From Slurs To Science, Racism To Revisionism: White Nationalist Rhetors And Legitimation In The Stormfront Community, Claire Davies Rhodes Jul 2013

From Slurs To Science, Racism To Revisionism: White Nationalist Rhetors And Legitimation In The Stormfront Community, Claire Davies Rhodes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While on the surface mainstream discussions about race appear to encompass the values and ideologies associated with egalitarianism, subtle and at times not so subtle discussions continue to disparage groups and individuals who have been historically associated with the minority. The growing existence of hate groups illustrates that arguments for these extreme ideologies are not only present but for some individuals are gaining in acceptance. For this reason, I perform a critical discourse analysis of the language of one of the most popular and prolific White Nationalist groups on the Internet, Stormfront. In particular, I examine how scientific and revisionist …

Obtained By One's Own Hands: A Theory On The Middle Class Of Ancient Egypt And Funerary Stelae Of The First Intermediate Period, Christopher Walter Stelter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis is an exercise in applying classic and contemporary anthropological class theory to an ancient Egyptian context. The primary goal of this study is to argue for the emergence of a middle class during the First Intermediate Period (2118 - 1980 BC). The rise and fall of the Second Style in relief carvings found on funerary stelae will be related to the emergence of this class. As the class emerged, it took for itself this artistic style as one of its defining characteristics. By its conclusion, this thesis will have proved that a middle class did indeed arise during …

Determination Of Valuable Areas For Migratory Songbirds Along The East-Asian Australasian Flyway (Eeaf), And An Approach For Strategic Conservation Planning, Maria Beiring Jul 2013

Determination Of Valuable Areas For Migratory Songbirds Along The East-Asian Australasian Flyway (Eeaf), And An Approach For Strategic Conservation Planning, Maria Beiring

Faculty

Having valuable high-quality stopover sites available for migratory birds is one of the key factors for the success of migration. However, beside the conservation of breeding and wintering grounds, the actual protection of valuable stopover sites has often been somewhat neglected. Overall 93 of 315 passerine species along the East-Asian Australasian Flyway (EEAF) are declining. That’s the highest overall number of threatened passerines on any known flyway. Additionally, the high human density in South-East Asia and the ongoing degradation of natural resources further poses a serious problem and threat to migratory songbirds and necessitates urgent action. This study aims to …

Educating The Globe: Foreign Students And Cultural Exchange At Tuskegee Institute, 1898-1935, Brian Marc Edward Mcclure

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation offers a comprehensive and comparative analysis of foreign students at Tuskegee Institute between 1892 and 1935. During this time, aspiring young people from the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia coalesced on the rural Alabama campus, creating a unique cultural space. It became a space not only for intellectual exchange, but also for cultural pride, political solidarity, and global exchange. Although much has been written about the school's founder, Booker T. Washington, very little has been written about the role his school played in forging and sustaining a global community. This dissertation charts the cultural, historical, and contextual significance of …

The Respectability Trap: Gender Conventions In 20th Century Movements For Social Change, Georgina Hickey Jul 2013

The Respectability Trap: Gender Conventions In 20th Century Movements For Social Change, Georgina Hickey

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

An analysis of how a variety of women in 19th and 20th century movements for social change in the United States negotiated normative gender expectations in both their activism and their personal lives. While challenging norms or using traditional norms as a part of a movement tactic are both common in social movements, women leaders still sometimes found themselves in a ‘respectability trap’ when they reflexively applied the dictates of respectable behavior. In these moments, the often invisible privileges attached to the social recognition of a woman’s respectability – and implied morality – become visible. Women who eschewed traditional norms …

Remote Sensing Of Green Leaf Area Index In Maize And Soybean: From Close-Range To Satellite, Anthony L. Nguy-Robertson

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation seeks to explore alternative methodologies for estimating green leaf area index (LAI) and crop developmental stages. Specifically this research [1] developed an approach for creating a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) high spatial resolution product for estimating green LAI on the base of data collected using two different close-range sensors. It was determined that the vegetation indices (VIs) Wide Dynamic Range Vegetation Index (WDRVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index 2 (EVI2) were capable of accurate estimation of green LAI from MODIS 250 m data using models developed from hyperspectral (RMSE < 0.69 m2 m-2; CV < 33%) or multispectral sensors (RMSE < 0.69 m2 m-2; …

