility, the social experience and functions of walking and its cultural meanings. These areas of research rarely overlap. The latter has the potential for enriching the research about active travel and physical activity and, …

Shen And Cinema In 1930s Shanghai, Ling Zhang
Shen And Cinema In 1930s Shanghai, Ling Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Shen and Cinema in 1930s Shanghai" Ling Zhang analyzes the film十字街頭 (1937) (Crossroads) in relation to the influence from foreign film practice and concepts from Hollywood and Soviet cinema in 1930s Shanghai. By an analysis of the film's cinematic style, Zhang explores the transcultural and transmedial possibilities and potentials in the context of film and film culture in the 1930s and the unruly energy and unique aesthetic characteristics embedded in the process of creative mimesis and transplantation. While in the 1930s Chinese cinema had an ambivalent and paradoxical attitude to US-American and Soviet films, Chinese filmmaker …
Transnational Socialist Imaginary And The Proletarian Woman In China, Anup Grewal
Transnational Socialist Imaginary And The Proletarian Woman In China, Anup Grewal
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Transnational Socialist Imaginary and the Proletarian Woman in China" Anup Grewal discusses 1930s Shanghai and representations of the proletarian woman in relation to the intellectual New Woman and the fashionable Modern Girl. Grewal considers the concept of the proletarian woman in socialist culture first within the context of a local and global field of contending modernist visions of femininity, class, and the city. Next, Grewal analyses how the figure of the Chinese proletarian woman activates a socialist transnationality through shared formal and narrative innovations of translational leftist literature and cinema. Through her analysis, Grewal suggests how the …

Gis-Based Flood Analysis For Adequate Flood Mitigation In An Unplanned Urban Area; The Case Of Pikine Dagoudane In Dakar County, Senegal, Sokhna Helene Diop
Gis-Based Flood Analysis For Adequate Flood Mitigation In An Unplanned Urban Area; The Case Of Pikine Dagoudane In Dakar County, Senegal, Sokhna Helene Diop
Masters Theses
Since 1989, Pikine Dagoudane, in the suburbs of Dakar City has faced several flooding events, resulting in economic loss, environmental degradation and severe disturbance of the social life of the residents. The mitigation programs implemented have not appeared to provide any relief since 2000. Review of the existing literature on the crisis has revealed that the general scale of the studies, and the insufficient attention to some of the major factors could be accounted for such little efficiency. This thesis applies a different approach, based on a small area and focusing mainly on topographic characteristics, to provide a better understanding …

Nigerian Unity: In The Balance, Gerald Mcloughlin Mr., Clarence J. Bouchat (Usaf, Ret.) Lieutenant Colonel
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
View the Executive Summary
Nigeria’s future as a unified state is in jeopardy. Those who make or execute U.S. policy will find it difficult to advance U.S. interests in Africa without an understanding of the pressures that tear and bind Nigeria. Despite this, the centrifugal forces that tear at the country and the centripetal forces that have kept it whole are not well understood and rarely examined. After establishing Nigeria’s importance to the United State as a cohesive and functioning state, this monograph examines the historic, religious, cultural, political, physical, demographic, and economic factors that will determine Nigeria’s fate. It …

