Perceptions Of Students At A Rural Mississippi Community College Regarding Employability, Cortney R. Harris
Perceptions Of Students At A Rural Mississippi Community College Regarding Employability, Cortney R. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Research studies show that there is a skills gap in American society today. This research study examined employability perceptions of community college students at a rural community college in Mississippi. Students were asked to complete an online survey that questioned the degree of importance placed on several employability skills, as well as their self-perceived competence levels at performing those skills. Likert-scale response set type questions were used to provide responses on importance and competence levels. After sending the survey invitation, 100 usable surveys were returned and analyzed for this research study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney procedures, …
Population-Level Genetic Structure Of Acmispon Argophyllus On The Channel Islands Of California, Gregory Lawrence Wheeler
Population-Level Genetic Structure Of Acmispon Argophyllus On The Channel Islands Of California, Gregory Lawrence Wheeler
Theses and Dissertations
The California Channel Islands present an ideal system in which to study unique biogeographical patterns seen in island systems near a mainland source, where spatial barriers are likely to limit gene flow without disrupting it completely. The islands also harbor a number of endemic taxa, suggesting that isolation from the mainland may be strong for some taxa. For this study, Acmispon argophyllus, a legume species found across five of the eight islands as well as on the mainland was used to test hypotheses at three spatial scales. Northern island populations have diverged into what potentially represents a new species; populations …
Developing A Multistage Model For Treponemal Disease Susceptibility, Sarah A (Sarah Ann) Mathena
Developing A Multistage Model For Treponemal Disease Susceptibility, Sarah A (Sarah Ann) Mathena
Theses and Dissertations
Despite numerous studies, little is known about the influential factors impacting treponemal disease susceptibility. Yet, forms of treponemal disease, specifically yaws, are a major source of morbidity in the developing world. Bioarchaeological materials may assist with deficit by testing full ranges of disease expression. This study explores the relationship between treponemal disease ecology, specifically yaws, and susceptibility through six southeastern United States archaeological samples. Results show early life health experiences have a relationship to later life disease expression. However, influences of climate may only be seen at a cross-regional level. Finally, although nutrition, as evidenced by subsistence strategy, may play …
An Assessment Of Human Vulnerability To Prolonged Cold In The Zeravshan Valley Of Tajikistan, R Bryson Touchstone
An Assessment Of Human Vulnerability To Prolonged Cold In The Zeravshan Valley Of Tajikistan, R Bryson Touchstone
Theses and Dissertations
The Central Asian country of Tajikistan is the poorest of the former Soviet republics; it is also prone to a plethora of natural hazards including mass wasting, flood, and extreme temperature. This thesis seeks to characterize how vulnerable rural Tajik mountain communities are to prolonged cold. The primary focus was in Navobod, in the Zeravshan Valley of Tajikistan, where semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 households, the village leader and doctor, and school staff. The results from the interviews were compared with GIS analysis of the region. Interviews indicated that the area is highly vulnerable to the impacts of prolonged …
Black-White, Black-Nonblack, And White-Nonwhite Residential Segregation In U.S. Metropolitan And Nonmetropolitan Areas, 1990-2010, Jed Raney Pressgrove
Black-White, Black-Nonblack, And White-Nonwhite Residential Segregation In U.S. Metropolitan And Nonmetropolitan Areas, 1990-2010, Jed Raney Pressgrove
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to examine racial residential segregation in U.S. metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. The study uses 1990-2010 decennial census data to answer a broad theoretical question: is the historical black-white color line being replaced by a black-nonblack or white-nonwhite color line? The results show that blackwhite segregation is higher than black-nonblack and white-nonwhite segregation in metropolitan areas, nonmetropolitan areas, and the United States as a whole. A multivariate analysis reveals that population size tends to be associated with higher segregation in metropolitan areas and lower segregation in nonmetropolitan areas. As a control variable, diversity seems to …
Urban Fringe And Transportation Corridor Convection-Diffusion Model For Anthropogenically-Initiated Wildfire Ignition Prediction, Ravi Raj Sadasivuni
Urban Fringe And Transportation Corridor Convection-Diffusion Model For Anthropogenically-Initiated Wildfire Ignition Prediction, Ravi Raj Sadasivuni
Theses and Dissertations
A novel approach for modeling anthropogenically-initiated wildfire ignition was developed that significantly advances the theoretical knowledge of human-wildfire interactions. Gravity interaction models that are commonly used for economic analyses associated with business competition were combined with fluid dynamics models that mimic human movement patterns to predict the probability of anthropogenically-initiated wildfire. Herein, a combined gravity interaction and fluid dynamics models is developed and validated for wildfire potential prediction against historic and current wildfire data. The study identified population centers and transportation corridors, in particular: proximity to railroads and roads; traffic volume; and density of the corridors as the most influential …
How Creative Professional Service Firms Internationalize: A Business Model Portfolio Approach, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin
How Creative Professional Service Firms Internationalize: A Business Model Portfolio Approach, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin
Conference Papers
Traditional theory of firm internationalization assumes all firms are homogeneous in their approach to managing uncertainties and implementing business strategies when internationalizing. A business model portfolio approach articulates a more complex process and suggests that firms adopt a portfolio of business models to balance uncertainties. Combining these two perspectives, this multiple case study research design explores how creative professional service firms (creative PSFs) internationalize. Creative PSFs such as architects are embedded in their local cultures, operating at the intersection of business and art. Our study reveals the complexities of creative PSF internationalization, showing that in contrast to existing explanations, multiple …