Analyzing Functionality Of Landmines And Clearance Depth As A Tool To Define Clearance Methodology, Martin Jebens Jul 2013

Analyzing Functionality Of Landmines And Clearance Depth As A Tool To Define Clearance Methodology, Martin Jebens

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Mine contamination from World War II remains in Skallingen on Denmark’s western coast. Skallingen’s dynamic coastal environment caused the mines to shift in the soil, and time, salt water and soil depth rendered some of the landmines inactive. Comparative digital-terrain models, in addition to surveys and analysis of fuze and detonator functionality, enabled clearance personnel to establish clearance depth and related criteria and facilitated efficient clearance efforts. As a result, the last functional mines were cleared in June 2012 after six years of effort.

Mythcon 44 - Green And Growing: The Land And Its Inhabitants In Fantasy, The Mythopoeic Society Jul 2013

Mythcon 44 - Green And Growing: The Land And Its Inhabitants In Fantasy, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

How does mythopoeic literature address the relationship between the land and its inhabitants, between the wild and the cultivated? What are their respective moral values, their dangers, and delights? Tangled forests, majestic trees, the ordered fields, the carefully tended gardens; or untamed, wild beauty: each offers a different kind of bounty to those who would live off the land. What role do advocates and protectors of the land play in fantasy literature, particularly as personified in characters such as Yavanna, Radagast, Sam Gamgee, and, of course, Tom Bombadil?

Spatial Patterns Of Mobile Regolith Thickness And Meteoric 10be In Gordon Gulch, Front Range, Co, Neil Shea

Master's Theses

The Boulder Creek Critical Zone Observatory (BcCZO) aims to understand the history, architecture, and evolution of hillslopes found within the diverse topography and climate regimes of the Colorado Front Range. Here, I present the results of a systematic study that documents spatial patterns of mobile regolith thickness and uses concentrations of meteoric 10Be to assess the mechanisms and time scales of sediment transport and storage in Gordon Gulch, a mid-elevation watershed representative of topography throughout the region. Gordon Gulch lies within the unglaciated portion of the Front Range and is hypothesized to be in long-term steady state evolution. This …

Using Gis To Teach Placed-Based Mathematics In Rural Classrooms, Jacqueline Leonard, Nicole M. Russell, Robert M. Hobbs, Heather Buchanan Jul 2013

Using Gis To Teach Placed-Based Mathematics In Rural Classrooms, Jacqueline Leonard, Nicole M. Russell, Robert M. Hobbs, Heather Buchanan

The Rural Educator

The purpose of this article is to promote the use of GIS and place-based education (PBE) in rural mathematics classrooms. The pedagogy of place is disappearing from rural communities because of declining enrollments, lack of support, and federal mandates to focus more on basic academic skills. However, PBE does not stand in opposition to standards-based instruction and academic achievement; rather, it enhances instructional strategies for getting at these aims. We present examples of place that can be used to engage rural students in meaningful mathematics activities to improve their content knowledge and problem-solving ability. Barriers exist to full implementation of …

Involving The Parents Of English Language Learners In A Rural Area: Focus On The Dynamics Of Teacher-Parent Interactions, Jenna M. Shim Jul 2013

Involving The Parents Of English Language Learners In A Rural Area: Focus On The Dynamics Of Teacher-Parent Interactions, Jenna M. Shim

The Rural Educator

In this study, the author suggests that the current ELL parental involvement model often overlooks the structural aspects and power asymmetry of parent-teacher relationships that can hinder productive collaboration. In doing so, the author uses postcolonial theory as a conceptual lens to investigate the dynamics of ELL parent-teacher interactions from rural ELL parent perspectives by looking at those interactions as intercultural relations. The study uses a general qualitative methodology to explore the dynamics of ELL parent-teacher interactions. Three broad themes that emerged as obstacles that inhibit productive ELL parent-teacher interactions were (1) teachers’judgments toward ELL students and their parents, (2) …

Perspectives Of A Rural Music Educator: A Narrative Journey Through 'Sense Of Place', Janet Spring Jul 2013

Perspectives Of A Rural Music Educator: A Narrative Journey Through 'Sense Of Place', Janet Spring