Spatial Factors Impacting Non-Motorized Exposures And Crash Risks, Farhad Abasahl
Masters Theses
This research investigates spatial factors, that impact non-motorized exposures and crashes, and examines the relationship between exposure at signalized intersections and crash frequencies involving pedestrians and bicycles at a census tract level. The four Michigan cities of Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Flint and Grand Rapids are examined. After completing an extensive literature review to provide a list of required data, 92 intersections are selected from the four cities to collect pedestrian and bicyclist counts. Five-year crash records, special attractions, non-motorized facilities and transportation infrastructure data for the four cities are gathered for the four cities. This data are later mapped …
The Effectiveness Of The New Town Policy In Managing Growth And Congestion In Mega Cities: A Case Study Of Lagos, Nigeria New Town Policy, Abolaji Samson Olanipekun
The Effectiveness Of The New Town Policy In Managing Growth And Congestion In Mega Cities: A Case Study Of Lagos, Nigeria New Town Policy, Abolaji Samson Olanipekun
Masters Theses
One of the major challenges facing municipal governments of megacities in developing countries is shortage of urban infrastructures relative to population growth. Because cities play important role in the economic development of every nation, problems confronting them require proactive policy measures by the government. One such mega city is Lagos, Nigeria. From 1962 to 2006, the population of Lagos grew from 1,135,805 to 17.5 million. Crammed on a 2200 square kilometer land area of which 18.9%, Lagos population is projected to reach 20.5 million by 2015, an explosion largely driven by the non-regulatory internal migration system. The result of this …
Data Storage Alternatives For A Gridded Crop Disease Risk Forecasting System, Paul J. Roehsner
Data Storage Alternatives For A Gridded Crop Disease Risk Forecasting System, Paul J. Roehsner
Masters Theses
Three separate storage technologies able to serve gridded data were selected for comparison of performance in terms of providing speed and expandability to a crop disease forecasting system. The three storage technologies chosen were PostgreSQL (a relational database management system), MongoDB (NoSQL system), and netCDF files. Speed tests were performed for each by running two different crop disease risk forecasting models requiring data of different spatiotemporal resolutions. Multiple trials were done using different storage hardware. Systems were then qualitatively compared for expandability by noting the process involved in adding successive crop disease forecasting models.
It was found that due to …
Applying Sustainability From A Systems Perspective:, Timothy Brophy
Applying Sustainability From A Systems Perspective:, Timothy Brophy
Master's Theses
Becoming sustainable is no longer an option. Current industry methods will not be able to support the necessary changes our growing society demands. In order to keep up with ever increasing demands industry will be aimed toward making major system changes toward a fully sustainable model. As of right now only basic sustainability actions have been put in place. Industry needs to make a strategic change toward resilient systems with an end goal of evolving into fully biomimic systems. This thesis covers a brief history of production leading to the Industrial Revolution which created a need for increased sustainability efforts. …
The Development Of An Electronic Data Collection Tool And Comparison Of The Electronic And Manual Methods Of Land Use Inventory, Wesley M. Catanzaro
The Development Of An Electronic Data Collection Tool And Comparison Of The Electronic And Manual Methods Of Land Use Inventory, Wesley M. Catanzaro
Master's Theses
An important component of Planning Information Systems for municipal planning agencies is a comprehensive land use inventory that provides information on the location, distribution, and intensity of land uses throughout a community. This data is a necessary prerequisite for the informed creation of planning documents such as General Plans, Specific Plans, Housing Inventories, and Climate Action Plans. Beyond location, distribution and intensity of land uses, planners may also wish to incorporate additional information at the parcel level, such as the number of housing or commercial units, building condition, and/or access and connectivity to adjacent streets. Because some of this information …

What Comes After The Boom? Baby Boomers In Santa Maria, California A Market Study For People's Self Help Housing, Elizabeth Anne Brighton
Master's Theses
This Master’s Project is separated into two parts: the introduction and background informing an affordable senior housing market study, and a market study prepared for People’s Self Help Housing (PSHH). The introduction begins by providing current and future trends for seniors at the national and state levels. This includes discussion of the “Baby Boomer” age cohort and their rapid growth and potential impact to the housing market. The introduction then describes challenges facing developers of affordable senior housing. These challenges include the type, location, and funding sources for future senior housing projects. All federal funding sources for affordable senior housing …

Explaining The Unexplainable: A New Cultural Outlook On H. P. Lovecraft’S Cthulhu Mythos, Erika L. Mutter
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Although the majority of the scholarship on H. P. Lovecraft focuses on the idea of nihilism as the purpose of the Cthulhu mythos, the exploration of three stories The Nameless City, The Whisperer in Darkness, and The Shadow over Innsmouth disproves this overly basic and irrelevant reasoning. Through a cultural studies lens, there is a parallel between the curiosity and fear surrounding the other within the text and those same emotions felt towards the immigrants coming into America during the 1920s. This argument analyzes the transformation of the relationship between the narrator and the aliens, showcasing how this otherness can …

Physical Properties Of Pectin Aqueous Solutions Containing Sunflower Wax, Erica R. Baümler, Amalia A. Carelli, Silvana Martini
Physical Properties Of Pectin Aqueous Solutions Containing Sunflower Wax, Erica R. Baümler, Amalia A. Carelli, Silvana Martini
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
The aim of this study is to investigate the physical properties of aqueous solutions of pectin (PA) containing sunflower wax (SFW), which are used as a basis for producing edible films. The stability and the rheological and microstructural characteristics of SFW/PA mixtures were evaluated. SFW/PA mixtures formed oil-in-water emulsions that were milky and opaque in appearance and were stable towards phase separation. Polarized micrographs revealed the presence of wax crystals, whose size decreased as pectin concentration increased. The rheological behavior of the aqueous solutions of pectin containing different amounts of SFW were best described by the generalized power law model …

I See, I Think I Wonder: An Evaluation Of Journaling As A Critical Reflective Practice Tool For Aiding Teachers In Challenging Or Confronting Contexts, Geoffrey M. Lowe, Peter Prout, Karen Murcia
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In October 2011, five selected Western Australian teachers took part in a teacher mentoring project in Tanzania. The teachers spent a month embedded in local primary and secondary schools, working collaboratively with their Tanzanian counterparts. As a strategy for making sense of their experiences, each teacher was asked to maintain a reflective journal, using the Harvard Visible Thinking Routine of ‘see, think, wonder’ as a critical structure for guiding their journal writing. The purpose of this article is to discuss the effectiveness of journaling for teachers in challenging teaching situations, and the usefulness of the Harvard approach in structuring the …