Home Is Always Calling: Determinants Of Civic Participation Among Zimbabwean Immigrants In Cape Town, South Africa, Rumbidzai R. Mufuka
Open Access Dissertations
This research project examines factors that have influenced community engagement among immigrants from Zimbabwe living in Cape Town, South Africa. A case study of PASSOP (an immigrant rights organization in Cape Town) tests existing theories on civic participation through interviews with immigrants, knowledgeable informants and activists. The study identifies reasons for leaving Zimbabwe and legal status in South Africa as factors that influence why undocumented immigrants participate in or withdraw from civil society in Cape Town. The results indicate that the conditions of the country of origin and the related reasons for leaving—political and economic degradation in Zimbabwe—heavily influence the …
“We Found Ourselves”—Music And Identity Among The Chinese American Diaspora In Miami, Yiyu Zhang
“We Found Ourselves”—Music And Identity Among The Chinese American Diaspora In Miami, Yiyu Zhang
Open Access Theses
Chinese American communities have been part of the United States since the 19th century. Presently, their high rates of immigration have made them one of this country’s fastest growing communities. However, in Miami, only 0.3% of the population are Chinese Americans. In this local setting, music serves, in the words of Su Zheng, as an important “signifier that produces complex cultural meanings.” Because traditional music forms one of the most significant aspects of music in China, it is critical to explore the extent to which Chinese American musical culture has developed and changed. This thesis discusses the function of Chinese …

Who Owns This Body? Enslaved Women's Claim On Themselves, Loucynda Elayne Sandeen
Who Owns This Body? Enslaved Women's Claim On Themselves, Loucynda Elayne Sandeen
Dissertations and Theses
During the antebellum period of U.S. slavery (1830-1861), many people claimed ownership of the enslaved woman's body, both legally and figuratively. The assumption that they were merely property, however, belies the unstable, shifting truths about bodily ownership. This thesis inquires into the gendered specifics and ambiguities of the law, the body, and women under slavery. By examining the particular bodily regulation and exploitation of enslaved women, especially around their reproductive labor, I suggest that new operations of oppression and also of resistance come into focus.
The legal structure recognized enslaved women in the interest of owners, and this limitation was …
Scenario Development And Analysis Of Freshwater Ecosystem Services Under Land Cover And Climate Change In The Tualatin And Yamhill River Basins, Oregon, Robert Wesley Hoyer
Scenario Development And Analysis Of Freshwater Ecosystem Services Under Land Cover And Climate Change In The Tualatin And Yamhill River Basins, Oregon, Robert Wesley Hoyer
Dissertations and Theses
Humans make decisions within ecosystems to enhance their well-being, but choices can lead to unintended consequences. The ecosystem services (ES) approach supports decision-making that considers all environmental goods and services. Many challenges remain in the implementation of the ES approach like how specific ES vary through space and time. We address this research problem using the Tualatin and Yamhill river basins in northwestern Oregon as a study area. Freshwater ES are quantified and mapped with the spatially-explicit ES modeling tool, Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST). In chapter II, we develop a simple urban land cover change modeling …

