Solid State Pre-Formed Electronics Adhesive (Spea), Alexander Randon Cope Sep 2013

Solid State Pre-Formed Electronics Adhesive (Spea), Alexander Randon Cope

Dissertations and Theses

In mobile and handheld consumer electronic markets, product use conditions drive the requirement for mechanical strength and device durability. The majority of relatively large form factor electronic components in a laptop, mobile internet device, PDA, or mobile phone use an adhesive as a stiffener to help protect the component from physical stresses imposed by daily wear and tear. Described herein is an innovative solution referred to as Solid State Pre-Formed Electronics Adhesive (SPEA), which enables a decrease in circuit board manufacturing throughput time while increasing mechanical durability with a consistent and characterized adhesive application process.

Today, many consumer electronic ODM's …

A Study Of The Universities Of The Third Age In Hong Kong : An Evaluation Of Elder Academy Model For The Life Long Learning Of Older People, Ka Fai Wong Sep 2013

A Study Of The Universities Of The Third Age In Hong Kong : An Evaluation Of Elder Academy Model For The Life Long Learning Of Older People, Ka Fai Wong

Lingnan Theses

Education aims at the development of knowledge and skills for its own sake and pleasure. People aged over 65 years currently comprise 11% of the Hong Kong population. Such aging population in Hong Kong constitutes a challenge to our society. To be adaptive to changes in the environment, especially in aging, more emphasis is placed on “lifelong learning” than on “lifelong education” for self-fulfillment Active aging is evidently supported as a solution to the impact of aging population. Lifelong learning is an important strategy for enhancing active aging. The provision and process of lifelong learning for older people can take …

Wikipedia-Type Disambiguation Functionality In Lcsh: A Recommendation, Daniel Canncasciato

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract: A proposal for a modest change in LCSH practice (and RDA when chapter 23 is written) to provide a Wikipedia-type disambiguation function for subject headings in library catalogs. Such a change is cost effective, scalable, familiar, and system-agnostic. Furthermore, it is necessary for fulfillment of our catalog objectives.

Evaluate The Effect Of Imf’S Longer-Term Concessional Lending Programs On Growth In The Development Background Of Sub-Saharan Region, Guanyi Yang Sep 2013

Evaluate The Effect Of Imf’S Longer-Term Concessional Lending Programs On Growth In The Development Background Of Sub-Saharan Region, Guanyi Yang

Undergraduate Economic Review

Despite different voices from critics, the IMF has put development at the center of its policies. This paper tries to separate the effect of SAF, ESAF, PRGF, and ECF on growth empirically. Selecting a sample of 44 countries in the Sub-Saharan region from 1986 to 2011, it analyzes whether the IMF’s longer-term structural adjustment programs influences economic growth in participating countries. Consistent with previous studies, this research shows that SAF and ESAF have statistically insignificant impact on growth in the short term and long term. PRGF and ECF, on the other hand, are found to have a large and strong …

Local Attitudes Towards Bear Management After Illegal Feeding And Problem Bear Activity, Sara Dubois, David Fraser Sep 2013

Local Attitudes Towards Bear Management After Illegal Feeding And Problem Bear Activity, Sara Dubois, David Fraser

Wildlife Population Management Collection

The “pot bears” received international media attention in 2010 after police discovered the intentional feeding of over 20 black bears during the investigation of an alleged marijuana-growing operation in Christina Lake, British Columbia, Canada. A two-phase random digit dialing survey of the community was conducted in 2011 to understand local perspectives on bear policy and management, before and after a summer of problem bear activity and government interventions. Of the 159 households surveyed in February 2011, most had neutral or positive attitudes towards bears in general, and supported the initial decision to feed the food-conditioned bears until the autumn hibernation. …

Listening To Women's Voices : Clinicians' Perspectives On The Benefits Of Feminist Therapy In The Treatment Of Borderline Personality Disorder, Abigail W. Moore

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative, exploratory study examines the perspectives of practicing feminist therapists about the benefits of utilizing feminist therapy for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Twelve licensed clinicians were interviewed about their clinical experiences and perceptions of the benefits of feminist therapy in treating clients diagnosed with BPD. Clinicians discussed the theory and implementation of feminist therapy; how feminist therapists understand BPD in light of current debates on the use of this diagnosis; and the unique benefits feminist therapy may offer in the treatment of BPD. Participants were asked to give their reactions to the BPD diagnosis and the …

