Measuring The Temporal Instability Of Land Change Using The Flow Matrix, D. S.M. Runfola, Robert Gilmore Pontius Sep 2013

Measuring The Temporal Instability Of Land Change Using The Flow Matrix, D. S.M. Runfola, Robert Gilmore Pontius

Geography

This article introduces the Flow matrix, which expresses the sizes of transitions among categories between two time points. We use the Flow matrix to create a metric R that measures the instability of annual change among time intervals that partition the time extent. Specifically, R is the proportion of change that would need to be reallocated to different time interval(s) to achieve uniform change during the time extent. This article computes R for 10 Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and for seven case studies from published land change data. Of the 10 LTER sites analyzed, the Andrews site in …

Open Innovation In Plant Genetic Resources For Food And Agriculture, Chidi Oguamanam Sep 2013

Open Innovation In Plant Genetic Resources For Food And Agriculture, Chidi Oguamanam

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

Contemporary global order for the promotion of innovation exaggerates the role of intellectual property (IP) as a closed proprietary model of knowledge production and protection. Partly as a boomerang effect of that order or partly as a coincidence of the phenomenal rise in the information and communication technologies or both, there has been increased gravitation toward open, collaborative, shared, communal and interdependent models of innovation. This trend is typified by the rise of open software movement and cognate endeavours. The article attempts to transpose the open innovation dynamic to the context of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGFA); …

Beyond Peak Reservoir Storage? A Global Estimate Of Declining Water Storage Capacity In Large Reservoirs, Dominik Wisser, Steve Frolking, Stephen Hagen, Marc F. P. Bierkens Sep 2013

Beyond Peak Reservoir Storage? A Global Estimate Of Declining Water Storage Capacity In Large Reservoirs, Dominik Wisser, Steve Frolking, Stephen Hagen, Marc F. P. Bierkens

Earth Sciences

Water storage is an important way to cope with temporal variation in water supply and demand. The storage capacity and the lifetime of water storage reservoirs can be significantly reduced by the inflow of sediments. A global, spatially explicit assessment of reservoir storage loss in conjunction with vulnerability to storage loss has not been done. We estimated the loss in reservoir capacity for a global data set of large reservoirs from 1901 to 2010, using modeled sediment flux data. We use spatially explicit population data sets as a proxy for storage demand and calculate storage capacity for all river basins …

Kuznetsov Naval Academy Game '13, Wargaming Department

Game Reports

The 2013 NWC-KNA War Game was conducted at the Naval War College in Newport, RI from 16-20 September, 2013. The game was the fifth in the series of annual war games that had been conceived during talks between the President of the Naval War College and Chief of the Kuznetsov Naval Academy in 2005. The war game series began in 2006, continued in 2007, but was interrupted until 2011, when the game series returned to the Newport, RI location. Following a successful 2011 restart of the war game series, the Kuznetsov Naval Academy hosted the 2012 game at its campus …

A Bridge Too Far? The Staten Island/Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Missed Connection, Cameron E. Gordon, Bukurije Bajrami, Nóra Tábori Santiago, Jonathan Peters Sep 2013

A Bridge Too Far? The Staten Island/Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Missed Connection, Cameron E. Gordon, Bukurije Bajrami, Nóra Tábori Santiago, Jonathan Peters

Journal of Public Transportation

Few urban areas are as economically and socially integrated as the New York City borough of Staten Island and the New Jersey communities of Bayonne and Jersey City just across the Hudson River. These strong links are illustrated by travel patterns across a north-south corridor from Staten Island up into Bayonne. Yet transit planning and development policy and implementation have been radically different in the two areas, with slow and, right now, stunted development of transit in Staten Island, New York City, as contrasted with the muscular and systematic approach taken in Bayonne and Jersey City, New Jersey. This paper …

Transit Deserts: The Gap Between Demand And Supply, Junfeng Jiao, Maxwell Dillivan Sep 2013

Transit Deserts: The Gap Between Demand And Supply, Junfeng Jiao, Maxwell Dillivan

Journal of Public Transportation

The term “transit desert” is a new concept that looks at the gap between level of transit service (supply) and needs of a particular population (demand). These populations are often referred to as “transit dependent,” people that are too young, too old, or too poor or who are physically unable to drive. “Transit deserts” in this case are defined as areas that lack adequate public transit service given areas containing populations that are deemed transit-dependent. This study aims to analyze and establish a clear method for calculating and quantifying gaps between transit demand and supply using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). …

Bus Rapid Transit And Economic Development: Case Study Of The Eugene-Springfield Brt System, Arthur C. Nelson, Bruce Appleyard, Shyam Kannan, Reid Ewing, Matt Miller, Dejan Eskic Sep 2013