Identification And Characterization Of Fine Particulate Matter Hot Spots On An Urban Arterial Corridor Integrating Probe Vehicle, Traffic And Land Use Data, Katherine Eleanor Bell
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to explore the use of integrated probe vehicle, traffic and land use data to identify and characterize fine particulate matter (PM[subscript 2.5]) hot spot locations on urban arterial corridors. In addition, a preliminary analysis is conducted to consider volatile organic compound (VOC) hot spot locations. A pollutant hot spot is defined as a location on a corridor in which the mean pollutant concentrations are consistently above the 85th percentile of pollutant concentrations when compared to all locations along the corridor. In order to collect data for this study, an electric vehicle was equipped with …

Striae Re-Negotiated: The Self-Definition Of The Yiddish-Speaking Jewish Community In The Era Of Mexicos Raza Cósmica, Beth Merfish
Research Papers
This essay examines Mexican Jewish documents through which that community navigated the political terrain of post-Revolution Mexico. Central to this discussion is tension between Jewish desires to become part of this new nation and the imperative to remain a discreet cultural and religious community. I first examine the pressures of assimilation in 1920s Mexico exemplified by José Vasconcelos 1925 La raza cosmica and then probe the Yiddish-speaking Jewish community's response and self-definition in relation to a rapidly developing nation, using two case studies: the Jewish community's political position publicized in the 1929 Asociación de Jóvenes Israelitas de México bulletin and …

Land Grabs And Implications On Food Sovereignty And Social Justice In Senegal, Joanna Lafrancesca
Land Grabs And Implications On Food Sovereignty And Social Justice In Senegal, Joanna Lafrancesca
Master's Theses
This thesis focuses on the case study of Senegal to examine the implications of large- scale land acquisitions on the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. I investigate the diverse perspectives of market enthusiasts, human rights organizations, peasants, the state, and international financial organizations on large-scale land acquisitions. Based on primary research, I argue that the state of Senegal plays an active role in permitting “land grabs” and that they pose a threat to food sovereignty among Senegalese host communities. Lastly, I argue there needs to be a broader understanding of long-term consequences and risks to insure social justice in areas affected …

Every Town Is All The Same When You've Left Your Heart In The Portland Rain: Representations Of Portland Place And Local Identity In Portland Popular Lyrics, Meghan Andrea Kearney
Dissertations and Theses
This study looks at how place and local identity of Portland are described within music lyrics from Portland, Oregon popular indie-rock artists. Employing a constant comparative analysis on a set of 1,201 songs from 21 different popular Portland indie-rock artists, the themes of landscapes and climate were found to represent place, and themes of lifestyles and attitudes represented local identity. Reviewing the uncovered themes showed a strong connection between representations of place and local identity within lyrics and common stereotypes or understandings of the city of Portland and its indie-rock music scene. The results of this study illustrate how place …

Walking As Experimental Poiesis, Katherine E. Bash
Walking As Experimental Poiesis, Katherine E. Bash
Artl@s Bulletin
This experimental text, created by way of bricolage, is a form of mapping that activates relationships between the experience of the body, meanings accrued over time, and the inhabited landscape. This work situates the body as the first site and engages walking to open up fields of experimental making of meaning through experiences collected (visually, textually, physically, etc.) along the way. These experiences are forms of ‘data’ that over time, gain more meaning as the archive expands to include new references. Specifically, the walk being mapped begins in 2004 in Florianopolis, Santa Caterina, Brazil, and continues temporally through to today.

