Crossing Borders: Two Academic Librarians And A Young Adult Librarian Collaborate To Teach Teens About Sustainability, George J. Aulisio, Sheli Mchugh
Crossing Borders: Two Academic Librarians And A Young Adult Librarian Collaborate To Teach Teens About Sustainability, George J. Aulisio, Sheli Mchugh
Collaborative Librarianship
Two academic librarians from The University of Scranton’s Weinberg Memorial Library partnered with a young adult librarian from the Scranton Public Library to help plan, organize, and implement, a sustainability themed summer series of events for a teen group. This paper discusses experiences of collaborating across traditional library boundaries from perspectives of a technical services librarian, an academic reference librarian, and a young adult librarian united to work together and educate teens about going green. Various resources and literature helped build a successful summer series on sustainability and demonstrated the important role librarians can play in promoting related environmental issues. …

Assessment Of Library Instruction On Undergraduate Student Success In A Documents-Based Research Course: The Benefits Of Librarian, Archivist, And Faculty Collaboration, Paul Victor Jr., Justin Otto, Charles Mutschler
Collaborative Librarianship
This article discusses a successful collaboration between multiple subject specialist librarians, the University Archivist and a faculty member teaching an undergraduate course in documents-based social science research. This collaborative partnership allowed for each subject specialist to expose students to specific information literacy skills they needed to be successful in their class. The authors used pre- and postassessments to gauge student comfort level in conducting library research, as well as a rubric to assess the annotated bibliography of a student’s final research paper. The data from these assessment tools are analyzed and the results discussed. The data indicates that students benefited …

Seasonal Variation Of Litter Accumulation And Putrefaction With Reference To Decomposers In A Mangrove Forest In Karachi, Pakistan, Kanwal Nazim, Moinuddin Ahmed, Syed Shahid Shaukat, Muhammad Uzair Khan
Turkish Journal of Botany
Litter production and its decomposition is a major source of nutrients for mangrove ecosystems. This study was conducted on a naturally growing mangrove population in the Sandspit area in Karachi, Pakistan, during 2007 and 2008. Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. forms an almost pure population in Sandspit mangrove swamps. To examine the details of temporal fluctuation in litter accumulation and its decomposition, observations were taken at monthly intervals. Results showed that the maximum litter accumulation occurred during the monsoon and post-monsoon season with the maximum accumulation in August (68.76 ± 8.72 g/m^2), while minimum litter accretion occurred in January (13.61 ± …

Ecophysiology Of The Holoparasitic Angiosperm Cistanche Phelypaea (Orobancaceae) In A Coastal Salt Marsh, Gamal Mohammad Fahmy
Turkish Journal of Botany
Cistanche phelypaea (L.) Cout. (Orobancaceae) was found parasitising the roots of the succulent shrublets Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (Moric.) K.Koch (Chenopodiaceae) in a coastal salt marsh in Qatar. Measurements were conducted to identify soil properties, host, and noninfected plants by soil excavations to expose the haustoria of the parasite attached to the host roots. The water potential, osmotic potential, pressure potential, and chemical analyses were determined in parasite, host, and noninfected plants. Crown diameter and dry mass of the host plants were smaller than in the noninfected plants. A gradient of water potential existed between the host root and the underground tuberous …

United States National Park Service: Publications
Executive Summary
Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO) plays a vital role in protecting and managing some of the last remnants of native mixed-grass prairie in the region. The Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network (NGPN) and Fire Ecology Program (FireEP) surveyed 12 long-term monitoring plots in Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in 2012 as part of an effort to better understand the condition of plant communities in the park. We measured plant diversity and cover, looked for the presence of exotic species that may be newly invading the park, and evaluated the amount of human and natural disturbance …

Can Law Foster Social-Ecological Resilience?, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Melinda H. Benson
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Law plays an essential role in shaping natural resource and environmental policy, but unfortunately, many environmental laws were developed around the prevailing scientific understanding that there was a “balance of nature” that could be managed and sustained. This view assumes that natural resource managers have the capacity to predict the behavior of ecological systems, know what its important functional components are, and successfully predict the outcome of management interventions. This paper takes on this problem by summarizing and synthesizing the contributions to this Special Feature (Law and Social-Ecological Resilience, Part I: Contributions from Resilience 2011), focusing on the interaction of …