Bus Rapid Transit And Economic Development: Case Study Of The Eugene-Springfield Brt System, Arthur C. Nelson, Bruce Appleyard, Shyam Kannan, Reid Ewing, Matt Miller, Dejan Eskic

Journal of Public Transportation

Bus rapid transit (BRT) in the United States is relatively recent. BRT has many promises, one of which is enhancing the economic development prospects of firms locating along the route. Another is to improve overall metropolitan economic performance. In this article, we evaluate this issue with respect to one of the nation’s newest BRT systems that operates in a metropolitan area without rail transit: Eugene-Spring field, Oregon. While the metropolitan area lost jobs between 2004 and 2010, jobs grew within 0.25 miles of BRT stations. Using shift-share analysis, we find that BRT stations are attractive to jobs in several economic …

The Mayaarch3d Project: A 3d Webgis For Analyzing Ancient Architecture And Landscapes, Jennifer Von Schwerin, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Fabio Remondino, Giorgio Agugario, Gabrio Girardi Sep 2013

The Mayaarch3d Project: A 3d Webgis For Analyzing Ancient Architecture And Landscapes, Jennifer Von Schwerin, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Fabio Remondino, Giorgio Agugario, Gabrio Girardi

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

There is a need in the humanities for a 3D WebGIS with analytical tools that allow researchers to analyze 3D models linked to spatially referenced data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow for complex spatial analysis of 2.5D data. For example, they offer bird’s eye views of landscapes with extruded building footprints, but one cannot ‘get on the ground’ and interact with true 3D models from a pedestrian perspective. Meanwhile, 3D models and virtual environments visualize data in 3D space, but analytical tools are simple rotation or lighting effects. The MayaArch3D Project is developing a 3D WebGIS—called QueryArch3D—to allow these two …

Development Of A Scale For Fantasy State In Digital Games, Beomkyu Choi, Jie Huang, Annie Jeffrey, Youngkyun Baek Sep 2013

Development Of A Scale For Fantasy State In Digital Games, Beomkyu Choi, Jie Huang, Annie Jeffrey, Youngkyun Baek

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Digital games appear to motivate players intrinsically. Of various game features, fantasy in particularly plays a crucial role in enhancing motivation and is a key factor in immersion in gameplay. As with its inherent value, fantasy also plays a vital role in distinguishing digital games itself from other media. Despite its significance, fantasy has received little attention, and this concept is still ambiguous to define with any certainty. This study thus aims to create a framework to explore a dimension of fantasy and to develop a scale to measure a state of fantasy in digital games. As a result, four …

Bicycle-Transit Integration In The United States, 2001–2009, Rui Wang, Chen Liu Sep 2013

Bicycle-Transit Integration In The United States, 2001–2009, Rui Wang, Chen Liu

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper analyzes the recent trend in bicycle-transit integration in the U.S. It reviews data from the National Household Travel Surveys (NHTS) to show the characteristics of bicycle-transit integrated trips, where the integrators were from, and to which population groups the integrators belonged. Bicycle-transit integration was increasingly observed in commuters and younger travelers, and became more imbalanced by gender. Results indicate the rise in socio-economic diversity of bicycle-transit integrators, despite a racial gap. There was a clear concentration of bicycle-transit integrators in large and high-density urban areas, where most transit users lived. Evidence does not support that rail attracts more …

What A Girl Wants: Female Mate Selection In Terms Of Monetary Resources And Number Of Children, Stefanit Tucker Sep 2013

What A Girl Wants: Female Mate Selection In Terms Of Monetary Resources And Number Of Children, Stefanit Tucker

Modern Psychological Studies

Several evolutionary theories provide the framework for assessing modern mate selection. Previous research in female mate selection has left a gap in whether and how number of children a male has can impact the perception of monetary resources he possesses and subsequently his desirability as a mate. The present investigation thus set out to examine resource-related differences among males with average ($50,001-75,000) and above average incomes (>$150,000) by analyzing data available through the online dating website, match.com. Furthermore, the geographic locations of New York, New York and Louisville, Kentucky were used to both refine results but also maintain genera …

Adaptation And The Courtroom: Judging Climate Science, Kirsten Engel, Jonathan Overpeck Sep 2013

Adaptation And The Courtroom: Judging Climate Science, Kirsten Engel, Jonathan Overpeck

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

Climate science is increasingly showing up in courtroom disputes over the duty to adapt to climate change. While judges play a critical role in evaluating scientific evidence, they are not apt to be familiar with the basic methods of climate science nor with the role played by peer review, publication, and training of climate scientists. This Article is an attempt to educate the bench and the bar on the basics of the discipline of climate science, which we contend is a distinct scientific discipline. We propose a series of principles to guide a judge’s evaluation of the reliability and weight …
