Hacking The Narrative: How A Philadelphia Hackerspace Uses Storytelling To Explore The Gender Gap In Technology, Stephanie Alarcon, Georgia Guthrie Mar 2013

Hacking The Narrative: How A Philadelphia Hackerspace Uses Storytelling To Explore The Gender Gap In Technology, Stephanie Alarcon, Georgia Guthrie

Women's History in the Digital World

The Hacktory, a technology education and creative space in Philadelphia, has developed an interactive workshop, “Hacking the Gender Gap.” Attendees are asked to write stories of their positive and negative experiences with technology and post them on a physical timeline. The resulting clusters of experiences at key ages provide visual data, highlight patterns, and provide insight into how people engage with technology now and in recent history. We have run this activity with women-only and mixed gendered crowds, each time with interesting results. The stories and patterns help communicate the pervasive nature of this problem, and give form to the …

The Visual And The Law Of Cities, Stephen R. Miller Mar 2013

The Visual And The Law Of Cities, Stephen R. Miller

Pace Law Review

This article will attempt to explore, through four separate “tableaux,” or brief sketches, four ways in which the visual interplays with the law of cities, and how a deeper understanding of this intersection can assist in the development of these laws and their underlying policies. This discussion will by no means be definitive. However, by presenting these four approaches in which the visual complicates and assists the law of cities, and sometimes even acts as the law of cities, it is hoped the article will spur a dialogue on the law’s relationship to the visual.

Use Of Self-Assembled Monolayers To Tailor Surface Properties: From Lubrication To Neuronal Development, Natalie Ann Lafranzo Mar 2013

Use Of Self-Assembled Monolayers To Tailor Surface Properties: From Lubrication To Neuronal Development, Natalie Ann Lafranzo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The subsequent work describes advances in modifying the chemical properties of various substrates to tailor the surface properties for specific applications. This is achieved by making use of a molecular assembly known as self-assembled monolayers, or SAMs. SAMs are composed of tightly packed organic molecules that form a well-ordered structure on a substrate. Typically, the head group of the monomer is covalently anchored to the substrate, and monolayer order and self-assembly is achieved through van der Waals interactions between the long alkyl chains of the monomer's tail group. Monolayers containing head groups consisting of thiols, siloxanes, and phosphonates have been …

Science, Technology, And Catholic Identity In The Education Of Professionals, Keith Douglass Warner, David S. Caudill Mar 2013

Science, Technology, And Catholic Identity In The Education Of Professionals, Keith Douglass Warner, David S. Caudill

Journal of Catholic Education

The reception of Ex corde ecclesiae has been uneven across the disciplines, with scant interest in distinctly Catholic pedagogies outside of the humanities. This essay argues that Catholic universities can distinguish themselves by how they present science and technology in their curriculum by drawing from the interdisciplinary field of “science, technology & society,” or STS. We argue that discussions about Catholic identity, science, and human values can and should extend into the curriculum while simultaneously safeguarding academic freedom, and that this can readily be done in professional schools, such as law and engineering. We outline the contributions that STS as …

Assessing Retention In Two Freshman Natural Resource Orientation Courses, Mark E. Burbach, Shannon Moncure Mar 2013

Assessing Retention In Two Freshman Natural Resource Orientation Courses, Mark E. Burbach, Shannon Moncure

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Many university programs have implemented freshman orientation courses to improve student retention. This two‐year study explored the relationship between student evaluations of instruction in relation to student learning objectives of two recently developed freshman natural resource orientation courses and predictors of college student retention identified by Davidson, Beck, and Milligan (2009) and Cuseo (2007). The five instructional objectives were Developing a Sense of Community, Reviewing Issues Related to Natural Resources, Evaluating Courses and College Activities, Exploring Careers in Natural Resources, and Developing Resources in the Department. Ninety‐five freshman students participated in this study. All five evaluations of instruction in relation …