Les “Marchands De Tableaux” Dans Le Bottin Du Commerce : Une Approche Globale Du Marché De L’Art À Paris Entre 1815 Et 1955, Félicie De Maupeou, Léa Saint-Raymond
Artl@s Bulletin
This article reconsiders the evolution of the Parisian art market using a homogeneous, stable, and diachronic source: the Bottin du commerce. The systematic study of the "art dealers" section from 1815 to 1955 provides a global perspective on the dynamics of the art trade and the transformations of the profession. After first developing under Louis XVIII, the market stabilizes and structures itself during the Second Empire. It then experiences a slowdown in the 1870s before taking off again and becoming fully competitive in the 1890s. The factors of this evolution are connected to the real economy - national and international …
Filling The Blank Space Of Global Art Peripheries: Measurements Of Art Mobility And Their Ambivalence In Nairobi, Kenya, Olivier Marcel
Filling The Blank Space Of Global Art Peripheries: Measurements Of Art Mobility And Their Ambivalence In Nairobi, Kenya, Olivier Marcel
Artl@s Bulletin
In recent years, art made in Africa, particularly in the metropolitan context, has witnessed a substantial increase in attention coming from transnational institutions. While many researchers have pointed out the deceitful nature of contemporary art’s globalization, this turn of events still challenges the way we conceive the space of contemporary art. In this paper I use cartography as a critical tool to approach the international mobility facilitated by two art organizations based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Les Xx In The City: An Artists’ Neighborhood In Brussels, Laurence Brogniez, Tatiana Debroux
Artl@s Bulletin
In this article we focus upon the spatiality of the artistic circle Les XX, in Belgium and in Europe. We study the installation of the circle’s members in both Brussels and the context of the city’s local artistic geography. One zone seems to have been a focus of the group’s creative and social life: the suburb of Ixelles, in particular, the neighborhood around the rue de l’Abbaye. This area was home to many artists, including Anna Boch, whose villa became a sort of second home to Les XX. Through cartographic analysis and the description of this environment, we bring into …
Visualizing Spaces, Flows, Agents, And Networks Of The Art Markets In The 18th Century: Some Methodological Challenges, Sophie Raux
Artl@s Bulletin
This visualization project originated in a program entitled “Art Markets in Europe 1300-1800, Emergence, Development, Networks.” The latter focused mainly on the movement and dynamics of the art markets of the early modern age: Who were the agents of this mobility? What were its mechanisms? What idea do we have of the numbers of pictures circulating in Europe? Through what channels and networks were they distributed? These questions led the team to work out an experimental program of visualization aiming at endowing our research outcome with a visual and synthetic dimension that would help us renew our approaches and generate …

Mapping Eastern Europe: Cartography And Art History, Katarzyna Murawska-Muthesius
Artl@s Bulletin
This paper compares maps of Eastern Europe, beginning from the map of Slavic lands by Josef Pavol Šafárik of 1842, and it claims that cartographic imagery has played a significant role in the legitimisation of the region’s collective identity. It argues that the adoption the map as a tool of art history, in order to spatialise and quantify the understanding of art, cannot bypass the postmodern critique of the map. It reflects on the overlap between the approaches and methods of critical cartography and critical art history, as well as on the mutual benefits of the visual turn in cartography …
Spaces Of Arts: Wrap-Up Comments, David M. Lubin
Spaces Of Arts: Wrap-Up Comments, David M. Lubin
Artl@s Bulletin
In this personal, polemical, and ad hoc response to papers given at the Spaces of Arts conference at Purdue University in September, 2012, Lubin identifies potential problem areas for geographical and digital art history. He admonishes its practitioners not to replace hermeneutical interpretation of art objects and art movements with positivist aggregations of data and inflated faith in digital technology. Likewise, he warns against a utopian hope that maps, charts, and graphs can ever be enough to untangle the intransigent complexity of art and its embodiment of cultural and historical change.
