Gulf Stream Sea Surface Temperature Shift, Peter Willauer Apr 2013

Gulf Stream Sea Surface Temperature Shift, Peter Willauer

Atlas of Maine

Sea surface temperatures (SST) of the Gulf Stream change enormously on year to year basis. In this study, however, I investigated the trends and temperature shifts over a 20-year period determining if a clear shift is evident in this particular current. I found no significant trends, but I did find several interesting results. I used ArcGIS to gather and analyze data from NOAA's satellite (AVHRR) and developed an Ordinarily Least Squares regression model comparing a monthly average over 20 years to determine if the temperature shifts over time were not random. I was able to isolate slopes with significant P-values …

Conservation Easement Distribution Across New England, Ginny Keesler Apr 2013

Conservation Easement Distribution Across New England, Ginny Keesler

Atlas of Maine

My project considers conservation easement distribution across New England. I answer the questions: Are conservation easements clumped in each of the New England states? How do conservation easements generally differ between states in terms of size and number? Where are conservation easements located in relation to areas of various population densities? I examine clumping of conservation easements by state using a Monte Carlo simulation. Results suggest that easements are significantly clumped in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. There is no data for Connecticut. As far as size of easements is concerned, the average easement tract size is …

Emissions Estimate For Faculty, Staff, And Student Commutes In 2013, Ryan Newell Apr 2013

Emissions Estimate For Faculty, Staff, And Student Commutes In 2013, Ryan Newell

Atlas of Maine

In 2013 Colby College declared it was carbon neutral. The college achieved “net zero” CO2 equivalent emissions by switching to wind power for electricity and replacing 90% of its oil consumption with biomass. The remaining emissions were offset based on assumptions about travel, waste, consumption, etc. The goal of this project was to update the estimate of the total greenhouse gas emissions produced as a result of faculty, staff, and students commuting to Colby in 2013. This is not a comprehensive analysis of all college related travel, but a specific subset. This is important because it can improve Colby’s estimate …

How Smart Is Lakesmart?: An Analysis, Eliza Phillips, Liz Schell Apr 2013

How Smart Is Lakesmart?: An Analysis, Eliza Phillips, Liz Schell

Atlas of Maine

Lakefront properties are greatly valued by home customers today. Unfortunately, many homeowners value clear views of the lake, and as a consequence, remove all natural barriers (i.e. trees, shrubs, etc.) from the lakeshore, which leads to a decrease in water quality (Schindler 1974).

In the Belgrade Lakes watershed in Maine, people have recognized that human intervention has led to a reduction in water quality in their lakes. Because of this, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), introduced a program called LakeSmart in 2003 to incentivize homeowners to keep lake water clean in the Belgrade Lakes by stabilizing eroded areas, …

Marine Turtle Health Assessment And Aquarium Suitability: Uzi Island, Zanzibar, Olivia “Warda” Crane

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study assessed the health of the marine turtles in the aquarium on Uzi Island. Health evaluations of each turtle included size, eating habit, and physical abnormalities. Behaviorally the sea turtles were observed at two different time periods multiple times. Results were compared to research on wild sea turtles. The conditions of the aquarium were evaluated for water quality and holding capacity. The water temperature, pH, and salinity levels were tested to assess the water quality. The results showed that the overall health of the sea turtles were positive from the normal activities and few abnormalities. The overall aquarium conditions …

Establishment Of The Coral Sea Marine Reserve: An In-Depth Analysis Of The Social And Environmental Impacts Of An Ecosystem-Based Management Approach To Conservation, Grace O’Connor Apr 2013

Establishment Of The Coral Sea Marine Reserve: An In-Depth Analysis Of The Social And Environmental Impacts Of An Ecosystem-Based Management Approach To Conservation, Grace O’Connor

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The proposed Coral Sea Marine Reserve covers approximately 989,842 square kilometers and is in an area that is internationally recognized for rich biodiversity, unique species and important heritage values. The reserve was established to protect and maintain biodiversity and to contribute to international (UNCED) and national obligations (EPBC, NRSMPA). This spatial protection is an ecosystem-based management approach calling for ecologically sustainable use of marine resources, as well as protection of many vulnerable and endangered species. The zoning of the Coral Sea Marine Reserve will drastically limit human use, most notably prohibiting fishing in the majority of the area. Extensive research …