Hiv/Aids Serostatus Disclosure And Stigma In Asian And Pacific Islander Women : A Call For Intersectionality In The Treatment Of Depression, Andrea L. Mize Sep 2013

Hiv/Aids Serostatus Disclosure And Stigma In Asian And Pacific Islander Women : A Call For Intersectionality In The Treatment Of Depression, Andrea L. Mize

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In the United States the prevalence and incidence rates of Asian and Pacific Islander (AandPI) women with HIV/AIDS is increasing. As many as 1 in 3 may not know they are HIV positive. Existing literature using stigma theory revealed that AandPI HIV positive women can experience both positive and negative mental health effects from HIV serostatus disclosure. These findings are an important mental health issue as HIV serostatus disclosure has traditionally been encouraged for the benefit of those diagnosed and their kinship networks. The present study seeks to examine the correlation found in previous research between disclosure or nondisclosure of …

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Although the drainage history of intermountain western North America has been studied extensively, traditional geological and paleontological approaches have slowed in deciphering that history because most Miocene and Pliocene evidence is buried by Pleistocene and other recent alluvial sediments. To fill this void, phylogeography has emerged as a novel approach to the study of drainage history. By using genetic analysis to examine the evolutionary relationships among various populations of a given species, especially an aquatic organism, researchers can construct genetic-based distribution patterns that ostensibly reflect historic inter-basin connections. This approach can potentially fill in some of the gaps left by …

Homo Religiosus? Religion And Immigrant Subjectivities, David Ley, Justin Kh Tse Sep 2013

Homo Religiosus? Religion And Immigrant Subjectivities, David Ley, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Once ignored in national and international public policy, religion has made a comeback as policymakers have noticed the significance of the resurgence of religion, especially due to migration flows. While laudatory of these developments, this chapter specifies the need for a theological reading of the migrant religious practitioner as homo religiosus. First, we describe the social geographies of immigrant religion in an international context, drawing attention to the vibrancy of religious devotion, especially Christianity from the global south, among migrant groups. Second, we re-conceptualise religious belief through the theoretical work of John Milbank and Charles Taylor as they recuperate a …

The Localism Movement: Shared And Emergent Values, Nancy B. Kurland, Sara Jane Mccaffrey, Douglas H. Hill Sep 2013

The Localism Movement: Shared And Emergent Values, Nancy B. Kurland, Sara Jane Mccaffrey, Douglas H. Hill

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

Localism, a movement to encourage consumers and businesses to purchase from locally owned, independent businesses rather than national corporations, has grown rapidly in the past decade. With several national, federated organizations and popular “buy local” campaigns, the localism movement has the potential to affect buying patterns, marketing, and distribution in American business. Yet localism remains understudied by researchers. This article, based on data from 38 interviews with localism leaders, identifies four of the movement’s priorities: independent ownership, local buying, local sourcing, and pragmatic partnering. In addition, we analyze the movement’s emerging values, including responsibility to workers and to the natural …

Evolving Role Of Ehs Manager In Industrial Sustainability Programs — Case Studies Incorporating A Pollution Prevention Approach To Problem Solving, Anahita Williamson, David Fister, Rajiv Ramchandra Sep 2013

Evolving Role Of Ehs Manager In Industrial Sustainability Programs — Case Studies Incorporating A Pollution Prevention Approach To Problem Solving, Anahita Williamson, David Fister, Rajiv Ramchandra

Journal of Environmental Sustainability

The role of the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager has evolved over the last two decades. For many companies, the focus of the EHS Manager is shifting from solely a regulatory compliance and waste treatment or waste disposal role to incorporating a green engineering and pollution prevention approach when solving environmental problems. It is critical for the EHS Manager to have a strong understanding of Environmental Management Systems (EMS), regulatory requirements, and ISO standards pertaining to environment, health, and safety. However, having the ability to go beyond this realm and collaborate with manufacturing personnel to determine opportunities for cost …

On Learning And Unlearning, Katherine M. Patterson Sep 2013

On Learning And Unlearning, Katherine M. Patterson

SURGE

I remember passing our lunch lady–the nice one with a big bleach-blond afro. She was perched on an elementary-school-sized desk, eyes fixated to the television. I glanced at the screen on the way into my classroom while my teacher hesitated in the hallway, whispering to the other adults. She reentered the room a few minutes later to explain.

