This article introduces a special section on empowered partnerships that deepens a dialogue initiated during the 2010 symposium titled EmPowered Partnerships: Community-Based Participatory Action Research for Environmental Justice. The articles in this section will be divided between issues 1 and 2 of the Journal. After briefly reviewing the definitions and the steps associated with community-based participatory action research (CBPAR), we identify the synergies connecting the underlying principles and values of the environmental justice (EJ) movement and CBPAR. The “global carbon age” marks a structural change far beyond the economic realms of implementing carbon trade, affecting the fabric of global environmental governance and its actors. Carbon trade and conservation in the Global South have taken on various forms, and climate change mitigation efforts in light of continued rainforest deforestation are scrambling to establish effective approaches. Ecuador’s Yasuní-ITT Initiative proposes a new global carbon-and-conservation model in the Ecuadorian Amazon that leaves oil reserves of the Yasuní Ishpingo Tambococha Tiputini (ITT) oil fields underground, in exchange for international compensation payments that would be based on voluntary contributions of governments and …

The integration of research into the design process is an opportunity to build ecologically informed urban design solutions. To date, designers have traditionally relied on environmental consultants to provide the best available science; however, serious gaps in our understanding of urban ecosystems remain. To evaluate ecosystem processes and services for sustainable urban design and to further advance our understanding of social-ecological processes within the urban context, we need to integrate primary research into the urban design process. Collaborative Understanding Of Cyanobacteria In Lake Ecosystems, Meredith L. Greer, Holly A. Ewing, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Kathleen C. Weathers

We describe a collaboration between mathematicians and ecologists studying the cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata and its possible role in eutrophication of New England lakes. The mathematics includes compartmental modeling, differential equations, difference equations, and testing models against high-frequency data. The ecology includes observation, field sampling, and parameter estimation based on observed data and the related literature. Mathematically and ecologically, a collaboration like this progresses in ways it never would have if either group worked alone.

The spread and establishment of alien species into new regions is becoming commonplace with increased global trade and a warming climate. Ants are among the most successful of these species due to their relatively small size and adaptability. The southeastern United States has been particularly susceptible to the introduction of alien ant species as a result of its geographic location and large number of shipping ports. A subset of these alien species is considered invasive based on their overall negative impacts to natural ecosystems and to humans.
