Evaluation Of Rope Shovel Operators In Surface Coal Mining Using A Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Model, Ivana M. Vukotic May 2013

Evaluation Of Rope Shovel Operators In Surface Coal Mining Using A Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Model, Ivana M. Vukotic

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rope shovels are used to dig and load material in surface mines. One of the main factors that influence the productivity and energy consumption of rope shovels is the performance of the operator. Existing methods of evaluating operator performance do not consider the relationship between production rate and energy consumption. This thesis presents a method for evaluating rope shovel operators using the Multi-Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) model. Data used in this research were collected from an operating surface coal mine in the southern United States. The MADM model used in this research consists of attributes, their weights of importance, and alternatives. …

Functional Morphology And Performance Of Ecological Systems With Extreme Pressures: Waterfall Climbing And Predator-Prey Interaction In Amphidromous Gobioid Fishes, Takashi Maie May 2013

Functional Morphology And Performance Of Ecological Systems With Extreme Pressures: Waterfall Climbing And Predator-Prey Interaction In Amphidromous Gobioid Fishes, Takashi Maie

All Dissertations

Understanding the functional capacity and performance of organisms provides a strong foundation for recognizing the forces that are responsible for their form, and how they might adapt to variable or changing environmental conditions. Amphidromous stream goby fishes live in a habitat subject to two potentially extreme selective pressures: (1) predation on juvenile fish returning to freshwater from the ocean, and (2) the demand to climb waterfalls to reach adult breeding habitats. Recognizing these selection pressures, I present studies evaluating (1) the mechanisms underlying the functional capacity for adhesive performance, and (2) the risk that predation imposes on amphidromous gobies. Specifically, …

Adaptation Of Regional Representative Soil Project And Soil Judging For Cameroon, Celestine Che May 2013

Adaptation Of Regional Representative Soil Project And Soil Judging For Cameroon, Celestine Che

All Dissertations

Representative regional soils have agricultural, cultural, economic, environmental, and historical importance to Cameroon. Twenty seven regional representative soils have been identified in Cameroon. A set of laboratory exercises, assignments and exam questions have been developed utilizing the Regional Representative Soil Project (RRSP) that gives students an opportunity to practice interpretation of soil series descriptions, taxonomic classes, soil forming factors, and soil physical and chemical properties. The RRSP can be further enhanced and complemented with Soil Judging. Conventional soil judging as practiced in the United States has been adapted for Cameroon by a graduate student from that country using an undergraduate-level …

Standing's Expected Value, Jonathan Remy Nash May 2013

Standing's Expected Value, Jonathan Remy Nash

Michigan Law Review

This Article argues in favor of standing based on expected value of harm. Standing doctrine has been constructed in a way that is oblivious to the idea of expected value. If people have suffered a loss with a positive expected value, they have suffered an "injury in fact." The incorporation of expected value into standing doctrine casts doubt on many of the Supreme Court's decisions in which it denies standing because the relevant injury is too "speculative" or is not "likely" to be redressed by a decree in the plaintiff's favor. This Article addresses this shortcoming in standing jurisprudence by …

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This project serves as a feasibility experiment to bring the Pink Oyster mushroom(Pleurotus flabellatus) into constant domestic cultivation for the purposes of commercialization. Important data acquired from growth trials were growth timelines and yields. This information was used to generate interactive spreadsheets with which one can determine possible cost and profit in a variety of scenarios. The first portion of the experiment involved constructing a growth chamber, which can achieve and maintain stable environmental conditions. This portion was successful. Secondly, the numbers obtained from the experimental growth trials were used to determine future projections from the perspective of …

Exploring Prairie Diversity: Plant Parasitic Nematodes Of 9 Mile Prairie, Maggie Olson May 2013

Exploring Prairie Diversity: Plant Parasitic Nematodes Of 9 Mile Prairie, Maggie Olson

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Nematodes are some of the most diverse and abundant animals on Earth. These microscopic invertebrates are found in virtually all terrestrial and aquatic habitats. While their abundance and diversity of form is well documented, their genetic diversity and distribution is largely unknown (Boag and Yeates, 1998). How this diversity is distributed across continents, ecoregions, and landscapes is still being discovered.

There are two primary objectives of this project. First, we wanted to determine how patterns of nematode diversity are distributed within and among tall grass prairies. Additionally, we wanted to generate new knowledge about belowground prairie diversity. One component to …

Causes And Effects Of Streambank Erosion And Mass-Wasting Along Stevens Creek In Northeast Lancaster County, Nebraska: A Photographic Qualitative Case Study, Jared A. Norris

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The Stevens Creek watershed borders the eastern side of the city of Lincoln, Nebraska. The study site for this investigation is located near the intersection of the Murdock recreation trail bridge and the Stevens Creek waterway. This research examined the causes and effects of streambank erosion within approximately 75 meters upstream and downstream of the Murdock Trail bridge-Stevens Creek intersection. The investigation utilized extensive photographic evidence, field observations, and some water and soil sampling to qualitatively determine that the extent of streambank erosion within the given study site is occurring at an accelerated rate, likely as a result of increased …