In the following months, my television provided me with one of the most formative, practical and comprehensive educational experiences of my life. First it was vocabulary building, with the words like “hi-jacker,” and “terrorist.” Then it was physics, learning that inertia is …

Speciation By Reproductive Isolation, Ian Dawson, Dr. Jerry Johnson Sep 2013

Speciation By Reproductive Isolation, Ian Dawson, Dr. Jerry Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Ecological Speciation Hypothesis is a controversial explanation for how new species form. Although the idea is gaining momentum, there have been very few empirical tests of this model. Hence, our research is very timely and addresses what could be a common process by which new species form. Our research will address the effect of differences in predation pressure on the evolution of mating behavior. It will be one of only three studies to examine if predation can lead to reproductive isolation.

Successful Leadership In Social Work : Leadership Characteristics To Accomplish A Paradigm Shift In Services, Jacqueline M. Kinsley Sep 2013

Successful Leadership In Social Work : Leadership Characteristics To Accomplish A Paradigm Shift In Services, Jacqueline M. Kinsley

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The implementation of the Children's Behavior Health Initiative (CBHI) as the U.S. Court ordered resolution of the landmark decision of the class action commonly known as Rosie D. v. Romney is an opportunity to examine a radical change to the delivery of mental health care for children and the construction of a whole new delivery system on a state-wide basis (Center for Public Representation, 2012). What were the leadership characteristics of and the key decisions made by those who successfully created Community Service Agencies (CSAs) to accomplish the delivery of such a paradigm shift in services? Executives, program directors/managers, and …

By Choice Or By Chance? Why Is Nevada Last In Federal Funding And What Can Be Done About It?, Tracy M. Gordon Sep 2013

By Choice Or By Chance? Why Is Nevada Last In Federal Funding And What Can Be Done About It?, Tracy M. Gordon

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

The federal government spends more than $600 billion or 17 percent of its budget each year on grants to states and localities. Nevada consistently ranks at the bottom among states in its allocation of federal dollars per capita. This presentation will examine the reasons for Nevada’s “donor state” status including state demographics, federal funding formulas, and state policy decisions. It will focus especially on Medicaid, the largest federal grant program, and Governor Brian Sandoval’s recent decision to participate in the program expansion scheduled for 2014 under the Affordable Care Act. The presentation will also discuss reasons for intergovernmental grants and …

Four Decades Of Andean Timberline Migration And Implications For Biodiversity Loss With Climate Change, David A. Lutz, Rebecca L. Powell, Miles R. Silman Sep 2013

Four Decades Of Andean Timberline Migration And Implications For Biodiversity Loss With Climate Change, David A. Lutz, Rebecca L. Powell, Miles R. Silman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Rapid 21st-century climate change may lead to large population decreases and extinction in tropical montane cloud forest species in the Andes. While prior research has focused on species migrations per se, ecotones may respond to different environmental factors than species. Even if species can migrate in response to climate change, if ecotones do not they can function as hard barriers to species migrations, making ecotone migrations central to understanding species persistence under scenarios of climate change. We examined a 42-year span of aerial photographs and high resolution satellite imagery to calculate migration rates of timberline–the grassland-forest ecotone–inside and outside of …

Transmedia Play: Literacy Across Media, Meryl Alper, Rebecca Herr-Stephenson Sep 2013

Transmedia Play: Literacy Across Media, Meryl Alper, Rebecca Herr-Stephenson

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Transmedia play is a new way to understand how children develop critical media literacy and new media literacies through their interactions with contemporary media that links stories and structures across platforms. This essay highlights five characteristics of transmedia play that make it particularly useful for learning: resourcefulness, sociality, mobility, accessibility, and replayability, and explains how each characteristic relates to digital and media literacy education.