Reading And Note Taking In Monological And Dialogical Classes In The Social Sciences, Manuela Cartolari, Paula Carlino, Laura M. Colombo
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This qualitative study explores the uses of reading and note-taking in two pre-service teacher training Social Sciences courses. Data analysis of in-depth interviews with professors and students, class observations and course materials suggested two polar teaching styles according to how bibliography was included in the course and the presence or absence of dialogicality. In one course, the professor assumed that students should read texts on their own prerogative. As monological lectures were given, they mostly studied from their class-notes. In the other course, the professor held class discussions based on readings that took place in and outside the classroom. According …

Entrepreneurship, Hardship, And Gamesmanship: Modern Piracy As A Dry Endeavor, Selina Maclaren
Entrepreneurship, Hardship, And Gamesmanship: Modern Piracy As A Dry Endeavor, Selina Maclaren
Chicago Journal of International Law
Piracy has reemerged in the past decade, but international laws lag behind While modern-day piracy threatens lives and industries, antipiracy efforts are constrained by international legal definitions written centuries ago to address a crime that looked radically different from its twenty-first-century counterpart. Today, piracy networks are increasingly sophisticated and land-based, but piracy laws define the crime as one occurring on the high seas. Handcuffed by the high seas requirement, nations prosecute only junior pirates while pirate kingpins operate from the safety of land. In recent months, lower piracy rates have promised stability and masked the urgency of the threat. Although …

Converting Houses Into Churches: The Mobility, Fission, And Sacred Networks Of Evangelical House Churches In Sri Lanka, Orlando Woods
Converting Houses Into Churches: The Mobility, Fission, And Sacred Networks Of Evangelical House Churches In Sri Lanka, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper I examine the processes and politics associated with the formation of evangelical house churches in Sri Lanka. In doing so, I show how the sacred space of the house church is constructed through the development of sacred networks, which emerge when a group of Christians assemble for prayer and worship. Sacred networks grant the house church an important degree of mobility, but they also encourage church fission. Whilst the house church enables evangelical groups to grow in hostile environments like that of Sri Lanka, it is often a superficial form of growth that is unsustainable in the …
The Spatial: A Forgotten Dimension Of Property, Paul Babie
The Spatial: A Forgotten Dimension Of Property, Paul Babie
San Diego Law Review
This Article explores, such a spatial turn in the case of property theory requires further elaboration and exploration. First, analytically, the spatial turn can be used to reassemble what we already know about property to recognize expressly the spatial dimension of property, thus revealing what has always been there but which has rarely been named and discussed: property emerges from, exists in, and is replicated through space. Second, and equally important, normatively, revealing the spatial dimension adds context to the social understanding of property and thereby allows us to see and encourage further exploration of the role of property as …
Law And Other-Spaces: Legal Geographies Of The Sinai Peninsula, Tracy Allison Young
Law And Other-Spaces: Legal Geographies Of The Sinai Peninsula, Tracy Allison Young
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has joined an unfortunate category of what I call ‘Outlaw spaces’: spaces that are characterized and understood as being shaped by crisis, chaos and collapse. Outlaw spaces –which include the “black holes,” the “breeding grounds,” the “security vacuums” and the “no man’s lands” that have proliferated in the post-9/11 era—are constructed through the interplay of both legal and imaginative geographies. Mapping and labeling certain zones as lawless, chaotic and dangerous is deceptive. There is nothing natural about Outlaw spaces and it is not always clear where they begin and where they end. While Outlaw …

Advertisements are the de-facto currency of the Internet with many popular applications (e.g. Angry Birds) and online services (e.g., YouTube) relying on advertisement generated revenue. However, the current economic models and mechanisms for mobile advertising are fundamentally not sustainable and far from ideal. In particular, as we show, applications which use mobile advertising are capable of using significant amounts of a mobile users' critical resources without being controlled or held accountable. This paper seeks to redress this situation by enabling advertisement supported applications to become significantly more "user-friendly". To this end, we present the design and implementation of CAMEO, a …

Six Decades Of Total Factor Productivity Change And Sources Of Growth In Bangladesh Agriculture (1948–2008), S Rahman, R Salim
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This study applies the Färe–Primont index to calculate total factor productivity (TFP) indices for agriculture in 17 regions of Bangladesh covering a 61-year period (1948–2008). It decomposes the TFP index into six finer components (technical change, technical-, scale- and mix-efficiency changes, residual scale- and residual mix-efficiency changes). Results reveal that TFP grew at an average rate of 0.57% p.a. led by the Chittagong, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dinajpur and Noakhali regions. TFP growth is largely powered by technological progress estimated at 0.74% p.a. Technical efficiency improvement is negligible (0.01% p.a.) due to stagnant efficiency in most of the regions. Decline in scale …