Center for Governance and Sustainability Publications
We joined the University of Massachusetts Boston in the fall of 2010 to develop a new doctoral program in global governance and human security, the first of its kind in the United States. In the spring of 2011, we launched the Center for Governance and Sustainability in an effort to bring academic rigor to real-world policy challenges in environment, development, and sustainability governance.
The Center is housed at the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, which takes pride in offering a world-class interdisciplinary education and engaging in values-driven research, demonstrating a deep commitment to making a …
Ecotourism As A Tool For Conservation Of Coast Redwoods In Santa Cruz County, California, Chandana Rao
Ecotourism As A Tool For Conservation Of Coast Redwoods In Santa Cruz County, California, Chandana Rao
Master's Theses
According to the World Tourism Organization, ecotourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry, generating $300 billion in annual revenue. Ecotourism aims to control the damaging effects of conventional mass tourism and tries to overcome tourism's environmental and socio-cultural challenges. In an ideal situation, ecotourism can help conserve fragile biodiversity, build ties between parks and communities, and increase awareness of environmental issues; it also includes a profit impetus for businesses.
This research was conducted to evaluate the potential for developing ecotourism as a conservation tool in the four redwoods state parks of Santa Cruz County. The study assessed …
Natural Recovery Of Second-Growth Coast Redwood Stands In The Santa Cruz Mountains, Jeffrey M. Sinclair
Natural Recovery Of Second-Growth Coast Redwood Stands In The Santa Cruz Mountains, Jeffrey M. Sinclair
Master's Theses
The natural recovery of coast redwood forests following a logging event is not fully understood. Recent studies, in the redwood central range, have found that un-restored and unmanaged second-growth forest stands can begin to recover and exhibit characteristics of old-growth stands within 100 years or less. The goal of this study was to determine if redwood stands in their southern range are recovering naturally. A total of 160 sample plots were selected randomly within old-growth and second-growth study sites. The data collected included stand density, tree size structure, canopy cover, species diversity, and species composition. Special habitat features were analyzed …

The Water Demand Of Energy: Implications For Sustainable Energy Policy Development, Saeed Hadian, Kaveh Madani
The Water Demand Of Energy: Implications For Sustainable Energy Policy Development, Saeed Hadian, Kaveh Madani
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
With energy security, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development as three main motives, global energy policies have evolved, now asking for higher shares of renewable energies, shale oil and gas resources in the global energy supply portfolios. Yet, concerns have recently been raised about the environmental impacts of the renewable energy development, supported by many governments around the world. For example, governmental ethanol subsidies and mandates in the U. S. are aimed to increase the biofuel supply while the water footprint of this type of energy might be 70-400 times higher than the water footprint of conventional fossil energy sources. …

Changes in brain structure and cortical function are associated with many chronic pain conditions including low back pain and fibromyalgia. The magnitude of these changes correlates with the duration and/or the intensity of chronic pain. Most studies report changes in common areas involved in pain modulation, including the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and pain-related pathological changes in the PFC can be reversed with effective treatment. While the mechanisms underlying these changes are unknown, they must be dynamically regulated. Epigenetic modulation of gene expression in response to experience and environment is reversible and dynamic. Epigenetic modulation by DNA methylation is associated with …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Tackling the issue of getting healthier food options into the hands of children presents multiple barriers. For example, with almost one out of three items on the supermarket shelf coming from a genetically modified organism, with school lunches decreasing in nutrition, and with the U.S. Environmental protection agency allowing nearly 1,400 pesticides to be spread throughout our nation, 40 of which have been classified as carcinogens (Epstein, M.D., and Leibson 28-33), this task is becoming progressively more difficult. In order to slow this vicious trend, we propose the long-term goal of creating blueprints for a large community event targeting the …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
During the Fall 2013 semester, we – a group of undergraduate students in LIB322: “Wicked Problems of Sustainability” – were challenged to ameliorate the ‘wicked problem’ of school lunches served in the Grand Valley State University’s magnet charter schools. We were faced with children’s unhealthy choices and school budgetary restrictions, a road involving extensive research and seemingly continuous problem solving. We discussed the issue-at-hand with several stakeholders who are involved with children, nutrition, school lunch programs as well as local garden/farming programs. After consolidating our core values, reviewing thorough research, and integrating informative input from our stakeholders, we formulized the …
