Applying Some Lessons From The Gulf Oil Spill To Hydraulic Fracturing, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson Jul 2013

Applying Some Lessons From The Gulf Oil Spill To Hydraulic Fracturing, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

In this article, Robertson notes that Ohio is moving quickly towards hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells and some argue it has insufficiently considered and managed that rush in light of the potentially disastrous, albeit unlikely, consequences of groundwater contamination, explosion at wells or drilling sites, depletion of freshwater supply as high volumes are used in fracturing, and disposal of contaminated flowback water. Similarly, although drilling for oil from deep water rigs was neither a new idea nor a new technology when the Macondo well blew out on April 20, 2010—killing 11 people, spewing tons of oil in the Gulf of …

Brief 8: International Fisheries Governance That Works: The Case For A Global Fisheries Organization, J. Samuel Barkin, Elizabeth R. Desombre

Governance and Sustainability Issue Brief Series

International fisheries are being overexploited, and the current institutional structure in place to manage them is not working effectively. Presently, two sets of intergovernmental institutions oversee global fishing. The first comprises roughly three dozen regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), approximately 19 of which are charged with regulating fishing in the areas they oversee. The second set consists of global organizations that touch on but do not directly regulate fisheries issues, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This management patchwork is inadequate to …

Do Open Access Electronic Theses And Dissertations Diminish Publishing Opportunities In The Social Sciences And Humanities? Findings From A 2011 Survey Of Academic Publishers, Marisa Ramirez, Joan T. Dalton, Gail Mcmillan, Max Read, Nancy H. Seamans Jul 2013

Seamans

Library Scholarship

An increasing number of higher education institutions worldwide are requiring submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by graduate students and are subsequently providing open access to these works in online repositories. Faculty advisors and graduate students are concerned that such unfettered access to their work could diminish future publishing opportunities. This study investigated social sciences, arts, and humanities journal editors’ and university press directors’ attitudes toward ETDs. The findings indicate that manuscripts that are revisions of openly accessible ETDs are always welcome for submission or considered on a case-by-case basis by 82.8 percent of journal editors and 53.7 percent …

The Wicked Problem Of Chemicals Policy: Opportunities For Innovation, Jennifer H. Allen Jul 2013

The Wicked Problem Of Chemicals Policy: Opportunities For Innovation, Jennifer H. Allen

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Many environmental challenges facing society today, such as climate change and integrated water management, have been described as “wicked problems” due to their biological, physical, and social complexity. Wicked problems extend across media such as air, land, and water; across political jurisdictions and landscape boundaries; and across traditional policy arenas. Traditional policy approaches that are media-specific, rely on single agencies for implementation, and that do not effectively engage stakeholders and partners outside of government are generally ineffective in addressing these issues. The management of toxic chemicals is a classic “wicked problem.” Existing toxics policies often exacerbate the “wicked” nature of …

Public Perceptions On Lgbt Issues In Modern Vietnam, Yen Hoang Ha Jul 2013

Public Perceptions On Lgbt Issues In Modern Vietnam, Yen Hoang Ha

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This paper examines the history, culture, and policies in Vietnam as fundamentals for an analysis on one of the most emerging topics in the modern Vietnamese society: the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. I have collected data from opinions and comments on different means of social media as representation of public opinion toward LGBT, which seem to most expressed in three aspects: lack of knowledge, stereotype, and prejudice; the categorization and labeling as Third World; and advocacy for LGBT equality. With the quite strict tradition and high stress on family ties, the challenge for the members of this …

Assessing The Release Of Bioactive Trace Elements From Coal Fly Ash Into Natural Fresh Waters, Candace E. Wall Jul 2013

Assessing The Release Of Bioactive Trace Elements From Coal Fly Ash Into Natural Fresh Waters, Candace E. Wall

OES Theses and Dissertations

Each year a significant amount of coal fly ash enters the environment, where it can potentially cause adverse effects by releasing a range of bioactive trace elements. In this context, environmental studies have largely focused on the leaching of trace elements from the coal ash in landfills by rainwater and groundwater, while there has been relatively little study of the release of bioactive trace elements from coal fly ash deposited in natural fresh waters such as rivers and lakes. Furthermore, the batch leaching methods that have been used to study the interaction of rainwater and groundwater with coal ash in …