Estimation Of Firm-Level Productivity Changes In The Indian Power Sector: Disentangling Unobserved Heterogeneity By A Transformed Fixed-Effect Stochastic Frontier Model, Anish Sugathan, Deepak Malghan, S Chandrashekar, Deepak Kumar Sinha Apr 2013

Estimation Of Firm-Level Productivity Changes In The Indian Power Sector: Disentangling Unobserved Heterogeneity By A Transformed Fixed-Effect Stochastic Frontier Model, Anish Sugathan, Deepak Malghan, S Chandrashekar, Deepak Kumar Sinha

Working Papers

We measure firm-level productivity changes in the Indian electricity sector during a period that witnessed several pro-market regulatory changes. Using information collected from multiple sources we construct a unique panel of generating firms and transmission and distribution utilities spanning the years 2000 to 2009. We employ a recently developed improvement in the Stochastic Frontier panel method that allows controlling for time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity. Using the method we jointly estimate inefficiency and exogenous determinants of inefficiency. We estimate a flexible translog production model and compute decomposition of productivity into components of changes in technology, efficiency, scale and price effect. During this …

Explaining The Hydroclimatic Variability And Change In The Salmon River Basin, Venkataramana Sridhar, Xin Jin, W. Thilini Jaksa

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Climate change in the Pacific Northwest and in particular, the Salmon River Basin (SRB), is expected to bring about 3–5 °C rise in temperatures and an 8 % increase in precipitation. In order to assess the impacts due to these changes at the basin scale, this study employed an improved version of Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) model, which includes a parallel version of VIC combined with a comprehensive parameter estimation technique, Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE) to estimate the streamflow and other water balance components. Our calibration (1955–1975) and validation (1976–1999) of the model at the outlet of the basin, White …

The Influences Of Climatic And Socioeconomic Variables On Cholera Incidence In India During The Seventh Pandemic, 1961-2008, Kathleen M. Henschel Apr 2013

The Influences Of Climatic And Socioeconomic Variables On Cholera Incidence In India During The Seventh Pandemic, 1961-2008, Kathleen M. Henschel

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Cholera outbreaks result in significant morbidity worldwide. Transmission of the disease may be influenced by weather fluctuations, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and excessive rainfall, and socioeconomic status (SES), including income and education. El Niño events may influence many aspects of the climate, including the amount of rainfall occurring in a given year and surface water temperature. This study aimed to assess the influences of extreme weather and SES factors on cholera incidence in India during the seventh cholera pandemic (1961-2008).

Methods: Data for all variables were obtained for 1961-2008. Indian population estimates and cholera incidence (IR) were …

Landscapes To Learnscapes: Exploring Schoolyard-Based Education, Emily I. Palena, Caroline T. Spurgin Apr 2013

Landscapes To Learnscapes: Exploring Schoolyard-Based Education, Emily I. Palena, Caroline T. Spurgin

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis explores schoolyard-based education as a viable and necessary method for rectifying the shortcomings within the American public school system and the Nature-deficit Disorder epidemic. We argue that schoolyard-based education should be fully integrated into the school system, not in the sole form of popularized school gardens, but as a standard teaching method. We show this using extensive research and a case study of three elementary schools in Claremont, California.

Currents Of Change: An Urban And Environmental History Of The Anacostia River And Near Southeast Waterfront In Washington, D.C., Emily C. Haynes Apr 2013

Currents Of Change: An Urban And Environmental History Of The Anacostia River And Near Southeast Waterfront In Washington, D.C., Emily C. Haynes

Pitzer Senior Theses

This thesis analyzes how social and environmental inequalities have interacted throughout Washington, D.C.’s urban and environmental history to shape the Anacostia River and its Near Southeast waterfront into urbanized and industrialized landscapes. Drawing on the principles of environmental justice, urban political ecology, and environmental history, I examine the construction of urban rivers and waterfront space over time. I link the ecological and social decline of the Anacostia River and Near Southeast neighborhood to a broader national pattern of environmental degradation and social inequality along urban rivers that resulted from urban industrialization and federal water management. Finally, I discuss the recent …