Characterization Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter In Mountaintop Mining And Non-Mining Areas In West Virginia With Known Health Differences, Laura M. Kurth May 2013

Characterization Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter In Mountaintop Mining And Non-Mining Areas In West Virginia With Known Health Differences, Laura M. Kurth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction: Mortality and morbidity rates in the Appalachian region are higher than in the national population. People who live in Appalachian areas where coal mining is prominent have increased health problems compared to people in non-mining areas of Appalachia. Health disparities remain higher in mining areas even after adjusting for lifestyle and demographic effects illustrating that additional factors, such as environmental influences, are associated with adverse health outcomes. Coal mines and coal mining activities result in the production of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), which is associated with environmental and human health effects. Environmental studies of air and water quality in …

Fe(Vi) As A New Chemical Agent For Treatment Of Landfill Leachate, Christopher Gravesen May 2013

Fe(Vi) As A New Chemical Agent For Treatment Of Landfill Leachate, Christopher Gravesen

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

More than 50% municipal solid waste (MSW) is being disposed of within landfills in the United States. Despite many benefits, landfills inevitably produce highly contaminated wastewater - landfill leachate. Landfill leachate represents one of the most challengeable wastewaters in the world. Refractory organic matters and ammonia nitrogen are two major persistent traditional contaminants in landfill leachate. The contaminants ought to be properly removed prior to discharge into natural water resources.

Ferrate (FeO42-) is a potential water treatment chemical agent in which iron is in its + 6 oxidation state. In engineering practice, Fe(VI) can concurrently function as …

Investigating Planetary Magnetic Fields : 1. Paleosecular Variation And Relative Paleointensity Curves From Maxwell Bay, Antarctica 2. Rock Magnetic And Remanence Properties Of Natural And Synthetic Martian Basalts, Deepa Shah

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis study investigates two individual projects to determine the paleomagnetic records from sediment core NBP0502-1B from Maxwell Bay Antarctica and SNC Martian meteorite Yamato-908459. Core NBP0502-1B from Maxwell Bay, South Shetland Islands, recovered a 108 m sedimentary record dating between 14.1-14.8 ka. The core has a silty-clay lithology and a calcite based radiocarbon chronology, making this an ideal site to reconstruct an independently dated record of paleosecular variation (PSV) and relative paleointensity (RPI). The interval 0-72 mbsf displays a normal sedimentary fabric, with Kmjn inclination values nearly vertical and Kint and Kmax distributed within the bedding …

Reforestation Of Red Spruce (Picea Rubens) On The Cheat Mountain Range, West Virginia, Justin Madron

Theses and Dissertations

The (Plethodon nettingi) Cheat Mountain Salamander is a rare and endangered species that relies heavily on (Picea rubens) Red Spruce for habitat. P. rubens communities on the Cheat Mountain range in West Virginia have been disturbed by fires and logging, and regeneration of P. rubens stands are central to the survival of the P. netting. A supervised and unsupervised landscape classification of three Landsat images over the past 26 years was conducted to analyze change in P. rubens communities on Cheat Mountain Range. Change detection results revealed that from 1986-2012 a 52% growth increase of P. rubens stands, 18% loss, …

Damage On A Main Gas Pipeline Due To Landslide Of Soils Derived From Volcanic Ashes In Colombia, Gilberto Ch. Rodriguez, Julián V. Rodriguez, Natalia A. Quintero, Jorge E. Villamarín

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In December 2011 a great proportion slope failed affecting the main gas pipeline (20” diameter) that supplies Colombia’s southwest area. The landslide involved materials formed by soils derived from volcanic ashes and residual soils, typical in Colombia’s central zone, which acquired great energy flowing in an avalanche through the natural watercourse. The avalanche generated soil erosion over the torrent banks, generating the watercourse deepening and the deterioration of adjacent slopes over which the pipeline runs. There were identified as landslides triggering aspects the atypical raining period due to “La Niña” climatic phenomenon and the soils removal at the slope base …

An Efficient Contracting Approach To Rural Electric Cooperatives And The Development Of Upper Midwest (U.S.) Wind Resources, Bart D. Finzel, Arne Kildegaard Apr 2013

An Efficient Contracting Approach To Rural Electric Cooperatives And The Development Of Upper Midwest (U.S.) Wind Resources, Bart D. Finzel, Arne Kildegaard

Economics & Management Publications

Many factors support the likelihood of major wind power deployment in the Upper Midwest of the U.S. over the next two decades. This paper specifically considers the dilemma faced by the existing rural electric co-ops (RECs), to whom wind development poses simultaneously a threat and an opportunity. We argue that the threat can be ameliorated through more appropriate tariff strategies, and that there is an efficient-contracting rationale for RECs to take the lead in future development of the wind resource.