The Rural Educator

There is a scarcity of research in contemporary rural studies in Canada, particularly pertaining to education. Discrepancies exist in definitions of rural and rurality. What is the meaning of rural, and how do educators define their teaching praxes? This study explores how one music teacher negotiates her role identity in a rural setting through the conceptual framework of sense of place, and how ‘place’ influences her education praxis. Grounded in the narrative methodological perspectives of Connelly and Clandinin (2006), this study investigates the lived experiences of one educator from a place-based lens. Findings indicate that a place-based curriculum may highlight …

Freely Flowing: Openly Accessible Sources For Streaming Video, Deg Farrelly Jul 2013

Freely Flowing: Openly Accessible Sources For Streaming Video, Deg Farrelly

Charleston Library Conference

There is considerable disagreement within the academic and library spheres as to what can be done to make streaming content available. The process of providing streaming content is expensive, labor intensive, and time consuming. This process, however, doesn’t always require prolonged licensing negotiations, expenditure of precious materials budgets, or large investment of personnel time and effort to digitize, upload, and maintain content. There are many websites that provide quality videos that libraries and media centers can both access and provide access to with minimal effort. This paper offers a list of these legal, openly accessible resources, along with a brief …

If You’Ve Got It, Flaunt It!: Refocusing A Collection With No Connection, Jennifer Ditkoff, Rodney Obien Jul 2013

If You’Ve Got It, Flaunt It!: Refocusing A Collection With No Connection, Jennifer Ditkoff, Rodney Obien

Charleston Library Conference

Many libraries have a unique collection within their space that holds value and importance but has lost its connection to the college curriculum and the undergraduate research on campus. These collections may have had different people overseeing them over time or had changes in funding. They might have been created without thinking about the big picture. The paper examines one college library’s experience of turning an underused and unfocused collection into a vibrant and relevant part of the library through collaboration with key constituents in the academic and local community and staying true to the mission and vision.

The Effect Of Geography And Personal Experience On Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction, Erin Marchand Jul 2013

Catron County is within the wolf recovery zone and residents must deal with consequences of having wolves in the area. Harding County is located on the opposite side of the state and is removed from the wolf reintroduction area. Understanding the perceived concerns and benefits of the wolf reintroduction program and if those concerns change based on geographic proximity to the reintroduction can reveal whether cultural biases or personal experience with …

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell Jul 2013

To Thrive, Work, And Live: Progress Toward And Challenges To Sustainability On The Frei Gondim Settlement, Pernambuco, Brazil, William Maxwell

Geography ETDs

The sugar plantation zone of Pernambuco, Brazil, with a conservative culture forged out of chattel slave history, has been the most challenging region for the Brazilian landless peasants movement to penetrate in order to implement agrarian reform. The movement founded the Frei Gondim Settlement in the heart of the region in 1994 in order to present an alternative to the pollution of sugar monoculture and the injustices of landlessness around it. This thesis holds that the settlement represents a true alternative, but that the juxtaposition of a settlement socially isolated from its surroundings with a mode of production in which …

The Effect Of Airport Delays On The Evolution Of The U.S. Air Travel Network, Eric Cox Jul 2013

The Effect Of Airport Delays On The Evolution Of The U.S. Air Travel Network, Eric Cox

Geography ETDs

An investigation is made into the question of how U.S. airlines respond to airport-based delays at domestic airports using data from the FAAs On-Time Performance database and aircraft inventories for major U.S. Airlines. Three delay mitigation techniques are studied: increasing aircraft size, rerouting transit passengers, and decreasing schedule peaking. Regression analysis is used to determine where significant relationships exist between study variables and the overall level of flight delay for all airlines at each airport they serve. T-Tests indicate schedule peaking is more likely to be increased at airports with higher levels of delay, but that no specific airline undertakes …

Remediation Of Sand Dune Blowouts Along Pipeline Right Of Ways., Knutt Peterson Jul 2013

Remediation Of Sand Dune Blowouts Along Pipeline Right Of Ways., Knutt Peterson

Geography ETDs

Blowouts in sand dunes along pipeline right of ways are a problem facing many pipeline maintenance companies, environmentalists, and public land managers. Blowouts form in sandy soils when the ground surface is not protected from seasonal winds. The ground surface becomes unprotected when there is a lack of vegetation covering the pipeline right of way. Most pipeline maintenance companies are using temporary mitigation methods. Results presented in this study demonstrate that there are low cost, long term solutions to the problem of blowouts along pipeline right of ways. Studies were conducted using three low cost mitigation methods. Branch piles showed …
